I looked up the closest VSP Doctors to my work and found two. I decieded on Eye Carumba based on the postive Yelp reviews. I called to make an appt and spoke to Mike. He was very detailed in explaining my benefits and securing my appt. The exam was done by Dr. Yeh. I liked his approach. Because He Saw The Salad Dressing"... and "Eye Carumba" I had so much fun in this eye exam, despite finding out that my blindness over the years has almost doubly increased. Dr. Valdez is so sweet: she's super talkative and friendly, and SO nice! She prescribed some special contacts for me and wanted me to wear them for a week before she gave me a presription, so I came back a week later for a follow up exam. I loved that she *listened* to what I had to say, not just try to get me in and out of there. Also, they had a variety of frames for a range of prices, so you'll definitely find stylish frames for any price. Random fun moment: When I was leaving, they asked me how I heard about them. Walking into this place you automatically notice that the shop is shaped like an eye. Rounded waiting room connects to crescent shaped showroom and connects with the rest of the office. Very sharp, shagged white carpet on the tables and over all a nice styling Dr. office. Dr. Valdez is great! Easy to talk to and actually is interested in her patients lives. Super nice! read more

My eyes are still a bit dilated, but I'm going to type a review anyhow-- Dr. Yeh was fabulous. He was very personable and concise- just the way you (or specifically I) like an appointment to be. He went over my insurance with me a bit, because I always get a little confused with the specifics, and I'm glad I did because I decided that it would be in my best interest to put my coverage towards new frames/glasses. Rod assisted me and was tops. He helped me find the right shape and size (I had originally selected some frames that were too small for my face) and then went over all the different types of lenses that were an option. He really was great. Everyone in the office was great, the selection of frames was good (there were some not-so-expensive choices) and I can't wait to get my new specs!!! read more

I have had a wonderful experience each time I visit Eye Carumba; Dr. Torres is so personable and also explains things very thoroughly which I really appreciate. I have had prescription lenses for about 10 years now but never wore them because they caused headaches; well Dr. Torres got to the bottom of it and now I wear my glasses all the time and can actually see clearly! Another service I like about Eye Carumba is the appointment text reminders, I usually have my appointments all plugged into my calendar but the extra reminder is very helpful. The staff is also friendly and a lot of time is taken when choosing frames, I have never felt rushed, also I don't think I've ever waited for an appointment - I am seen AT my appointment time which as we all know is rare in health care, I also work in a doctors office and follow the same practice of not double booking appointments riding patients of long waits and extended magazine flipping. OH - And Dr. Torres DOES NOT torture his patients with the dreaded "Air puff test" or pressure test, he tests for the same conditions but using a different method. I just picked up my new sunglasses! Whoo-hoo! The staff was awesome and Dr. Valdez answered all my questions and was super helpful. Afterwards, I was handed a prescription (which in my experience is usually difficult to get) for both glasses and contact lenses. Then I met with another fellow who helped me pick frames and sat me down and explained my vision coverage to me and how to get the most out of it. WOW! I was impressed with that. I deducted a star because my sunglasses took about a month to come in. Fortunately, I wasn't in a rush for them but it was just frustrating to have to wait so long. Broke the nosepiece to my glasses, went to eye carumba to get a replacement. I thought it was a simple swap and go. However, Dr. Valdez came to inspect my nose to see if the old piece was causing an allergic reaction. WOW, I was amazed by the attention to the small details. Eye carumba told me I had six months to return my glasses after I had to come back to fix the first pair they made because initially when I put them on they were totally off never experienced this but the associate insisted I take them home and try them for two weeks which I totally regret doing now. After 2 weeks of trying them on I'm not adjusting to them and still feels totally off so I come back to have them adjust which they agree to do at no cost because they agreed something was not right and creating a fun house effect for me. Then 3 weeks go by and my glasses are supposedly ready I come back and try them on and are still very uncomfortable and cannot see properly out of them same as the first time. They basically said because there was already a correction made there was no option for me to return now or something to that effect and that I had major changes to my prescription which is completely false. Very disappointed with the waste of time and money involved here and the associates are not only unhelpful but intentionally try to mislead you. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Yeh as my regular optometrist for several years now and he is fabulous! As I mature (read: get older), I've had floaters, flashes of light and other various issues for which I've needed an emergency appointment. Last year, I saw Dr. Tracewell and she was just as amazing as Dr. Yeh in taking her time with me and figuring out what was wrong. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Avery who, again, was just as phenomenal as Drs. Yeh and Tracewell. I am over the moon happy with everyone I've met at Eye Carumba including Kellie at the front desk and the opticians who have helped me select frames over the last 10 years or so. Everyone at Eye Carumba is very friendly and professional. I see Dr. Yeh who is very thorough. I have had the same optometrist since I was born (actually he is an opthamologist) and now that I live in the city I decided it was time to get an optometrist here. I have never been told a lot of the details of my eye problems because I'm sure my optometrist never thought of telling me once I was an adult(because as a child I didn't understand much of it) Dr. Yeh explains everything to me...from the intricacies of how the eye works to what will work best for my eyes. THE LAB THEY USE IS INCOMPETENT Short version: nearly 3 month after I paid for the glasses, two mistakes by the lab and one wrong prescription later, I still do not have the glasses. 1. Ordered and paid for new glasses on December 27. Was promised the glasses will be ready in two weeks. 2. Took one month instead of two weeks as (according to Eye Carumba) the glasses had to be remade to fix a mistake made by the manufacturing lab 3. After delivery the prescription turned out to be wrong so the glasses had to be sent back to the lab with a new prescription. Was promised the glasses will be ready in two weeks 4. Nearly one month later, as of March 6, still no glasses, as guess what, (according to Eye Carumba) there is yet another mistake made by the manufacturing lab. I have been wearing glasses for 30 years and never experienced such level of incompetence. Asked for a refund. read more

