Still good. The eye exam is always excellent, the front-of-house could use improvement. The lobby area is EXTREMELY loud, and they have a gentleman who works there and when he speaks and is on the phone, he speaks in a booming voice, and is far too loud and it is hard to have a conversation with the other worker there. They could use some noise absorption in the lobby area, or, have everyone talk much, much softer. read more

PLEASE DO NOT TRUST THIS BUSINESS with your optical needs. I highly do not recommend this business. I was overcharged for my contact lens exam despite doing my due diligence and checking coverage when making my appointment. At the end of my visit, I was told to pay an amount WAY higher than I anticipated from my initial call. I asked why the higher charge and was told my insurance would not cover my contact lens exam, despite being told during the initial appointment call it would). The rep said she would put a temporary lower amount charge (~$170) while she figured out the issue with my insurance. She never figured it out and I never was refunded any amount. When picking up my trial contact lens, I asked the rep (another employee) for a refund. She said it had been too long since the charge, so I could not be refunded. I filed a dispute with AMEX but it was 60+ days since the charge and have not received a refund. I will add that I work as a physician and the reason I could not pick up trial contacts within 60 days or notice the lack of a refund was that I was working long 80-hour work weeks in the ICU setting. I am highly disappointed in this business -- both as a patient, but also as a member of the medical field. read more

Lorry has a sixth sense for what will and won't work and everyone else is just as cheerful and knowledgeable. I went in as a first time customer and purchased a pair of glasses after my exam. First and foremost, the eye doctor was outstanding. She was knowledgeable, kind, and gave me a thorough examination. However, the business is ran so terribly I will not be back and would like to warn others before they get burned like me: ⁃ There were hidden charges at checkout that were not discussed or explained prior to my checkout ⁃ They informed me they would send an invoice within the next few hours to understand these charges, but I didn't receive it until days later when I inquired about it ⁃ It took over a month to get my glasses (I was initially told to expect them within two week at the latest) ⁃ They didn't reach out to me once about any of the delays ⁃ I always reached out to them. They consistently failed to follow-up. They were defensive, told conflicting stories, and passed blame to others, even though the primary issue was their own failed communication. ⁃ They said they'd do something to rectify the delay/ communication errors. I was likely told another lie as it's been almost two months now and I've yet to hear back from them. ⁃ I also discovered they charged me almost $300 over the retail value of the glasses This place isn't worth the time or the money you'll waste coming here. It's a shame because I intentionally sought this business out to support my local community... but this entire experience has been so disrespectful and their defensive attitudes made this an easy review. I had my eyes checked there for my prescription. I am immunocompromised and am very grateful that they agreed to wear masks while I was in their store. The exam was very thorough and the optometrist was very nice, as was everyone else. I totally recommend anyone looking to get an eye exam, where they don't need an Ophthalmologist, to go to Eye Q in Jamaica Plain. They also have a nice selection of frames to choose from. read more

I would not use this location and recommend getting your vision needs taken care of elsewhere. I was overcharged for my glasses and by a significant amount. My glasses were a month late. When I brought it to their attention regarding the pricing on the glasses they acknowledged I was overcharged and would be refunded the difference. That obviously did not occur and was told it would on 3 separate occasions. I just stopped following up as I got a sense this is how they normally operate their business, excuses and delays. I bought a pair of glasses from Eye Q a year ago. At about the 6-month mark I detected a hairline crack starting to develop at the edge of the frame right where the frame is tightened to hold in the lens. Clearly the frame was too tight around the lens. The crack continued to grow to the point where it is now nearly an inch long. I took the glasses back to Eye Q, thinking they would replace the lens for free, given that this problem was caused by them or their lens supplier. They said they'd get back to me, but they never did. Steer clear of this business because they don't stand behind their product. read more

I only started coming here as the other eye exam place in JP doesn't accept my new insurance. I normally wear contacts and usually spend my insurance monies on contacts. The staff in front proceeded to tell me why glasses are a better deal - which, yes, may be useful but it really is a wash since I only get new glasses every few years. In general, they are ok, I don't feel they are super thrilled about their job, but they are competent. The eye exam itself was fine, I met with Dr. Abbott who is nice but couldn't really give me more direction to certain health questions. Getting the contacts was a whole other matter - it took over a month b/c their scheduling and delivery operations is horrible. The front reception seems like a jumbled mess and I had to go back a few times. A few of the times there were fast food bags and a pizza box on the reception counter. Their office is small, there likely isn't a staff kitchen / break area... but c'mon really, on the reception counter? Choice of frames is very slim and didn't email of my Rx's to me, I had to follow up. I think I may have better luck going to Costco. read more

