I took my mom to Dr Proano where she has lower back pain for several years. My mom had 3 times cortizone injections and the last one did work out at all. Dr. Proano recommended to perform the ablation in he lower bak L4 and L5 where the results will be better. However, the pain was much worse than before this procedure. One month later, I visited the doctor to complain about the severe pain and the suffering that my mom has been experiencing. In a cold way, the doctor stated that this ablation doesn't work on every person and obviously didn't work on her body. I short, I do not recommend this doctor at ALL. read more

There is a reason why this provider has so many bad reviews. I was really hoping to have a good experience but that did not happen. I took a relative with a debilitating spine disease here to see this doctor in order to schedule epidural shots to get some relief. She has been unable to walk or leave her home for three months and it has been excruciating. She told these things to the doctor. We were told that it might take a week or so, but insurance would authorize, and then we will be scheduled for a shot. It has been a month and guess what? No authorization! I realize this is an insurance issue, but the doctor is also supposed to advocate for patients and call regularly to escalate with insurance companies until it gets done. This doctor never did that, despite us calling many times begging for updates. Not once with this escalated. As if that's not bad enough, half the time the staff here does not pick up the phone and it goes to voicemail. As if THAT isn't bad enough, we left multiple messages asking for someone to call us back and no one did. On top of that, twice we were able to get a live person after calling 15 times in a day,, who promised they would call us back with an update. That never happened. On two separate occasions we were told we would be getting a call back and no one called us back. Now we are at the point of switching insurance and have to start all over because this provider wasted our time and strung us along for several weeks. The doctor does not care enough to advocate for patients, but according to other reviews is happy to build the insurance. Do not walk away, RUN from this place. read more

This Dr. Is very rude! I went in and talked to him about having surgery done to correct the issue, but he's not a surgeon so of course he just want to keep putting a band-aid on the issue. This doctor is the rudest, uncaring, arrogant man that I have ever met. I went in to see him because he fills pain pumps. First thing he said to me was that he won't fill my pump because someone else put it in. He knows there are no other doctors in this area that fill pumps. He went on & on about not wanting to be bothered with pumps, ect. I had brought a girlfriend with me & she was stupefied at his attitude. Whatever happened to the oath he took to help people? To add insult to injury his back office staff is exactly like him. I guess it is a "monkey see, monkey do" situation. I would not let him touch my dog! read more

It's so sad how these pain doctors are such monsters who give a run around to their patients even though they are well aware of the nature of the emergency and the need to alleviate the pain of their patients. One such pain doctor is Dr Fabian , who makes you feel so important and appears compassionate and knowledgeable.. Made me feel comfortable and sympathized w my pain and said the epidural shot would be done in 2 weeks since it's the beginning of the year and "it's slow". It's a hoax! All that ended once you leave the office .. Not only is it hard to reach his office through all those antiquated menu options , the staff is unbearably rude and arrogant (no wonder , look who they work for) I tried to reach his office repeatedly over the past few months only to be told that they have no record of my visit !! Meanwhile the doctor behind my back is hitting up my insurance company for authorizations and approvals without my consent and knowledge ! Unethical!! UPDATE-I have had 2 procedures so far with Dr. Proano and I have to take my review from a 3 star to 5+! He has diagnosed my issue and treated me in half the time most other doctors have. He works out of Manhattan beach surgical center and the staff there goes above and beyond to take care of you. The front desk is always on top of everything. Nurse Tammy and Gwen are amazing! The anesthesia team is great and everyone makes you feel so comfortable. I am so happy I found Dr Proano and his team. His nurse Linda even called me late to help me get my pain meds the night of my procedure. I would recommend him to anyone who needs pain relief without all the fluff! First visit with this doctor today, still on the fence. I waited almost an hour to see him in a cramped room. The front desk staff seemed nice and although busy did their best at running things behind the scene. He was a bit rude in the way he spoke, no eye contact, was jotting things down on his phone and interrupted almost everything I would say. However unlike most doctors I have encountered during my 20 years dealing with spine pain and being a nurse myself for 20 years, I would have to say he knows what he is talking about and gets right to the point! I came prepared with an organized medical record, was precise about describing my pain and didn't add any fluff nor did I need to be coddled in any way. So for me he is fine enough. I am not looking for a friendship or for someone to feel for me. I just want someone to fix my pain, if you do that without a smile I could care less! Also most doctors will see I'm rather young with NO other medical problems and dismiss me. This doctor did not and although I felt he was in "fast forward" with no bedside manner, I'm ok personally with that. He also said something the million other doctors have never said and that was "MRI's are not 100% and don't show us everything." I was glad to hear that, makes me feel he is open to thinking outside the box. So I will give him a chance with helping me, but then again I am not the type for being pushed around medically or being a guinea pig for a doctors ego. I believe patients need to be their own and best advocate . I will get up off an OR table if I am not comfortable so his brash personality doesn't bother me. read more

