I'm out of contact lenses and that means that it's time for another eye exam to make sure the peepers are still in good shape. EyeBar had an appointment at a convenient time and I when I arrived, I was seen right on time. I believe that my examination was thorough. I really liked the widget that takes a picture of my retina. The optometrist was able to review that in a couple of different contrasts and even zoom in on one spot. Great to know that we have a record there that can be compared when I return next year. I came to EyeBar solely for new glasses so I only dealt with the Optical Department in 2019. They probably/hopefully have different people working here now. At the time, they did not help with gauging existing fit, lens thickness, anti-glare suggestions, or even insurance. They were the only local store that sold the brand of eyewear, Vari, I wanted at the time and where I could do a one stop shop for frame, lens and have them do it via insurance. However, they offered their services to me with upturned noses as if I was a poor peasant. Typically when I've gone to an optical store they offer pricing, suggestions, customer service that will make me recommend them to others. My experience at EyeBar was the equivalent of walking into a hair salon, telling the stylist what I wanted, and me ending up with the hair brush and scissors myself. I had asked for a baseline pricing but was told over the phone they couldn't tell me anything because they didn't know anything about me. That's fine but instead of saying I can't tell you because I don't know anything they could have requested me to come in to the store or even asked do you know if you have high index lenses or do you need anti-glare? Even when I was onsite purchasing the glasses instead of telling me the difference between the cheaper and the more expensive anti-glare options they have, the associate simply looked at me like do you want the cheaper or more expensive one? Glasses are important and there was no empathy or understanding from the associate, which may be because she herself didn't wear glasses. Even if she did wear contact lenses, rather than making it seem like it was all down to money, if she simply explained the difference it would have been fine. If you can't make a suggestion like the better anti-glare will help with lights during night driving or you actually have the better anti-glare on your glasses now so you should stick with it, why are you even in the optical department. They did not look at my glasses to gauge the lens, the fit, the comfort, but only remarked they were broken, which I had already pointed out too. In terms of insurance, go in knowing what you are entitled to because they are not the optical store that will help you save money or give you what you're entitled to. I knew for my VSP plan I was also entitled to 20% off materials. It was like pulling teeth at this eyewear store for everything. Perhaps incompetence hidden under the guise of haughtiness is what brings the profits. At the end of the day my lenses were thicker than my current pair which were the same frame, the fit was terrible, and the customer service was so incredibly lacking that I didn't have faith in them helping me adjust my glasses. I paid twice the amount hoping I'd save time/hassle only to have twice the issues. read more

Got my prescription and new glasses done here. For the next four weeks I felt really dizzy, out of focus, and just very tired in my eyes. Went back or called multiple times to Eye Bar to let them know that something didnt feel right with the new glasses and that I wanted a refund. All they told me was "it takes time to get used to the new prescription". After a few months, they finally let me talk to the optometrist again and to my shock and disbelief, they had the wrong prescription on the new glasses. I have asked for a refund as it seemed reasonable but the only answer I got was "it has been too long since the purchase". After this bad experience I got myself a pair of new glasses with correct prescription this time while traveling to NY for work. Got a great designer brand frame and lighter + all options added lenses for half the price of what this place charged me for glasses with wrong prescription. Definitely not worth the visit. I would recommend taking your business elsewhere. read more

