If you are looking for a tiny, intimate place to find a new pair of glasses with an extremely friendly and honest staff, this is the place! For the size of the shop (with a tiny room in the back for the optometrist) they have a wide variety of arty/hipster frames for those looking for that kind of look. A friend of mine and I made back-to-back appointments - mine was first, his 30 minutes later. This meant that I spent at least an hour just browsing the frames waiting for my friend, but the staff didn't mind at all. Marvin is particularly awesome - he gave really candid opinions on a lot of frames and I never felt pressured to go for the more expensive brand. In fact, he often pointed out that a brand was going to be much more expensive and both him and the optometrist Jana would try to find cheaper frames for me that were similar to a more expensive pair that I liked. In fact, I ended up buying a pair that Jana picked out in this manner. Sometimes at small places like this you can feel like you are being watched at all times or that the staff is overly intrusive, but I didn't feel this way at all. When I started looking for frames Marvin made a lot of suggestions, but soon would become busy with phone calls/other customers/paperwork and would just let me be. We even made piles of "maybes" for me so I would remember which ones I liked. As a person, he was just genuinely nice and I feel like he has a lot of great stories to share; for example, he talked to one customer about how he met David Byrne (of the Talking Heads) in Providence before the band hit it big and when I was checking out we talked about our favorite Beatles albums. He also suggested some art shows to another customer who had mentioned that she was in art school. Yes, the frames are fairly pricey, but I think they're worth it. At the time my friend and I both purchased a pair and based on a deal they were having we were able to get one pair of frames free (we just had to pay for our lenses separately). Also, you're able to bring frames back for a full refund within 30 days if you aren't satisfied (I think you get 50% on the lenses if they can't use the lenses again). If I had to complain about anything, it's that I had to call multiple times in order to make an appointment and sometimes they aren't the fastest at calling you back. At the same time, I just called to check on my frames and Marvin remembered both me and my friend by name! So all in all, I highly recommend this place! read more

Best eyeglass experience ever! Extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff (Steven a saint--Richard as well!) and they did cheerfully exchange lenses that did not work out for me. My best friend has been doing my eye exam for years but since she's in New York and it's a pain to travel there for exams I decided (reluctantly) to try Eye Q... and am I glad I did! I got there a little early so Steven was able to go through their frames with me before my exam and he was awesome. He's great at what he does and I love the frames I ended up walking out there with! Yana did my eye exam and that was a great experience as well. It was probably one of the best exams I ever had and I highly recommend her. She was extremely thorough and nothing about the exam felt rushed, which is what you usually experience at some of the bigger chains. read more

Visited store after online promotion. I needed progressive lens glasses and initially they were professional. They suggested frames but I questioned whether they were suitable because of size. Proceeded with purchase and when I arrived to pick them up realized that lenses were not appropriate. They sent them back to factory for "adjustment" but still did not get them right. Subsequently could not get them to correct them but was constantly told impolitely that they were suitable for me. Could not get them to correct them. I long ago made a rule that I am not allowed to pick out glasses without adequate supervision. After 5 minutes of trying to find frames that don't look bizzare on my giant head, I usually give up, or pick out the safest (read: boring) option. Well, thank heaven for Steven, who recognized my terror and very sweetly took over. He picked out a range of frames to choose from -but not so many that my eye twitch kicked in. Even better, the frames I ended up going with were ones I never would have picked up on my own; they're even (dare I say it) slightly fashionable. But the best part was just how fun the whole experience was, even for my poor girlfriend who I dragged along for the ride. Someday (when my bank account can handle it) I'll start thinking of my glasses as a fashion statement, and I'll be back for another pair. read more

I decided to go to EYE Q for a new pair of glasses because they are so convenient (I live right in JP) and because of all of the raving reviews that they got on Yelp. I was not disappointed! They helped me pick out the perfect pair, and it was not a pair that I ever would have tried on on my own. They had fantastic service, and it was a very personal experience, both because it's a small neighborhood shop and because they design most of their own frames, so they take a lot of pride in their merchandise and know it well. They are definitely on the pricey side (literally 3 times the price I have paid for previous pairs), so don't expect any big bargain, but a wonderful local business with a great product. read more

