I had a deeply concerning experience with the security practices at this storage facility…read more Recently the facility experienced a burglary and I was contacted by local police because the facility initially suggested that my access code may have been used to enter the property. After reviewing their own logs more closely, the facility later confirmed that my code was not used and that another code had actually opened the gate. What is troubling is what happened next. Even after determining which access code was used during the burglary, the facility has continued to leave that code active more than 20 days after the incident. No remediation has been taken to disable or reset the compromised credential. From a basic security standpoint this makes very little sense. When a breach occurs and a specific credential is involved, standard practice would be to immediately disable or rotate that access method. Leaving it active creates an obvious ongoing vulnerability for every tenant storing property there. The facility advertises itself as secure, but in my experience the response to a known breach raises serious concerns about how access control and tenant security are actually handled. If you are storing valuables here, I strongly recommend asking management how they handle compromised gate codes after a security incident.

They have cameras so I know my items in the unit are safe and we feel safe when we are in and out of the unit. My biggest problem is how they raise costs. Twice in 18 months. Last year (2023) my unit increased and I tried to call to negotiate but could not get through and so I emailed the manager directly without a response. That's problem number one with cost increases. When I tried to explain this, the manager (Curtis) got very defensive and prattled on without allowing me to provide him with what I'm about to state in this review. Not the best customer service. On November 30, 2023 I received notice that the rent on my 5x10 unit was being raised to $150 per month. So I quickly booked the same size unit over at Extra Space in Salisbury for $65 per month and moved out on December 2nd. Issues that I have - the rent increase notice comes on November 30, leaving no time to move out before incurring another month's rent. There are no refunds. The notices for increase in both years (2022 and 2023) come during a time of year when people would be busy with the holidays and at a time of year where it could potentially be too cold to move. That stopped me last year from moving but that wasn't going to happen again this year. I didn't bother calling or emailing this year based on my experience from the previous year. I simply moved to a cleaner, newer and less expensive unit on December 2 (first Saturday after receiving rent increase notice in the mail). I still have to pay rent for December of course since I was still in the unit on December 1, but they leave you no option since the rent increase comes via post on November 30. A mid month notice would help so any move out could happen before rent is due for the next month. Easy since they have my email and cell phone but they choose to force you into renting for another month. Why didn't I just stay for December since I paid? Because I knew the weather this weekend is in the 40s and I don't know what the weather will look like if I waited to move in late December. Also take note that late December is Xmas and New Years. Seems to be a pretty good (sarcasm) tactic on the part of Cube Smart to make it very difficult to move out. Note that I had 2 increases in only 1.5 years. Also note that it took me less than 1 hour to pick up a van for $19 and move everything to another company/unit. Anyone with a smaller unit like mine should be aware of how easy it is to move to a new location and not bow to these tactics of late notice during the cold and busy months.
