I don't live in NYC... I am from LA, but I was in town and had an eyeball emergency to deal with. I stumbled into this place and EVERYBODY at Eye Q was so incredibly kind and helpful, I was blown away. As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a huge smile by the sweetest receptionist, who referred me to who I believe she said was her manager and one of the optometrists. He was super helpful and cool. I had to come back in later that day and they both remembered me, and the other optometrist who ended up finishing with me was so so great too. While I waited, I also browsed and tried on a bunch of their eyeglasses selection which was broad, stylish, and had a nice mix of basic and playful/whimsical. I came here for a routine eye appointment with Dr. Phoebe Pan. She is hands down one of the best eye providers I've ever had. I didn't follow instructions and wear my contacts, but they were able to accommodate me anyway. All of the staff here is really nice and helpful. Best optometrist in NYC. Everyone is really caring and kind and they figured out that the reason for my migraines and eye pain was because another optician gave me the wrong prescriptio (?!). In July, 2021, I came to Q for updated lenses in my frames and a new pair of glasses that the manufacturer recommended I use this vendor As of today's date, November 18, 2021, I still have not received the requested glasses for various reasons. I waited but eventually made the mistake of paying in full. I was told the equipment was not able to make my chosen request. (Blue lenses) If I was told initially, I would have gone someplace else. They now refuse to take my calls and refuse to refund my order. The one star is for Dr. Stein who tested my vision twice since they had issues when making lens measurements. I used to love this place. Unfortunately it seems like it hasn't been cleaned since 2018. The sink is covered in mineral build up, the doctors don't disinfect any of the equipment before using it, and the lenses they use for new prescriptions are mostly dirty. This is the opposite of the eye q I once knew. They can also be extremely condescending if you express any concerns. They refused to give me a new prescription because I couldn't see through the dirty lenses, so I bought a bunch of frames and went to a real eye doctor instead. Are you a PhD student?" Is it typical to be asked these questions by your eye doctor as a 31-year-old woman? If this is a conversation, why does it feel like an interrogation? I've been coming to Eye Q for years now with my family. I come here every time I need a fresh set of glasses. Erika is the absolute best! She's got great style and knew exactly what would fit me immediately. To be fully honest, they were busy the last time I came, but they were able to help me in a good amount of time. This is my fifth optometrist visit in NYC, so far they have all been terrible and I have not returned. AND I have decent vision insurance. I have even gone to costco optometry twice even though they do not take my vision insurance because at least then I know I will get a decent exam, glasses/contacts without being OVERCHARGED. That being said, my visit to Eye Q was decent and fair priced hence the four star rating. It was not perfect, but not terrible which is all I ask in looking for a decent optometry practice. Upon arrival, I filled out the usual information questionnaire. There was a wait, which I expected being as my appointment was close to lunch time. I didnt mind the wait, but what I did mind was that none of the pre-testing or calibrating of my glasses were done while I was waiting. Instead it was done while I was seeing the optometrist, Dr. Phillip. Once in the exam room, Dr. Phillip was not happy that I did not bring my current lenses for the contact exam but that was because I was ALL out, as I procastinated finding a new decent optometrist. Luckily, they had my trial lenses in stock and I was able to put them on for the contact lens exam which starts at $60 for a renewal of your prescription to over $100 for a new fitting. At the end, she told me I had a slight astigmatism in my right. I had heard this before, but not enough to correct. She said my vision was slightly worse so I was expecting a different contact lens prescription but instead only the glasses prescription changed. She also said my optic nerve disc was a little larger and asymmetrical than usual which is rare since I had never heard that from an optometrist or ophthalmologist before. Definitely informative and something I will consider. She also said I may not be a lasix candidate as my vision changes slightly- I'll have to see about that. Finally checkout went smoothly. The front desk staff explained my glasses/contacts benefits and I was able to get 6 months worth of contact lenses covered by my insurance ($90 worth). They also had four drawers of frames that were completely covered by davis vision. I didnt see any frames that I wanted, one was ok but none called my attention. Or I could have $150 towards any frames. Since I recently bought a new pair of awesome shape and color glasses I decided to use my benefits for contact lenses. Also I automatically was printed out my prescriptions with my receipt which I appreciated. There is nothing worse than having to argue to get your prescription for an exam you PAID for. Eye Q has a good selection of frames. I ended up going for a pair by Venus (www.venuseyedesign.com). It's a small Canadian company specializing in plastic frames that is starting to catch on - Eye Q had some models on back-order. However: the pricing seems expensive to me, but it might be reasonable to most people. Their hours are not good - they open at 10:00am and not at all on Sundays. They don't take most vision plans (in my case Spectera). Finally, the staff is not helpful, except for one girl, Paulina. read more

