It has been a while-the 3rd star is for sentimental value. This place was a favorite when I was younger so I decided to visit while home for the weekend. I was told they are now under new management. The restaurant is located on the Tombigbee River so if you're lucky to have seat next to a window you can watch the river traffic or you can step out onto the "patio area". Service was great as usual. Menu options are limited- Catfish is the only fish option, there are crab claws, hamburger steak, chicken fingers to name a few. 11/08/25- Been going to eat here for 45 years but haven't been in a couple of years. Went tonight with a church group expecting a good night. I was sadly disappointed. They weren't crowded or busy (first hint on a Sat night) but our appetizers were small and salty. Around the table, entrees took a long time to arrive then were wrong, barely warm and just simply had very little taste. My HB steak was just a burger patty on a plate with some canned brown gravy dumped on top. No toast or anything. Was supposed to come with a baked potato but came with sweet potato fries. Even the slaw they've been famous for for years and years, was just not the same and wasn't good... We won't be back. read more

It has been many years since I have been to Ezell's Fish Camp. We just up and decided to come here and we really enjoyed our outing to this camp/cabin turned restaurant. The restaurant, located on the Tombigbee River has an overall nice atmosphere and pleasant staff. Our table enjoyed whole catfish (seasoned to perfection), boiled shrimp, kid's tenders, fries, sweet potato fries, and fried okra. Clean plates all around. Their famous coleslaw (delicious) and hushpuppies comes with each entree. Not sure when I will be back but I'll be back!!! read more

Along the Tombigbee River, just a few miles outside the small town of Pennington, Al, is a restaurant full of staff who know what it is to be great southern cooks. I haven't visited this place since I was a kid. This restaurant is inside of a river-front cabin that was built before the Civil War, and the word is that any hunter around can tell you just where to find this place; they all flock there every year. Ezell's has *real* food -- and that, to me, says a lot. This stuff isn't store-bought. The cooks in that kitchen put together a meal that sets them apart from every other fish camp I have been to. Fish camps tend to have that same breading on their catfish. It all tastes the same, just some of them tend to taste more "fishy" than others. There was no dirt taste in this fish. I have been going to Ezell's fish camp for the better part of 40 years, although I am a dedicated customer, there are some things that I have a gripe about... the menu portions have shrank to an almost comical size, not 5 years ago I never left there hungry, but that has changed...for the price you pay you should get a portion that satisfies. Not now, now don't get me wrong...what food you do get is first rate, just not enough of it for the price!! The service is second to none, all the workers are dedicated to the customers!!. I would be comfortable giving them a 3 out of 5 rating due solely to the portion size. Otherwise a 5 across the board!!! read more

This place is still standing After oh so many years. Stopped by here with my 84 year old mother and she loved it. She thought the catfish and shrimp combo was great! She really liked the coleslaw. We both agreed that the portions were smaller. The hospitality was really inviting. The food was cooked to order and not sitting in a warming tray. I was disappointed that they were out of diet soda but oh well. Great time looking over the river while having a meal...the best part of the visit! I would go back. read more

Nothing fancy about this place, but it, by itself is rich in history and folklore of the past presenting it every day to the present. I am from the gulf coast & we had fresh fish or other seafood at least once a week. I absolutely love Ezells. Had my birthday celebration a couple of years ago there. Love their fried catfish & I can make a meal on their coleslaw. I'm very picky about my coleslaw. The service is great as well as the ambiance. I just wish I could find a place as great that served fresh River Catfish. That's what I was raised on & it's definitely different than pond raised. It would be great to have a choice between the two. And I definitely miss fresh stuffed flounder with crab meat stuffing. read more

Ezell's has hands down the best coleslaw you will ever eat. The food is always delicious and the service is always friendly. It's BYOB if you wish to have drinks. Otherwise they have really good sweet tea. The cheese grits are some of my favorite, only second to when I make mine homemade. If you're ever in the area it's a must try hidden treasure. read more

