Went in with high expectations and came out wholly satisfied and with mad respect for Paul. He recommended many different styles and was very responsive to my needs. Heck, he even fixed the arms on my old one in the time it took me to look around at a few pairs because I complained about it being too tight. Great value too considering no insurance was involved. Five stars! My designer sunglasses- the hinge was broken and hanging on by a thread. Owner knew what to do right away- fixed them quickly, made them feel more secure and even gave me a new case because the one i had was not suitable for the shades. I stopped by on my birthday, and Paul took so much time to find the perfect pair of glasses for my personality and face shape. I ended up getting a gorgeous pair of round glasses. Out of the four eyewear places I looked at, Paul/Spectacle, was the only responsive and proactive candidate--and this was on the initial phone call. When I got to the shop, he helped me find an ideal frames (the ones I had, were discontinued). Three days ago, I picked up my glasses, and he adjusted the fit perfectly. Great local business in Boston for us four-eyed folks. I normally wear contact lenses but like to keep a pair of glasses at the ready for nighttime wear or on days where I can't be bothered to pop those lenses into my eyeballs. My Warby's were showing signs of advance age so on a recommendation from a friend, I visited Spectacle to browse their selection. This boutique shop specializes in non-brand but still fashionable frames in a wide array of styles from the safe and conservative to the truly out there and eclectic. The owner, Paul was goodnatured and very friendly but not pushy at all. He gave me some of his recommendations at the onset but mostly let me browse and try on frames at my leisure. I ended up going with a nice silver matte pair that is so weightless it's amazing. Total cost was $249. Not bad at all considering you pay more than twice that for designer frames. Yes, they're a bit pricier than Warby but I feel the quality was better and plus, I like to support a non-chain small biz. Turnaround time was only a week so no complaints on the wait time for my new specs. They offer complimentary adjustments so that's a nice touch especially since I'm local and can get back easily. I'd definitely recommend anyone who is in the market for new glasses to check this place out. They're not open on Sundays or Mondays so keep that in mind. read more

Paul is the best. After years of not having a pair of up-to-date specs due to lack of inspiration and option overload, I am happy to say I can finally see. When I would complain about not having a new pair of glasses, all of my friends would encourage me to visit trendy chains they all loved (SEE, Warby Parker...), and after a few unsuccessful trips, I gave up. I'm just not that target audience member. Because when it comes to glasses, I want 3 things: 1) They must be affordable (I'm as blind as a bat and these shops overcharge you to death on thinning the lenses) 2) I want a pair no one else has. 3) I need to support a local business (no name brands, nothing made in China on the web, nothing that's a chain). Spectacle fulfills all of those needs and then some. Not only is Paul the nicest shop owner in the South End, but he is like having a personal glasses shopper. His mission is to find a pair of glasses that looks good on your face. Period. He guides you through the entire process, and provides endless pairs to try on for your new purchase. After 2 visits (I'm picky, I swear) I finally found a pair that I simply adore. They were SO affordable compared to every other store I visited and he even goes as far as to tell you to keep them for a month and if you don't like them bring them back! He knows what he's doing. Everything is fine while you are shopping for glasses. When you pick up your glasses and something is wrong...you'll see who you are dealing with. The owner is greedy, and again, you'll see that afterward. When first time shopping for glasses, the owner was super funny and polite, he would open the door for his customers. While looking for frames, there was a lady there that came in as after purchasing her glasses, after few days something had to be fixed. It as her 2nd or 3rd time that she had to come back, her face was showing dissatisfaction. I wish I took that as a warning side for whats to come. I wore the same type of wire rimmed glasses, in slightly different iterations, for the last 20 years. For the last ten years, I have been trying to break out of the mold, but hadn't found a pair of glasses that I liked enough to switch. This time around I was determined to switch my style. I went to the shop where my eye doctor is. I found a really nice pair of wire rims, but I held my ground and did not get them. I went to all of the major chains, and couldn't find anything to fit my smallish face. Finally I ended up at Paul Fox's optical shop in the South End. Paul was a co-owner of Eye-Q Optical has started a new optical shop at the site of the former Eye-Q South End location. I actually had fun picking out glasses!!! Paul picked out about ten pairs of glasses for me to try on. He took pictures of me in the two I liked best for me to text to my friends and asked if I wanted to take them home for a few days to help me decide. Before I left, he even cleaned and adjusted my old glasses for me. The glasses I picked out are perfect. They are a big departure from the wire rims I typically have worn, but they fit my face and style and I feel completely natural in them. I have gotten many compliments on them. The prices were comparable to elsewhere. The service far surpassed anywhere I have been for glasses before. Update: About a year ago I needed new glasses and visited Spectacle again. Same great experience, quality, and service. I purchased regular glasses and sunglasses. I've received many compliments on both, but the best thing about the glasses is I feel like they really suit me and I feel very comfortable in them. read more

This has to be the best eyewear shop I have ever been to--and that is not an exaggeration. It was not the glasses I walked out with or the fact that they had Sade playing when I came in (maybe a mixture of both). I could make an exhaustive list of why I love it but I'll just point a few things out. 1) They have a wonderful selection. For the first time in my life, I found a simple pair of black thin framed glasses that did not have a D&G or diamonds all over the legs. The glasses are also reasonably priced and they do have great offers. 2) The decor is lovely and I felt very comfortable. The owner was helpful but was not persistent. He was patient, sweet, and honest! 3) I did not have my prescription but he was able to put an order in simply by reading my lenses. They were ready in about 4 days and they fit perfectly. 4) They send you wonderful coupons and a gift card after you visit them. I was waiting around 15 minutes one time during store hours and he was very apologetic (even sent me another coupon in the mail)! I would absolutely recommend Spectacle. Although I liked his new collection I preferred to have something similar to my older pair so he could get me an exact same pair AND offered to repair my old pair so now I have a backup of my favorite frame. Paul is awesome. So friendly and so helpful! I had a fantastic experience at Spectacle. I bought the Living Social deal here back in late January and when I realized it was going to expire I decided to cash it in. I called to make an appointment but was told to just drop in if I didn't need an exam. When I went in Paul greeted me right away. He was finishing up with another customer but took a long look at me and handed me two sets of frames to try on while I waited. Both were fantastic! The other customer told him to help me so Paul grabbed a few more pairs and he and the other customer weighed in. I started with 6 pairs of frames and liked all of them! I was shopping alone and was going to send pics to a friend for her to weigh in. Paul called out to me not to take selfies, he would take the pics for me! This lead to a mini-photo shoot. Paul said he did this all the time and people often used his pics for their profile pic on facebook (spoiler alert! I did! And not even the pic of the glasses I chose!) I sent the pics to my friend and Paul chatted with me while we waited for her response. A few minutes later my friends had reached a consensus and when I tried that pair on, Paul and I agreed they were right. This whole experience was awesome! The deal made the glasses affordable since as a grad student I do not have vision insurance. Paul is hilarious and so knowledgeable about glasses and frames. Spectacle has so many frames and I was happy to not have to pick any out myself! To top it all off, after I paid for the glasses, Paul adjusted and cleaned the $10 sunglasses I wore in! My glasses came in a week later and I had another pleasant visit with Paul. I love my new glasses! As long as I am in Boston, this is the only place I will come for glasses! read more
