I've been seeing Dr. Hamkiotes pretty much all my adult life. A friend recommended her to me after I had a bad experience with a bargain-basement eye doctor who tried to push Lasik on me... I am very near-sighted and have a pretty rocky family history with eye health, so who I see is particularly important to me. Dr Hamakiotes is: + Knowledgeable and passionate, always aware of the latest developments and options. + Patient and patient-focused. I never leave feeling like I didn't get to ask every question I have. + Responsive in emergencies. I only see her annually, but when I had an issue several years ago on the weekend, was able to reach her for information and reassurance. + An explainer. For me, this is a key attribute in any doctor. I'll never know half of what they know, but I want them to educate me as much as they can in the time we have together. Dr H is forthcoming with helpful explanations of anything I want to understand. She shows me the imaging, explains what numbers mean. + Organized. My "chart" and all records have been well maintained over the years, likely no small feat given all the changes in software, imaging technology, etc. When I sit in the chair, I am confident that my full history is at her fingertips. + Clearly great to work with, as I believe she has had the same office manager for at least 15 years. On top of all that, the office is incredibly well managed by April. I don't recall ever spending time in the waiting room. When I have needed lenses ordered, shipped to different addresses, etc., she is always right on top of it. Recently, they've invested in an automated messaging system that makes planning your visit even easier. Cannot recommend highly enough. read more

I wanted to write about my experience in Dr. Hamakiotes office. I had heard of her service with other patients, but until you personally visit her office you do not know how true her reviews have been. I have never in my 58 years of life had an eye exam as thorough as with Dr. Hamakiotes. She is very personal and knowledgeable of her craft. The technology that she uses to examine your eye is top of the line. She takes time to examine and explain what she sees in your eyes. She also offers preventive advice for the health of your eyes and eyesight. I felt very comfortable and not intimidated. I look forward to my visit again next year! In 2000 I had a cornea transplant and Dr. Hamakiotis was assisting my physician. Seventeen years later, she's still my eye care physician. There is no alternative. She's the best! Needless to say, my eyesight is extremely important to me. As a part-time photographer, there are no words to express their importance. At no time prior to my surgery did I ever receive the thorough care that Dr. Hamakiotis provides. She offers the most thorough and comprehensive eye exams I've ever had. Absolutely the best optometrist I have seen in the city. I had an eye injury in college so I have seen nearly 20 different eye doctors in the past few years and I feel safe saying Dr. Hamakiotes is the best I have found in Manhattan. She is incredibly thorough, explains everything clearly, and will go out of her way to help you. The only downside is that the secret is out and she already has a quite a few clients. So if you want to schedule a first time appointment you should plan to do it in advance. After that if you need something urgent you can count on her to be there for you. I've never had problems scheduling. Her staff is ridiculously nice and helpful, her office is gorgeous, and the equipment is all brand new. Definitely a 5 star doctor. read more

My appointment started right on time and Dr. Poplyansky was very pleasant, professional and kind. I'm a little nervous at any doctors appointment and she was understanding of that. She is very thorough, explains the science behind her recommendations, and lays out all the pros and cons if there are multiple options. Her office is great, though routine appointments sometimes need a few weeks of lead time. She'll make time if it's urgent, though -- a few weeks ago I had a concussion and got a same-day appointment; another time had a big problem with new lenses and was scheduled for the next day. Could not be happier with Dr Hamakiotes. Her and her staff are great. She takes the time to explain what she's doing and how it all works. She doesn't treat you like an idiot and she shows that she really wants to get you the best vision possible. Having a condition known a Keratoconus, getting good help has been more then a challenge. I have very complicated vision issues with both double vision, macular degeneration and until recently, a cataract. The resulting issues made prescribing a prescription for eyeglass lenses difficult as it took a number of exams as my vision adjusted to the medically required treatment. I was referred to Dr. Hamakiotes by both my macular degeneration retina doctor and well as by my cataract doctor. She did a very comprehensive exam and advised me that I might need to return as my eyes adjusted to the treatment I was receiving. Although I needed to return 3 times until the cataract healed post-treatment and the macular degeneration stabilized after requiring new treatment, Dr. Hamakiotes persisted making needed changes, and without additional charge. I no longer have double vision, can read the lock I use at the gym, can read a book or a magazine without super-powered light. I am a happy camper, and considering that another optometrist previously gave up on me, I heartily endorse Dr. Hamakiotes. read more

Dr. H is a fantastic physician. She is incredibly knowledgable about diseases of the eye (I have Keratoconus) and simply the most thorough physician I have ever seen, in any specialty. A visit with her brings you back to a time before insurance companies took over the practice of medicine and doctors could spend time with their patients, examine them properly and talk to them. It is a breath of fresh air. Before starting with her I couldn't tolerate contact lenses and suffered through poor vision. She found the perfect lenses for me and now I feel like a "normal" person again. She is another caliber. I can't say enough good things about her. read more

I was diagnosed with keratoconus 39 years ago. I have seen many opthamologists and optometrists who are considered top of the field from a major opthamologist at Mt Sinai to lead opthamologists at SUNY Optometric to the inventor of the Bausch & Lomb contact lens. I have travelled out of state in search of a quality doctor. Nobody can touch Dr. Hamakiotes. My exam in her office was, by far, the most impressive and comprehensive exam I have ever had. She has an amazing ability to synthesize her medical expertise with common sense to find resolution in ways that others don't. She identified an issue that was contributing to my eye problems which nobody ever tested for. And for the first time in 39 years, I see clearly with relative simplicity when others said, it wasnt possible. She is a perfectionist when it comes to her patient's eyesight, and she has a very pleasant, unassuming and humble style. Its a no brainer. Worth the wait. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Hamakiotes for a few years now as she was recommended to me by my prior ophthalmologist. At the time, my gas permeable contacts were so ill-fitted causing a depression on the lens of my eye and that has since been remedied through her care. I have never had a more comprehensive, thorough and detailed eye exam and feel so secure with her knowledge and insights where my eye care is concerned. Her exams are about an hour in length and she takes painstaking detail to secure my overall eye health and provides insights regarding diet, cleaning procedures for my lenses and eyes (warm compresses) to maintain my (already weakened) sight. read more

I started seeing eye doctors and wearing glasses when I was two years old. That would be almost 64 years ago. Thus, I believe I am qualified to say that Dr. Hamakiotes is a great doctor. Her eye examinations are the most comprehensive I have ever had. Until moving to NYC five years ago, I only saw ophthalmologists. OK, if you need eye surgery you have to go to an MD surgeon. But my last eye surgery was in 1951 so I am just with and extremely happy with the optometric care I receive from Dr. Hamakiotes. read more

An excellent doctor, explains everything thoroughly. never rushes the patient, does research on cornea disease so she's always up on the latest changes and technology. Modern office and equipment. Tough to get appointments for routine visits, but I've never had an emergency. She does offer to sell eyglasses, contacts and fill perscriptions at her office but when I wanted to save money with my local optician, she was took the time to coordnate my very difficult perscription with the optician and the outside lens manufacturer. read more
