I am a new resident of Carlsbad and got an offer in the mail for a free haircut with Kelsey, so I decided to check it out. Her great reviews speak volumes. She has her own bungalow in the back with Windows looking into palm trees. What could be better? She is warm and considerate. Offered me coffee or tea, let me choose the music, and asked questions at the right times to make sure I was comfortable. I went in having no clue what I wanted. Her initial consultation was great and I left my hair in her capable hands. Only qualms: I didn't love the shape of my hair after the blow dry, but that's an easy fix. My hair is so healthy and happy that an old friend from high school liked my Facebook pics enough to write me and find out what shampoo I use. High school girl, it's not the shampoo- it's James!!! I have followed James Mendoza across town, to any salon I can get an appointment with him in. Fabrika Monet is his own studio, which means he now controls the ambiance and the music, making it a 5star experience on top of the gorgeous haircuts. James gives excellent haircuts and color, and won't do something just for a few bucks, which as we all know is sadly *not* the case everywhere. (Example: he has told me he will drive over and personally intervene if I ever try to take my naturally black hair blonde, because it will fry it). He listens to what you want, and makes it happen... unless you are overly inspired by a Shakira concert (see "I want to go blonde" comment, above). He gave my sister her dream hairdo for her wedding, he's the only person my mom has let touch her hair since the 80's, and I'm batting 1000 on my many referrals to him. Immediately walking in to his salon and experiencing the rustic yet modern environment he has created for his craft you can tell he is authentic, extremely creative, and cares deeply for his work. I have gone to James for the past 4+ years. My hair is curly and wavy but in a way that is completely impossible to deal with without styling it. I am not one of those girls who can just walk out of the door with wet hair without looking like a ragamuffin. James has consistently given me a hairstyle (and tips on how to style it) that gets me stopped in the street by strangers who give me amazing compliments and who are dying to know where I go to get my hair styled. I had been searching for the perfect hairstylist for a long time until I met James Mendoza. He was referred to me by a few coworkers who always came back with fabulous cuts and styles. After my first appointment with James, I haven't look back since! The salon is located in a cute little cottage and has the feeling of tranquility, which is such a relief after a long hard day at work. For the past 10 years I have been searching for the perfect place to have my hair done. I know what you're thinking, "that long...really??"...but you see, I have naturally curly hair that is more temperamental then the current San Diego weather patterns, so finding a place and hair stylist who could master these tendrils was no minor feat. I had finally accepted the fact that my hair would have to remain long forever and that I could never do anything fun with it - but all of that changed when I was recommended Fabrika Monet by a friend. First, I can't imagine having your hair cut in a more perfect setting. You pull up to a beach cottage style house and if the first thought that crosses your mind is "am I in the right place?" well you are! Each stylist works out of their own little bungalow in the back. So there's no mass gathering at the shampoo stations, loud people screaming at one another, or constant sound of hair dryers. All of this creates such a calm and peaceful setting - it should be no surprise though, that a salon who puts this much thought and care into how and where you get your hair cut is more than capable of doing such amazing things with your hair! Niki is a hair architect. I've never had someone cut my hair put so much time, effort, and thought into each layer she's cutting. She thinks before she snips and it shows. She not only listens to you and what you want- she also takes into account your style, the condition of your hair, what kind of day to day maintenance you like to manage, and most importantly what will fit you. If you think you'd like your hair a certain way, she isn't afraid to be honest with you if it won't work with your hair (like I wanted fringe bangs with curls-really?? What was I thinking?!). I think this is extremely important because often times when you're at a salon, the stylist just seems to say yes to everything and you risk walking out looking like a poodle. Niki also isn't afraid to be a little daring with you. I've never had so much fun taking my hair that was almost past my ribs, to my collar bone, and then Niki (who is so incredibility sweet) suggested if I wanted to do it, we go shorter - so we did and it came out AMAZING! I sat down and told her to do what she thought was best and I don't think I've ever received so many compliments about my cut, length, and people freak out about the layers. So...if you're looking for an amazing experience and to have your hair done by absolute geniuses then Fabrika Monet is the place for you. read more

I am not a fan of salons. I am in the water or on trails everyday so my hair is thrashed and I get tired of hearing the inevitable sigh from a stylist when they see my bleached locks. I came to Fabrika Monet on the recommendation of a friend, to see Chelsea. I am so glad I listened to her. This is not like any salon I've ever been to. You think you're driving up to a cottage in the Leucadia only to find that there are a handful of tiny bungalows in the backyard, and each bungalow is a stylist's personal space. Chelsea's is an open bungalow that makes me feel like I'm on vacation in some tropical place. Rather than hearing 10 hairdryers blowing and inane conversation taking place next to me like in a regular salon, I see banana palms, hear birds chirping, and I feel the ocean breeze blowing in through the open door and the windows. Space aside, Chelsea is a perfectionist who wants to make sure that her vision and yours are on the same page. And, she is very sweet. This might be the first time where I can actually say that I have a "stylist". read more

If I could rate James with a 6 star rating I would. He is awesome and he really knows hair! I was referred to him by a friend who has the same hair type as me (fine hair) and by the looks of her haircut you wouldn't even know it. My experience with James has always been a positive one he cuts and shapes my hair to look fuller and thicker and I appreciate that he uses all natural products that are not harmful to your hair. Since I switched to James I have gotten more compliments on my hair style than I ever have. My friends comment that it's the best haircut they've ever seen on me. I also go to James for my color and am pleased with his coloring skills. He uses hair coloring products that don't dry, burn or make your scalp feel itchy. My long time friend has started going to him as well and she has curly hair. She is also a BIG fan of him like me. I could go on and on about James and his hair skills, but I will finish my review by saying if you are looking to switch hair stylist and am not sure who to see I would say give James a try you won't regret it!!!!! read more
