Only wish I lived closer! I first saw Dr. Cohen eh, oh, errr, about 35+ years ago when his office was on the other side of Lincoln. I've lived all over the country and Hawaii and I have never been to a better eye doctor than, Dr. Cohen. Even specialists with all sorts of fancier credentials were not able to fit and correct my astigmatism and near-sightedness like Dr. Barry has. When I lived closer, whenever I had eye emergencies (eyelash under eyelid - ouch!), I called his office and viola, he always made the time to take care of me ASAP. He even fitted my former husband with contact lenses after his second round of cornea transplants. Dr. Cohen is the best! Open an office in the Philadelphia area, please! read more

Dr. Cohen is amazing!! Best eye doctor I have ever seen. He has a very thorough knowledge of MS and how it can affect the eyes. I have recurring eye infections which leave my eyes blood shot red and after I see Dr. Cohen, no more red!! That is a huge plus for me. I have been a patient of Barry's since 1998 and he is an amazing doctor. He has saved my sight 3 times and has the greatest bedside manner! He feels like a family friend. Quick, painless, and old school in that he actually cares about the patients! Seems like a two person operation there but they probably like it that way. Went to Eye Concepts to have my eyeglasses adjusted. While I waited, i thought I would look at frames. They were INDIVIDUALLY LOCKED UP!!! Never been in an eyeglass place like that before. Then, the woman at the desk asked if I was a customer. When I said no, she said there would be a CHARGE for the adjustment!. Never heard that before in an eyeglass store, either. Glad that Dr. Cohen gets great reviews, because this place has nothing else going for it. read more

I had such a horrible experience here from the moment I stepped in, and made the mistake of staying for the complete appointment and exam and then purchasing my contacts from them. Dr. Cohen, while very nice and thorough, was incredible condescending and really aggressive in getting the contacts into my eyes. Nothing about my experience made me feel at ease. As for his staff, all of the reviews are spot on. They are unhelpful and downright rude. There were also really ridiculous charges added on to my bill that were NOT mentioned. Don't waste your time, your money or your energy. There are plenty of other eye doctors. read more

I have been going to Dr. Cohen for several years and always had a great experience with him as a doctor. He's very thorough, takes his time with the exam and is open to answering questions. He is very knowledgeable and has a very nice demeaner. HOWEVER.....his office manager / assistant is an absolute horror. Every time I call she is rude and down right nasty. It actually felt like she didn't want me to continue to be a patient and was doing what she could to get rid of me. I never write reviews, but needed to put this out there. Do NOT go to Dr. Cohen if you want to deal with a nasty woman every time you schedule an appointment and go in to the office. I just saw Dr. Cohen for the first time. This was the most thorough eye exam I have ever had. I was having issues wearing my contacts and he determined that I have dry eye. He suggested contacts that are made for that issue and actually cleaned my eyes. He was able to get my prescription to 20/20, where others were only able to get to 20/40. I went to Dr. Cohen's office for about eight years, and I used to love him, but I'm going to go elsewhere now. He is a friendly man who spends time with his patients and seems to love what he does. But here are some problems I've had: 1. Three or four years ago he gave me a new prescription. The new glasses made my vision blurry, (whereas it had actually been fine, with the old prescription!). I went back to him at least three times, and he kept saying things like, oh, let's just adjust your glasses. If they sit on your nose differently, you'll see better. Finally, after about three or four times of this, he realized that he flat out messed up my prescription. The good news, is that I don't think he charged me to fix the mistake, but just wasted a lot of my time. 2. Last summer, for the first time, I actually had some troubles with my eyes, i.e., seeing flashes sometimes while driving at night. He just completely dismissed what I said, and said that it never happened! 3. His office staff is very aggressive. My wife is a very gentle non-aggressive person, as well she's not always up on what our insurance covers. She trusted the staff, and they railroaded her into $500 glasses, with all the bells and whistles, that she didn't need. Fortunately, they canceled the order the next day, so it didn't cost anything. 4. My wife also witnessed the staff really going after a lady who wrote down the serial number from some glasses on display. I guess they thought that she was going to go elsewhere to get a better deal. 5. I bought some glasses there once, and one of the nose pads fell out after about one month. Put it all together, and I will go elsewhere now. read more

