I told them I got their address from yelp, and they all laughed, they said a lot of their new clients were coming from yelp. They were friendly and helpful, and I found a great pair of glasses. I found Eye Appeal off of Yelp and I'm very glad for it. I used to go to a place right near my apartment (Village Eyecare on Taylor St.) until they made three mistakes and were therefore forever banned from my patronage. If only I could get them to stop sending me their "check-up reminder" postcards...but that would probably require me to initiate some sort of contact with them, which simply isn't going to happen. Sorry, Village Eyecare, but it's over. Just accept it. You brought this on yourself. I digress... Anyway, I see Dr. Asano at Eye Appeal and she's just great. Cheerful, friendly, competent. Unlike many health care professionals that I've encountered, she doesn't seem to overtly hate her life, her job, or me. I have always (always=the two times that I've been there) been able to get an appointment time that is convenient for me. One demerit point for the lack of frame selection. They have plenty of frames, but they are all exactly the same: rec-freaking-tangular. I know that that's the current style, but my God... My appointment was at 4 pm and I was in the doctors chair at 4 pm, I knew this was going to be good, the doctor is on time!!!! And what a hoot, he was thorough, informative and quite humorous. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Dr. Ortiz and his staff spent the entire time trying to upsell me in every way - from daily contacts to special coatings for my glasses. When I tried to get a copy of my records to order elsewhere, they put me on hold for a while then told me some lie about not being allowed to. They didn't give in until 3 calls later after I did some research online. Not sure why they have so many good reviews when it is clear that their only motivation is money. My guess is that they either are paying for for reviews or their clientele is under-informed about healthcare and the compensation around it... read more

Avoid at all costs just as some of the patients have written. I've been a patient/customer for 8 years and I will never be visiting again as the service has gone downhill in the past 2-3 years. I am finally writing my first review on Yelp because what EyeAppeal has just now done is downright negligent if not despicable. They are absolutely amazing when it comes to service when it involves purchasing eyeglasses/contacts with EyeAppeal. When you need prescriptions, you will be dealing with a difficult company. I got my eye exam done about a year ago and I asked for my eye prescription then, which they reluctantly gave to me. I asked for my prescription again approximately one year later (it expires in two years) to be emailed to me as the eyeglass selection is somewhat limited and I couldn't find the original prescription. I was told that it would take 2-3 hours for them to email it to me because the individual was busy. I thought it odd because it shouldn't be difficult to just send an emailed pdf of my prescription. I finally received my pdf prescription and just recently I bought a new pair of eyeglasses in Asia while on vacation and my eye prescription was completely incorrect. At first I thought it was staff at the Asian eye exam clinic that was incompetent at making the glasses but then they kept insisting that my prescription was wrong. I argued that I was always the same eye strength but they said that the prescription incorrectly stated my astigmatism as positive when it should have been negative. They even had me sit down and re-evaluated my eyes and the eye test confirmed what they were staying. I had to pay twice for the incompetency of EyeAppeal filling out my prescription wrong. But it gets better. You remember that original prescription that I had filled out by EyeAppeal? They correctly had my prescription written there. Either they have to type in a new form when they create a prescription or even worse, they blatantly edited out my prescription form to give me an incorrect prescription in order for me to get me wrong eyeglasses from outside eyecare. If it is the latter, that is utterly despicable. I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

