I got an eye exam and contact lens fitting at Dr. Shomali's optometric clinic and it was a great experience all around. The experience with front desk representatives can range from "alright" to "great" (depending on who is working that day) but Dr. Shomali is an absolutely amazing doctor! Dr. Shomali is a genuinely nice person who wants to work with you to make sure that your vision needs are being met. He won't try to peddle any extras at you (he does recommend things but doesn't pressure you to go through with it), which I really appreciate. I have never LOVED an eye doc before. I didn't have an optometrist and just went with whoever at someplace convenient. I saw these reviews and was like man, that's weird, who cares about eye doctors this much? And now?... I DO. I care that much!! Dr Shomali was seriously amazing and I'm so glad I saw him! I had my Rx updated in the fall somewhere else and felt like it was off. Old eye doc said it's just a new Rx, you should get used to it in a few days. It got better, but that was just the improvement from, "I feel like I am in a fishbowl and can't see anything" to, "Eh I can't really see better with vs. without glasses and get headaches at the end of the day. Maybe I'm just getting old and my vision isn't going to be perfect anymore." Flash forward six months and I'm pretty sick of not being able to easily read and feeling kind of woozy at the end of the day. I finally bit the bullet and went to a new eye doc, and as luck would have it, ended up at Dr. Shomali's office. First of all, I appreciate his honesty. Looking at my old vs new Rx he was outraged. "WHAT? No! Who did this? WHAT? This is MESSED. UP." He spent a good amount of time sitting with me to figure out all the things that were wrong, from actual lens strength to what height they estimated for my pupils. I also really liked his tech. He has that machine that can just snap a photo of the back of your eye so you don't have to get pupils dilated and lose half a day. Instead of the dreaded air puff, he had a more precise machine for measuring intraocular pressure to check for glaucoma. And even just the basic "1 or 2, A or B" was better: he could do half-and-half on the screen to measure if an Rx was correct or if it was too nearsighted/farsighted. I completely understand why he has these rave reviews. What an awesome eye doc! read more

I recently moved here from Los Angeles and was unsure of who to trust with my eyes. After looking on Yelp I saw that Dr. Shomali had great reviews. Making my appointment was super easy. While I was there I told him that I wanted to try contacts, but that I've failed at multiple attempts in the past. He had one of his staff sit with me for a very long time for my contact fitting. I mean, it took me 90 minutes just to get a contact into my eye. And then an additional 60 minutes to get said contact out. They had me put both in before I left. Dr. Shomali gave me several samples to try, different brands and different kinds (i.e. dailies, bi-weekly, monthly). After I tried these for about 2 months I settled on the contact for me. They made the ordering super easy and again they're very friendly. Dr. Shomali is really great! If you're uneasy at the eye doctor he really helps calm your nerves. And he's really funny! I have already recommended him to several friends. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. 2 thumbs up! read more

Dr Shomali is an excellent optometrist who provides outstanding eye examinations and eye care. He is very thorough and does not overlook anything. He was the one who discovered an abnormal growth at the back of my eye. He was concerned and referred me to an eye specialist at Mass Eye & Ear. Upon further examinations, tests and MRI, it was discovered to be a brain tumor pressing on my optic nerve. Thanks to Dr Shomali's vigilance, it was caught early and removed by brain surgery at MGH. He's my favorite doctor so far because he is also kind, thoughtful, considerate and efficient. I would reccomend him to anyone! read more

I've been seeing Dr.Shomali for almost 20 years! My dad started taking me there as a kid and as an adult I keep going back. He is very professional and the eye exams are always very efficient. I also love that you have the option to opt for the machine to dilate the eyes instead of the fluid that makes them blurry. I did not have my eyes examined here...I came for the glasses. I will however be going back there for my next exam. I was treated well (maybe given slightly preferential treatment since I know someone who works there) and given a fair price for my frames. The staff didn't seem to mind that I had to try on nearly every frame in the shop (some purely for comedy value) and they even played along. They also offered to order in a few more pairs so I could try those out as well. Due to their lower markup (Dr. Shomali said it's because they don't have a ritzy office and 100 employees) I was able to purchase some fancy-pants Prada glasses which really means nothing other than I can say "they're Prada" when someone asks :-\ Though they came with a snazzy bag and certificate of authenticity (seriously) so that counts for...something...right? Dr. Shomali is a great guy and fun to deal with. Every time I see him he asks were I got my snazzy glasses. Hee. I like him and will continue to take my business here. My only regret is that I didn't have my exam here as well. read more

I wasn't really expecting to get personalized care from an optometrist's office, but I have to say that Dr. Shomali goes above and beyond the call of duty for his patients. I went in last week for an eye exam, and was initially examined by his intern (minus one star for that, she was cheery and talkative but not terribly good at what she was doing), but Dr. Shomali took over halfway through and the rest of the exam took all of 5 minutes. After the exam was over, i got to try out a couple different pairs of contact lenses for a couple days before deciding on the ones i liked best. When i went back in, the receptionist was quick and helpful in sorting out my insurance benefits, and Dr. Shomali checked with me again to make sure I didn't want to try out any more lenses before ordering. A few boxes of free cleaning solution later (he hands the stuff out like candy), i was on my way again. A few days later my new contacts came in, and when I went to pick them up Dr. Shomali hooked me up with a $55 rebate on the lenses (a nice bit of money considering I only paid $9 for them after insurance). Overall, i probably didn't spend more than an hour or two in his office total, and I'm now set for contacts for another year and soon I'll be $55 richer, too. If only all doctors visits could end so well... read more

