The workers here are such hard workers. I've been here numerous times and especially since the covid-19 pandemic for face masks materials. I've scheduled my appointments and showed up on time. I've had my list ready gave it to the young guy and he's had all the things ready up front really quickly. I've even bought online and that takes a while to get the order ready because of this pandemic and they've had a lot of online orders but they communicate well when something is out of stock, needing another option and even when to pick up. read more

Being a quilter, I am always on the lookout for a quilt store. Fabric Mart has a very large selection of Hawaiian cotton fabrics as well as cotton/poly blends. They have lots of other types of fabric on-hand, too. Upstairs is where the "traditional" quilting fabric (batiks, novelty, fleece, etc) are kept. It was my first time here and I was fortunate enough to have my lunch buddy show me the ropes. She is a pro and knew this place like the back of her hand! It was nice that she was able to explain pros and cons about the different fabrics as we walked around. I should have read reviews before coming but I didn't have time and shame on me. Drove right past the parking lot and took me 3 attempts to actually park in their private lot. The owner didn't like that I parked right in front of the store. Make sure to park in their private lot! They have lots of spaces. There are so many types of fabrics that it's overwhelming as you enter. They even have a second floor and the discounted fabrics are located here. We looked around the store and after narrowing down options, we found our fabric! You do need to bring the roll to the counter. The employees will ask how much fabric you want and they cut the roll for you. You can have the fabric folded or rolled to go. Take the cut fabric to the cashier to pay (they accept cash and credit). Around the register is different types of needles and thread. Great place to pick up materials for a DIY project! read more

Long overdue review. This is kind of the only game in town as far as having a big selection of fabrics and sewing supplies on hand. The only other place I can compare it to would be Wal-Mart's little fabric/craft section and so for that, yeah the prices are a tad higher AND you're not guaranteed that Wal-Mart will have what you need on hand. For that Fabric Mart is very consistent and has it all...so much so that if you're not a huge crafter/sewer, coming into here one might be overwhelmed! It's "organized" as best as it can be I assume, as I've never had a problem with finding what I needed or getting help. If you need to find specialty fabric and items for a sewing project, I'd definitely come down here if you're not looking to waste time or need it sooner than later. Pros: -Lots of selection on hand -Competitve pricing -Private parking lot, easy to park, hardly ever full. Cons: -It's helpful to know what you need coz I don't think you could blindly walk in here and find it on your own first try. My wife comes here A LOT. For some reason, she always needs fabric. She teaches art, so she always needs fabric for costumes, backgrounds, banners, flags, bags, stage props, etc. Besides these projects for school, she needs fabric to make pillowcases for our daughters, curtains for their playhouse, capes for them to play in, Halloween costumes, etc. At one point, she was coming here so often that she was mistaken (more than once) for one of the workers (she's also Filipino). Ha. In any case, Fabric Mart has 2 floors of every kind of fabric for any project you could possibly have. Character prints for our daughters (Hello Kitty, Dora, Mickey Mouse, etc.). Upholstery fabric. Denim. Muslin. Hawaiian Print. Fancy stuff. Furry Stuff. Etc. They also have clothing patterns, pillow forms, stuffing, needles, threads, etc. It's a little tricky to get to because you can only turn in to their parking lot if you're traveling East on Kalakaua (heading towards Waikiki). This place has almost any Hawaiian print you want at pretty reasonable prices, however, I see they don't include any customer service link which is very unusual for an online business. If you are unable to visit in person you have to wing it when ordering online, regarding color and weight of a fabric as it states on each page that 'image may not be same as original fabric' or some such phrase, their website though is very well done and you can find 1000's of Island prints, Hawaiian products and notions. Quick tips: The parking lot is BEFORE you see the store, so be sure you turn into the open lot next to the green building! You have to actually grab the roll of fabric you want and take it to the register. If there is a material/fabric you want, but the roll is too thick/big, just go to the front and ask for help. Especially if it's upstairs, they can cut it for you on a counter up there. So the story is, I bought a really crappy car about a month ago. Interior is ripped to shreds. I called up a couple upholstery shops I found on Yelp and was basically quoted an average of 300+ to redo the headliner w/ sunroof. The pricing was the turning point for me. This was a project I took on with my brother. The fabric to redo my whole headliner came out to less than $30 which was 10% of what it would've cost to have it done professionally (automotive fabric can be found upstairs). They price the fabric by the yard, but that doesn't mean you can't take 1 or 2 feet of fabric. Just ask and they'll handle it for you. Do not expect people on the floor to help you right away. If you need help, it's best to walk to the front and find someone at the counter. I did have to knock off a star because it was my first time walking into a fabric store and it really was hard for me to find someone to help me. So I ended up going twice after watching and learning from people who seemed like regulars at the store. I'll definitely come back for some more leather if/when I can figure out a way to take off my door panel. read more