Great overall experience. Unfortunately, I got a bit lost trying to locate the shop (which for some reason I thought had a ground floor storefront) and was a bit late. The staff at Eye Appeal was able to work their schedules and fit me in anyways. Saved me the trouble of making a second trip. I had an appointment with Dr. Asano. She was fantastic although she probably would have been even better if I had arrived on time. As it was she was polite and nice, but mostly business. She offered to dilate my eyes at the end of the day so I could go back to work as well. Prices are pretty reasonable. Staff is nice. Selection of frames is outstanding for a small shop. I came to Eye Appeal for the first time this weekend because I needed a regular checkup. My husband had just been here a couple weeks ago, and he raved about it, so I thought I'd give it a shot. This place is awesome. It absolutely lives up to all these 5-star reviews. Everyone was so friendly and patient and helpful. The office was colorful and bright, too, and they have a great selection of eyeglasses. It's in a super convenient location in the Loop, and they're open on Saturdays, too, which is always helpful when you need to get your eyes dilated--and therefore, can't see anything for the next 3 hours. :) I'll definitely be back. First of all, I just want to say that I'm always a little suspicious when a restaurant/doctor/anything gets reviews that seem a little TOO good...as in, it always seems like maybe the only people reviewing the place are actually their own employees? But that being said, after going to Eye Appeal, I seriously could not agree any more with all of these glowing reviews. My boyfriend and I have both been meaning to get our eyes checked for weeks--neither of us have ever had glasses or been to the eye doctor before--so we finally made an appointment. I was a little worried about the whole thing, considering I didn't really know what to expect, but it was a completely painless process. They got us both in within the next few days, and they really worked with our schedules to make sure the timing was convenient. Everything at the appointment went great--Dr. Asano was incredibly friendly and made the process really easy. She explained everything well and answered all of my questions without seeming rushed or inconvenienced (as busy doctors sometimes seem to). After we both got the good news (we needed glasses...)we went out to the waiting room and tried on pretty much every single pair. They have a great selection--neither of us had any idea what we wanted, and we both ended up really happy with what we found. Steve was a really great help as well. He answered all our questions and helped us find pairs that we liked, and he was really friendly and patient with us while we made our decisions. Even more so, he was great about explaining all of our options (extras, payment, etc.) and he didn't try to push us into buying anything we didn't need. On top of all of that, the office is cheerful, clean and comfortable, and it's in a really convenient location (in the loop, right by the el). Wow! I'm a relatively new customer at Eye Appeal Optical -- just had my first eye exam a few months ago and I'm on a trial pair of contacts right now. Well, my eye became scratched/irritated last week and it wasn't healing. So I called Eye Appeal today first thing in the morning and spoke to Dr. Ortiz. He got me on his schedule as soon as he possibly could. When I arrived, it was clear that Dr. Ortiz was super busy. BUT -- he still took me at 10:30am on the dot. Right on time. And he didn't rush through the appointment. He was extremely thorough and took time to explain everything very clearly, while also providing me with all the products necessary to remedy the problem -- going so far as to recommend a better regimen to avoid this type of thing in the future. I was referred by a friend, and sold by reading the Yelp reviews. Now I feel it's time to repay the favor! I went to Eye Appeal on a Friday afternoon during my lunch break. When I walked in, the place was bright and friendly, they took my information right away, and I was able to peruse the glasses selection for a while. I had to wait about 10 minutes past the time of my appointment, but both the receptionist and Dr. Ortiz were very apologetic, explaining that one of the staff members was out of the office that day, and things were a little hectic. Noting that this was what I assumed to be the "lunchtime rush" it didn't seem hectic at all, but I appreciated the apology. Dr. Ortiz was great, and explained everything he was checking along the way. He likes to do all of his own tests (unlike places I've been in the past where very unfriendly technicians do most of the work) and he really seems to love his job. Once it came to picking my lenses and frames, the tech was extremely helpful, and not pushy at all. One thing I can't stand is feeling tricked into an upsell, and that certainly did not happen here. They pointed out the price ranges for the various frames up front, explained which add-ons they suggested (but didn't push!), and told me which additional options weren't necessary. They also explained everything my insurance would cover as well as costs and discounts. Additionally, I overheard the tech working with another customer who didn't have vision insurance, and he patiently explained all her options with her. Finally, as an added perk, they happily adjusted my old glasses (that I didn't get from them) free of charge. Always a nice bonus! read more

My wife and I just went to see Big Papi Ortiz to get our eyes checked. His office is very clean and modern and he made me feel comfortable while checking out my eyes. I feel like I'm cheating taking all of those vision tests, but he helped me out and got me the glasses I needed. The office has a bunch of options to choose from many designers. Papi made us feel really relaxed and was great, even when he was dilating my pupils. That sure was a strange trip, wide eyed. read more

