Time for an update, I can't believe it was way back in 2014 when I posted my initial review! Still the one and only barber shop for me, going on 11 years now. I've never found the same personal touch anywhere I've gone in the past, and even when my go-to Mari isn't available, I've still gotten a great haircut from other staff. If you're looking for something different from the generic mass-market haircuts, somewhere you can go and feel comfortable (and leave looking better than you did when you came in), I'd strongly recommend giving BJ's a shot. read more

The lady who cut my hair was very nice, and the cut she gave me is excellent. The problem is that it's not the haircut I wanted. I showed her three different pictures of me and pointed to the length in the front, telling her that I wanted it "this long." Then while looking in the mirror, I pointed to below my jawline and specifically said "I want the length in the front to touch my chin. I want to keep it long. Maybe trim off a fraction of an inch to get rid of any dead ends, but don't cut it short." She agreed and said she would keep it long. What she ended up doing was cutting off THREE INCHES from the front. Now instead of touching my chin, the length of the front only goes to my cheekbone. I look like a guy. When my husband came home he said, "Hello, sir, have you seen my wife?" Fail. It's going to take like six months for my hair to grow back. She did a great job on the back, but the front is a total, absolute disappointment. When I look in the mirror I feel really, really sad. I don't look like me, I look like a dude... and that is not my vibe. read more

I don't think anyone should have to pay for an absolute fail haircut. The guy who went wild on my head with scissors at this place chopped a massive screwed up patch out of the back of my head with no rhyme or reason. I gave him the cool picture of myself with normal hair on the right as a reference and he gave me the total fail haircut with a giant patch removed as if he was considering to do an experiment in brain surgery after the hair patch removal. I basically have to wear a hat for three months while it grows back. I'm not sure what kind of joke that is , but I'm too old for it. I'd say running with scissors is one thing but cutting hair high on PCP is a worse idea. That's fully screwed up without any kind of rebate. read more

BEWARE !!! I made an appointment on Wednesday afternoon for 11:00 AM the following day. When I arrived 15 minutes early for my appointment the business was closed. I waited around for 30 minutes after my appointment and still no one showed up. What lousy customer service. I should send them a bill for my time but I'm sure they'd just ignore it because if they can't be bothered to show up for a schedule appointment then they certainly couldn't be bothered to pay a bill. And they had my phone number so they could have called to let me know they wouldn't be able to make the appointment. In the end I consider myself lucky because if they cannot be bothered to be there at appointed times for their clients, just think what kind of effort they'd give to give you even a somewhat decent haircut. read more

My son and I have gotten our haircuts at BJs twice over the past few months during the Covid19 pandemic and couldn't have been happier with our experience. It was easy getting reservations through a phone call to BJs. Upon checking in at the counter, we were offered beverages while we waited to be called in by our respective hair stylists. The establishment has several stations - all nicely distanced, prices are reasonable, and staff are friendly! Natalie did a fantastic job with my son's haircut and style on both visits. I have been going to her for almost 4 years now and I have never been disappointed once. She is passionate about what she does and will always make you look good. I had an appointment today and waited in the lobby for 20 minutes until I eventually left . The lady that was doing my haircut got done with her previous customer and found it acceptable to chat with this customer for 20 minutes, while I was waiting for my turn. I had told them I had a doctor's appointment that day and still was disrespectful. It is safe to say I will not be going back there. I've been here 3 times, and it's a decent place. I like how they'll offer you a beer while you wait. However, I must say STAY AWAY FROM AMANDA. She's cut my hair all 3 times, the second time she misaligned my undercut, and the third time she didn't even trim the sides evenly. I had untrimmed hair still up by my long combed back hair on top. When I pointed this out, her solution was to SHAVE A FUCKING LINE INTO THE SIDE OF MY HEAD. WTF. On top of that, she carelessly SWIPED my right sideburn in my beard with the clipper while it didn't have a guard, so now I've got a bald spot.. I can't complain too much about this place. Very randomly decided while with my boyfriend that he needed a haircut while we were in Reno. Searched On yelp and found this place right down the street from where we parked. We walked in and they told us that we could come back in about an hour and get his haircut. We came back in about an hour and still ended up waiting a half an hour in the lobby. Thankfully the hairdresser apologized quickly for the long wait. They had beer and water available and a couple different sodas while we waited. That's always a nice touch! My boyfriends hair was cut very quickly and it ended up looking decent but I think she left his hair a little bit to spiky and it seemed like a rush job. The haircut will do for the month but it's definitely not the best I've ever seen on him. Another negative was they don't style your hair after you're done getting it cut and you're on your own using the gel that they provide. read more