Dr. Zlatin changed my life! When I finally had the courage to get lasik, my optometrist told me my vision deteriorated and got too bad for it. At that point, I was so disappointed because my glasses were so thick I would get headaches from wearing them. My contacts irritated my eyes and I couldn't stand them either. After some research, I decided to give orthokeratology a shot. I found Dr. Zlatin on the Ortho K Academy website. He is the only listed "Fellow" (aka expert) in the NYC region. Ortho K is not cheap, but out of desperation I took a risk and now I am very glad I did. When I first reached out to Eye Q with my questions (and I had a lot of questions!), they were always very patient and detail oriented with their answers. When I came in for a consultation with Dr. Zlatin, it was very obvious that he is extremely knowledgable and passionate about what he does. He created these custom molds for me. With ortho k, it takes time for the vision to improve. I read online that it is expected to take 2 weeks for the vision to improve. It took me probably 3 days which is truly impressive. Every visit I've had at Eye Q, I have always been greeted with friendly, attentive staff. From my experience with Dr. Zlatin, he really knows his stuff and he would happily explain things to me. He truly is the best. I recently back moved to Canada and coming back to NYC for an appointment will be difficult due to COVID. I really hope I can find a doctor just as good as him in Toronto for my ortho k needs. read more

I wanted to like this business, as the optometrist and the salesperson who worked with me initially seemed nice and knowledgeable. After seeing the bill for contacts and glasses (after insurance) I was horrified, but as a doctor, I figured I shouldn't nickel and dime my eyes. Unfortunately, my contact lenses still have not been delivered- they said they would check on them and call me today, and they never did. Additionally, I went to pick up my glasses today and they are wrong. My vision is blurry and I have a headache after a few minutes. Their answer was that I have an astigmatism correction-- but the optometrist explicitly told me my prescription hadn't changed, and I have never had astigmatism in the past. As a doctor, this type of issue is a concerning miscommunication at best, and a medical error at worst. I am going to give them the chance to fix the problem (and I am happy to change this review), but otherwise I will be asking for a full refund and considering going to the better business bureau. read more

Today I had my second eye exam and contact lens fitting at Eye Q and I only have good remarks to give. I called earlier today to find out if they had an appointment time to fit my schedule. The lady who answered the phone was very polite and was able to fit me in at a convenient time today. Once I walked in (10 minutes early), I was welcomed and they had me fill out the usual medical history and treatment forms. Dr. Bose saw me right away and the exam was completed in a flash. She was also very professional with exemplary bedside manner. The last time I was here, I saw Dr. Feder who was also great. Caroline assisted me with purchasing my annual supply of contact lenses and gave me information about how to claim my $$$ rebate. I still rate this clinic 5 stars despite the unfortunate fact that they do not accept DavisVision. They made a great impression during my first visit and I tend to return to providers and clinics that I can trust to ensure my eye and health needs are met even if that means paying out of pocket for high quality service. read more