While my initial interactions with Dr. Proano were fantastic; well informed/educated, took the time to explain procedures and was reassuring. This all ended after leaving the office. During the appointment, I was informed by Dr. Proano that I would be having a back brace delivered to me in addition to receiving a call back regarding scheduling a shot. Over the next three weeks, I never received a single call back, even after confirming my phone number was correct under my account there. Despite never calling me to schedule an appointment, the doctor was apparently continuing to request additional authorizations from my insurance without my consent or permission. Over a month and a half later, I am without any assistance, no back brace, and additionally, no progress made with scheduling me for the shots that they were attempting to charge my insurance for. I saw this doctor years ago. He wasn't friendly and must have spent less than 5 minutes with me. I never felt so low after leaving his office. I was in terrible pain. I have a number of issues. He in no way helped at all. He looked at my x rays and wanted to jump into doing a spinal fusion. I took off. I figured get a second opinion. I don't think anyone should rush into a surgery. I went on to see another doctor who tried a number of things. Finally the only answer for me was a Medtronic pain pump. I can now somewhat function but will never be totally pain free as my doctor explained to me. That's how chronic pain is. It's tough to live with but my doctor has shown compassion for me which I greatly appreciate. All of us need to feel that someone out there cares enough to help us feel better. read more

This man has a clear dereliction of duty. He points fingers at other Doctors for PAIN MGMT when he is listed as one. He also bad-mouth a fellow Doctor who is much superior then him any day, any moment any time! He said he didn't agree with anything that Dr. Katrina Von Kriegenbergh did nor her methods. He said and I quote, I don't agree that a pain pump should have been installed. He said this in a nasty way! He was running way late so I thought I'd be nice to break the ice by t thanking him for being kind & helping my mom. I knew I was in trouble when he said gruffly I "don't remember her...anyway", a normal response would have been oh ok that's great....so I knew he was a crappy individual & I think all the years of being grump has worn itself on him! My mom told me later he was horrible & she still remembered his awfulness at Long Beach Memorial. My pump is internal so that instantly made me feel awful I then took my partner who is very quite so I'd have a witness on my 2nd visit. My other half didn't want to come because he thought no doctor could be like that. On the 2nd visit[which was suppose to only be a refill which his nurse Linda, who was quite rude on the 1s visit and on the phone but was ok the 2nd visit. Dr. Proano was absolutely terrible and has such an inflated self-esteem that you can't even speak to him. He said he doesn't do refills and since he didn't take care of me before....Dr. VK is in his office & within Torrance Memorial IPA so why didn't he read that I've been battling rheumatoid since 2010 with 7 failed biologics (it's never been under control due to either it didn't work or my allergies), my severe stenosis, my failed L4/L5 which required surgery to remove bone but nerve is inflamed, my complex bakers cysts that can't be removed, pancreatitis (not from drinking but meds & too narrow ducts, genetic) , RSD L ankle,(bad reconstructive surgery since 2004) and I need a knee replacement but a specialist told me my bones were porous and so it might not take but he left Torrance and I got a weirdo who removed my cap thinking I'd come back to him for a replacement & I didn't (sine 2013). So I have many and complex pain issues. Dr. Proano told me and also signaled his hands with a sweep sweep so I knew I was a lot of trouble! He said he wasn't a pill pusher & to get my meds elsewhere. I old him that all the other doctors are going to push back & say no that it pain mgmt who takes care of this. He yelled how dare you! You telling me my job? I said no shocked that he would take MY pain so personal. I asked him wasn't pain now considered a system? And that doctors who for instance removed my tumors & appendix but I would get op meds from Dr. VK so I didn't need those from my regular doctors who now in CA which has made it absolutely miserable for patients to get pain meds! I looked at my partner & he stated that I wasn't being unreasonable and he's responsible to help a person in pain. Well that just made him get angrier & when I said he's sending me to ER unnecessarily and he said to "Knock yourself Out". I asked him if he took the Hippocratic Oath & he lost it at that point! I told him I wasn't going to be his patient long but only to fill my pump before the 15th & for my pill refill. He told me to get out & yelled at Linda to get that girl out of my office. I'm 57 so I didn't appreciate that & I wouldn't have come in if he told me all of this on June 29th when I 1st saw him! I would have rolled & told Blue Shield THAT day to change doctors. He knew my regime but was incompetent! If you're in chronic pain....forget it! He'll want to push expensive nerve blocks (which didn't work on me) so he can further his greed....shame, shame, shame....I worked so hard all my life & never expected to be sick as a runner nor this type of treatment for all my issues. I have been with Dr. Proano for years he was also looking me in the face when I spoke. I felt he actually cared about me and my pain issues. In the last few visits, he won't let me tell him my issues he talks to me with his back to me. I don't feel comfortable even asking for a prescription or what else I can do. He has lost all of his bedside manners. I am in so much pain it is hard to start over. I will have to I will not go back to him. If you have serious back pain please spare yourself. Well my fellow Yelpers were right again. I was so scared to see this guy because of the reviews but desperate to get seen and helped for my back injury I took a chance. I had waited way over an our be seen my visit was only 15 minutes. Dr P seemed very professional. Told me I needed physical therapy before he could justify treating me and said he was going to prescribe me two meds. He told me to wait there and someone would come get me. His medical assistant screamed for me. Literally screamed for me so I walked to her. She proceeded to openly talk about their patient john R. Having a bypass the day before and discussed how dumb it was for him to come in. She then handed me the bottles, and then I advised her I needed my paperwork for work. She just kept looking down and said she wasn't told about that. So I went to the front desk and told them I needed it. I had to wait 40 min for that. After she screamed for me again. I took the meds the next morning and had a horrible reaction and called their office. I left a voice mail. Of course no call returned. I called three days later because of the weekend and advised the lady that answered of my bad reaction and that I needed him to return my call or just provide me something else. She told me to just take the medication and that she didn't know what else to tell me. So I told her he should call me. She told me well he may or may not call me back. - and no he did not. I love this Dr. However his front office has much to desire, they knew dr was closed the whole week of 10/7-11/19, they put me on the schedule after my procedure. Called to get a reminder, they could of put me after the above date, they didn't, they gave me the time waited until it was close to my schedule time to see him then call to reschedule me, by this time my pain return and the girl, said you know what he will be in the office, and gave me my time, i received a text reminder I put yes and the day before, my appointment they called again, now I gotta wait 2 weeks to see dr. they need to do better, they new the dr. before hand and that's not very professional and their dealing with people pain. read more

