People love quaint neighborhoods, but then are so cheap when it comes to actually patronizing the businesses. After being a loyal customer of Eye Shoppe on 7th for 14yrs, I will no longer be doing business with them. I called and scheduled an eye exam to support the purchase of a specialty pair of sport glasses that could only be purchased online. After completing the exam, the owner refused to provide a key piece of information as part of an eye exam, knowing for well that withholding the information would make the purchase of the glasses impossible. Despite knowing the purpose of my visit in advance, the owner said it was against his policy to provide information that helped out an online purchase. read more

As I get (ahem) older, and a history of issues in my family, I had many questions and they answered honestly with good advice on keeping my eyes healthy. Definitely do your research on frame price before purchasing from here. I mistakenly did not and paid $425 for frames (Oliver Peoples) easily available for $263 online. No no no to this place. I called this business earlier today (because they're in network with the UFT) to find out if they carried a certain frame and double check they accepted my insurance. I was excited when they said yes and yes. I came by after work to buy them, set up an eye exam and get lenses. When I came in, the guy tried to sell me on a bunch of other glasses, telling me the ones I wanted (Garrett Leight) were cheap. I told him I was set on them, but humored him and tried on a bunch of others. When I asked for the total out of pocket costs, he gave me a much higher price than what my insurance company quoted and skirted around the breakdown of costs. When I politely showed him my insurance plan coverage, another guy stepped in (the owner?) and told me I'm only partially covered for either frames OR lenses (not both), and that the eye exam wasn't covered. I read him the insurance paragraph that I included in a photo below and he changed the subject with a snarky comment about public school teachers making a ton of money and saying I probably make $100k (that would be lovely, wouldn't it?) and could afford it anyway. The whole experience was unpleasant -- both people working there were condescending and kept insisting that everyone else's way of doing things was bad, cheap, wrong, whatever. After leaving, I called my insurance company again and they confirmed this business was clearly not honoring the insurance coverage and was going against the contract they signed. Not my issue, but might become yours if you choose to shop here with insurance. I'm bummed, because I was looking forward to buying those glasses, but will be going elsewhere and do not recommend this place. read more

You would never imagine eyeglass shopping (and exams) could be so enjoyable, but they are Eye Shoppe on 7th. I've been a customer of Michael's for six or seven years now. The first few years at the shop, Michael (or Chris) would spend time with me and go through a range of frames they had available -- always making sure I was happy and was in love with my eyeglasses. Today, I'll walk in, get my eyes tested, and Michael will have five or fewer frames for me to try on -- and without a doubt, the one he likes best for me is the one that I love, too. I love Michael's style -- Eyeshoppe carries high-end and also budget-conscious brands that look fantastic -- and as he gets to know you, he understands what you're looking for. For example, I was wearing round tortoiseshell Anne et Valentin frames for about a year, and I wanted to try a new, bolder look. He handed me a light blue pearl squarish frame -- something I would never had picked out from the case -- and when I looked in the mirror, I was shocked. Those were the frames I wanted but never imagined would look good on me! The personalized customer service, the fair prices (you pay for excellent customer service, attention to detail and chic, quality frames) are what bring me back every time I need a new pair of glasses. I went to Park Slope Eye first, and they made me sit and wait 10 minutes to talk to someone, even though the 1 person able to help me was giving some woman advice on which frames to choose. I finally got her to quote me on a price and it was upwards of $300! Outrageous. Next stop was Eye Shoppe on 7th. Not only were these people nice and eager to help, they gave me the same (nay, better!) service as Park Slope Eye for 1/2 the price. No bullshit. Plus, I took them in on a Saturday and they were ready by Monday evening. Great place, great service, nice people. They deserve your business! read more