This place really is amazing. Dr. Zlatin is extremely knowledgeable and helpful -- he simplified and resolved a vision issue no one else could (including ophthalmologists). It turned out to be very addressable. His optician Matthew is literally the most professional, personable, and knowledgeable person you'll ever meet in any practice. Customer service was outstanding -- even his willingness to answer 100 neurotic questions. I can't highlight enough the rudeness of the staff, everyone there seems to have an attitude (I don't know when it became prestigious to work in the eye glasses shop). Just called to check why my prescription hasn't been confirmed yet as I made an order for contact lenses with Walgreens. I had a "pleasure" to speak with the "office manager" who totally rebuffed me. I was actually making sure that my prescription was still valid as they made a mistake and screwed up the appointment for the annual check up. She actually interrupted me with words "listen to me" as if I am some kind of a 5 year old. I purchased glasses elsewhere, and after 2 weeks they didn't seem right so I went back to eye Q not knowing what happened. Had a bad feeling from the moment we got to the door. Glass door was locked and my friend was on crutches, rain pouring hard on top of us and the sales woman working there (not the optometrist) saw us standing there getting drenched in the rain and not only did she take her sweet old time getting to the door, she had to first finish her conversation with the person inside before coming up to open the door. No hello, nothing....we even had to remind her that an appointment was made before she let my friend in. Staff and doctor are very welcoming and kind at first but quickly revealed as predatory and dishonest. The doctor spent more time trying to sell me a several thousand dollar eye product I did not ask about than actually looking at my eyes and the product is not even covered by insurance. I requested to be fitted for contacts and the doctor just gave me a brand of contacts, I was not given the option to try different ones and see which felt comfortable as I have in the past at different optometrists offices. Turns out the brand is only sold through the EyeQ office and cannot be purchased online or elsewhere. Clearly trying to force you to spend money with them. When I complained that the contacts were uncomfortable I was completely dismissed. 20 minutes later I had a splitting headache and head to remove them because they were so uncomfortable. They refuse to give you your contact Rx until you have completed their follow up fitting process. Another way to force you to spend money with them. They LIED and told me that my insurance did not cover contact fittings. When I spoke with my insurance company the next day I was informed that I was eligible for a standard contact fitting with copay but EyeQ charged me for a "Premium" fitting and even so my plan should have covered 20%. I did not ask for a premium fitting and I was not informed that that was what I was receiving. Finally, when it came time to pick glasses I asked what the cost would be including frames and lenses and was told upwards of $300. I asked why my insurance was not covering the frames and lenses and only then was I informed that the charges were for lens "upgrades" that were not covered. Again, upgrades I did not ask for and was not informed of until I pressed them. I asked them the cost without upgrades and they said $60. I asked them how much to add a scratch-resistant coating and was informed that they had added on the scratch resist for the $60 so I clarified if my lenses would be free without it and they said yes. Again trying to manipulate me into spending money by quietly adding upgrades without my consent. At that point, I decided to leave because I felt very overwhelmed and uncomfortable with the way the staff was clearly trying to manipulate me and charge me exorbitant amounts of money for things I did not even request or want. When I said that I was not ready to buy glasses today and would just like to get my Rx for my records and come back another time they immediately took an attitude with me. Later, I found that they withheld some of Rx information so I would be unable to purchase elsewhere. And I did not even mention the optometrists harsh and unpleasant attitude during the contact fitting. He actually scolded me for not being able to get the contact in right away (likely because it didn't fit well anyway as I later complained). I felt this was completely inappropriate as well as generally upsetting. Overall an absolutely horrid and expensive experience I will not be going back. And I now have to pay out of pocket for another optometry appointment in order to get my contact Rx since they continue to withhold the information. read more

Come here for mine and my children's eye check ups. The doctors were pretty nice and helpful. Will answer all questions. Especially the Dr that takes Pediatric patients. Their staff and manager is excellent in helping you maximize your insurance benefits, pick out the best pair for your face and just overall make you feel better in a rather stressful decision making process. Hey! I'd be wearing those glasses for at least two years unless I want to pay out of pocket right? Lol Their appointment follow ups aren't annoying as most Dr's and any other practice does too lol. Doctors are fine, but business model is always difficult, they nickel and dime patients after pushing unnecessary tests. Wouldn't extend prescription 3 days to accommodate a contact lenses refill given their "liability." AWFUL!! I went here to get my 9 year old son his first pair of glasses. Three months later he still wouldn't wear them so I went back to Eye q to get a second frame that he preferred. I asked them that since it was only 3 months if they could give me a slight discount on the 2nd pair of glasses and they refused, not evenly politely. Very very unhelpful. I pointed out that this was the first pair of glasses for him, and we were forming a long term relationship with their business and they couldn't care less. They accepted my Guardian insurance, which I appreciate. Upon arrival for my appointment I was greeted in a haphazard manner by an older man and younger boy/man, who both didn't seem to care that much, and kind of wandered away from me after the initial hello. I had to wait as they were "dealing with a medical walk in", but when my doctor came out to get me it was a different doctor than the woman who had been helping the person with the medical problem. The eye check itself was just fine, even if my vision is not. When I came back to the front of the store I was told that my insurance would cover $120 glasses, but that not a single pair of glasses in the store fell into that price range. I just picked up my new pair of trendy eyeglasses from this place and I'm happy with them considering I won't probably ever wear them outside of my apartment. The MD is good there, just get your contacts prescription and order at 1800 contacts, as I saved 90 bucks that way. The plus about this store and why I will return is that it's small and the staff was helpful to me. Plus they don't have the expensive glasses all locked up and in the cases that they do, they open them and let you browse. read more

