They purposefully rejected Humana insurance (administered by EyeMed) for my minor daughter despite the fact they knew they accepted Eyemed. They did this for their own greed and when I spoke with the owner, Mary Keenan, she confirmed their mishandling and offered to rectify the situation by returning the glasses for a refund. We don't have vision insurance anymore so I explained that I need them to resubmit the claim....that a refund isn't what I need. She refused and became nasty and hostile. I asked her not to contact my daughter, but 10 minutes later she texted my daughter asking to return her glasses. read more

SHADY SHADY. the whole situation is was shady, went in to get an eye check up, did all paperwork online before I went in. lady slides over a clipboard with a laminated paper over and says sign here, so me thinking I missed a signature form online, Dr. Grace was very nice BTW. during a test I said hmm had many of eye test no one ever did this test before strange. he didn't reply..at check out the lady said $45, I told her my insurance covered co pay, she said no its what you signed for. as a professional she should have explained that is was a test or read this carefully then sign, she said she didn't have to say that, I could read.. I mention it to the other lady that kept popping in and out. she says well you signed it, I'm sorry you don't know how to read. I went in for a routine eye exam. The physician was great. Very nice and thorough. The staff out front were outstanding. Not at all pushy and they were very helpful in talking about nuances to the transition in progressives that may be causing my issues. The gentleman (don't know his name) noticed the glasses i had on were very loose ( they have been for a while) and adjusted them just to be helpful. Paper prescription they gave me didn't even have the right address for me on there. I went in for an eye Exam and the sales people had me picking out glasses before the appointment had even happened. None of the frames had prices on them and staff was not upfront about any costs. At checkout I was clearly uncomfortable with the price and asking questions about less expensive frames, and they continued to insist. I wasn't given a copy of my prescription and was made to feel that the only way I would get my prescription is by purchasing glasses. When I tried to cancel the order, I was given the run around and they refused to give me a full refund despite no return policy being outlined anywhere. Horrible experience and exuberantly overpriced. I was able to get both my prescriptions with frames for less then they were charging me a pair of lenses. read more

I am new to Boston and I will definitely be coming back here for my next eye exam. I made my appointment online through zoc doc after a friend recommended the office. The appointment process online was super easy. Zoc doc has easy to use forms that you can fill out online so that you don't have to wait once you go in. I checked in on time and the doctor was able to see me immediately. The exam area was extremely clean, neat and well kept. I opted to take the eye photo even though it was not covered by my insurance. At check in, they clearly explained that this would not be covered and an incremental $35, but I wouldn't need to have my eyes dilated. I really appreciate that they explain this upfront to avoid any confusion later on. The woman who performed the initial tests was great. After those tests, I saw Dr. Yip. She was extremely professional, thoughtful and friendly. I felt like she really spent the time to explain to me what was going on with me eyes and was genuinely interested in finding the right contacts for me - not just trying to push one brand. They helped me in a pinch when I needed glasses in a day about a year ago. Then, my glasses broke and they were able to get me a replacement frame under warranty for free and had it shipped to me. I've worn glasses my entire life and been through 4-5 eye doctors and have bought several pairs of glasses at different establishments. Here is what's good about going South End Eye: They have a great variety of eye wear and all of it is really good, even in the lower price range. So even if you don't spend a fortune you wont look like you picked up some glasses at CVS. No matter how much you spend, or how many times you go there to be extremely picky, you are treated like you're spending a millions bucks! Not all places are like that. I was not pushed in one direction or another (in fact the pair that we agreed on was not in the high end) by the very knowledgeable staff. It is extremely clean and contemporary inside and very inviting to come in and try on a thousand pairs of glasses. I highly recommend it if you're looking for eye wear or sunglasses. read more

Again, Dr. Martin never disappoints. She's hands down the best optometrist in Boston! Apparently I have super sensitive eyes... I've been having infections or something on and off for a few months, so I caved in for a visit Dr. Martin again. Turns out, my cornea got scratched! Dr. Martin came to the rescue and took care of it for me -- luckily, no scarring, and it healed after a few weeks of drops! She really cares for her patients and isn't focusing on making money (ie, getting you to purchase glasses at South End Eye, prescribing generics, etc). She also gave me a ton of eyedrops and free trial lenses. She's personable, efficient, and really easy to work with... I guarantee that Dr. Martin will take great care of you :) I also really like their online booking system and their text reminders. read more