After not-so-great experiences with a few Bay Area optometrists who shall remain un-named, I made an appointment at Eye Carumba. I left a dopey, rambling message during their lunch break and forgot to leave my phone number... one of the very nice people who works there took my number off the caller ID and called me back anyway! Wow! I was so impressed. I was even more impressed after meeting Dr. Torres. Dr. Torres is terrific! He's personable and warm, and spends time talking with you about your vision. (He's also very nice-looking and tidy.) He wasn't fazed when I told him that I was wearing one brand of contact lens in one eye and another, older lens in my other eye-- he doesn't scold and he's not judgmental. He ordered a pair of diagnostic lenses for me and the staff called me the very next day to say they were in. Dr. Torres also didn't charge me for my contact lens fitting until AFTER we were sure the lenses actually fit (unlike my previous eye doctor, who charged me for a contact lens fitting after asking me "how do they feel?" and my replying, "Um, they're okay...") ...and how can anyone not love the name "Eye Carumba"? It shows that the doctors have a sense of humor, and that going to this eye doctor appointment is going to be a little more fun than, say, getting a pap smear. I LOVE Eye Carumba and Dr. Torres! Mike and his crew HOOKED ME UP yesterday. I've been sad & squinting since loosing some very expensive Chanel sunglasses and I had to get an interim pair that I ended up getting really attached to. I was browsing the glasses and I could not bring myself to drop another 300+ on frames, and I found myself picking the styles like the "interim" glasses. Turns out they had some stock lenses in house that fit my near-sight and Jcrew Selma Optique's perfectly. They were able to fit me in for a quick refraction-only exam, first time ever spending less than $200 on glasses and exam. Dr. was sweet and chatty. And, I think they spread good glasses karma; I found my Chanel's on ebay as soon as I got home and will be back to get those hooked up soon! read more