Lots of complaints about Dr. Proano and I don't get it. He did 3 epidurals for me. He carefully explained what I needed to know. He was friendly and empathetic. And best of all, my back pain went away. It's back now, but I am using a different medical group. Staff was super helpful in gathering my medical records. read more

New patient not impressed so far. Dr. Proano is okay hard to judge very straightforward lacks bed side manners. Staff is horrendous followup is terrible. Saw Dr. Proano back on 3/ 28 after an issue with his MRI had to get a new order for a CT Scan due to an issue with his pacemaker took several weeks to finally get that ordered then we had an issue with Polak Imaging not receiving the order.from his office for the scan DAT there for almost 2 hours to get someone from his office to fax over the order. Finally saw Dr. Proano on March 28th to go over results said they would call us once approved to get a shot but no call here it is over 3 weeks and still nothing. I placed a call and got transfered to his must but kept on asking me about refilling a prescription spoke to the operated again and again sent me to that same extension but every prompt kept saying invalid called again and told the operator that leaving a message was a complete joke. First time seeing Dr. Proano was back on January 17th and still no step in getting the help Dad needs. read more

I have seen Dr Proano twice now. He is without a doubt straight forward in which I am highly appreciative of. The first epidural in my upper back almost 2 years ago offered significant relief hence the reason I am back regarding my lower back. Unlike other physicians, making medical assumptions is not his practice. He is a No nonsense, strictly by the facts kind of physician. If you are looking to save a buck and omit things like an MRI, and simply want a doctor to assume your diagnosis then Dr Proano is not for you. Regarding the nurse, when in Rome, do as the Roman's. It is a high paced office in which I would fully expect and appreciate her ability to keep up with her physicians. Regarding the administration team in which I read several, and quite honestly, the majority of complaints. I did have an encounter with a young woman who had a bit of n attitude, once. However, I did not base my decision regarding the physicians ability on the mannerisms of the girl that answers the phone. In my experience with physicians throughout my life is that if you are fortunate to obtain one in which they are honest and thorough, you will receive a quicker and more detailed recovery. Dr. Proano is a pain doctor at a pain management clinic. I had a massage and the masseuse injured my sciatic nerve and I had excruciating pain for weeks before I could get his appointment approved by my insurance. I have been to other pain doctors and they were compassionate and understanding. Dr. Proano is in another class. I've never met a doctor who was so aggressive, annoying, condescending, contemptuous and arrogant. He refused to answer any of my questions and when he tried to diagnose my leg, he just grabbed it and yanked it over my head. One of the symptoms of sciatica is that you can't lift your leg without pain. He could have just asked me to show him how high I could lift my leg, but no, he jerked it up over my head and when I screamed, he said Yes, you have sciatica. He wouldn't answer any of my questions. I asked him how the injury could have happened when the masseuse pressed on the front of my hip, not anywhere near the sciatic nerve. He just shrugged his shoulders and said This stuff happens. When I told him how bad the pain was, he said I needed to get used to it. Another answer he gave to one of my questions was, That's the way it goes. Everything he said was in a condescending, contemptous tone of voice. He administered a nerve block and I was asking him questions about it, and he told me to be quiet so he could concentrate. And it wasn't a nice request. Things can be worded nicely, but he doesn't take the time to even try. His staff is just as bad. I was sitting in a wheelchair waiting for my blood pressure to go down so I could be released, and the nurse told me to jiggle my foot so it didn't get numb. I jiggled it a few times and it hurt too bad, so I stopped. She walked by and said Didn't I TELL you to keep moving your foot? I wondered if she was his daughter because the attitude was the same, arrogant and overbearing. I called to cancel the follow-up appointment I had because I would never go back. The nurse on the phone wouldn't let me cancel. She insisted I had to come in to make sure the injection was't infected. (It wasn't). I had to call