Just the absolute best doctor ever. I wish all medical professionals could be like Dr. Shomali. I came here a few times for eye exams, I was happy but it was uneventful, didn't think about leaving a review or anything, and then a few years in I suddenly starting having eye problems and even though I work from home now and there are a gazillion closer doctors, I wanted to see him because I trust him. Turns out I had inadvertently done something psychotic with my contact lens that was causing my symptoms (long pandemic story), and he sat with me for a long time until we figured it out and fixed it. By the way, he treated me exactly the same when I had top-of-the-line insurance versus when I had no insurance. The best thing about him is that most doctors either are patient and sit with you until they solve your problem OR they run efficiently on time, and respect your time, but he manages to do both. If I ever move from Boston I would travel back here for an annual eye exam, because you don't find people with this much credibility very often. read more

In the 20 some years of my life, I have never met a more amazing eye doctor. Not only is he tall and handsome (and super young-looking for his age! I was shocked...still am shocked....), but he is absolutely the sweetest, most patient, and caring doctor ever. Most of the time, my past experiences with eye doctors felt pure business-y. But here at Dr. Shomali's office, it felt like he really cared about me and my eyes! He was actually very caring, thoughtful, and quite a humorous guy! What I loved most about him though was his honesty and genuity. As a side question, I asked him about Air Optix's Color lenses, and he spoke his honest opinions about them for me. He even gave me a sample to try on! During the entire eye exam, he made me feel very comfortable and confident. This place will definitely be my go-to eye care from now on as long as I stay in Boston! His front staff was also very friendly as well (kudos to "Twee" and "Hwa"). I am signing up for yelp just so I can post this review. My experience was nothing short of awesome. Dr. Shomali was friendly and funny. I felt like I had been coming to see him for years when it was only my first appointment with him. He made a lot of jokes :) He was also meticulous about my exam, and spent a lot of time checking things were okay and answering all my questions. When it was over, he got on the phone personally, not his secretary (who is also very nice!), and called my insurance company to try and save me money. After, while writing up my bill, he took off a few charges just for the heck of it. My bill was 1/3 what I predicted it would be coming into the appointment. I love appointments like this where you know the doctors truly care about their patients and their well being, and aren't crooks just out to get money. He told me to come in for a short follow up exam that wouldn't cost me anything. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Shomali. read more

I have been going to Dr. Shomali for the last 7 years and will never change my eye doctor if I can help it. He is fantastic and is always very knowledgeable and accommodating. I am a very indecisive person and I can never make a decision on what kind of glasses I want so he gave me three different frames to take home and try out for a week to make sure I liked the ones I purchased. Also, two years ago, lacerated my cornea and Dr. Shomali came to see me the Saturday before Christmas in his office. It was one of the most painful experiences I have ever had but Dr. Shomali helped me through it and ensured that I saw a specialist that day. Obviously, when you're down to one pair of contact lenses you can't be a chooser - so I was pleasantly surprised to not only get the time and date I needed to update my prescription and order more from Dr. Shomali, but also to experience such speedy service. Within 40 minutes I had filled out paperwork, gone through the eye chart routine, sampled a new pair of lenses, gotten my eyeballs electronically photographed (a very cool alternative to pupil dilation that lets you skip the three hours of near-blindness and shows you almost instantly what's going on back there) and ordered a year's supply of Acuvues. Dr. Shomali was quick with quips and easy to talk to. He made sure I walked away with an extra pair of contacts in case of emergencies. His receptionist even took the time to explain the steps for claiming a $50 rebate, which my wallet appreciates. I was informed they might be moving offices soon, so keep an eye out for that (har har). read more

I used to dread going to the eye doctor, since my experiences often included someone condescendingly selling me something I didn't need or want. Then a coworker recommended Dr. S. (over 3 years ago) And I hope I never need to find another optometrist. He's attentive, considerate, intelligent, and (bonus) amusing as h*ll! I remember going to Dr. Shomali when my eyes felt like flaming coals, and he helped me heal them, with a few very helpful suggestions.. Some medical, some practical, and some surprising ones. If you'd like a personal, professional experience at a downtown Boston optometrist office, you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't give this place a try. You may need to wait a bit to get in. Look no further if you're one of those unlucky few who have been on the hunt for a wonderful, reasonable, and accommodating optometrist. Dr. Shomali is all you need. I was recommended to see Dr. Shomali by a co-worker (we have one of the more difficult vision providers) and was happy to see how conveniently located he was to my home and office (he's located near the Park Street T-Stop). I arrived to two receptionists, both very accommodating, and was happy to see a large selection of frames in the waiting area. To my surprise there was an issue with my insurance (it came up as inactive, although my paycheck begged to differ) and despite this, Dr. Shomali came out from the back office, offered to give me a discount, and said he'd still see me and would be willing to reimburse me once I got my insurance issue sorted. Dr. Shomali is incredibly funny! I've never had a more pleasant and stress-free appointment. I was refitted for contacts and ordered them (I'm one of those hold-on-to-the-last-pair-until-forever kind of patients) and ordered new lenses for my glasses. I was in and out within an hour (even with the insurance hassle) and was on my way. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Shomali to other and look forward to my next visit. read more

