One of my go-to spots for delicious, pretty, and authentic mochi in LA/SoCal!…read more This most recent time I went, I picked up a pack of 6 mochis for a gift for around $13. I was able to pick and choose each mochi type I wanted. I like how they have new mochis to choose from such as this blueberry mochi I saw. They tend to be pretty fragile, so make sure to handle them with extra care! The mochis are soft and flavorful. A great sweet treat/snack. Cash is preferred (they upcharge if you use card for a price under a certain limit). It's also really cool to know about the history of this place. It's LA's oldest Japanese confectionary and has withstood time even during the Japanese internment camp era. I would recommend this spot to anyone visiting LA and Little Tokyo.

It's amazing to see such a historical shop still thriving, and I really admire how each generation continues the tradition with so much care. The mochi here is incredibly fresh and comes in many different flavors. My personal favorites were the red bean and blueberry mochi -- both were soft, chewy, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. The price is also very affordable, around $2 per piece, which makes it easy to try several flavors at once. I'll definitely come back next time to try the plain mochi!

Galco's will forever hold a special place in my heart…read more This is the OG grocery store we would walk to in the early 80"s. When they had penny candy machines, a big taxidermy deer head and the kindest owner. He once gave me and my sibling a big paper lunch bag full of candies! I love seeing the original check out stand, the little upper office where the owner would stand and the old fridge area where it once held fruits and veggies now old school candy bars. If you grew up in highland park in the 80s, this was the local market. How I miss those days! Highland Park is so different now! Btw Galco's makes some of the best sandwiches! Also if anyone knows where to get Stoney Tangawizi please let me know!

First: I used to love this place. As a fellow small biz…read moreowner nearby, I supported and promoted this place as one of the long standing coolest stores on the Eastside. It has such a selection of candy from your childhood, and for kids, random unique gifts to keep them busy. but yesterday...all that flew out the window. I approached the sandwich counter and asked the person working (an angry woman apparently) what her favorite sandwiches are. After she took a minute to complain about how she had been making sandwiches all day and her brain is fried and she didn't really have any recommendations for me (and was seemingly annoyed at me even asking) she looked at the clock and advised that I was 2 minutes too late to order a hot sandwich. literally the 2 minutes she took to complain about her job cost me the sandwich. now, if it was my shop and a nice family came in and asked me my opinion on something and I took a minute or two to say the things that she said I would give them a sandwich and make that sandwich be the last sandwich of the day, but instead apparently my money wasn't green enough for her. She shut it down and two minutes later was out the door. she was rude, and honestly it just seemed that she didn't give an F. Today I called the store to speak with the owner and the person who answered the phone gave me the runaround. it was clear that either the workers didn't want to connect me with the owner or the owner doesn't want to hear the complaint. this place has gone downhill.

We spontaneously came across this candy store while strolling Belmont shores and decided to stop in…read morebecause I saw a sign for sour Swedish candy... and I was so excited to find out they have my favorite Swedish sour raspberry bottle candy! I've been looking for these in stores for many years since my favorite candy store closed down in NorCal! The employees were really kind to let me try a piece of candy before purchasing! Just make sure you ask them for a sample because they grab the sample for you. This is to keep the candy clean from strangers hands :) Such a nice hidden gem, especially if you're looking for any retro or Swedish sour candy.

I even found a lot of classic candy from when I was a child, like the mini mini chicles. Talk about a throwback! We found great Mexican candy as well and lots of classics like gummies and chocolates. The price is not too bad compared to other candy stores; I'd say overall we enjoyed the drive and the candy. This location has a lot of nice decor to look at, like giant bears and random paintings; like I said, a mini museum. But what makes this place great is that they hold classes. You can take a candy class here or even some baking classes where you can make your own sweet treat for about 40 bucks, I believe. I think it is a sweet deal (haha), and you get to keep all your candy you get from it. When I went, it was an hour to closing, so classes had ended. But we will be coming back for a class real soon.