I was looking forward to my appointment with Dr. Cohen given the great reviews here, but basically had the worst experience ever with his receptionist, so ended up walking out without meeting the doctor. She is incredibly rude and will yell at you if you ask any questions. There are plenty of other great optometrists who have better receptionists and I would much rather take my business elsewhere. I also realized that Yelp has a bunch of negative reviews of this doctor hidden away and the majority are about the receptionist. read more

Finally getting around to write my review for Eye Concepts. I will start by saying that I do really like Dr. Cohen, and I was going to him for a few years. He has always been nice and kind, and seems to be knowledgeable in what he does. However, I really think that when we pay for a doctor's services we should not get such terrible service from his staff. Practically every time I have had to deal with his receptionist, she has been difficult in one way or another and basically just not a kind person. I do not know if this receptionist is still working there, but it is a shame that one person can ruin an otherwise good thing! read more

I had a terrible experience with Barry @ Eye concepts in Santa Monica. In fact I was frightened of him. I first met him in a sort of 'kitten up the tree' situation when I over wore a pair of contacts and severely injured my eyes and I had no eye doctor. At first he was very helpful and personable. As the years of eye appointments went on the 'personal' nature of the relationship began to feel more and more inappropriate. The way he looked at me, taIked to me, the way he got close to me in the appt., the personal nature of the conversations....inappropriate to a point that I would literally leave the doctors office nauseated and in tears. He would often come to visit me at the cafe that I worked at. I realized that this was not the sort of relationship one should have with an eye doctor so the last time I went and left crying and disgusted I vowed never to return. BUT unfortunately the new prescription he gave me was wrong and the contacts which all together cost $350 were all wrong. So I had to go back. I didn't want to sit through another nose to nose appt/conversation with him. So I returned with no appt asked for my money back for the appt since the prescription was wrong and I wanted to return my contacts. We had a whole heated conversation about the whole thing and he refused to give me a refund. So I lost $350 to him but now I have a normal eye doctor that doesn't undress me with his eyes :) hoooray for progress read more

I have never been to a doctor's office quite to this level of penny pinching. I have a lot of experience in seeing optometrists over the years and have never been charged for so much and so often for followups and basic care. Not to mention, Dr. Cohen is EXTREMELY pushy and trying to sell his patients products and services the entire time when all you are looking for is a basic prescription for contacts and glasses. Perhaps they should begin to care more about their patients than about making a dollar and will see bigger ROI for the office. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone unless you enjoy feeling taken advantage of. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Cohen's for over ten years. My RX is extremely high and I have many bad experiences with other doctors in the course of treatment. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for. If you are looking for the cheapest deal on lenses/exams, this is not the office for you. If you are looking for a doctor with great expertise who will take care of your eyes (even when you don't), Barry is your doctor. Don't go!!! Dr Cohen was rough with my eyes, the foreign receptionist (complete with pointy hat, warts, and broom), tried to rip me off by saying that my insurance only covers when I get a fitting and contacts together through them and billed me for that and the exam (instead of just the co-pay), but when I told her that I had a flex spending account to use on the contacts, she got all gooey and said "just the co-pay then". And she told me that I have to pay for contact training, which I'm pretty sure is suppose to be a part of the contact fitting! Finally I wanted a copy of my exam with my vision prescription and that's when I saw the witch roar her ugly head! She said no way, can't do that, we don't do that here....then Dr Cohen stepped in and filled one out for me. By law that's mine!!!! I finally got out of there with my papers and partially wet underpants. I called around and almost all other eye places include the training in the contact fitting fee and they didn't argue with me. If you go be prepared to get yelled at and cleaned out! read more

Its been a couple of years since I last wrote a review on this amazing doctor and his staff. Since then both my wife and I have had two examinations each. The staff is friendly and professional and is really good at suggesting how to maximize your insurance coverages and selecting glasses. But recently I had an experience that I would like to share because it tells you something about Dr. Cohen. I had a contact pop into the back of my eye which I could not get out. So I called the office and they fit me in asap. Dr. Cohen put some dye in my eye, found that the contact had in fact been removed but that I had an eyelid in my eye which needed to be removed. With steady hand, Dr. Cohen did that in a flash. He refused to charge me! This is the type of doctor you will get when visiting him. Wonderful! read more