I came here for an eye exam. Dr. Cheng was very nice and the eye exam went well. Before the exam, however, I had made sure with Dr. Cheng that my insurance would cover the exam and she confirmed it did. A few weeks later I receive a $130 bill from some guy named David for my visit. Why would you tell me the eye exam will be covered by my insurance provider when its really not?! This very unprofessional and now I have to shed out $130 that I would not have to pay for since my insurance covers basic eye exams. First and last time going to EyeQ. Don't know if it was an honest mistake or maybe they wanted to make a quick buck, but now I'm short $130 for an eye exam that should have been covered by my insurance provider. I wouldn't recommend going here. The customer service was pretty bad, I'm not sure if the folks working at the front counter were new, but they didn't seem to know what was going on and when I asked questions they appeared to be annoyed. The eye appointment itself felt rushed and there wasn't a lot of communication regarding what would be taking place (e.g. a puff of air in the eye or bright light flashing in the eye). I haven't been to the eye doctor in a while, but it was assumed that I knew what would be happening without any explanation. Overall I didn't feel very valued as a patient or customer. Eye Q In JP, right on Centre ST. For me, it doesn't get much nicer. I've been elsewhere, to Harv. Sq, to Brookline, and in other countries by necessity. Now I've got this location close to where I live. And it's as friendly, as competent, or more so - than everywhere I've been. Also affordable. Found a great, new coffee shot hidden close by..... Hard to believe the one-star reviewers. O well. Is there a way to rate the reviewers?? Maybe they were referring to the other location. read more

I think the products that Eye Q offer are wonderful. They have a really nice selection of glasses & contacts but their customer service skills are lacking and the atmosphere is sterile at best. I had a great experience with Eye Q. It was my final stop of a day-long search for new glasses and so glad I powered through to this spot. The two sales people working were friendly and helpful with their suggestions. I can be indecisive when shopping and really do not enjoy shopping. After my hemming and hawing one of the salespeople tells me to: "Hold on. I have something in the back you might like." She shortly returns with the perfect pair of glasses. She explained that it was a prototype of a style due to released in Spring 2014. Say what? I get to set the trend?! Oh, hell yeah. But the glasses really are awesome and the store's brand. And because the frames were a prototype, I got them for a ridiculously low price. After my insurance kicked in it was a practically freel. Best of all, because of a promotion, I was given the option of selecting a second pair of frames for FREE. Umm, hell yeah. I couldn't decide what I wanted for my second free pair, so the salesperson made a note in my record that I had a free pair available to me. She told me to come back whenever to select my pair_ no rush. Fast forward nearly two months later. I stroll into Eye Q to ask them to adjust my friend's glasses which Melissa, salesperson, does happily despite my friend having never been a patron of the store. I tell Melissa that I have a free pair of frames to select and while I am perusing the selection, she recommends that I consider a pair of prescription sunglasses. MIND BLOWN. For whatever reason in my five years of glasses wearing, purchasing a pair of prescription sunglasses never dawned on me. It was the best suggestion ever. Melissa then recommended a set of frames that looked great. Lucky me, I was purchasing the pair of glasses after my vision insurance renewed and got the prescription for very little money. So, I ended up with two pairs of complete glasses for less than $100. Seriously, the customer service was stellar. Two great recommendations by two separate sales persons on two separate visits. WORST eye doctor experience by far! Went in the store in JP for contact lenses exam and bought contact lenses afterwards. The front desk people were not friendly. Doctor was ok, eye exam was standard,the doctor ordered contact lenses trail after the test. My insurance did not cover the exam fee so I paid the exam fee and contact lenses trails fee which was $120(which is reasonable for a contact lenses exam). I came in a week later for contact lenses fitting. However the contact lenses they ordered were under prescripted, I couldn't see and everything is blurry. Doctor was not there that day so I scheduled another time to come in. Went in for the third time and finally got a pair of contact lenses that work. Ordered a 90 day lenses(daily) and 1 pair of monthly lenses trail through them my insurance covers $150, used my insurance and paid the excess amount(less than 20) in cash. Paid additional fee for the 90 day supply to ship it to my house and told them I would like to come in to try the monthly lenses trail. Days later, received my 90 day lenses in a well packed box and weeks later received my monthly lenses trail in an TORN ENVELOPE! I made very clear that I would like to come in and try my monthly as I had experience with you guys where contact lenses you guys ordered did not fit! Mail to me? Fine. Can't find a box to mail the lenses? Unacceptable! And 2 Month later received a letter with ADDITIONAL CHARGE of $185 through mail under the name of David. Called in and was told this is fee for eye exam and the$120 I paid was for contact lenses. And David is another name of the clinic. Hello?!! I didn't receive and service from DAVID. The doctor was a FEMALE! And isn't your place named EYE Q? DO NOT recommend going there! read more