I had Dr. Yeh for an eye exam and someone (Paul?) helped me pick out glasses frames. Dr. Yeh is friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. I was confident he knew what he was doing, especially with my crazy high prescription (-14! Beat that!). He figured out my prescription in one visit - my last optometrist took 3 visits. He was kind enough to walk me out to the front and snag someone to help me pick frames. Paul (I think it was Paul? An Asian guy) showed me how their displays worked with the key and stuff and asked me what styles I liked. In the time it took me to change into my contacts so I can see myself in these new frames (5 minutes?), he picked out 4-6 pairs of frames for me, all the while remembering what I said about my tiny wide head and glasses - most don't fit. All except one of Paul's frames fit my wide head. BLESS HIM. He gave good advice on what frames looked best on me; of course, I chose the pair he said was most fashionable: a tawny thick wide frame that would be very hipster if in black. The only downside to my experience with Eye Carumba was how long it took to get my finished glasses, three to four weeks. The lab kept messing up on my lenses - but that isn't Eye Carumba's fault at all. They kept me updated on what was happening and were very courteous. When I went to pick up my new frames, the person (Paul?) adjusted the new frames and the old frames I got from a different optometrist. He thoroughly explained how to care and clean these frames - stuff I should have heard before but never did. Years later, this is still the best optometry office I have ever been to. For me, ensuring I have a really good eye exam is key- and I can always trust that Eye Carumba is doing that for me. Even today, when I had my screaming (literally) infant with me, Dr. Yeh was super patient and thorough. After the exam (when said infant decided to stop screaming and be super cute- thanks kid, you couldn't have done that earlier?!) I decided to look at glasses with one of the staff and I was even able to find frames that I love! The staff there is REALLY GOOD at finding frames that flatter your face. I've had three optometrists in my life, all of whom have been great, but after one visit with Dr. Torres, he is far and away my favorite/the best. I went in for my yearly eye exam, and first off, Dr. Torres was incredibly friendly and easy to talk to. (I've always managed to have good relationships with eye doctors...I went to the same college as my socal optometrist's son so we bonded over that back in the day) but Dr. Torres was just a really nice guy and i appreciated our discussion about medical/graduate school and working in a science or medical field. Anyway, in terms of his doctoring ability, I have a "condition" (extremely minor/not serious, but still worth being careful about) that was diagnosed a couple years ago, but Dr. Torres explained it in so much more detail than my previous doctor. He told me exactly what I should do if it flares up or how I could better avoid it (something my past optometrist kind of glossed over). I didn't even realize how much information i was missing until this most recent visit. He even suggested the cheapest place I could buy my contacts, even though it wasn't through Eye Carumba. Now that's clearly someone not in it for the profit, but for the patients. read more

I was beyond impressed with Dr. Torres and his staff. Dr. Torres is professional yet friendly and seems genuinely interested in his patients, his staff knows VSP insurance forwards and backwards, all of his equipment appeared to be very cutting edge, and the candy at the receptionist desk was super (Starburst and Tootsie Rolls, among others). I can't speak for the glasses b/c my eye exam revealed I did not need any vision correction. Ha ha four-eyed bitches! A huge selling point: Dr. Torres does not use the dreaded air puff eye test. Instead he drops in a couple of 'numbing eye-drops' and uses a little stick...painless and quick. Another selling point but only if you are an air polluting ass: parking is free at the Embarcadero Center garage for up to 4 hours on Saturdays with validation from Dr. Torres' office. If you make your appointment early enough you could make it to the fabulous Ferry Building Farmer's Market across the street while your car happily waits for you in the usually $8 per hour garage. I overheard someone say, "I've been coming to Dr. Torres for 20 years, so I babble-babble-inaudible-no-longer-paying-attention." 20 years? Dr. T looks forty at most, and that's even with the mental age-progression a la America's Most Wanted. WTF? Anyway, he's great. Very knowledgeable, personable, bow-tie-sportable, and entertaining. -able. He tells me he used to work at another office and brought his clients with him when he went into business for himself, so he's got a loyal base and has had a stable bottom line from the beginning. Says a lot. Also, my search for Elvis Costello NHS glasses has gone on for years. IT IS PAST. I chose this frame from a crop of eight or so I was digging, so their selection is tip top. Staff is friendly and patient, willing to let you take a key and grab a bunch of frames to sit and compare, then advise you when you want/need it. read more