I went to Eye Appeal because of the reviews on Yelp and I was not disappointed. Dr. Assano is wonderful. She takes so much time and care to explain the services and to explain the procedures. She also informed me that I am nearsighted and I have an astigmatism in my left eye. Who knew? All the other doctors I have ever gone to never took the time to communicate any of that information to me. Plus she is quick and I was in and out of there in 45 minutes. I also complained of dry eyes and she gave me a free sample of a rather expensive bottle of eye drops. Such a nice experience and for only 80 bucks. My status as a student leaves me without insurance so I had to pay out of pocket but Dr. Assano, the visit, the care, and the facilities was well worth it. read more

I first went to Eye Appeal...well, because they accepted my insurance. But I would totally go there again because all the staff was super nice and helpful and helped me pick glasses out.They then warned me that it was going to be kind of hard to judge where the ground was and say I should try not to fall off the curb. I DID fall off the curb the next day but when I took them back to replace the nose guard, the lone casualty of the fall, the eye glass guy was very sweet about it. I wanted to go back to get glasses here this year but I could only go on the day during the week that they close at 1pm so I had to go elsewhere. When I get glasses in the future I will try to go here first for sure. read more

I had Lasik at TLC in June. They sent me to Eye Appeal to get my follow ups. I had to get a follow up the day after, the week after, and the month after. I had great experiences each time with Dr. Asano. I'm definitely going to return for my yearly check-ups. What I like the best is that Dr. Asano would tell me information that none of my past optometrists ever bothered to tell. She was quick but I never felt rushed. Full disclosure: Dr. Asano is a good friend of mine. It was a complete coincidence that TLC sent me there because it was the closest one to my home. I chose this eye optical based off of Yelp reviews, and boy, was I in so impressed. Yelp lead me in the right path for sure! I had to knock one star because their eye glasses selection is not that good, but for contacts and examination...this is the place to go. By far, a nice office, smart/funny/knowledgable staff...and Dr. Ortiz himself is so great. He has a gentle bedside (eye?!) manner and really is thorough in his examination. I was able to leave with a pair of my eye contact samples to test to be sure my eyes would respond to them...in all, a really nice place that works wtih my insurance company. I've lived in Chicago for 4 years now and still have not chosen and optometrist. Well, that is until now.... Based on the rave reviews from Yelp, i made my first appointment with Dr. Brian Ortiz. My appointment was on a Saturday morning - the entire staff that was in that Saturday was very helpful and happy to make sure my needs were met. I have a very standard vision insurance. With the insurance I have, I was quite pleased with the cost of everything. The selection of frames they offer is very updated and trendy, not to mention very diverse. I ordered some frames that needed to be special ordered from the manufacturer and they still had the lenses set and ready for pick up within a week. I feel very safe saying that I've now got an optometrist in Chicago. read more

After being WELL overdue for an eye doctor appointment after moving to Chicago just over two years ago, I finally broke down and made an effort to track a new one down. Must consternation on Yelp over where to go began and took a few weeks to resolve... Based on other reviews, I landed on Eye Appeal and was happy with the visit yesterday. I had a 9 a.m. appointment and, figuring arriving 10 minutes early as a new patient would be a good idea, ended up waiting in the hallway for 10 minutes before they opened. A little annoying, but my fault! Upon opening, I was quickly led in, processed and in the exam room in no time. Measurements, etc. all done efficiently and Dr. Assano offered up more information and understanding than I remember from previous eye doctors. There was a slight initial upsell on glasses at the beginning but nothing difficult to shake off. All-in-all, great little practice for a bit of a hole-in-the-wall find! read more

