One of the most complex decisions, believe it or not, after moving to a new area is looking for a haircut salon. Preferably one that will not break the bank, so to speak, but will do a decent haircut. With that said, I tried Express Cuts & Tans and was still determining what to expect walking in. Karen G. greeted me shortly after--she was the one who also cut my hair. Seemingly unenthused at first, but I figured it was Monday morning. Previously I had a blunt bob, but it grew out in the back. Thus, I asked for the back of my hair to match the front lengths. Long story short, Karen did well and followed what I wanted. All around, she probably cut a good inch off. Went in for a tan and the lady didn't really know anything. Took me to a room and started my time before I was even ready. I asked for 9 minutes which is usually enough for a bass tan on a quality bed. I guess I should have listened when she said 9 was not long enough. I think the bed was last serviced about a decade ago, I don't think the lights could even shine through all the dust, filth, and grim on the screens. Don't waste your time or money read more

This review is specifically for their haircut services for just getting a trim! I currently have a very busy schedule with work and graduate school clinicals. I haven't had a haircut in quite a while and really wanted to get a trim. Unfortunately, my schedule is so busy that I haven't been able to schedule an appointment with my typical salon because I am booked from 8am-5pm every weekday. I did a search on Apple Maps to find hair salons near me and this one popped up as being really close! They are open until 6pm some days, are also open on weekends, and they take walk-ins unlike many other salons. I was somewhat skeptical because most of the Yelp reviews are over a year old. I've only ever had people I know cut my hair, so I was nervous to try a brand new place where I don't know anyone. My hair is very basic and easy--all one length and straight. I figured it would be pretty hard to mess up just doing a trim on my hair, so decided to go for it! I called to schedule an appointment the day before. The Yelp business name says "Express" but their newer logo is "Xpress", the X being made out of scissors. I showed up on time and was immediately greeted and brought back to a salon chair. I had Natalie and she was really nice and friendly to talk with while I got my hair done. I told her I only wanted a trim of a few inches. She showed me the difference of what 2 vs 3 inches off would look like, and we decided to go with 3. She did my trim while my hair was dry and just sprayed water on the ends she was cutting. She finished in about 20 mins and it looked great! My hair was cut evenly and I had no complaints. It was only $22 (before tip) for a women's haircut which was so affordable. I'm not sure how they do for more complex hair appointments like drastic cuts or colors, but I was very pleased with coming here for a trim and would come back again! read more

Last year I took my kids here to get a haircut. The owner was there and she and her employees did a wonderful job. Today I took my kids, the owner was not there and her employees were annoyed and overall rude. Karen, the stylist that cut my daughters hair kept rolling her eyes and huffing and puffing. The overall haircut took 5 mins and it does not even look like she got a haircut. Children do not seem welcome here. We will not be back, definitely picking another salon next time. Went to get my hair done by a lady that usually wears Beanies, has shorter hair don't remember her name. I asked for a 1-2 fade on the sides and keep the top length. Barely had any conversation really. Had to start any conversation just to not feel awkward. She proceeded to cut, fade was absolutely terrible, uneven. Had to have my father fix it and he didn't even go to school for it and did a better job. She also thinned my hair more than it already is, now it looks like I'm balding. Concerned for anyone who goes here to get a hair cut. I recommend anywhere else! read more

I love this place. Get my hairs cut and then can get my tan on to get rid of those inevitable "white walls." They do a military fade better than most barbers! The owner (I think her name is Jeannie) is one of the most rudest people I have ever encountered. She is very snarky and she doesn't seem to mind that people do not like her. Every time I went in for the stand up tanning everything went well unless she was the one to turn it on for me. Every single time I would go in and get undressed to turn on the machine it would not work. I would have to get fully dressed again and go out and tell her it was not working. One time she cut me off after two minutes. I got dressed and was leaving and she told me in a very child like tone "I didn't do it on purpose". In other words she most certainly did it on purpose. She took an immediate dislike of me and wanted to screw with me every time I came in. I never had a problem with the other people, only her. I told a few of the other employees how much I disliked her attitude and they all agreed that she is a bitch. Too bad she owns the place because she would not be working very long with that attitude. NEVER going back. The rest of the crew working there is very nice so it is a shame that she is able to get away with her snarkiness. It is making a bad name for the entire facility. I'm just reviewing the tanning here. I needed to tan for a few weeks before heading to Mexico for a wedding at the end of October and did a lot of research around town about where I could cram in an unlimited pass for a month without spending an arm or a leg or being looped into a long term contract. This place fit the bill. For $30 I got an unlimited tan pass with no attempt to up sell or extend outside of what I specifically asked for. The staff are great- show up, tell them you want to tan and for how long...less than a minute later, you'll be in your tanning bed. They have lay down and stand up options and you can access either, just state your preference. I got super tan super quick and never had to wait. The beds are a bit dated, and it's not a luxurious spa-like experience, but it's no-frills and does the job for cheap! read more