twice before she would cancel the appointment and she had that same arrogant, condescending attitude. I would NEVER recommend this doctor and I will never go back, no matter how bad my pain gets. I looked him up online at another site, and he only got 2 of 5 stars. Dr Proano has been so very helpful to me in managing lower back pain. He listens to your complaints, checks for the source(s) of the problem(s), and offers options. I could hardly walk without stooping over and couldn't even get off the bed months and months after contending with a tibia fracture and torn meniscus, and had ceased walking and doing other forms of exercise because of the pain. Thinking I just had to live with it I almost gave up on any form of treatment, but when I found him he knew what would make a difference and it certainly has. Three epidurals later and I am walking everywhere, using my fitbit to track 10,000 steps per day and performing work that would've been out of the question before. Now my neck is being treated so I won't have to clench my jaw in pain anymore. Went to Dr. Proano in September 2016, for a hip cortisone shot, came away with a steriod flare and a staph infection, which as of this date, am still suffering from. My word!! He is supposed to be pain management in speciality. I know he is is not God, so he couldn't solve everyone's issues and pain. But it would help if he would not make unnecessary comments. For example: Dr: what's your pain level now?" me: 7-8 dr: really? Why are you here? Or are you really hurting as much as you say you are?" Me: (speechless)!! Insulted, in pain, insulted, in pain!! And he had that disgusted look on his face. I don't know why I allowed that! I cried for two reasons. Pain and anger! I still came to him after that because I needed to feel better. So I just shrugged his ill mannered ways. He saw me twice for epidural for my back L-4 L-5. Saw me after a week or so. Asked how I was doing and I said I was still in pain. His response " you are a challenge for me. Nothing else I can do. I don't think your problem is your back. It could be your bed, your chair. I'm not giving you a third epidural. He gave me a brochure on how to do home therapies and dismissed me and see him as needed. That was the end of it. I had MRI 's showing abnormal findings and I was in so much pain, I cried and took his insults towards me as if I needed it. No other recommendations no nothing. I to this day am in pain. I'm afraid to go and see another pain specialist and be dismissed again! He left a scar on me I am starting to lose faith!! read more

I have been seeing Dr. Proano for my back pain since January 2015. I've had a few injections for my back without any complications or problems. Let me preface my remarks; I am no stranger to medical issues. I have battled non-hodgekins lymphoma since 1989. I have been on chemotherapy 4 times. I have had 2 surgeries. I received care from at least a dozen oncologists, hematologists, surgeons and other providers. During that time, I have NEVER been subjected to the uncaring, unprofessional and just plain rude treatment I received from him. On my first visit to his office, I saw him ONE HOUR after my appointment time. On my second visit, to receive an epidural, it was over 45 minutes. No one explained or apologized for the delays. After my epidural, I tried to talk with him about my pain medication. I was concerned about refilling the prescription, as I had trouble in the past coordinating between his office and my pharmacist. (the only pharmacy on Catalina Island, as I explained to him during my 1st visit) he than said I had "a 10 day supply (his words) and I shouldn't worry. I pointed out that the prescription was for 30 pills, at 4 per day, which would be a 7.5 day supply. He said "I don't want to argue with you" and became more agitated. The last thing he said to me was "my medical license is more important than your pain" While I am sure his statement is correct vis a vis HIS priorities, it is a horrible thing to say to a patient still face down on the table as the nurse cleans me up. He then stormed out of the room. I was flabbergasted he would leave me in such a state. I received NO POST PROCEDURE INSTRUCTIONS. As such, that evening I applied a heat pad for the pain, not knowing that was the worst thing to do. I spent the night sleepless in excruciating pain. I also wanted to ask him if I should continue taking the anti-inflamatory prescribed by the Doctor referring me to him. I called his office back a few times and was unable to get a definitive answer. Each time I asked for an answer, I was told I would be called back with one. I am still waiting. read more