I've never written a Yelp review, but in this case I feel the need to contribute. I found Eye Appeal on Yelp after some bad experiences with other O.D.s. I'm very happy with my new find. It was convenient to schedule and re/schedule without too much wait time. It's in a very convenient location and the office is not packed. Everyone - even the Doctor is cool. Actually it took some time for me to believe they were doctors bc they were so cool. The most satisfying part of my experience was the attention they gave me. She prescribed a new contact lens, it didn't work. I came back and got a second Rx, it didn't work. So I came back a 3rd time...all the while feeling bad for wasting their time, but when I apologized they looked at me like *I* was crazy for thinking it should be a different way. Then when I came back 6 mo later to pick up my refill lenses the Doctor actually recognized me and said hi on the street outside...how cool?! So I will be going back and I will recommend Eye Appeal to anyone looking for an O.D. in the city. Most of all Thank You Yelp!! read more

I have been going to Eye Appeal for fifteen years, even before Dr. Ortiz assumed the practice after my previous OD passed on. It was a great place fifteen years ago, especially the front office staff then, and when Dr. Ortiz took over, I was very impressed with him. And how can you not remember the location? 111 N. Wabash, Ste. 1111. I agree with what other have said: always on time, always professional. Let me add something to show how special Dr. Ortiz is. I went in recently because I broke my glasses. I have a very high prescription, astigmatism, and progressive lenses. Since I had not had an exam in awhile, we scheduled that before replacing the glasses. When I got the glasses, I couldn't adjust to them. So I made another appointment, during which Dr. Ortiz did another full exam and discovered I had a corneal infection. So he gave me drops to treat that and scheduled another exam after my eyes had a chance to heal. Then there was the third exam, with dilation, and a new prescription which they filled in the frames I had bought for the first prescription. I got that and all is fine. The impressive thing here is that Dr. Ortiz gave me TWO additional exams and remade the glasses for the new prescription AT NO ADDITIONAL COST to me. Clearly he cares about a positive outcome for his patients even at his own expense. I have had only one interaction with Dr. Asano and she was very professional and helpful too. Wish the frame selection was greater and wish that in the 21st century, it didn't take seven to ten business days to get glasses made, but I dare the online places to beat that with my prescription and 1.74 index lenses. read more

The eye doctor was very knowledgeable and gave me the wrong prescription. In addition the staff there appear to be fallacious in their greetings! For the last year, I have been struggling with some sort of mystery problem with my eyes. It all started last April, when my contact lens Rx expired, and it was discovered by a different optometrist that there was something irritating my eyes. Since then, I've been to 5 different optometrists and ophthamologists, none of whom could tell me why I seemed to be becoming increasingly less tolerant of my contacts, and all of whom acted like it was my fault for over wearing them or not cleaning them enough, even though that was not the case. After a year of being lectured for things I was not doing by doctors who refused to listen to me or take the time to try to find out what was wrong, I have found Eye Appeal. Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Asano are two of the best listeners I have ever met, and it seems as though it didn't even occur to them to lecture me. At the first visit, Dr. Ortiz listened carefully to my tale of woe, updated my prescription, and gave me samples of an eye drop that he thought would help (apparently, the most common eye drop for this type of problem, even though NONE of the other doctors had even suggested it). Within a week, my eyes are all better, and we now know that I am allergic to silicone- duh. They are ordering an older model of contacts for me that are not made out of silicone, which is something that none of the other doctors would consider because they don't get the kick-backs from less mainstream companies. I HIGHLY recommend Eye Appeal to EVERYONE. If you don't have insurance, they are very conscious of keeping your costs as low as possible and work hard to find discounts and samples. The office staff are some of the most personable people I have ever met, and everyone I have come into contact with has been incredibly friendly and helpful. First, let me say I've had a lot of eye docs in my time. I went relatively blind (well, nearsighted) at the ripe old age of 9, so I have roughly 20 years of experience evaluating these people. Usually, they are pretty nice. I mean, they do the exams, rarely yell at you while they've got your chin up in that contraption (and yes, I have had someone yell at me, for not blinking enough. Real prince, that guy.) You get your goods and you move on, until it's time for another exam. Generally, I've found them to be interchangeable in a way, say, OB/GYNs are not. Well, until now, anyway. Dr. Asano's chairside manner has inspired devotion. 1. She explains everything as she goes along. There is no reason I should have been employing vision correction half my life and not known some of the things she exlpained. No, I'm not telling you, go visit her. 2. She is perfectly up front with the bottom line--no bait and switch trying to get you to buy the priciest thing on the market. That's all, really. It's a great staff, the prices are reasonable, the location was great for me and my loop-area gig. Highly recommend! read more

