This business deserves 0 stars. My experience with Emily & Michelle (the studio manager) was similar to the other 1 star reviews you will see on this page. They were by far the most unprofessional and disrespectful vendor I encountered during all of my wedding research. The biggest pain point was unresponsiveness which was consistently bad from day 1. It was silence for days despite multiple follow ups, even when we got to the month of the wedding. Whenever I did receive an overdue response, they were unapologetic and I might even say rude. Because of the concerns with communication, my planner kept trying to dissuade me from hiring Emily and I held out until the very last moment hoping to find another HMU artist. However, we were close to my wedding date and even with my planner's help, I wasn't able to find an alternative. So I reluctantly signed the contract a few days before the wedding and transferred a $1600 deposit. That's when I came across the reviews on this page about the no shows. That was the (much delayed) final straw, and coincidentally a HMU artist I had reached out to months prior reached out to say she was available for my wedding. So I notified Emily that evening asking if she would consider refunding any part of my deposit. Granted, she has no legal obligation to do so but it had been less than 24 hrs since I had sent her the deposit (in other words, less than 24 hrs that she held my wedding date which means no lost business for her). No response from her. She kept my $1600. Even with forfeiting the deposit, I decided to switch my HMU artist and 1000% believe I made the right decision. If I hadn't, I would have continued to stress about whether she would show up on my wedding day, and even if she had, I'm not sure how the experience would have gone. For example, if I wanted an adjustment to my hair or make up, would she have been accommodating? Shame on me for ever signing with Emily against my better judgement! I never write reviews but felt compelled to share this experience. I don't recommend her for any future brides. read more

This is only a review for the responsiveness of Emily/Michelle. 5 weeks before my wedding, I was scrambling to find a HMUA. I called Emily and she picked up and I was so excited she was available for my date, she went through questions I had and she said she had trial availability for later that month. After that, I followed up over text and email to confirm a trial and she was completely unresponsive. I saw her IG account was posting updates so I know she was still active online. Later my wedding planner reached out, and again she replied right away saying she was available and then ghosted him. Her behavior was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful, as we wasted time waiting for her, when it would be easy for her just to say she is not available or does not have capacity. Finding a makeup artist was one of the to-do's I struggled with the most. Everything about it is subjective, every face is unique and no amount of looking at portfolios would tell me how an artist would make ME look. What one artist could do for another person would be totally different for me so I was very cautious. I knew I wanted a fresh, natural but emphasized look. I wanted my nicest features enhanced and essentially still look like myself but on a very good day. I feel very fortunate to have found Emily. After thoroughly browsing her portfolio, I saw some brides who share similar features with me so I felt encouraged to inquire. All of the communication was done by email but I never felt that it was lacking as Michelle, her studio manager, replies so so fast and was transparent with all information. I booked a trial a week before my wedding at Emily's studio. She is so sweet and very talented! I showed her some photos of what I wanted and she was great about interpreting my preferences. She gave me a ton of input on what worked/didn't work and how to achieve the look I wanted. We tried a few options on my eyes and hair styles and thanks to the trial were able to hone in on a look. I felt very at ease. I wore the look all day for my engagement photos and it aged very well. On the day of, Emily and Amy arrived early and got right to work. Amy worked on my bridesmaids and gave them a fresh, natural look and fun curls. They all looked lovely - Amy was able to pull it off with no problem. Emily worked on my mom and I. She made the corrections and made me look beautiful, glowy and fresh. Even my bridal updo was stunning and completed that soft, feminine look I was going for. The makeup also aged very well and survived despite wind, drizzle, dancing, food and lots of happy tears. Really happy I booked Emily and I highly recommend her. I booked her for my large party of 8 bridesmaids, 2 mothers, a flower girl and myself. I scheduled my trial for the same day as my engagement shoot, and first met Emily when I went to her studio for my trial. She offered me wine and I had SO much fun - we talked about anything and everything, it was like chatting with an old friend. I was sad when it was over because I didn't want to leave. I couldn't be more pleased with how my hair and makeup turned out! Emily is truly so talented and had great instincts for not only what suited my features but also made me most comfortable. I didn't know about Faces by Emily until I saw my friend's makeup and thought it was amazing. Thereafter, I knew I would want to book her for my banquet. My first of numerous attempts resulted in me leaving a voicemail. Days later, I still hadn't received a response but was successfully able to find a secondary contact number. Several more days passed and no response so I left yet another voicemail. I continued calling throughout the day with no answer or response. Finally, my last voicemail asked them to get back to me whether they had availability or not; I just wanted to know whether I should move on or not. Still no answer. After tens of dozens of calls throughout the week, I finally reached Michelle, who said a senior artist was available on my wedding day. Great! I asked her to send over pricing and was promised it would be sent within 5 minutes. It came hours later and I received Emily's pricing, not senior artist pricing. I then contacted Michelle again, who finally sent over the correct information. Since communication didn't seem to