I walked into Express Cuts & Tans today to try to get my hair cut and was told it would be 22.00. I asked if they could cut it now and a woman hesitantly said yes. I sat in her chair and noticed she was looking at a computer with a coffin on the screen. I asked her if she was watching a funeral and she said yes. I told her that made me very uncomfortable but she said she couldn't turn it off. I left because I think she was acting very strange and was afraid to let them cut my hair. I had to stop in the other day to fix a mistake my regular stylist had made, note to self, don't tease your stylist when she has clippers in her hands. I get a fade every two weeks and it was uneven and the cut wasn't either. I came in here with little expectations because I usually go to more upscale salons. I was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure if my gals name but she was pregnant and she cleaned up the shaved part of my head and trimmed the longer part. I went shorter than usual at the recommendation of the stylist and I'm super pleased. My cut still looks good almost three weeks later. This review is specific to Leesa, who has been cutting our hair for 25 years. My wife and I have always been pleased with how she does our hair, even as styles have progressed. Leesa keeps us hip with current styles and we let her have fun based on her recommendations. Now that our two kids are teenagers, she's having fun with them too. I highly recommend Leesa! The shop raised their prices by 50% during the pandemic, which I understand and realize that their prices may have been low but nothing has been done to improve the ambience inside, perhaps even worse than before. Inventory of items for sale is inadequate and sometimes the phone goes unanswered, which is a death sentence for a business like this. Silly things like the credit card reader rarely work, forcing them to enter the card by hand, which is ridiculous. The owner should step up and improve the surroundings for the guests and the staff that run the business, especially with across the board 50% price increases. 1 star for the owner/manager. read more

Like everyone else, I needed a haircut since all the hair places have been shut down due to the pandemic. I drove around Reno - Sparks on Sunday (Mother's Day) trying to find a place that could give me a basic haircut. Most of the places were closed - not a big surprise - so I planned on getting my hair cut today (Monday). Several of the places are also closed on Monday. Soooo...I tried 2 of the national chains (Great Clips & Supercuts) and neither could squeeze me in. At 4:15pm on Monday, I called Express Cuts & Tans. A friendly receptionist said that I could come in that same day at 6:30pm. I got a great haircut, & couldn't be happier! Definitely recommend this place! read more

This was my first time there..08/03/2013 @1:20pm... AND MY LAST. I normally go to another barber but they were out. I should have waited. I asked for a short flat top, -- the lady said she can do it. They took out a flat top comb to use -- I normally don't have that used as it doesn't cut close enough.-- she said this is how she does the flat top and if I wanted shorter she can do it. The lady then proceeded to buzz my hair. I took out a picture and she told me that was NOT a flat top - she didn't know what it was but wasn't a FLAT TOP.. Everyone else who has seen me said I had a flat top. I ended up with a buzz cut and I VERY MUCH did not like it. I paid the $15.. and gave $1.00 for courtesy of getting the haircut.. Found this amazing place luckily on a facebook group add and Jessie quickly got back to me so along with great communication, comes, an awesome environment, great people and chats, affordable prices so I can come back as often as I need to keep my hair looking as great as I like. A hair stylist named Toni cut my hair and she was very rude to me. She got mad at me because I asked her to trim more off on the sides and back. She got upset with me because I asked her to trim my hair a little more, saying I should have told her that in the beginning which I did. Then she ended up cutting way too much off the back, instead of tapering it like I asked her. Very impolite and unprofessional. If you go there don't have her cut your hair. I have heard other people have problems with her and I am surprised the management allows that to go on. I don't know how they expect to run an business like that. read more

She then starts to cut my sides, I ask her what she is doing and she says she needs to trim a little bit. Ok so then I tell her about my last bust and how the lady cut off all my hair when I said dont do that. I went in to get a haircut yesterday, and I was not impressed. I asked for a trim 1/2 inch off to get rid of the split ends. When the woman began cutting my hair, she didn't speak to me. The only words she spoke were " what do you want today" and I told her. When my haircut was over, she said she needed to cut more off than I wanted and the layers that i tried to grow out are back. March 27, 2014 I have been going to this salon for 10 years but the new owner of Salon and its new staff set me up with a youngish gal to do my hair and color it. Well, the hair trims have been great, not too much taken each time but the color both times have been off and unattractive. The 2nd hair color done recently turned out red, I have never ever been red before and usually am blond or very light brown. I was horrified and called three times because I also had a lot of color left on my face and ears which did not come off with their suggestions. Then I called to have it corrected they said they would but I would have to pay for it which upset me because their stylist didn't listen to me nor made me look good hair-wise which should be the goal. They also did not offer me a refund for the hair color part of my bill which in total and this includes a 15% tip came to $100.00. I called other salons and all said they do corrective colors free of charge and/or do partial refunds if the client wants to go elsewhere to correct color. So, I won't be giving Express Cuts & Tans even one star but I do like the location and they can cut hair but since the salon has new owners and new staff I would say go elsewhere for color and since they so rudely ignored my issues with my hair and treated me so badly in regards to not correcting my red hair and etc. I will never return to this salon nor ever give them new clients. read more