Michael, owner of Eye Shoppe on Seventh, is a consummate professional and also a bit of an artist. Because my favorite frames are no longer made and after many years have become brittle, slightly cracked, and unlikely to survive insertion of yet another set of new lenses, Michael took a new frame nearly the same, conformed it precisely to the shape of the old, crafted lenses, and made this customer one happy person. At other times he's had to tweak the prescription I got from my ophthalmologist because making comfortable progressive lenses isn't just about numbers but also about balance. Michael certainly knows his customers' tastes and needs and works hard to produce a product perfect for each individual. This place is an ongoing headache. Literally. I bought a pair of glasses there and they just don't fit. While I was being sold, they kept telling me, 'don't worry, we'll adjust them'. I should have known better. The first day after I got my frames, the glasses dug into my nose so badly that they broke the skin. When I went back in, the sales guy told me I needed to wash my face with astringent! (?) I had to go back 3 times and every time they have been very unwilling to adjust my glasses. Now, I rarely wear these overpriced ill-fitting glasses because they constantly give me headaches. I would go back but I don't want to have to deal with them anymore. A very expensive lesson learned. I have worn glasses since the 2nd grade and have never had such a terrible experience. read more

In addition to being socially maladjusted, I have terrible vision. My glasses are so thick that you can actually see the future through them. Getting stylish specs can be a challenge. Which is why I go to Eye Shoppe On 7th. Just because I'm one diopter away from legally blind doesn't mean I should be forced to wear a pair of nasty looking goggles. These guys know their business. True story: when my wife and I had just moved to the neighborhood, the owner of Eye Shoppe on 7th identified the exact place where her then-current frames were purchased. They weren't bought at some store in the New York Metropolitan area, it was a shop in Pittsburgh. Truly amazing. They've got a wide selection of frames: inexpensive to expensive, conservative to crazy. They'll take as long as you need to find something that suits your level of exhibitionism as well as your pocketbook. Be warned, though; it can be hard to leave with only one pair! read more

I decided to try this eyeglass shop after having a terrible experience with another shop. Michael, the owner,of this shop, was great. He showed me various glasses that he thought would look good on me and fit my prescription. In the first shop I went to it was very impersonal. I was told to open draws and find what I liked with no guidance as to what glasses would work with the prescription I had or what might look good on me. In the Eye Shoppe on 7th I enjoyed the personal service and felt like a valued customer. When I finally decided on a frame I was told I'd be called when the glasses were ready. Unlike the first shop I went to, where I wound calling them, at this shop I was called within four days saying the glasses were ready. There was a slight problem as I purchased transitional lenses and the lens that came weren't. Michael showed me he ordered them and apologized for the mistake. He then sent them back and within a week they were ready. Michael was very professional and observed all COVID-19 protocols unlike the first shop I was in. I am very happy with my new glasses and the service I received. I would highly recommend this store to anyone wishing to purchase new glasses and be treated as a valuable customer. read more

There was an incredible pair of Caroline Abrams frames... She is a French designer and this particular pair was no longer available in Philly. After a quick search on google, I called the Eye Shoppe. Randy answered. I left the name, 'Kendra in black and gold," with him and went back to work. Randy got back immediately, "No they didn't have them in store, but Yes, he could order them from Paris and would be happy to do so." I emailed my prescription over and he suggested a complimentary glass thickness. I went with it. "It should take about two weeks" Randy said. 13 days later Randy called to let me know they were on the way. The next day the frames arrived. From Paris to Brooklyn to Philly... If I could give zero stars, I would. I am 45 years old and have worn glasses since I was 11. I know what frames work for my face. When I went to Eye Shoppe to look at Bevel frames I requested to see the rectangular, semi-cat eye, etc. I was only allowed to see round frames that have always looked terrible on me and still do. When I asked Ken to look at some of the frames that I know work for my face, he flat out refused to take them out of the case. Save your time and go where you can talk to a sales person who a) cares about your opinion and b) has some idea what frames make a person look good, not their most unattractive. Got everything a girl can want in a shopping experience: huge selection and a makeover. If you are into what I would call eclectic modern and colorful Euro or Asian style frames - this is the best store in New York. I looked far and wide (hip places in the LES / SoHo / Chelsea) - and on a whim I came here and was pleasantly surprised by the selection and prices. Yes the frames can be pricey - but not as pricey as other independent dealers. I have a hard to fit broad face and high bridge until I came here. So what did I get? A great pair of Bevels (a New York brand - Big Slick 8587) a retro metal titanium in a cool taupe with a zing of royal blue on the inside. Why do I think it's a deal? They charge less for the exact same lenses you get at other opticians (380 vs 520). They get 5 stars from me. read more