I intended to visit several fabric stores in Honolulu, but didn't get past this one. Part of that was scheduling issues, and part was because they had such a large selection of tropical fabrics that there was no need to go elsewhere. Visitors to Honolulu: there is no need to take a cab from downtown Waikiki. The number 2 bus runs along Kuhio to Kalakaua at Kanunu where the store is. It's fewer than ten stops from many of the main hotels along Kuhio. It's $5.50 for a day bus pass (exact change only). The store has two floors. Upstairs were quilting cottons, children's fabrics, licensed cottons, fleeces and home décor items. The main floor is mostly cotton and cotton/poly wovens. Table 2 has a very small selection of solid colour lycra; they should consider stocking tropical print lycras. The back wall has heavier weight cottons and a few cordura options. There are Asian print silks near the door. Prices range from $4 for cotton/poly to $8-9 for for cottons up to $13 for some of the silks. Most of the prices are very reasonable. You'll want to keep track of the prices and quantities of your selections, because they don't write them up as they are cut. Allot at least an hour or two. There is limited staff, so having the fabric cut takes time, especially if they need to retrieve it from the floor. read more

Customer service sucks there. If your planning on going and not sure what you want to buy you are wasting your time. There is only one person who helps the customers while only having 2 people every 20 mins with 5 employees. I suggest looking on there website or go to kaneohe fabric mart for great customer service. I have to shout out Venus give her 5 stars from the kalakaua fabric mart because she helped me and along with the other customer find what we need. Stopped by today to pick up some fabric and sewing supplies as my Singer Sewing machine's needle struck one one my other needles and broke. I wanted to look for extra bobbins, fabric for my kitchen chairs and singer brand accessories. However they were all out. I ended up finding a brown pleather fabric that could be used for my dining table chairs but I had also wanted the maroon colored pleather... ended up not getting the maroon as there were streaks (like a scratch) coming from the fabric. I kept unrolling it a bit more to see if it's only the outside part of the fabric. But it kept going on. The staff lady said it was a part of the pattern but I think it's a defective fabric . Was able to pick up some white sewing thread and 1 yard of brown pleather fabric to sample the shade , and 1 yard of a Japanese cat fabric to make face masks. At the end during the transaction, the lady forgot to ring up my other 2 items (the pleather and thread) and I had ended up having to do a transaction twice. Hoping for a better turn out next time when they have more stuff in stock (hopefully!*) and for better awareness and help. The only con is that I just wish that there were more modern selections and more Cotton knit variety. There's barely black cotton knit and no selection for French terry fabric. I placed an order online for a spool of elastic there was no limit. They took my order, charged my card sent me a confirmation, I went to the store and I was told I had to be notified to pick it up and now there is a limit. About two weeks later still no notification. At about three weeks they cancelled my order and told me I could reorder on May 5th. Meanwhile I was able to make an appointment to go in to the store. That appointment was yesterday for 20 minutes. No thread in the colors I wanted, black, white, or cream, no rolling cutters, no bias tape maker . I found solid fabrics some were still wrapped and marked $2.97. When it was time to cut the fabric and pay I was informed THAT is NOT the price it's $5.99. I said that's more than double what the marked bolt price is and she said "it's shipping because we buy a lot." If they purchase in bulk, shipping should less. Because I was at the time limit of being escorted out, I paid the price but it seems there is price gouging going on. In the future I will order from the mainland rather than be price gouged by a local business. I am all for supporting local but draw a line when there is price gouging being practiced. Today I went to this fabric mart to buy fabric to make scrunchies for the first time. It's my first time in this store so I'm just taking my time roaming and feeling the fabric. None of the workers were offering help except this one lady when I came up to her and asked her prices on some fabric. What made me really mad was what happened when I went to the counter where they cut the fabric and we pay for it. This worker that was cutting my fabric was speaking in her native tongue to the other worker and didn't know I understood that language too. So I'm standing there while she talking about me to her coworker and she was complaining about me. First of all, I wasn't even a difficult customer to deal with because the only interaction I had with the workers was around the part when I was paying. I was so angry after I left the store because that lady was so rude and thought she could hide what she said because she thought I couldn't understand the language. Honestly they have a really poor selection. Most of what they have is Hawaiian print alongside some undesirable patterns straight out of your grandmas box of fabric she doesn't use because it's so ugly. They have very few selections for clothing making. I couldn't find a single good quality stretchy black fabric. While we're on that, I couldn't find much black at all! Every fabric store I've ever been to had a large selection of greyscale. They have almost none!! The did not have a single piece of black lace. I'm really disappointed in their selection. When you're a cosplayer, you frequent just about every fabric and craft store in existence on this island and let me tell you, Fabric Mart is one of the best. It seems much smaller than the Fabric Mart in Aiea, I'll admit that, but I was able to find everything I was looking for no less! The ladies that work here are so cute and friendly btw. Ask one of them if you need help looking for a certain type of fabric because you might think you're looking for bridal satin when all you really need is standard. I found some items I needed for a costume here: two-inch olive drab webbing and white plastic buckles. I was about to leave after looking around for the webbing when I noticed tons of different colored webbing behind the cashier. The staff is helpful and courteous and the prices were reasonable. If I ever need to buy fabric for clothing or a costume I would check here first. This location has a lot of tropic fabric that could be made into aloha wear or hula attire. read more