I have been living here 4.5 years and in 2011 I started selecting all my doctors for CA. I have been to many optometerists since elementary school. I can tell you that the individualized service that you get here is not comparable to a chain or mall type office. As far as staff is concerned, she is efficient and to the point. When you add this to an accent it does seem somewhat abrupt. But I have been the only support staff in an office before and when phones rings you don't have time to be discussing the weather and shooting the breeze. My only complaint is that I made an online appointment was told it was okay, but then I have gotten two additional calls I am assuming to change the appointment but the message is not detailed. Clearly, if I am making online appointments, I don't have time for phone calls. Leave a message, send an email, I am on the text notifications. It is Thanksgiving week, so after the phone tag, I will still end up having to call first thing today to figure out if my appointment is still on...This is the only star deduction. read more

I think Dr. Cohen and his staff are the bomb. I've been going to Dr. Cohen for years. I was lucky enough to find him originally because his office is in my neighborhood but he'd be worth traveling to for sure. He's an excellent doctor who is extremely knowledgeable. The added bonus is he has a great personality, genuinely cares about his patients and is fun to talk to. He makes you feel comfortable and at ease and makes sure your well informed about everything that is going to be done and what exactly is going on with your eyes. I highly recommend him to everyone. My first experience was good (I was looking to be fitted for contacts), but my second exam was not. After trying contacts, I realized that they were not for me, and returned to wearing glasses only. Thus, for my second visit, I only wanted to get an exam for lenses, but Dr. Cohen insisted on doing a contact exam as well. So I paid for the contact exam, but won't be returning. read more

It was time to get my eyes looked at. I always had perfect clear vision and still do thanks to Barry Cohen. They just were irritated a lot and i didn't know why. So.. I looked in the phone book and made a few ten or fifteen calls with varying results. Mostly bad initial customer service from most of the Optometrists or a waiting list that was out till the end of the month. So...I cant do that. Nor could i afford going to a discount warehouse to get my eyes looked at by some half rate Newbie. So I asked around and was referred by a client of mine to go see Barry Cohen. I called Eye Concepts and talked with a courteous female who got me in that week.. I was cautious as usual. Looking at everything. Trying to find a reason to leave...couldn't find one. In fact. I was impressed with how well i was treated by everyone. I felt like they took personal interest in my wellfare and didn't push products in my face or any of that crazy salesman stuff. They were genuine good people. Which isnt easy to find. My eyes were tested thoroughly and it turned out that the reason they were irritated was my lashes were growing inward. Yep. No fun. I was pleased with the professionalism by Barry and his staff. I felt comfortable the whole time. And i rarely say that about anyone. I will referr anyone to Eye Concepts. And i will go back for regular check ups in the coming years. I am not one for doctor visits or even going near a hospital so it was not easy initially. I know you can't mess around when it comes to eye sight. I needed an answer and i wanted the best. i am glad i found an honest Optometrist. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Cohen's for 6-7 years and he is fantastic. Unfortunately, his recent office manager is cold, unsympathetic and sometimes simply rude. The other employees are and have been warm and wonderful. If you can avoid the manager, do so at all costs. Dr. Cohen has all the latest gadgets and seems very knowledgeable - pleasant demeanor - but he's one of those fast talking doctors who is more invested in showing how clever he is than anything else. And the woman at the front desk is a horror. She's looking for a fight over everything, and she finds it - whether you start out feeling like a fight or not. I didn't feel like a fight. I just wanted new glasses. She actually argued with me over every detail of my order (frame choice, lens choice, etc...). Then, unfortunately, the prescription didn't work for me - I couldn't see - so I went back. Dr. Cohen, in his pleasant, fast-talking, gadget-filled way assured me that I had the right prescription, then told the bouncer/receptionist to charge me for the visit and fled the building, leaving her to do her dirty work. I can't believe they would charge for a visit that was precipitated by my being dissatisfied by the service - but apparently Dr. Cohen doesn't talk to anyone without being paid for it, and the scary foreign lady who guards his door makes sure of it. I wasn't impressed with the quality of service, the integrity, or the customer service. Sheister is the word that comes to mind. I would never go back. read more
