Attended the Emancipator 1st of 2 nights performance. To begin with, upon approaching security for…read moreentry- they were very professional & did well in assisting with my question about paying for parking street side & escorting me to the elevator. Julianna was waiting inside of the elevator to escort me to my seat (ADA), of which they had reserved a seat by putting a sign on the seat with my name on it! She did well of answering my questions re: the bar location & of food served. While I was at the bar & waiting for my food, she approached me once again to let me know that she had to move my seat for a particular reason & then led me to the new spot, which was next to the VIP section. I was so amazed when she said she would even go retrieve my food order for me! The Get Down doesn't have a lot to choose from for food: hot dogs (PDX & of your own toppings) or mini- pizzas. I chose the PDX hot dog & thoroughly enjoyed it! I even splurged & treated myself to their specialty alcohol beverage containing rum known as a "Purple Rain"; all of their other specialty beverages contain vodka. The "Purple Rain" was delicious & definitely recommended!! One thing that I like about this venue is the smaller size: the max capacity is 450. Therefore the dance floor doesn't get as crowded. The ADA seating also allows for good view of the stage. Another situation appreciated at The Get Down is ample signage for locating the restrooms. I was excited to see Emancipator (local DJ Doug Appling & electronic violinist Ilya Goldberg) perform: after 2 other DJs opened, the main performance began. It was indeed enjoyable!! I will check back online for additional performances in the future, as this is a very enjoyable venue to attend & a shout-out to Julianna- she definitely made me feel like a VIP before & after the performance, of which she once again located me & escorted me out!

The staff was always ready to help us, and resolved any hiccups with ease. They were organized and attentive, I could tell they wanted the evening to run smoothly. I was really impressed with how seamlessly the space transformed from a music venue, to a beautiful intimate wedding venue. All of our friends and family kept talking about the energy of the room, the layout, and how unique the experience felt next to traditional venues. It truly is the epitome of the Portland charm. I'm so grateful to the Get Down and their team for creating a night our family will never forget.

Drinks were tailored for the event, pricey but expected and pizza offered by the slice. Service and staffing existed and moved like a well oil machine. Was allowed to take a peek at the loft area, but it was $20 and hardly seemed like an improvement, especially with how close to stage we managed to get. Ambience wise it felt very rustic, you could feel the floor bend as everyone jumped around, had a smell but I think it was mostly the people and not the building so expect it regardless. Overall great, and this rating will reflect the time of the Schoochie Boochie concert and may change as I attend more events and get an experienced picture.

Seeing your child walk onto a real stage, under real lights, with a full band and an audience cheering them on hits you right in the heart. This was not just kids playing songs. It was confidence. Growth. Courage. You could see how much work they put in and how supported they felt by their instructors and by each other. Watching them perform, handle the crowd, recover from little mistakes, and finish strong was incredibly moving as a parent. School of Rock is a truly great program. It teaches music, but more than that it teaches teamwork, discipline, and how to show up when it matters. You can tell these kids are learning life skills along with guitar riffs and drum fills. Hawthorne Theatre was the perfect venue for this experience. It feels real and authentic, not polished or sterile. Being close to the stage made everything feel personal and immersive. The sound was solid, the flow of the event was smooth, and the whole space felt welcoming to families while still giving the kids a true concert experience. There is something powerful about watching your child perform in a real venue and realizing how much they have grown. We left feeling proud, emotional, and grateful for programs like this that give kids a place to shine. Highly recommend School of Rock and Hawthorne Theatre. This was more than a concert. It was a memory we will carry for a long time.

The older gentleman at the door was welcoming and kind, and very apologetic that the door fee was cash only (tip - bring cash or you'll have to walk a couple blocks to the plaid pantry for atm access). The food we ordered was good (burgers and fries), the bartender seemed a little annoyed or bothered in general, maybe he was having an off night, so he wasn't the friendliest person but he poured cold beer and put our orders in correctly so there's that. Come for the live music and divey aesthetic, and you'll leave feeling quite satisfied! Oh, and parking was a little meh considering the area.

A warm, funky, old school-not-faking it atmosphere with vintage wooden booths and tables. Cheap drinks. Check, check and check. As for grub, the BLT and burgers are solid pub fare, though the nachos are a hard pass. I don't come here for the food though, but for the thoroughly competent bartenders who work the always-crowded, narrow main room with grace and wit; the reliably excellent entertainment (which often includes a loyal band of dancing hippies, resplendent in their tie dyes, grooving to the tunes); and the strong drinks from the full bar. Add in a friendly neighborhood vibe that makes it seem like everyone's welcome, and you've got a true Portland institution. Support local music! Pro tip: if the main room gets too loud for you - as it often does - there's a smaller back area with a couple of tables, a pool table, pinball machines and a tv screen live-streaming whatever band is on stage at the moment. It's a good spot to eat your food or have an actual conversation when the volume is too much in the other room. Also; the bathroom sucks.