Short & Sweet Review--- This place is amazing. I just moved to the SF area and was a bit worried about finding a new eye doctor, as I'm very particular. I searched Yelp and found them to be top notch. I made an appointment, as the receptionist was very nice & helpful (first impressions make a world of difference). The day came for my appointment and was still a bit nervous, as my eyes were bugging me and I was worried as to what it might be. I saw Dr. Yeh and he was very professional, nice & welcoming. We did some simple tests and he diagnosed my problem very easily (but knew exactly what he was doing). He explained everything to me and didnt' seem annoyed by any means when I asked him about 50 questions regarding my diagnosis. He seemed genuinely concerned and took into consideration that I didn't have insurance (which was extremely helpful). All in all, I found an amazing optometrist and will continue using Eye Carumba as long as I live in the SF area. He even deducted the original amount (what I was quoted on the phone for exam & prescription) by a good amount, and I couldnt' have been more thankful. Great doctors, great staff, clean facility. The only downside is it's a bit tricky to find...but nothing a few minutes ahead of time won't help! read more

This review is long overdue, as I had my first visit in September of this year. What drew me to Eye Caramba was 1) the cute name; 2) its proximity to my office; 3) the fact that both doctors are Cal grads (Go Bears!); and of course, 4) the positive Yelp reviews. I wasn't disappointed! My appointment was with Dr. Yeh and he was personable and thorough. The office was clean and modern and I was in and out of there during my lunch break. I've been coming here for three years and have had my eyes checked by both Dr. Yeh and Dr. Torres, and I have to say I am always impressed by their thoroughness, professionalism, and friendliness. They test everything from eyesight, astigmatism, to the pressure level of your eyes, and take the time to explain things to you if you have any questions or concerns, even the stupid questions. I love how the doctors are so personable and chatty that you don't really feel like you're at the doctor's. I like that their office is clean and modern-looking, which gives it a sophisticated and welcoming feel. Presentation of a clinic is important too in addition to the doctor's skills and I think Eye Carumba got both. The receptionists are really friendly and good about following up with you when someone cancels their appointment and they can squeeze you in. I am also pleased with the fact that they don't try to sell you their glasses. Although I've never bought a frame from there, they have some pretty tasteful ones. If you are looking for trendy frames, this is not the place for you. Their frames tend to be more classy and mature-looking. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Eye Carumba to anyone, this is the best optometry experience I've ever had and I'm going to keep coming back! read more

11/11/2009 update Gave them one star back. A different person, Mary Ella called me back this morning first thing. I wish I would have spoke with her in the first place. She was very nice and apologized for the confusion and let me know that the person that called me back yesterday was confused and that of course I can come get my glasses anytime and that the dilation had nothing to do with whether or not I could pick up my glasses rather that they hope to do it all at the same time to save me another trip. I would say besides this little mix up, I would still recommend them to anyone! 11/10/2009 update I'm going to have to downgrade my review. So someone from the office just called to tell me that my glasses are ready for pick up! Faster than I expected, great. However, at the last appt I had I asked if I could postpone my pupil dilation until a later date, which Dr. Yeh agreed to because I can't seem to work after its done since it gives me a headache. However, he supposedly wrote on my chart that I was not allowed to pick up my glasses until I got my pupils dilated? Fine let's do the dilation. No, I'm sorry Dr. Yeh is on vacation so you can't pick up your glasses until he's back? So let me get this straight, I can't get an appt to get my pupils dilated because he is on vacation but I can't pick up my glasses because I can't get my pupils dilated? I make the next available appt which is not until next week. So I can't get my glasses until next week? So basically, I am blind until next week even though my glasses, which I have paid in full already, are sitting in their office? I'm really not sure what one has to do with the other. I thought I was clear that I needed replacement glasses cause I lost my glasses which was my #1 priority, but apparently their #1 priority is to hold my glasses hostage until I get my pupils dilated even though I just made the next available appointment which is not until next week? At the end of our call she tells me she would check with the other doctor to see if he would let me get my glasses today since I desperately need them. Then, doesn't call me back today so I am yet another day without glasses. Talk about frustrating! read more

