Well, thank goodness the old place is closed and I hope no one finds Ezra's new place. The story: So I wanted to sell my van and took it here for an inspection; pass or fail, I just wanted to see what to expect and be honest with a potential buyer. I figured the van was worth $1,600. Ezra said a friend would buy the van, and wanted to work on it there. I'm a trusting idiot so I said sure, but I'm not paying for any repairs. My mistake. Fast forward a couple months, lots of back and forth, meanwhile, my insurance has run out. The buyer has "disappeared" and Ezra wants to charge me $1,200 for work that "his friend" did. I go to confront him, he's not there, *his own mechanics told me that some of the work listed wasn't done*. They won't let me take the van, But get this: a few nights later, I'm out with my wife at the Iron Gate theater on 37th & Chestnut Street. We pull into a parking space, and lo and behold:*MY VAN IS PARKED IN FRONT OF US, ON THE STREET, ON A SATURDAY NIGHT AT 8:00 P.M., WITH NO INSURANCE* I take pictures and reluctantly go to the theater. I checked during intermission, Van is still there. At the end of the show, we wait. Around 10:00pm, one of Ezra's workers shows up; he was visiting his girlfriend. I make him call Ezra on his phone while I make a video of him and I talking to Ezra. Ezra refuses to discuss the matter. So I get the guy to drive my van to my house and I give him a ride home because I'm not a jerk. We end up just donating the van to NPR because I don't want to even see it again and I'm not going to pay for continued insurance and registration. Total loss and a waste of time. :-( A few weeks later I get a threatening letter from Ezra telling me that his lawyer will be in touch If I don't pay him $1,200. I wish. I would have liked to have wasted some of his money on having him hire a lawyer, but I ignored his letter and I never heard another word. Needless to say, avoid this scam artist like the plague. Worst shop experience I've had in my entire life. I was insulted and yelled at by the owner. I walked in to what I thought was REN's Auto on Baltimore, since that's what the signage says (even since REN's burned down a while ago, the signs are still up and I thought they had reopened.) I was informed that it is actually Ezra's now, they had moved in and taken over after leaving their Spruce St location, so I decided to stay and get my car inspected there anyway. They told me it would take a bit, and I said as long as I have it by closing time so I can get to an appointment in the morning, it's completely fine. A few hours go by and I get a phone call from an elderly man, Ezra, saying that my car failed inspection because I need new brake pads. He already sounded irritated, and also said that it would take several days to get it fixed as he had to order brake pads. I said no, it's ok and I would just come pick up my van. After a few minutes, I found an alternative way to my morning appointment, so I called back to tell him I can actually get the work done after all. He began yelling at me, saying he's "been doing this for 40 years" and I can send my husband (I dropped my car off alone and I'm not married) to look at the car and pick it up. He shouted that he had no interest in working with me because he doesn't like the way I talked, and to get the car and pay him by 4:30 because that's when they close, and he absolutely would not deal with me further. He angrily carried on for a minute, but as the insults rolled on I honestly stopped really hearing anything he was saying. I was absolutely floored by this experience. I was very upset at his sexist and aggressive attitude, and ended up actually sending someone else to pick up the car for me because I didn't want to see him face to face. I thought maybe a man would have better luck reasoning with Ezra since his remarks made it clear he valued my imaginary husband's opinions more. When my friend went in to pick up my car, Ezra had my car up on the lift with all the wheels off, saying he was doing the job anyway. My friend described him to me as very confused and angry, and Ezra actually yelled at my friend as well, in front of another waiting customer. For a bit, he apparently didn't seem to remember that he had told me he on the phone that he won't work with me and demanded that my car be picked up before closing time. He continued to yell at my friend and make him wait before putting my car back together. Another employee eventually gave my friend my keys, and said to take the car and not worry about paying for the inspection. My friend said this other mechanic seemed embarrassed and empathetic. read more

I've been going here for 3 or 4 years and they do great work. I also trust them, which is pretty great on its own for a mechanic. They always give me a call when they're working on the car, and sometimes they've got bad news for me but they always tell me how it is and give me the options. There were multiple times where they easily could have squeezed money out of me but had a lot of integrity and gave me solid advice. I appreciate it, Ezra! read more

I had an extremely bad (frankly kind of crazy) experience here. If there were a 0 stars, that's what I would choose. Ezra seemed accommodating and easy going, but he's a complete con artist. When I dropped my car, he said he wouldn't do anything or charge anything without talking to me. When I came back in to pick up the car, he said there was nothing wrong with it and my bill was $100. When I told him this wasn't our agreement, he ran over to my car, pulled the key out of the ignition and shoved it in his pocket--basically holding the car hostage. I tried to compromise with him, but he went further. He drove my car into his garage and locked the garage door. He even threatened to lock ME in the garage if I didn't get out! It was really nuts. Also fun, he called me a "very unreasonable woman." There was absolutely no way to communicate with him. The next day I paid the bill so this could end. I took my car back with a spare key...but he still held on to my original key (because he took it home with him!) and I had to go back three more times to retrieve it. read more

I have NO IDEA why this place doesn't have more glowing reviews. Ezra has been in the neighborhood for FORTY years and he is such a nice, old man that knows his stuff. I don't post many reviews anymore, but when it is warranted (& needed) I will make an exception. My first experience with Ezra's service was 3 weeks ago, when my husband's VW Golf needed his service engine light checked. After checking it, they told me that something with the engine caused the light to turn on, but it was fine. (This could have been an easy opportunity for any crooked mechanic to take advantage.) He only charged me for their time, which was reasonable. My husband's car has been running fine since then. My second experience was with my Subaru Impreza- I knew it needed a wheel alignment after I blew my two front tires on Girard and my tire guy told me that I needed an alignment based off of the wear on my old tires. (I was going to take it to Meineke down the street but their alignment cost $80, Ezra only charged $60.) Ezra, himself, first wanted to know how/why I needed an alignment (I told him my tire guy story.) He nodded approvingly & told me to return in a few hours. When I came back he was wrapping up with another customer; before he checked me out he told me about how his previous customer almost got ripped off at a place literally around the corner telling him he needed new brakes when he only went in for an oil change. Of course, Ezra his been his mechanic for years and brought his car to him and- surprise!- he didn't need new brakes. He told me my car definitely needed the alignment & I should avoid hitting curbs (I blame it on all the damn potholes.) He seemed like a super sweet, nice guy and I will continue to bring our vehicles to him. West Philly: We have a fast, reliable, gentile, affordable & local mechanic! Support this business! read more

This is the best car repair in PHL esp. if you drive a foreign car. Ezra knows his stuff! They are honest, reliable, solid mechanics and they truly help their customers and don't overcharge. I would not know what to do if I had not found them. Many of my friends use Ezras and everyone only speaks highly of them. Absolutely atrocious! Ezra was rude and dismissive and failed to address my questions about a repair that did not actually fix the problem. Both times I went to this shop, my final payment amount was considerably higher than the agreed upon amount when I agreed to the service. Used to go here years ago, so my info may be outdated. It's cheap and the owner operator works hard. But once he replaced my driver side door and when I came to pick the car up, it didn't shut right.