I had to update my review after a few bad experiences with the opticians (not the optometrist, the Doctors have always been great). It started last year when I ordered new glasses and paid extra for the extra slim lenses. They came back thicker than my previous lenses even though my prescription barely changed and I hadn't ordered extra thin lenses on my previous ones. Please keep in mind, it is a 15 minute walk each way from where I live to this place. I called in, they told me to come back at which I did and after taking a brief look at the lenses, they completely dismissed my concerns. They kept saying that it was how it should be and wouldn't even measure the lenses until I absolutely insisted. I kept trying to make the above argument about how it doesn't make sense for my lenses to be thicker if I paid for it to be extra slim. Finally they stated they would call the lab but only after I left (that was weird). They did give me a call back later and lo and behold, the lab had made a mistake and will remake the lenses. So I had to go back AGAIN two weeks later. The lenses were still thicker than expected, but at least improved but at that point I couldn't be bothered anymore. When the optician placed the lenses on the new frames, they split a bit of the frame. You could tell because the two sides were unequal. It was the same type of split that lead me to get new frames in the first place, just on a smaller scale. I pointed this out and again, my concerns were dismissed. The optician literally shrugged. I was told at the point that I could just activate the warranty within the year and that I could activate the warranty for any reason, even if it was to just get new frames. Effectively, they split my frames, denied it, dismissed it when pointed out, and effectively just wanted me to leave. I later find out that what I was told was completely wrong about the warranty so I was also lied to at the same time. I used to come here because I thought the optometrists were great and I still do. However, with the poor customer service and treatment I received, it is no longer worth the journey when I have a larger Optometry office right next door to me. My partner and I have both already transferred our care over. It is rather unfortunately it came to a head like this but I can no longer recommend this place due to the treatment I received. Deception and gaslighting are terrible qualities for a business to espouse. I would still say the Doctors are worth it and the Front desk staff have always been extremely pleasant and attentive. Perhaps it may be better to get your glasses somewhere else? read more

Avoid at all costs. They have me the wrong Rx. I complained and they said this has always been your Rx. I knew something was wrong, my eyes hurt every time I wore my glasses and contacts. This was my first time going to EyeBar, I went for a yearly glasses & contacts checkup and was seen by Dr. Yip. I thought that my exam was pretty thorough, they do a few different tests to check your eyes (ex. there was a machine that tests your peripheral vision) along with the standard check for your prescription. I also really liked Dr. Yip, she was super knowledgeable, friendly, and personable! She also made sure she explained everything that was happening during the exam and took the time to answer all of my questions, she was pretty much everything I hoped for in a new eye doctor! The office itself is conveniently located, just a short walk from the state street stop and you can buy both contacts and glasses from there. I didn't buy anything today, but was told that I could order contacts and expect them to get delivered the next day which is a good option to have. read more

When choosing eyeglasses, the optician spent lots of time helping me find a beautiful set of frames that complemented my face. When everything was ready, I was alerted promptly and had no troubles picking anything up. Most importantly, when I was having trouble with my insurance (due to a recent switch), the staff was SO helpful and supportive. Ha helped me sort out what I needed to get my visit covered, and I never felt stressed or pressured about the visit not being paid immediately. If you are coming here for an eye exam with contact lens fitting, note that this place does not do normal contact lens fitting, only premium so it will cost you more. It cost me $70 after insurance for contact lens fitting, plus a copay for my eye exam. Even though this place cost a little more than other places, I really liked their service. They did more tests than other optometrists that I've been to. You get to play some sort of game that tests your reaction time. I also had my eyes dilated and the doctor actually showed me the images and explained what they meant to me. I've had my eyes dilated at other places before and they never tell me what they see, they just say everything is ok. I appreciated the doctor showing me the images, even if everything was ok. Funny story- do not go shopping while you are waiting for your eyes to become dilated. It takes about 20 min, and I decided to go shopping during that time. Well, my eyes became so blurry so it was hard to see anything up close. I could not even see the time on my phone and lost track of time. The office called me and asked me if I was coming back... Next time I will probably just sit there and wait. I bought my contacts here too, and they arrived in a few days. read more

I am really befuddled by my experience trying to schedule an eye exam at EyeBar. I usually hate writing negative reviews, but I feel my experience should be noted. I had some issues with my eye glasses and a previous prescription not matching, and I needed a new eye doctor since I moved. I called EyeBar and asked for their advice, and I asked if they could run my glasses through their machine to verify that the prescription matches (it's a simple task that takes literally a minute). They scoffed at my request and arrogantly told me to never buy Warby Parker ever again, and that Warby Parker is complete garbage. Since it was the end of December, they told me that I should just pay out of pocket for another eye exam using my HSA account. They knew that it was the end of the calendar year and my HSA is a typical "use-it-or-lose-it" account. I thought it was extremely presumptuous to default to "give us your unused money to pay out of pocket." I called my previous eye doctor the end of January and he told me that since I was only a month short of being due for an eye exam, EyeBar should be able to just give me a new eye exam since it falls within the same calendar year. When I called EyeBar to schedule this, they told me I wasn't due for the appointment, again suggested paying out of pocket, and rudely rushed me off the phone. Clearly they do not care about loyalty with customers, they just want your money. Go elsewhere. read more