I will say Dr. Ortiz himself is a good eye doctor. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience at Eye Appeal was not good. Service was terrible, I waited 30+ minutes before anyone would help me pick out frames. Several people were helped ahead of me - even though they arrived after I did. I am very underwhelmed with the knowledge of the staff relative to other Opticians I have been to. As someone who has a very strong prescription, picking the right frame and lens shape is critical to getting a finished product that looks good. Sadly, the staff seemed much more interested in trying to upsell me than in helping me find the right frame. The lenses I received from Eye Appeal are incredibly thick and look terrible relative to lenses I have gotten elsewhere - despite the fact that Eye Appeal actually reduced the strength of my prescription. If you are looking for more than a good eye doctor and are looking for knowledgable staff that can help provide you a good looking pair of glasses - I would strongly recommend going elsewhere. read more

I meant to write a review long ago, but I figure better late than never, right? I've had shockingly poor eyesight my entire life (got contacts when I was 8), so have spent a good deal of time in eye dr.'s offices. But I didn't find out about Eye Appeal and Dr. Ortiz until last year, when the optometrist who worked with my ophthalmologist left and I needed somewhere to get glasses. I really wish I'd known about him years ago - it would have saved me so much frustration and aggravation, not to mention money! Dr. Ortiz is truly wonderful. He is patient, good-humored and, perhaps most importantly, (and something I'd never experienced from any eye dr.) he explains everything thoroughly. Vision & the inner workings of the eye are extremely complex and something I've never fully understood. Dr. Ortiz told me things about my vision that I'd never known, and spent a great deal of time discussing the best options for me with regard to new contact lenses, as well as new glasses. I also discovered that there was no reason for me to continue to see both an ophthalmologist and an optometrist unless a problem arises (like retinas begin to detach). The difference in power between my left and right lens in the monotype vision lenses was too severe for me to see well, so Dr. Ortiz sent them back for 're-tooling.' I also had to return a couple more times so that he could re-fit them (did you know that contacts change the shape of your eyes and this needs to be taken into account after you've worn new ones for a few days?). His goal is not to assembly-line his patients, but rather to provide them with the best vision possible. I adore Dr. Ortiz, but I would be remiss if I did not mention the wonderful staff. The guys who worked to find me the best glasses in my price range, make sure they fit properly, and figure out what my insurance would pay for, as well as the girls at the front desk, who seem to love their jobs and are always laughing and schmoozing with customers - I've never encountered such a friendly staff in a Dr.'s office! They are a welcoming, very competent bunch of people, and as far as I'm concerned I've found my eye dr. for life! read more

I have had two appointments here to get a prescription for glasses and a eye dialysis (sp?) exam. Nothing to complain about. Dr. Ortiz and the staff were friendly despite me coming in late during both appointments (woops). Got a good deal on everything with my insurance, and not sure if I'll be getting my glasses here. I saw Dr. Ganz for a contact lens exam (10/5/2015). The most amazing exam (as much as an eye exam can be amazing) ever! First, the office does not use the air puffer machine to test eye pressure. It was some other high tech machine that is much more pleasant. Second, she listened to my eye issues and explained that allergy eye drops must be administered before you put in your contacts. Who knew! They were conveniently located and very reasonable. The front desk was also very helpful in emailing me my eyeglass script. read more

First let me say that I've never had glasses before. Last time I had to go to an eye Dr. was when I was 16 before I could get my license. This was a great experience. I loved Dr. Asano, she explained everything and was just great. I was expecting everything to cost more than it did. I will recommend them to anyone who needs to get their eye's checked. read more