The Holy Grail and standard bearer of catfish camps. Ezell's is a family tradition for me. I grew up spending many a summer at my grandma's house in Choctaw County, Alabama, and we'd eat at Ezell's for dinner or after church on Sunday's. It's always a treat and the service and atmosphere can't be beaten. The restaurant is located in it's original building along the mighty Tombigbee River, next to what used to be a big cotton field. It has a large front porch with rocking chairs for you to enjoy after your meal. The fried whole catfish is the best item on the menu, along with their patented cole slaw that they bring you for an appetizer. You have to experience Ezell's at least once and when you do, you'll definitely be back! read more

Ezell's Fish Camp is a great, weird, back-woods, southern fish fry restaurant. They've been at this location for decades and the place is full of character. Photos and taxidermy cover most of the walls throughout the mishmash of rooms that make up this restaurant. It is a unique experience and worth the trip. Never mind that the food isn't as good as it once was. It's serviceable food but not always terribly fresh. What's on offer is fried, be it catfish, crab-claws, frogs legs or pickles. But the hush puppies and the slaw are always good. Go for the experience. You'll never forget the place. And don't bother with any other locations. Like Dreamland, you're going to eat in an institution, the food is secondary, so if you don't go to the original there's no point. read more

Fresh cat fish, the best Cole slaw you will ever taste. The waitress told us she had just made it! Sitting outside by the river was quite the experience I really enjoyed it. The quality of the food offered has declined over the years but is still pretty good. Do arrive during a busy time so not to be served anything that has been left-over from earlier. The place has some of that Old South charm and the wait staff are friendly and attentive. Watch the prices however and understand that the all-you-can-eat deal has vanished and has been replaced with a single plate of fish that soon get cold. It is hit and miss. We ate here the other night and portions were small. The fish filets I had were very small. They tasted ok. I had two small hush puppies and a small handful of sweet potato fries. The coleslaw did not taste as good as usual. Heavy on the onion flavor. My daughter's shrimp and grits was very good. The lady who waited on us never returned to refill our water glass. This is my biker spot the first of every year bikers from throughout the southeast meet and eat. What a great place, the place is a historical location with a nature museum in its on right. Food was good. Service was good till meal was served. My son had drank all of his water as at that time we were the only ones in restaurant It was some time later before the server refill his glass. When meal was finished server was seated at cash register and did not bring check. We walked to register and gave server a credit card which she put in a iPad type device. when credit card was completed she hand iPad to me with it showing different boxes showing different percent of tips I could leave. I press the 15% box which i thought was to much for the service but it was the lowest box. Then I was given iPad back to sign with my finger and my ticked was printed. What a disappointment. Took family there, and drove from Selma. Couldn't order the seafood platter as they didn't have everything to put on it. Couldn't get the combo with stuffed crab and oysters. Not available. No blooming onion available. One of us finally ordered grilled shrimp and got shrimp and grits. Others ordered catfish fillets. Very small servings-- three fillets about 3" long. Ezell's Fish Camp is located on the Tombigbee River in Lavaca, AL, just a few miles from Butler, AL. Ezell's doesn't have to advertise and there's no sign so you have to watch for the the turn off of Highway 10 on the Tombigbee River Bridge going into Marengo County. You'll love the rustic atmosphere, starting with the rocking chairs on the front porch of a pre-Civil War cabin that has been expanded over the years since 1937. The walls are covered with deer heads, wild hogs, fish and more. They have a diversified menu of seafood, steaks, etc but if you go, you have to get the catfish, hushpuppies, and cole slaw which have all been rated #1 in Alabama by numerous rating services. Catfish filets are the most popular, but personally I like the whole catfish the best. I think they are tastier. Many of the servers have been there for years and there's a down home atmosphere of deep fried Southern Hospitality. Oh yeah, be sure to bring your children. We made a trip down from Tuscaloosa - the drive was a little longer than expected - but it was well worth it. We loved everything about the experience -- sitting out back on the porch wistfully watching the water roll by - while eating some of the best food in Alabama - it really doesn't get much better. The ambiance - the staff - the food - everything was A+ -- this is the type of place that "road trips" were meant for -- pack up a few friends and family and head to Butler -- they'd probably even let you pitch a tent if you needed to stay the night --- I just wish they were a little closer. read more