The absolute best treatment/experience I have ever had with an Optometrist. I have had glasses since age 8, and by far Dr. Shomali has shown himself to be not only the most caring, but the most knowledgeable. I had been misdiagnosed with a partial retinal detachment by a doctor in California years ago, and then visited a place in San Francisco thinking that was the reason for my inability to see 20/20 with contacts. Although that Dr said I had no retinal detachment and there was only some normal aging, he basically sent me on my way with an ill-fitting pair that CONSTANTLY shifted throughout the day and warned against me never seeing well with contacts or glasses due to my astigmatism - blaming that for the poor vision with my contacts. During my appointment with Dr. Shomali he assured me my condition was no reason to "give-up" on achieving my best vision. Not only did he send me home with multiple samples that day, but he special ordered contacts for me to trial in different strengths so I could determine which improved my vision the most. He spent WEEKS with me trialing them and visiting his office so we could find the perfect prescription. Never has another doctor invested this much patience or effort in me. I ended up visiting Dr. Shomali (finding him off Yelp - then latter realized he was on my vision plan) for a second opinion. I've already exhausted my vision insurance for the year so this was an out of pocket expense for me. His prices were extremely reasonable (did call a few places prior). Reason I was looking for a second opinion....because the new prescriptions the other optometrist (which I've been going to for the last 3 years) did not seem to work right especially after multiple visits. Dr. Shomali is professional, thorough and friendly. He diagnosed that I had dry eye and my astigmatism is not the mainstream type (back toric lenses). He found a manufacturer that still makes them and placed a special order for me. When I tried on the lenses - it was like I can see clearly again! I've been battling for the last 4-6 months with my vision problem that my old optometrist couldn't resolve. I highly recommend Dr. Shomali and will be going to him from now on. read more

Dr. Shomali really cares about you and taking care of your eyes! He found that I have astigmatism whereas past optometrists just kept increasing my prescription to compensate for it. He also adjusted the prescription to reduce strain on my eyes since I'm on the computer all day. To make sure, he gave me two trial pairs of contacts to try, one with slightly less power. The difference was amazing! Who knew even a small change of 0.25 power could make reading computer screens that much clearer and easier! My husband sees Dr. Shomali as well and referred me because he also had an exceptional experience. Being new to Boston and how things work here, it did take me a few visits to get used to Dr. Shomali's office, but at the end, I'm so glad I gave him a try. Dr Shomali and Michelle have really taken care of me. I bought some nice frames somewhere else, unfortunately they broke a few months later. The frame retailer wouldnt support their product and its been difficult getting the warranty fixed. I came to Dr Shomali in this situation and he helped outfit me with temporary contacts to get me through the weekend and that same day helped me order new lens, and even offered to fit these with some temp frames for free. I ended up getting a spare pair of mine fitted. It was a stressful situation almost being without vision for a week but the office took care of me. Cant recommend these guys enough. I've seen Dr. Shomali twice now for my chronic dry eyes and he is a really great doctor. Both times he came in at 8:30am to accommodate my early work schedule. Just went for my first visit after moving far away from my previous eye doc (which was fortunate, because that office was terrible). I called to make an appointment just based on prior yelp reviews, and the person that answered the phone and made my appointment was as friendly as can be. I was able to be seen within a week, which was great in itself. Dr. Shomali was super nice, funny, informative, professional...the whole visit was really a pleasure. I left the office with tons of sample contacts - some to try a new type, and extras of the type I already wear since I was running low. Absolutely no sales pressure in terms of ordering my contacts from them that day, to the point where I'll happily spend more money and order from them rather than online simply because no one tried to pressure me otherwise. I was referred to Dr. Shomali by a friend and wish that I had asked her for a referral sooner.The entire experience was fun, fast and friendly. He has the latest equipment and it was the first time I had ever seen images of my eyeballs. Dr. Shomali explained in detail the various components of my eyes. Had a great experience - I was 2 mos pregnant at the time, and he gave me a few samples of dailies to use specifically for after I had the baby -- he was like: "you will not want to think about contacts after having the baby; just use these, throw them away, get a new pair." He was so right. It was such an incredibly thoughtful gesture. Subsequently, when I was on maternity leave, I went to another eye doctor closer to where I live (Dr. S is close to where I work), and the experience was drastically different. I couldn't wait to get back to Dr. S., and sure enough, today was day 2 back to work, I called because my eyes have been bothering me. They squeezed me in today; Dr. S. recommended an amazing pair of contacts for dry eye-- he gave me 10 days of samples, and honestly, they are unbelievable. I've had them in all day.