Eye glasses. I have been wearing eye glasses since kindergarten. In fact when I first started wearing eye glasses as a little cub I would regularly burst into tears and throw them across the class room, and then of course, pee myself silly and get sent home to change my drawers. Over the years I have learned not to soil myself when I put my glasses on, but going for new glasses still inspires some degree of incontinence. The set up: *Wife has eye check up and gets new scrips so we go shopping, boy, girl and dog enter little JP Eye-Q store. *Steven (dude that works there) is really nice to her and helps her pick out some real oooh-la-la (insert cat call sounds) frames. Thank god for gay men who know how to politely say ' No Dear, you might try a frame that looks a little more like this' because otherwise the oooh-la-la would have been more of a 'No you don't girl, OH NO'. Three stars just for that. *I get jealous that wife got new glasses so I get a new scrip and head over to Eye-Q and I get the same advice from Steven. I am now no longer wearing my bargain bin LensCrafters shit ball sun glass frames. I am now, some how, wearing something close to 'mildly fashionable'. *Because of our repeat business and quite possibly because these nice gay boys have pity on us pathetic straight people, we received numerous discounts and got really good prices on our glasses. *My drawers are clean. read more

A revision: My initial experiences at Eye Q were ridiculously frustrating and difficult. I had no intention of going back, but the owner's responses were encouraging, so I took him up on his offer to fix my sunglasses. This was a much more satisfying interaction - the job was done well, the staff much more genuine and receptive, and the fact that Paul extended an honest welcome after I'd bashed the crap out of his business was...well...pretty classy. I had a great experience with Eye Q on Centre St., especially Jamil (sp?). I walked in to inquire about tools that would allow me to adjust my frames, and instead Jamil took them and did it for free, without me even asking. Also, noticing my glasses were a bit dirty, he cleaned them when he was done, and told me more about my frames and how I can adjust them in the future. FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE. I found a deal in amazon local, $ 9 for a 200 dollar voucher towards a complete pair of prescription glasses. Before purchasing the voucher I checked their website and read some reviews. Sounded like a good place, so I decided to purchase the deal. 2 months later I went to EYE Q to purchase my pair of glasses! Melissa who works there was super nice and helpful( since I went by myself she helped me pick out 2 pairs)! Not only did I get wonderful customer service, but Melissa offered me a second amazon voucher. Frames are a bit pricy for them not to have name brand glasses, but they seem to have good quality glasses. Looking forward to picking up my 2 pairs of glasses in a few days. I recently got my first pair of glasses at Cambridge Eye Doctors They didn't last, the prescription was wrong and the experience just generally sucked. It was more like being in a mattress sales cattle call as opposed to a situation of medical necessity. Then I remembered that I did some work about ten years ago for Eye Q and that the owner told the crew "if you ever need glasses come see us". So I did. Upon entering the very cozy JP store I was greeted enthusiastically by the two friendly and helpful staff members. Since I had called ahead I was in the exam chair pretty much immediately. After a VERY thorough examination and a look at the crappy glasses that I got at the "my first glasses" store, It was determined that I'm getting old, the original prescription was way off and progressive lenses might be the answer to my woes. OK, done deal. Sign me up. Next step: Now I have a giant fat head. "off the rack" glasses do not fit me, ever. Luckily Steven, who I believe is the branch manager in JP also has a large noggin and he was able to narrow my search down to the five or so frames that fit his similarly sized melon, which saved a huge amount of time in finding the perfect frame. We both picked a nice looking frame that was strong enough for my occupation but also really nice looking and comfortable. This was a case where I thought I wanted something else, but this guy was totally honest about it, told me how bad it looked and directed towards something more appropriate for my situation. His advice was humorous and never condescending and that was appreciated. Right as the transaction was winding down, I mentioned that the owner had offered me some sort of consideration about ten years ago. Steven gave him a call and within minutes I was hooked up big time. Even without that aspect, this was a total success and I will continue to be a patron of Eye Q whenever I need new specs. i just got my first pair of glasses at eye q. Both Steven and Richard were SUPER helpful with letting me try on a dozen pairs before settling. I had to ahve come back maybe 4 times to look at the glasses again with various friends/family members and they didnt care, they would sell the glasses at me all over again, helping me convince my family that the glasses I wanted worked for me. Pretty darn pleased. I called last week to set up an appointment and was able to get one the following day. My exam with Yana was both thorough and comfortable (though the dilation part is never my favorite). I brought eyeglass frames (not from Eye Q) and they were happy to make the lenses. Paul was honest about the compared cost of contact lenses both through them and online, and he itemized my receipts and prescriptions so that they weren't complete gibberish. In the world of small opticians and large chains, this kind of honesty and friendly service is outstanding! As an added bonus, Eye Q accepts most insurance plans. It's true. I did not get glasses at Eye Q, but I was there one night for JP First Thursdays, visiting a friend's art exhibit, when the owner said to my girlfriend, "I have just the glasses for you." He handed her a pair, she put them on and everyone started raving. She tried on others, but a week later, went back and bought those glasses. BONUS: He didn't charge her for the lenses and didn't make her take a new eye exam. EXTRA BONUS: They called to say the glasses were in at 6:30pm, after hours. They have an uncanny ability to help you select just the right look. They also help with the technical side: recommending the right coatings and lenses for your lifestyle. The care they take with fitting the glasses (and drop in requests for fittings, because you always take your glasses off the wrong way - by one bow) lets you know they want you to be completely comfortable with your glasses. However, two stars is the MAX I can give this place. The staff in the shop are rude and actually made fun of a customer after he left (!!!) while I was waiting for my appointment. After my appointment, Dr. Abbott told me that my prescription would be emailed to me. It's now July and I haven't received it yet. I tried calling them several times, but every time the phone just rings and rings without anyone picking up or going to voicemail. I really liked Dr. Abbott but the rude salesclerks combined with the severe lack of communication means that I won't be coming back. read more