An attractive young woman approached the clerk at the department store's fabric counter. "I would like to purchase some of this material for a new outfit. How much does it cost?" she asked. "Only one kiss per yard," the male clerk replied smugly. "That's fine," she replied. "I'll take six yards." With great expectation written all over his face, the clerk quickly measured out the fabric, wrapped it, then held it out teasingly. The young woman snatched the package from his hand, pointed to the little old man standing next to her, and said with a grin, "Grandpa will pay the bill." Ok by now you must be thinking which one am I? No I am not the attractive woman, nor am I the department store clerk (although that's something I might have said)... Well that leaves the grandpa and sorry I am not that person either. I was just the guy walking into Fabric Mart for the first time. My wife and I were looking for some felt and trust me this place has a bunch of felt but it is big and stuffed to the walls with every fabric known to man. Instead of trying to play hide and seek with the felt as we didn't know where to start looking, we asked a lady if they had any. She said it's upstairs. Being that it was our first time there it took us a little while to find the stairs. That's when we had the next challenge of finding out how to get upstairs?!?!?! One would think that she would of showed us, but oh no, we were left to fend for ourselves. It was a little tricky as we were in the back of the store and the entrance was to the wall facing the front of the store and had people blocking the aisle so we had to walk through the maze of fabric to go upstairs. Once upstairs and a little digging, we found the felt (huge selection) and picked the color we wanted. We looked everywhere and didn't see one employee upstairs. Again, you would of thought the employee we asked if they had felt in the first place would of came upstairs and showed us and then assisted us in cutting the material but that wasn't the case. Had to go back downstairs to ask for some assistance only to hear her say nothing as if I interrupted her life from talking to her fellow co-worker. When she came upstairs she was following another couple and helped them first. I was like ah ok... I guess maybe they don't like selling felt or something. I've gone to Fabric Mart 50+ times looking for fabric for special events and material for costumes. They've got a really great selection and pricing is decent. The great thing is that if they don't have enough yardage for you (I was ordering 100-200 yards at a time), they can always call their other store in Pearl City and have it delivered to the Honolulu store the next day. I've gotten everything from chiffon and sequin material for under the sea themes to stretchy spandex for projection work to glittery fabric for shiny disco balls. You name it. I've bought it! Lots of tourists come to Fabric Mart from Waikiki looking for hawaiian print fabric, which they have tons of! Lots of women from Japan looking to buy fabric for pa'u skirts and costumes for their halaus back home. FYI hula is now one of the largest after school past times in Japan. Weird but true. If you've got a GE license be sure to bring it and ask to be tax exempt. Or if you are buying a whole roll of fabric, usually 50 yards, get 10% off. You'll have to ask them for the discount though because they won't tell you about it. Free parking but make sure you don't go during traffic time (330 pm-600 pm) or you'll get stuck in the mess heading towards and out of Waikiki. read more

Bought rolls of ribbon here for 99 cents. Another store charged me more than $5 for the same (or less?) amount. I think this is the cheapest place for fabric that I know of. It beats Walmart's prices and selection by far. There's lots of "Hawaiian print" (maybe I'd better watch out what I call "Hawaiian" - Kimo might get mad! Hawaiian's didn't wear this kind of print, and definitely didn't wear cotton...) which I'm not really into, but if YOU are, this is the place to go! I wish they had better parking and more solid colors/ less busy prints. But hey, 4.5 stars overall. Wedding planning: Go here if you need fabric, ribbon, or that ribbon/lace/elastic stuff for garters. Why spend $12+ for a garter when you can pay less than $5 for the materials & glue/stitch it together? I'm buying ribbon and fabric for the flower girls' baskets because I haven't found any ready-made baskets that I like. They're all so gaudy with ugly bling or lace attached and over-priced. $20+ for a flowergirl basket?! Come on...
