If you're new to a sound bath, I'd suggest an intro membership when offered or see if you can sign up for a single 60 minute session during one of the weekly Monday sessions. When you arrive, you are greeted by welcoming staff or maybe even the owner, Susan. Anyone would help you to get comfortable and explain what to expect just let them know you're new. Yesterday's special session was a 90 minute session and I'd say the actual time with the instruments was about 80 minutes with a very helpful and nice introduction on what we were about to experience & how it affects the body, mind and spirit. Over 20 instruments were at the two ladies who played them throughout the session, and even are utilized while walking around the room. My favorite are the sochi chimes. Reminds me of being at the beach, bringing such a peaceful feeling & memories. If you've never been, plan to experience a peaceful and almost meditative experience. Basically plan to lay on a mat, I bring mine and utilize the provided blankets, pillows & yoga blocks to cushion my back & prop my knees up with the pillows/yoga blocks for lower back comfort. Dress however you feel most comfortable, sweatpants, yoga gear, however you want to lay on the floor to rest. You may get chilly when your BP reduces, grab an extra blanket from the shelf just in case. I didn't bring an eye mask this time, which I regret not having as I find it easiest to get to another place when all light is blocked. Some fall asleep as this truly is a remarkable way to relax. Some experience nothing and others can reach almost an out of body experience, all depends on how easily you allow yourself to give in to the experience. First timers, don't expect full immersion, but go with an open mind. Highly recommend for stress relief. Thrive Yoga studio is a very inviting space with a wonderful fountain in the hallway that you can hear in the background during your sessions. They have a water dispenser for your convenience, and after some special sessions, even light refreshments are served. As you enter the studio, which is located in a lower level space, you come into a small store with the counter to check in set away from the doorway. Several studios are in the back along with restrooms and cubby areas for your shoes as no shoes in the studio are preferred, and they have space for your belongings. Everyone there is very nice and helpful. They have several type of class offerings as well as buying different types of membership depending on your needs.

They provide mats, blocks, straps, and blankets so you don't have to worry about bringing anything. The best part about this class is that it's outside in one of the most beautiful gardens I've seen. Seeing as it's located right in the middle of Rockville, it's hard to believe such a peaceful place could exist here, but once you walk through the door it's like stepping into Narnia. Instead of having music playing, we had a natural soundtrack of bird songs and water flowing from the pond. We even got a mini concert from a cardinal that was on a tree.

I know for a fact I'm stronger, leaner, and more flexible than I ever was before barre. I am a huge fan of mixing up all the formats (Empower, Define, Align, Classic, and Reform) and love that I can pick the format fits my mood or body's needs that day. If you haven't done any kind of group fitness before - I highly recommend trying your first class (it's free)! You'll find the instructors incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, and the music is there to guide you to the beat. I can get overstimulated easily, and these classes have never made me feel that way. I'll be honest that the price is what initially made me hesitate before choosing to start a membership a few years ago, but I'm so glad I chose to put my physical health first. (PS - the unlimited package shakes out to about $13 per class if you attend 15 classes per month). Don't know where I'd be if PB wasn't part of my daily routine!

In other group fitness classes that I have taken, the instructors stay at the front of the room and basically complete the same workout as the participants. At Pure Barre, instructors take classes (led by other instructors) because when they are teaching and demonstrating, they aren't getting the intense workout that comes with taking a class. In this review, I also would like to praise the instructors' willingness to work with people with limitations like me. (I have a broken arm that did not heal well). They have great suggestions for modifying exercises. I would encourage anyone who needs a few modifications to give Pure Barre a try. The instructors will have suggestions for you, but they are equally as open to letting you figure out what you need on your own. That kind of flexibility, along with 4 different class formats, keeps me coming back!

(But also, support local businesses and try and buy classes too if you're able!) I took two classes this week - one with Kathy and one with Brenda. Both instructors were so welcoming and kind. Both classes were challenging (but accessible!). I enjoyed both classes a lot - Kathy's sculpt yoga class had me hobbling the next day, and Brenda's class had me challenging myself to try poses I hadn't before. She also had a message at the beginning and end of class about making sure to focus on you're "want to be" list (strong, brave, kind, loving, etc) versus your "to do" list. I love this. In both classes, it seems as though there's great community - a lot of the women seemed to know each other and were excited to take classes together. I hope that if I were in the area, I could be a part of this uplifting environment. The studio itself is clean, has great AC, and has lots of windows to look at trees while you're trying not to fall over in your own tree pose.
