I recently received a letter from the New York Department of Motor Vehicles that I needed to renew my drivers license. I was also informed that I'd need a vision test. I could go to a DMV or go to a licensed optician that's listed on the DMV's website. To my delight, Leonard Opticians was listed as a licensed provider so I made an appointment, discovered the price was very reasonable ($35) and met Ana Amarante, who not only gave me a wonderful eye exam but helped me process my vision test on the internet, saving me the time and agravation of making an appointment and sitting at a motor vehicle office for hours! I have an old pair of glasses whose frame life I am trying to extend. I surely thought it was all over when the one lens kept falling out, no matter how many times I put it in. I guess I underestimated Ms. Ana Amarante,at the Upper East Side location, who quickly realized that the problem was fixable. A screw needed to be replaced and with her usual expertise, she not only took care of the screw but also did other things to enhance the glasses. It's always easy to do a review when you really like a business. I'm here to say this Optician business is super easy to like. First don't let the door buzzer deter you. I saw the employee was busy with a customer so I hesitated looking in the door until he saw me. He immediately buzzed me inside. He was finished with her right at that time. He smiled greeting me which immediately put me at ease. I needed new nose guards for my glasses. I asked if there was a charge. He said "no" and he'd be glad to take care of that. In a few minutes he returned with my glasses as good as new. He even cleaned them for me. I was so glad he gave me his card. He said if I ever need anything else they're glad to help. After all the available discount options for glasses, the prices at Leonard's seem high. That said, the quality and design selection of the glasses are very high quality and the frames they have cannot be found cheaper. And what i find most outstanding about Leonard's is the service provided. Each one of the staff and notably their manager Anna, is highly professional and knowledgeable. She is familiar with every visual challenge and will make sure you get exactly what you need. So if you're looking for either high quality frames, which last for years, terrific styles, or need anything more complicated than simple reading glasses, I can't recommend Leonard's more highly. read more

Wandered in off the street, lured in by the Siren's call of the cutesy front door. Whilst upstate, I needed an emergency repair to my eyeglasses which resulted in a super-floppy temple, causing them to fly off my face if I looked down by 3°. Brought them to my OG optician's here on the UES (they shall remain nameless--for now) who botched the repair even moreso. So there I was, entranced by the front door. Walked in, explained my plight, and my glasses were immediately whisked away to their subterranean lab. Five minutes later, no, really, five minutes later, they were back in my grateful hands, good as new. And with NO CHARGE to boot. Although it did come with an only-in-NYC admonition: "You know, you're playing with fire having only one pair of glasses." I took that not as snark, but as a well-crafted marketing campaign. I started using Leonard Opticians many years ago when Art Leonard was at the helm. My ophthalmologist had recommended Leonard as an optician because of my eye problems. Late last year, I fell and badly bent the titanium frames and badly scratched one of the lenses. When I brought in the glasses, the optician, whose name is easy for a New Yorker to remember, Walt Frazier, was able to bend the titanium frames back to normal and was able to somehow grind away the scratch, warning me that the strain on the titanium might eventually lead to a break. Meanwhile, he saved me from having to buy a new pair of glasses. Today, the titanium frame finally succumbed. I brought the glasses to Leonard this morning, and thanks to his being able to find a replacement frame, I just picked up the glasses with the new frames. read more

This is the optical store to come to for complex needs in eyeware. I developed double vision several years ago, and obtained glasses here on the recommendation of my ophthalmologist at Manhattan Eye & Ear. Leonard's has helped me as my vision has changed, from specialized paste-on prisms, to complex ground-in prisms (with bifocals, with a slightly different diagnosis). These are complex lenses that routine optical stores can't manage at all (I checked a popular chain: "we don't do those"). Amazing customer service! Came in off the street with a pair of my own glasses (not purchased at Leonard) which needed new nose pads. The store was quiet on a Thursday morning and the saleswoman graciously offered to replace the pads while we waited. Five minutes later, a new pair of nose pads on the old frames and I was on my way. No fuss, no muss...wishing the Starbucks line worked as efficiently. I have been a client of Leonard for over 20 years, but NO more! Yesterday I went to have new glasses made, and it used to be that I would leave a deposit. When the glasses were done I would pay the remainder of the bill. This how I did business with them for over 20 years. However, yesterday they told me that I had to pay the entire amount of my glasses up front. I can not and will not do business like that--this not totally ridiculous and unacceptable. I have nought lenses and frames from Leonard Opticians for years, and believe that they do an excellent job of preparing eye glasses. However, they are not inexpensive. In the past, when picking up new glasses which easily cost nearly $1,000, for just lenses not counting the frames, I have always received gratis a box of Kim Wipes and eye glass cleaning solution. Today, when I picked up new glasses ($945) I was informed that it is now "company policy" not to provide Kim Wipes or cleaning solution any longer. If that is really company policy it is very short sighted. A minor irritant, but an irritant no less. There are other high end opticians from which to purchase glasses. read more

I took my 14month old son here for his first pair of glasses after being highly recommended to us by his eye doctor at Cornell. I have twins so it was a bit of a trying day for me. The entire staff was friendly (especially with the kids) and took extra time near closing to get my order placed ASAP. They rushed my order and were able to get the glasses to me in 2days (it was an urgent need as told by the doctor.) About a week after our son had his new glasses we received a phone call and they told us they had not been happy having to rush them and had produced new lenses for us and if we could come back they would like to switch them for the new lenses free of charge! My husband had recently had lenses done somewhere else and was not happy so we dropped off both pairs and they were able to have them both ready at the same time so I could pick them up in one trip instead of two. After all of that we received a hand written thank you card from the staff. These people are incredible, they made this transition so easy for me, I don't have glasses and feel confident I have provided my little guy with the absolute BEST product possible.