I'm surprised at all of the low reviews for Eye Q- I was very pleased with my visit. I have had trouble with contacts in the past, and my other doctors shrugged it off as either my eyes "weren't made" for contacts, or that I wasn't putting them in correctly. So I've pretty much had to deal with living a blurry life when I didn't want to wear my glasses. The doctor here was extremely helpful. In addition to the usual checkup she did a few tests that determined I had very sensitive eyes and found a daily lens that would be best suited for me. She also gave me a supply to last a week to see if they would be comfortable before ordering the full amount. I can't believe it- I can see! Her recommendation is perfect and comfortable and I am thrilled that they didn't just try and tell me I'd have to wear glasses for the rest of my life! I really like this place. I used to go to Cohen's optical vision on broadway and like 74th street and felt like i was always being scammed by them, with their bs "contact insurance plan". So I finally said "Funk This Yo" and went to a place that accepted VSP and found these guys. When they performed the eye tests, I was just impressed with their technology and my doctor was great. The staff there was also helpful as well. They helped me find frames that suited my face but at the same time, didnt try to push for something that was not my style (like the Ms. Peacock frames from Clue). read more

I won't go back again. Its hard to be mad at the staff because they can be so nice when you go into the store but they are very unorganized. I have been waiting over two weeks for my contact lenses to arrive in the mail, although not their fault, there is no follow up either. There have been several incidents over the last few months incorrectly scheduled appointments, no return phone calls and now this with the lenses. When I complained they said they were having personnel issues ,I understand but don't make your problem my problem. I was in a few days ago to pick up my glasses and decided to glance at the other frames available for an extra pair of glasses. My insurance doesn't kick back in for a few more weeks so I'd have to wait until then to purchase, but Celeste helped me look at tons of fun frames and never rushed me at all. I've been here several times and thought it was a bit pricey, but said okay. I needed a checkup and glasses, so I received them. I lost my glasses and had to get new ones, which was literally 1k. Mmkay. I thought. The original glasses were $600, but $1k. I thought that was odd. My next visit, I said that I wanted to get contacts. I spoke with someone on the phone the day before and they shared with me that my one-year was not up yet to get my eyes checked again and that I would pay out of pocket. I said, fine, because I already had the $1k glasses. I wanted contacts. The lady I spoke with said, it's going to cost $140. I said okay and shared I had a stigmatism. She said, oh, that is at $190. I said okay, see you tomorrow. I show the next day and the manager tells the representative what to tell me, in the room, right next to the waiting area. She comes out and calmly explains that since I am getting contacts, I would need to get a comprehensive exam also. I ask some clarifying questions. I already have glasses, I don't need a comprehensive exam since I cannot get one until May. She said that it did not matter, it's the store policy to get the comprehensive exam too. My second clarifying question, - if it would cost me to have the comprehensive and contact exam. She said yes. I would pay for both. So, the $190 and the $140 for the comprehensive. That was when I turned completely off with the company. The sad part is that if that was explained the day before, I would have been fine, but it was not, which makes me think this place is operating under predatory conditions. I canceled the appointment, retrieved my glasses and they lost a customer for life. Plus, as someone that doesn't write reviews, this prompted me to. Which is interesting, now that I read some of the reviews. I should have done this first. read more

I wish I never walked into this place. I tried to get bifocals. Fast talking Matthew got me to buy glasses that cost over $1000. Weeks later, I get the glasses and reading part was fine, but the distance part was blurry. He said wear them for a while and I should get used to them. Well, I didn't get anything but blurred vision and headaches. I went back and in a few minutes it was determined that they screwed up. They neglected to make lenses based on where my eyes were on the frames -- one of the most basic measurements you expect a half decent optician to make. So they said they'd remake the lenses. Weeks go by, and I pick up the lenses. The distance part was okay (not great), and the reading part was horrible and useless. At this point, I asked for a refund. Do you think I got it? read more

Even though Eye Q is closer to where I live, I originally went to an optometrist near my work. It was a horrible experience. But we started going to Eye Q for the children and found them to be friendly, courteous, and professional. I've started going here myself now and find them to be excellent--the whole team.