I too have the Amazon Local $9 for $200 voucher, but was a touch hesitant to visit Eye Q JP after reading some of the previous reviews. I'm happy to say that my appointment and interaction with the front desk staff and Dr. Cheng was pleasant, informative and very helpful. I didn't catch the name of the person that greeted me, but she was personable and kind, assisted me with multiple pairs of eyeglasses and promptly answered any questions that I had. (I was also offered the additional deal for the discounted second pair.) Dr. Cheng was thorough, listened to my questions carefully and explained each step of the exam. I didn't pull the trigger on the glasses - I needed a second opinion! - but I left happy and satisfied with the experience. Their prices do seem to be on the steep side, but I'm happy to keep the business within our community and I plan to return soon to complete the purchase. Within 5 minutes they had called mt eye doctor, gotten my Rx, given me a trial pair of contacts, and adjusted my friends glasses - all at no charge!! If I lived here I would be back! This really was the smoothest glasses purchasing experience I have ever had. I was immediately helped upon strolling into the shop, prescription in hand. The man who helped me picked out some frames that would suit my prescription, face, and preference, and didn't pressure me towards anything in particular. The designs are great. I wound up settling on a set I loved from the start. I've never instantly found a set I genuinely love. Normally it's more like "eh, good enough...I guess..." In picking out the lens options, he offered me glass with middle-of-the-road refractive index. Also pointed out the high refractive index glass which would have been much more expensive, but I was not pressured to select that. Glasses purchased with the help of an amazon local deal 20 minutes after walking into the store = awesome. Two days later, I got a phone call saying my glasses were ready. They look, feel, and work great. Great place. Support your local business - if they have their act together like this place, you'll do much better than at a big chain. read more

Eye Q is fabulous across the board -- from service to style, price to personality! As other reviewers have noted, past eyeglass shopping experiences for me were less than fun and definitely not glamorous -- so much so that I had been glasses-less for 8 months (wearing contacts all the time) before stumbling into this treasure chest a few weeks ago. Richard greeted me enthusiastically and provided the perfect amount of help -- not at all pushy, clearly not working for commission (unlike some other places I've shopped), definitely concerned with making me look and feel good in my new specs. He was available when I needed him to be, and let me be when I needed "alone time" to compulsively try the same 3 pairs on over and over and over (and over). He challenged me to try the pair that is now my very favorite pair of glasses ever - a pair a little funkier than I would have chosen on my own. He definitely had an eye for what works with my face shape and quickly "got" my likes and dislikes, so we didn't have to waste time going over lots of glasses that didn't work. He made the experience fun, and I actually trusted his opinion, so I bought my glasses (2 pairs!) during my first visit, without friends or family to confirm these looked good. I've gotten tons of compliments ever since. Eye Q has a flexible exchange policy, too, Richard told me, so you can try a pair out and return them within 30 days, no questions asked. They have a great selection - very stylish and contained; rather than a sprawling mall store of thousands of frames, these guys have put time and effort into hand-picking great-looking frames. I loved the selection so much that I bought two pairs -- and that only because Richard cut me a sweet deal. Who would have known that buying glasses I love at a hip boutique could be as reasonable as buying glasses I'm lukewarm about at For Eyes or any of the other big box vendors? I brought a pair of glasses where the frame of one glass literally separated and the lense fell out while I was wearing them. I had purchased them at the JP store in 2011. In 2013 I came back because I had a new prescription and wanted the new lenses put in my $500 frames. Four months ago the frame separated. On close inspection it looked like the new lenses were slightly larger and or shaped differently than the old lenses. I tried gluing them. It would work for awhile. Finally I decided to take them back and get help. I have worn glasses since the 7th grade and never has then happened to a frame. Never the less I was told by the staff that frames get older and more brittle over time and that they would not be able to put lenses in a frame if they were not fitted for them. Frames are heated all the time to adjust them to your nose and eyes. These frames were stressed and snapped 2 years later. I got very little sympathy from the staff and no help at all. A shame as I have spent over$1,300 there and will no longer do business with them again. read more