"If we can't make you look good... you're ugly", says the sign on the door that caught my attention. Well, I'd been called ugly before, but it'd always been for free. I figured I'd pay to get a haircut, and the chance to have someone gauge my beauty. Their shop is nicer than the outside tells. It's located in front of an empty dirt lot, so I wasn't expecting much. As soon as I walked in the door, I was in a nicer place. They have a pool table, a few chairs to wait for your turn, and magazines that are only 1 or 2 months old. They have Men's Health, Maxim, Golf and a couple of magazines about cars. That was a good sign that told me that this place was catered to young male adults. My haircut was just what I asked for, no more or less, and the stylist (Doris) was fun, not creepy and very entertaining. But if I hadn't been in the mood to have a conversation, I could have turned on a TV and watched whatever I wanted. After my hair was cut, I was offered a FREE shampooing, which I gladly took and was the cherry on top. I'd been looking for an alternative to the super-cuts kind of places, and tried out a couple of barbers that made me feel like I was too young to be there. Not anymore, this is my place to go to! A+, would recommend to males aged 18 to 40. They say they do females too, but in the 30 minutes I was there, there were 6 clients, and all of us were of the ball-bearing gender. Well anytime I can get more than four words out of the teenager about anything it is considered a conversation and if i get smile it is a bonus! I got like three sentences and a smile after his haircut with Amy today so that is a miracle. We parked across the street and walked in to a "very cool" (his words) salon and waited on the couch. He really liked the fact that they have a pool table and televisions with sports on by the stations. Amy was very good about asking him what he wanted and keeping him involved in the decision making process. She proceeded to make his hair rock (his words) and talk to him about how to style it (because this has become very important lately....which makes me think girls are involved). We asked her about product for the hair and she went over the different options. We have been trying out different places until he found one he could call his own and now we have found it. read more

My boyfriend had raved about this place to me before, but I was a little hesitant to get my haircut here, as it looked as if they mostly did men's haircuts. However, I've been here a couple of times now and think they do a pretty decent job! BJ's is not too far from UNR, with parking spots available directly in front of their shop. I highly recommend making a reservation, because a few times they have told me they accept walk-ins, but upon doing a walk-in they always tell me they are booked for the day. The inside of BJ's is very mellow; they have a couch, and a few other seats you can wait at, as well as a mini fridge stocked with complimentary water and soda options. They also have this 'style bar' for lack of a better term, which is for the men to style their hair with gels and whatnot after their haircut is finished. My most recent stylist was Mimi, and I think she did a great job with my hair! My hair was shampooed and washed before being asked how I wanted it styled. After Mimi was done cutting it, she also gave my hair a quick blowout, making it feel light and soft. She was really kind, and engaged in light conversation. I believe the prices between men's and women's haircuts are different (?). My boyfriend has said he gets charged around $20, while I get charged around $25. I suppose it's not a bad price, at least for a women's haircut, since you can either get a low quality, but cheap priced cut, or spend about $45-50 (still just for a wash and cut) at a higher end salon. Mimi cuts my hair here and she does a fantastic job and knows a variety of styles. I chose her particularly because upon moving to reno, i needed someone who knows how to cut asian hair. Trust me its different than others, especially mine. However she's skilled beyond that, but that just happens to be particularly why i continue to go to her aside from being likeable and comfortable with her. Shop is small. So, at first I was a little bit intimidated by reviews that made BJ's sound like a "men only" shop. I was delighted to find everyone is welcome. Since my hair had gotten so long and unkempt that people started to put dollar bills in my hat, the time had come for a cut. Unlike some guys, I have had a full head of hair for 67 years; no bald spots. I stopped in a few days before Christmas, walked in and was in the chair of a pretty young lady from Sparks. She gave me a terrific haircut and then gave me a free shampoo. Price? only $16. So impressed was I by BJ's that I encouraged my wife to stop in on the morning of Christmas eve. Although their sign outside says they're open "when we're here" and closed "when we're not," the nice lady who was preparing for opening invited us in to wait on the couch. Promptly at 10am, Lori was in a chair for a sweet little pixie cut that looked adorable on her. I recommend BJ's for anyone seeking a haircut or style or color or perm. read more

Being from Las Vegas, I had been going to the same barber for my whole life so I knew I had to find my go to here in the Reno area. Stephanie has been cutting my hair for about 2.5 years now here at BJ's and I would not go anywhere else. I have already recommended 8 of my friends to go to Stephanie's chair and so far there's been a 100% satisfaction rate. You should be sitting there too. Steph is down to earth and has a natural talent for cutting hair and I've been pleased with my cut and fade every single time.