I had no idea I was so handsome until Dr. LaMalva gave me a proper prescription lens. She could do wonders for your self esteem, too. She is authoritative, accessible, and charming all in one. The best part is she just gets the job done. I've been going to her for something like 7 years now, and I will continue to go as long as I'm not legally blind. Maybe even then, just 'cause she's so damn nice. I have glasses and contacts. I'm also very high-maintenance. Dr. LaMalva seems to acknowledge this by making absolutely sure she gets everything right and by offering me every conceivable contact lens and solution, just so I have the right fit with the most comfort. I was looking to do a full eye exam + contact fittings. Lucky this place was covered by my insurance and well reviewed on Yelp. it's also 2 steps away from Starbucks..score! If you want to do a contact lens fitting, its usually not covered by your insurance and it costs between $55 (no astigmatism) to $80 for those with astigmatism. Bit of a rip off if you ask me! I have UnitedHealth insurance as a grad student and tho it was "covered", i still had to pay $40 out of pocket. My total was $120. Quite ALOT considering having lived in Hong Kong all my life, the exact same comprehensive eye exam there is FREE!!! Con's: - My 2:30 appointment actually began at 2:50pm. Being on time is important to me. - They gently rushed me out just to get to the 3:00 appointment by 3:15pm, which I didn't appreciate. - The Dr rushed me out to the office before even dilating my pupils to check for the health of my eye. I had to ask about it after I was hurried out. Apparently, I had to make another appointment next time because of the 3 o'clock patient. - They ran out of stock of the lenses that the doc wanted me to try and I have to come back at another time after they order it to pick them up to try. - Their office was located inside a glasses shop, which was confusing to find at first. Especially since the shop was tucked into an alley. Pro's: - I really really liked Dr. Chang's personality and smarts. She was professional, direct, astute and knew what my "eye" concerns were. - She actually made my current prescription "lighter" than what it was before and I can see clearer! - The receptionist was a sweetheart after she warms up to you. She was efficient and was never exasperated when she had to explain the bill breakdown or scheduling. Overall, my experience was fine and I really did like AND trust my doctor, but I'm sure a little improvement with "service" and timely issues would really benefit the business! She really takes the time to explain everything and also enjoys getting to know you on a personal level. I needed to get an exam for macula edema (?) for a new MS medication I will start taking in the coming weeks. I found the results on Yelp for this office so I made an appt. I was able to come in the next day which was great. I had a bit of trouble finding it but once I did it was smooth sailing. The tests were done quickly and then I went into see Dr. Chang. She was SO amazing - she wanted to understand why I needed this test, what issues I had had in the past with my MS and how I was feeling today. She explained why the test was necessary and was very sympathetic to my situation. She wrote the results up the next next morning and the secretary faxed them over to my Neurologist - and I got a copy emailed to me just in case. Everyone was so pleasant and helpful during a stressful time for me and it made the entire experience very relaxed. I've been told "you're lucky to still have your eyes" because of my contacts and that I'll probably lose my vision because I had to postpone my dilation. -When they call to confirm your appointment, it is too late to change. Equally excellent are Mo, Jackie and Jill. Mo, the optician,is so helpful and patient and does a superb job with the glasses. And, he's got a great eye for picking out frames as do Jackie and Jill. The whole staff here is super friendly and the glasses are high quality. I've gotten more pairs than I care to admit and I love them all. They carry frames at all price points from super high end to budget conscious. I was traveling and forgot to bring contacts. I had such a hard time trying to find anyone who could get me contacts in a short period of time. This place was absolutely wonderful and worked with my eye doctor back in Texas to get contacts ordered and delivered the next day via currier service!!! They even had them labeled and ready to go when I got there. I was soooooo grateful to not have to wear glasses to Provincetown!! I cannot thank everyone enough for how helpful you all were! I liked going to Dr. LaMalva so much! She is thoughtful and attentive, and when I first visited her, she taught me that I'd been putting my eyeliner on incorrectly for basically my entire adult life. Who knew? Her staff are friendly, and the renovations they've done to the building are lovely. There's a lot of choice among the different frames, and Dr. LaMalva is very knowledgeable about different contact lens brands. I'd always struggled with dry itchy contacts, and she set me up with a wonderful pair that never bother me. Totally life-changing! I'd never been fitted for contacts before. I was in a change-y, upbeat sort of mindset so I decided to find a place. Yelp was the obvious choice and I found this office and a few others... With some calling around, I found their quote for a fitting without insurance was the cheapest of the five-star places. After finding it without too much trouble from the Government Center T stop, I met with Dr. Chang. She was super-nice and clearly good at what she does. She also told me everything I needed to know (because who isn't uncertain when they start jamming things onto their eyeball?) The fifth star for me comes from the fact that even though their office is in an eyeglass shop, there wasn't just no hard sell, there was no sell at all. It wasn't brought up--which suited me, because I figured I would grab my contacts on the cheap online. This place is great. I met with Dr. Chang who works with Dr. Lamalva. My health insurance plan only pays for an eyeglass exam every 24 months with a $25 copay, so I wanted to be sure I got one hell of an exam, and this was my best exam yet. I've been wearing eyeglasses for 18 years and have been to a lot of different optometrists, I've moved around for school and work. I'd give them 4.5 stars, because they lose 0.5 star because the eyeglass shop/waiting room needs new carpet, it looks kind of shabby. I've been to fancier oh-so-hip eyeglass places, and here the look detracts from the otherwise perfect performance of the staff. Lucky for them, 4.5 rounds up to 5, and yeah I've got a pet peeve about places with bad carpeting. Once they upgrade their looks to something more clean and modern they will easily outshine any other optometrist. Efficient eye exam with helpful information and great results - A day after my eye exam, I am so impressed with Dr. Lamalva that I thought I'd write a review. Dr. Lamalva gave me great information about my eyes, and asked questions that were actually helpful to finding the right prescription. I went here for an eye exam for two reasons: Lynda B. recommended this optometrist and it's very close to my new dentist. The receptionist is a sweetheart. I saw Dr. Park, who was very warm and professional. i'm super blind; I have one of the highest prescriptions of any of Dr. Park's patients, which meant that I had to get super strong contacts. I also had to get new lenses for my glasses, and For Eyes Opticians is located within the office. I'll be wearing those a lot more, now that I have something called "neovascularization" and thus must cut down on how often I wear my contacts. I recommend this office, though. The staff is very helpful and professional and usually give you free contact solution and cases. read more