I visited here for a checkup to make sure my prescription was correct, and also because I needed new glasses and contacts. The eye doctor (I think it was Dr. Laura) was great! She made sure my contacts fit correctly and also recommended some eye drops for an allergy I had. Since no previous Doctors had diagnosed an eye allergy, even though I have consistenly reported similar symptoms, this made me really, really happy! Thanks SEE! They also have a really nice selection of glasses and they helped me pick out something that was in style and also functional. I love my new glasses! The one thing was that their contact prices are a bit high. I found the same exact contacts--a 90-day supply--at a price that was $50 less ($180 vs. $130--incl a $10 discount) at 1800contacts. I really, really, really wanted to purchase my contacts from SEE because they were so great, have great service, are friendly, and I like to support local businesses, but $50 is not an insignificant amount to me, and my FSA was running low. So it was too hard to justify....if their prices were just a little bit closer I probably would have gone with them. Boooo. I felt guilty going with a competitor. Maybe I will double check SEE"s prices the next time I need a contact refill. If they go down, I will order through them instead. But believe me, the people at SEE are GREAT! I went here for my annual eye exam. I have had lasix, so I can't speak for glasses selection. They seemed to have a lot of cool ones, but I had no need. I did overhear someone paying $500 for just the frames which seems a bit pricey to me, but I'm sure it was just the brand he selected. The staff was super friendly, and I had an enjoyable eye exam, if you could ever say that, while I was there. I also just really appreciated the fact that I could make this appointment online while I randomly thought about it at work. I loved the program they used. What service should be! My partner and I stopped into this shop right after it opened in the neighborhood to check it out. The selection was great and the ladies were very engaging. They gave us a tour of the location including the doc's office, which is downstairs from the retail store. Although we didn't see any frames we were dying for, they told us that if we ever saw something they didn't carry but we liked they'd be more than happy to order it in for us....I just tested their promise. Being time for my check-up I booked an appointment for today and was thrilled. The quality of exam was far greater than any that I've received in Boston. They even tested by current glasses to discover that they were totally messed up from what my Rx should be. (no surprise as the previous shop was less than impressive) After my exam I walked up to the retail side with a yellow post-it that had a model number on it. They not only ordered the glasses that the post-it had on it, but they ordered multiple colors of the frames for me to check out! They also ordered the lenses so that when the frames come in and I pick my favorite, I won't have to wait for lenses! Rock on! I originally only went here because I had a voucher, but was so pleased with the service that I would definitely return. Service was incredibly friendly, accommodating and earnest. One drawback is I don't think they have a huge selection of frames, but the service more than compensated for the lack ... The right glasses are difficult for me to find, because of my odd prescription and Mary was extremely knowledgeable about my issues, as well as sensitive to my needs. It was very clear she was interested in helping me find the "right" pair of frames for my lens, rather than trying to sell me just anything. Who knew I would actually look forward to my annual eye exam? Simply put, this place is a gem. Yesterday I had my third annual exam at South End Eye, and this time came early to pick out my second pair of glasses from them. It was a blast, trying on glasses I'd never select, and feeling pretty hip with four eyes (I just wish I felt the same way in 3rd grade). Today I found out my new, awesome, classy purple (!) glasses were in, and I'm about to order my yearly supply of contact lenses. South End Eye (SEE) is now one of my favorite local businesses in Boston. The owners and doc are professional, pleasant, experienced, stylish, prepared, always happy & smiling, and extremely helpful. I can't say enough about how positive my experience was. I will be demanding that all of my friends and family go to SEE so I recommend you do too. Even if these people don't listen to me, I know SEE will be here to stay and they will do great business. The selection of frames is interesting, broad, and fun to peruse. The brands range from stylish to trendy and are reasonably priced. They also have a great selection of sunglasses. The staff helped me navigate the dozens of frames and gave honest opinions (using words like great, "those don't work on you", boring, cutting edge, sexy, "they work"). It wasn't intimidating in the least and actually quite fun to pick out my new glasses. My new glasses were ready the next day. I couldn't be happier with them. They were one step ahead of everything. Beyond that they treated me like an individual and went above and beyond -- even reopening the doors after I showed up one night. The eye exam was top notch and the doc answered all of my questions honestly. She listened to everything I had to say and did a thorough exam that was easy and comfortable. They also grabbed my insurance info right away and called the provider to double check my coverage -- just so there was no mix up. I've never had an eye doctor give a crap about insurance but SEE dealt with it immediately and happily. And if you're just looking to browse, you'll have a zero-pressure experience, but they'll be available right away if you need anything. A+ across the board. read more