The owner of this shoppe, Michael, is one of the larger a-holes I have ever had the displeasure of spending money with--if I had known better I would not have dropped $500 on a pair of new glasses (my first pair ever.) As a newby eyeglass wearer it was all about the sale--not making me feel comfortable, or like I was a valued new customer who might want to come back and get another pair sometime. Nope. Just take the money and act like a jerk. Now, a year later, I go back, not to buy glasses, heaven forbid, but for a simple measurement. "Nope. Can't do. We don't do it. Oh, you're a prior customer? Let me look up your card. Oh yes, we have the measurement here, but I'm not going to write it down since you aren't paying for a prescription." True story. These folks need to learn something about customer service, though having been in the Slope almost as long as I have, I guess they figure they can cruise on longevity and discourtesy. read more

These guys are great. I knew I wanted some unique frames, and not the standard brands I saw everywhere, so I went in and bought a pair of Mykitas. They were so patient and helpful, especially Ritchie who sat with me talking through all the options and pulling almost every frame out so I could try it, making me feel at home. This is a neighborhood place.. not a chain. And people like Richie give it the kind of personal touch that turns it from just another store into part of your neighborhood. I had an issue with my lenses 3 months later, and without hesitation when I brought them in Richie took them and fixed them for me without charging me a dime. The frames here are absolutely amazing. However, this shop has no idea what they're doing. I bought two pairs of glasses, and have had to get both fixed elsewhere. Designer frames are expensive. I get that. But if I'm going to shell out $500+ for a pair of glasses (and actually I paid about $1000+ for two frames), I expect them to WORK. In one frame, they reversed the prescription so the lens for the right eye was on the left side, and vice versa. When I couldn't see anything, I was told I "just needed time to get used to the new prescription." What a joke. I took the glasses to a different optometrist, who was able to identify the problem in under two minutes. He also found a major flaw with the second pair of glasses I bought from the Eye Shoppe: they made the lenses too big, completely distorting the frames so that they curve outward in a semi-circle instead of laying flat on my face. I looked like Cyclops from X-men, and not in a hot muscly way. When I told the Eye Shoppe, they offered a refund on the reversed prescription, but refused to admit that they had distorted the other frames (I even have a picture to prove it). I took the refund and got the lenses filled with the other optometrist. I lost $500 on the other frames, which are now completely unwearable. Don't go here unless you plan to try on frames and buy them elsewhere-- what kind of glasses shop doesn't even check if the prescription has been put in the right eye??! read more

News Flash! Warby Parker isn't killing your eyeglass business, you're doing that all on your own. I've never worn glasses more than an hour a day until recently, when my contact lenses started giving me problems. I had an old pair of Warby Parker glasses that were cheap and functional for the hour before bedtime that I wore them. But, since I found myself wearing glasses much more frequently, it was time to upgrade. My old pair of glasses needed to be refit so I could continue wearing them until my new eye insurance kicked in. I thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to test out an eyeglass shop and see if their service and fit were good, and to take a look at new frames. If everything worked out, I would return to purchase a new pair of glasses in a few weeks. Turns out that this was a great I idea; I found my answer immediately. I took my Warby Parker glasses into the Eye Shoppe on 7th, intending to get them refit while scoping out new frames. I walked in and asked about refitting and asked how much the service would cost. I was told that the price would depend on what kind of glasses. I handed them over. The person working the counter took them back to the optometrist (I presume) and came back and perfuntorily said that they won't fit Warby Parker glasses. I inquired why and was told that "they're killing our industry." Perhaps it's your crappy customer service, not Warby Parker? You lost me as a customer within a minute of coming into your shop because you refused to offer me a PAID service based on the brand of glasses. For anyone else who is interested, Eyes on the Slope (one block away) refit my old glasses for free and I found a great pair of new frames there! read more

I went to four other shops to get some sunglasses fixed on 7th Avenue and this was the only one who could do it. It is rare these days to find a place that doesn't mind helping customers with those little things that they sometimes really need like a new screw in sunglassess. It was to my great delight also to find out that the shop itself is awesome, great selection and most of all great knowledgeable staff.