I had been going to my eye doctor in Worcester since I was a kid... and the 1.5+ hour commute from Boston combined with their limited hours made me decide it was definitely time for a switch. So of course, I resorted to yelp only to find the lovely Dr. Lamalva. I honestly can say she is the most amazing optometrist! I have NEVER felt like she's tried to sell me anything, and she just is so sweet and honest. Definitely a comfortable friendly atmosphere -- and she's gorgeous too! If it's your first time coming, remember that the street her office is located on is a pedestrian street off of School Street. it's a little tucked in there, but once you see Starbucks, you know you're in the right place! read more

Great humor, and actually took the time to order a different shape of glasses because the fit wasn't exactly right, AFTER dealing with my indecisiveness, as well as my boyfriends. I really appreciate this type of personal service. So props to you. I did a little digging, exploring the options before committing here, and this place is the cheapest around. Typically the cheaper options lack quality, and the selection of frames is pretty lackluster. That is NOT the case here; NO knock offs. I paid a fraction of the price I would have paid for places in Brookline and Boston. The reason for my 3 stars is completely unrelated to Dr. Lamalva. I love her! Been going to her office for about 3 yrs now and she's everything that all the other reviews have said. One word- FANTASTIC. With that said, her office staff has changed over the past year and her very friendly older receptionist is now gone. Booo. New receptionist is awful. Moody, rude and really not a very nice person. I hate going in or calling now for an appointment. This person obviously doesn't like their job and wants every patient to know it.