Eye Q in JP is amazing. I had been going somewhere else, but my roommate dragged me with her when they were having a great sale, and not only did I get a great deal, but they were amazing. The staff is incredibly supportive and gently guides you toward the right pair, but they're not overbearing and generally incredibly low-key. They genuinely want to help you find the right pair. When I came to pick them up after only a few days, the person working was amazing, and he sized my glasses more quickly than anyone ever - he did it in about three minutes flat. Wandered in one afternoon because my Ray-Ban sunglasses (bought elsewhere) were missing a screw. Super friendly guy at the counter scrounged around for one that would fit, and even asked if I cared if the replacement screw was silver rather than gold. I started going to Eye Q in Harvard Square not too long after they opened. Lucky me, they decided to open shop in JP, so I go there now. This is a review of my experiences in both stores, over many years. The exams are thorough: they really spend time tweaking you prescription to get it right, and will take extra efforts if any issues arise. All of the optometrists are among the best I've seen, and unfortunately I've had glasses since fifth grade so that's a hell of a lot of optometrists we're talking about. The frames are AWESOME and unique and flattering and fab and you will not find them anywhere else. And best of all, the store staff is sooooo good I now can't imagine going anywhere else. They really know how to look at your face & style and hook you up with frames that suit you. And they will be honest, in the nicest possible way. Do those frames make your nose look like a potato? They tell you! Do the red frames make you look like your 80 year old granny? They tell you! If your glasses could make your butt look big, I'm pretty sure they'd tell you. And then they direct you to glasses that transform you to to pre-Brad Angelina. Or pre-Angelina Brad, if you like. Really. I think they guarantee that. AND BEST OF ALL, they run great specials and bargains-- 2 for one, groupon, etc. Oh, if everything in life were this good.... read more

This review is specifically for Dr. Kim Hsiao. Excellent attention and expertise. Very friendly and takes her job seriously and does it with precision. There is a plexiglass adapted to the device they use to examine you, in addition to the wearing of masks and all the precautions. Dr. Hsiao is also constantly aware of her position respect to the patient, doing all that's possible to keep her distance. Overall a very good experience with this doctor and very happy with the way she arrived to my correct contacts prescription. read more

I went in here requesting to get a lens replaced (it was badly scratched). I handed over my glasses, was told it would be $350 (more than I was hoping, but I need high-index lenses) and then was told they'd keep my frames for about 5 days to fix them. 5 days later, no glasses. I ended up waiting 22 days in total to get my glasses back, which I found outrageous. I understand that mistakes happen and that my glasses were sent to a lab (and therefore "out of their hands"), but at no point during this process did their staff or customer service do anything to try to help or make me feel better about living in prescription sunglasses for over 3 weeks instead of 5 days. They claimed they would expedite things, but nothing happened; they never offered any kind of discount or compensation; they never called me during the process to explain or notify me of any delays. And, when my glasses were finally ready and I picked them up, they told me it had taken so long because my prescription was too high and had made it difficult. My glasses have new lenses, and they seem good, but I'm very unhappy with how much I paid to wait three times longer than I was told and get no help from customer service. read more

The optometrist is great but the other shop staff answer the phone like you're bothering them. It's even worse in person, they're very short with you and quite unfriendly. If and when I need new glasses, I won't even bother looking here. Went into the store and the clerk was on a phone call. When she hung up and said hello, the phone rang again. She picked up the phone and talked with this customer while I stood there. I work in a public service job where we always help the person in front of us before we take a phone call. Callers can go to voice mail and we call back when there is no business. I mentioned that I came because I have vision insurance. She said they couldn't help me with that unless I had a card from the provider. Later the same day I went into another optical shop, they logged into the insurance company's web site, verified my coverage and filled my prescription. Definitely not going back to EyeQ. read more

I agree with everyone that the eye exams are very thorough and the optometrist (Jana) very nice, but it took two visits to get the right prescription, causing the ripple effect of three pairs of lenses at Harvard Square Eye Care (see related review there), a process which took two months start to finish to get a comfortable pair of glasses. In the meantime, closest Eye Q store in the South End went out of business, necessitating trip to JP for prescription re-do. I went to Harvard Square Eye Care for frames and lenses liking their selection and frame styles better and also for my Harvard Pilgrim discount, which in reality was a small discount off frames only. I would advise others to stay with one store for exam and glasses start to finish in case you run into the difficulties I did it would be much easier to resolve. read more