I was looking for a new optometrist since I'm a little far from Berkeley. My only real requirement was that they couldn't use the air puff test for the glaucoma testing. I was too spoiled by the new technology that Berkeley used during my almost decade long stay as a student. I made an appt for Dr. Torres and he's quite busy, which is a good sign! When I met Dr. Torres, I see his diploma behind him, and a huge relief..he went to Cal! That's a great school for optometry. He's extremely personable and answers all my questions. I told him about a friend who went to Cal for Opto school and was so excited that they could diagnose lung cancer by doing a routine exam. This was his first year but by the time 3rd year came, my friend forgot about it. Dr. Torres said that was true but it would have to be pretty advanced lung cancer...He then goes on and tells me he diagnosed someone with classic signs of a brain tumor!!!! Ok, anyways, those are just some examples of how personable he is. Very knowledgeable too. He's ready to do the glaucoma test and he's not doing it like what Berkeley does it, but instead he takes this instrument and pokes my eye. It doesn't hurt. It's just a little uncomfortable. It beats the air puff test by far! Oh yeah, I told him about someone who works at Kaiser as an optometrist. This guy I met didn't have much credibility since he was saying Cal is sooo hard to get into when I just had a bunch of friends were just accepted. He also said that Cal's examination is way too comprehensive and outside academia it's not like that at all. They will only check vision, no dilating the eyes etc. I told Dr. Torres and he got so upset. He says you HAVE TO check for certain things. It's so important! That just told me how passionate he was about his profession! I love Dr. Torres!!!! btw, they fixed my broken glasses for free!...however I will be getting new ones. read more

I used to work nearby but for the last 10 years I've been making the annual (and sometimes more) trek from my home in the east bay to visit him and his staff. This is one of those places that I am hesitant to rate if only because I have such consistently outstanding experiences that I want to be selfish and keep it all to myself and keep the trend of getting appointments easily going on. However... 120+ reviews with 5 stars overall, and I STILL am getting consistently outstanding service... I might as well throw my 5 into the pool too. Dr. Yeh is absolutely fantastic, as is his front-desk staff. They all know my file inside and out, and Dr. Yeh has patiently guided me through multiple lens trials down to the cleaning regiment to help me get the best experience with my contacts - which I've been wearing for almost two decades now without any real changes. Maybe it's because I've suffered silently without realizing it, but more likely because past optometrists just haven't taken the time to really listen to my experience and do their damndest to improve it like Dr. Yeh has. He's squeezed me in for 15 minute check-ins just to see how this trial is going, and has recommended solutions that have netted out in my being so, so happy with my system. Not only does he listen and provide thoughtful answers, but he explains everything he's doing during the check up and gives you 100% of his attention when you're in that chair. I recommend Eye Carumba without hesitation, with all my heart and with my superior, laser-eyed 20/20 vision. read more

Eye Carumba is simply the best. I have been coming here since the office opened (in fact I moved to Eye Carumba to follow my optometrist when he opened this shop). The staff couldn't be nicer or more helpful. The selection of frames is good and always includes some eclectic options along with the safer specs. Your appointment starts at the appointed time. There is never an issue with insurance. But the best thing about Eye Carumba is Dr. Joe. Joseph Torres. Go see him (ha!). He is such a wonderful person and a great optometrist. If it wouldn't take him out of the office for so long, I would beg him to go to dental school so he could be my dentist too. read more

I had the most pleasant, productive eye exam I've ever had today with Dr. Joe Torres. He was on time, friendly, informative, and told me things I'd never heard about my own eyes after over forty years of eye exams. (My cornea is flat, my eyeballs are big...amazing!) The exam was quite thorough. In fact, he spent nearly an entire hour with me, answered all the questions I had, and didn't push either products or services on me. His office was easy to get to (be sure to go up a level in the Embarcadero Center building, it's not on ground level) and his staff was easy to deal with. On top of everything he took my insurance, so my exam including a contact lens replacement was just $135. On my way out he gave me a handsome case for my glasses, free of charge. Dr. Torres will be my optometrist forever. I'm so glad I found him. read more

