In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes as well as other businesses throughout O'ahu's Windward side (east shore of the island) after a recent acquisition of an investment/private-use property, the helpful Yelp app led me to Hawaiian Fabric as a potential place to find something to tie newly-installed curtains. Whenever the windows were open to allow for the cool tradewinds in, the curtains uncontrollably flapped and whipped around which eventually got annoying and distracting. After doing my research on all of the fabric stores in the Honolulu area that I could find on Yelp, I chose Hawaiian fabrics in the Kapahulu neighborhood, somewhere near the Rainbow Drive-In. It's a very small warehouse-style location. But it's filled with a lot a lot of beautiful and quality Hawaiian-style cottons. It's run by the owner, Dave, and he's extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. Encouraging you to order by mail if you're visiting from the mainland. But being there is certainly worth the visit. Prices are very reasonable. I bought a few things to use in my slow stitching project while I was visiting and loved having the feel of the quality fabric in my hands. Slow stitching doesn't require larges quantities of fabric. It's small "handwork," but Dave was just as happy cutting me 1/3 yd lengths (of which I bought a few) than if I was buying 20 yards. Very obliging and amenable. He also explained that all the fabric stores on the island cooperate with each other in that each sort of specializes in one type of Hawaiian fabric. One in Asian themes, one in children's themes, etc. So they are happy to recommend one to the other. That's great! Quilters will love it this place. Sew-people will love it for shirt motifs. This is one of those little hidden gems in the Kapahulu area. Hence their name "Hawaiian Fabric" they stock a ton of Hawaiian style fabric. If you are a serious quilter or garment maker, you will appreciate this small shop with a carefully curated collection of printed fabrics designed in Honolulu & printed in Japan, Korea or Indonesia. What a relief to not have an allergic reaction to a fabric store! I bought one piece of cotton & one piece of cotton barkcloth while on a holiday (shop is totally walkable from Waikiki, located in the Kapahulu neighbourhood but off the main drag not far from Bailey's Aloha Shirts). I washed & dried these two pieces & they came out of the dryer virtually wrinkle free, so very satisfied with the quality at such a reasonable price, even with conversion to Canadian dollars. Had no idea what my Mom needed other than she sent me for an errand to bring back "squares" for her quilt project. Cutest place. Organized. Clean. Dave was super helpful, patient, knowledgeable and accommodating. I FT my Mom and showed her the shop and options Dave and I picked out for her. He was spot on with the choices he recommended. Since I don't have a clue with quilting, Dave listened to my Mom's questions, helped with measurements, etc. My daughter wanted to pick up additional squares for a quilt and Dave was so kind to let her pick any fabric and cut them down to size. This store specializes in and almost exclusively carries Hawaiian prints. They carry a large assortment of prints in a large selection of colours. I had trouble deciding which fabrics I wanted so I purchased a bunch and will decide what to do with it later. David, the store owner was friendly, helpful, and patient. The store is set back in a corner of a small parking lot, so look for the sign saying "Fabric" on the east side of Martha street. The store is located in a slightly sketchy-looking area, but when you enter the store, everything is neat, clean, and well organized. David gave me 10% discount for finding him on Yelp which was a bonus, since fabric was already reasonably priced. I left a happy customer, excited for the projects to come. I am a quilter and have many ggrandchildren, so was anxious to replace my dwindled stash of hawaiian fabric while visiting my brother, so was impressed when I saw this shop on Yelp. It was very difficult to find because it is a tiny shop back off the street. Well it was all i expected although was low on stock, still I loaded up what I could. The owner was super nice and helpful, gave me his card with the email site I could order from in the future and he would have it mailed. I made sure my family on the island was made aware of this shop, so they could also shop there. I now live in Oregon and discovered he had lived there before, so we reminisced. If you are a quilter, you will definitely want to stop here. There are lots of pre-cut fat quarters to choose from. My husband ordered a custom made shirt. They'll also make scrubs and some other things from fabric of your choice (shirt sizes run large). He is completely happy with the excellent workmanship and quick delivery!