I researched for a week before going to my first eye doctor in about 10 years. I decided on Eye Carumba because of the great yelp reviews, the friendly staff person who answered the phone and the reasonable price. The last exam I got (10 years ago on the east coast) was from one of those chain stores where you get a great deal--exam and 2 pairs of glasses for like 80 bucks. When I called a similar chain here in SF the staff person was eager to get me off the phone, could not answer simple questions about the examination and just didn't make me feel like he cared much at all. Another place I was considering was City Contacts. They had good reviews but I couldn't get over their exorbitant price ($187 for non-insured, at that's a one-time deal). E.C. was much less but still significantly more than a chain. But I wanted to see an expert, someone who wouldn't factory me through the assembly line. The price, still reasonable, was completely worth it. The entire experience was pleasant and I felt like I was in good hands. The staff was friendly and treated me with kindness. Dr. Torres took the time to get to know me, he did a thorough exam and answered all of my questions with enthusiasm and care. He really loves what he does. The results of my exam were this: The glasses I had been prescribed 10 years ago were completely wrong for my eyes (which is why I never wore them--they never felt right). I had gone to two eye doctors in the past both of whom told me I would only be able to get glasses that would allow me to see close up but blur the distance. Dr. Torres carefully worked with me and presented me with the perfect correction--I could use these glasses to see close up and far away. Not bi-focals, it was an astigmatism correction. After my exam I felt so relaxed because I finally knew what was really going on with my eyes. It was a great feeling that has actually given me a boost of confidence these past few weeks. I feel like I am in control of my vision now, whereas before I often thought, what's going on with my eyes? The not knowing made me anxious and I don't think I realized how much that was effecting my confidence in general. Dr. Torres is very competent, efficient, caring and does an amazing job making you feel comfortable. He makes sure you understand your condition and is very patient to explain what you don't understand. I felt like he took his time to provide me with a personalized and thorough appointment. I appreciate his competence! No doubt, a 5 star doctor! I'm giving 4 starts because the reception staff was a bit slow, didn't know to answer my questions ref. Insurance and didn't make an effort to figure out the answers right away and left me hanging with "we don't know how much it's gonna cost but we will send you a bill". Not sure if this is the procedure, but I'd like to know how much I'm paying for my appointment right away. I wish all doctors were as good as Dr. Yeh, that would make my life and other lives so much better. But at least there is Dr. Yeh, who I guess makes up for some of the "bad" doctors I have seen. Not only does he know his "stuff" but he also has a great rapport with his patients. He always remembers all the "other" important stuff in my life in addition to my eye problems, like I am a "climber" and where I work. I am sad I won't be seeing him much anymore since I have had laser vision correction surgery by someone that he had recommended to me. Now, I guess I will just have to send all my friends his way. Bonus that the office staff is friendly and it's always easy to get an appointment that week. read more

I always enjoy places with a good pun in the name. To make Eye Carumba even better, it's located just downstairs from my office. I was having some serious contact lens issues and I decided it was time to go see the eye doctor. Dr. Valdez informed me that the type of solution I was using wasn't properly cleaning my contacts. She recommended a new solution that has been working wonders for me. Unfortunately, Dr. Valdez isn't there anymore, but Dr. Yeh has been a great replacement! He's very personable, but also maintains a high level of professionalism. I thought he was very knowledgeable and thorough during my exam. He was also sympathetic to my prescription increasing .5 from my last visit (curse you excel!). You know this practice is good because they don't try to pressure you purchase your contacts or glasses here. In fact, Dr. Yeh said that if I didn't like the selection at Eye Carumba I could go anywhere and use my insurance there; which, I did because unfortunately they don't have a great selection. But, love the service and care I get here and will continue coming back for my check ups! read more

I'm so glad I found this place! Though, not so difficult to find with all the 5 star Yelp reviews. I saw Dr. Yeh to get my contacts prescription updated (it was probably 3 years out of date...) and he was so helpful. I had to try multiple trial pairs until we found the right prescription and the most comfortable lens for me, but now it's great. He explained everything to me about what he was doing, and the pros and cons of different lenses, and did not make me feel rushed. He's a great optometrist. Everyone who works here that I've interacted with has been friendly and helpful, and my contacts came in in just 2 days. read more