be their forte, I asked what was the best way to reach them and Michelle said texting. On Sunday, I said I wanted to sign with one of the senior artists and never received any text back. It's now Tuesday. I don't feel any bride should have to chase after a MUA like this. There are so many other components of wedding planning that are stressful and this shouldn't be one of them. I'm curious as to whether or not my inquiry has been overshadowed by brides with larger wedding parties because an acquaintance reached out and said she always received prompt responses. Either way, I'm disappointed in my experience with Faces by Emily and hope that it's more successful for other brides out there. Good luck. I was so fortunate to be able to book Emily and her team just 2.5 weeks before my wedding. She really took the time to listen to what I was looking for and helped me to realize my wedding vision! The trial was a blast, I felt like I was chatting with a friend! She tried multiple hair and makeup styles on me so that we could hone in on what I liked the most! Emily really delivered - my hair and makeup was STUNNING and I have gotten non-stop compliments about it! Emily and her team book 30 minutes for each service for bridal party members (1 hour for hair and makeup per bridesmaid) which seemed crazy fast to me, but her team can really pull together a gorgeous look in that time! Where do I even begin... Emily is such an amazing make up artist and she is the sweetest person too. When I first met Emily during our consultation meeting, she was really nice and down to earth. I did a little research on her work prior to reaching out and after meeting her for the first time, I knew she was the one I want to hire to do my hair and make up for my wedding. I wanted someone not only who has talent, but someone I was able to work with, someone who also listens to my opinions and ideas, and someone who simply I can click with during the makeup session. I met with her again when she did her trial hair and makeup for my engagement shoot. I think the whole session took about 2 hours but it felt like half hour. The whole time we were chatting away and laughing over the craziest stories. Keep in mind, this was at like 6 in the morning and she was still full on energy. She did an amazing job on my hair and makeup for both engagement and wedding sessions. I love how she was able to add hair extensions to make me hair look fuller and longer. Emily is AMAZING! My wedding was on August 30th, 2014 in San Jose/Cupertino. I live and work in Boston so it was quite difficult planning a wedding from across the country. I came across Emily on Instagram and was immediately impressed with her work. She was so easy to contact and was quick to respond to any questions I had. When I planned a trip back to Cali in May, I texted Emily for a trial appointment. She was able to see me right away. At the trial, I told Emily I wanted to go for a natural but glam look with a loose side bun updo. Since I am having a morning tea ceremony where I will be wearing the traditional headpiece with my ao dai, I wasn't sure if the loose side bun would work. Emily was able to give me some advice and instructions to give to the place where I ordered the headpiece so that it would be easier for us to achieve the look that I want. When Emily was done with me, I was completely sold! She did so well matching my skin tone and did an amazing job with my eyes. On the day of the wedding Emily and her two assistants arrived promptly at 5am to do hair and makeup for myself, my mom, and my 4 bridesmaids. She was very easy going, talkative, and kept the whole bridal party relaxed. She even stopped to make sure I grabbed something to eat in case I didn't get to eat the rest of the day! My makeup and hair looked absolutely gorgeous! The contouring and eyes turned out even better than what she had done for me during our trial. Emily came to my reception location an hour before the guests started arriving to touch up my make up so that it's a little bit darker and also fixed my hair to make sure it stayed put for the rest of the night. She did an amazing job with it because I have A LOT of hair and my side bun stayed put without a budge even after all the dancing and partying. Every single guest commented on how gorgeous I looked and kept complimenting my make up artist for doing such a fantastic job. This is my 2nd Yelp review and I wanted to write and rave about Faces by Emily. I met Emily when I was looking for someone to do my bridal hair and makeup in June 2013. Prior to meeting her, she was very good at responding quickly to emails and my questions. I decided it'd be best to do a makeup trial with Emily before the wedding, just to meet her and get to know each other's styles. We had our trial session at her in-home studio prior to our engagement photo session. I was so impressed by Emily's talent and attention to detail. You can tell she is good at what she does and also loves her work. She was very sweet, easy to talk to, and has experience beyond her years. She's one of those artists you know who will go far in life. In addition to bridal hair/makeup, she also does work on fashion shoots. Pretty impressive. Prior to this, I had experience with other hair/makeup artists when I was part of two other weddings. Those artists showed up late and everything felt extremely rushed. Emily, on the other hand, was punctual and did not make you feel hurried. She even played great music on her iPhone to make us feel more relaxed. I was very satisfied with my hair and makeup for both the trial session and on my wedding day. I chose the best and Emily did not disappoint. I booked her several months in advance and also had her find two other artists to do hair/makeup for my bridesmaids. It was a very positive experience and everyone looked great! I definitely recommend a trial session with Emily before your big day, just so you can feel more relaxed since you've already met and she knows your style. Emily is probably hands down one of the best make up artists in the Bay Area if not California. She is very accommodating and flexible. My friend had asked to do a photoshoot (Sept 2012) of me and Emily was able to do my hair and make up even though she had plans the same night. Besides her flexibility, she is so talented. I didn't know what I wanted for hair or make up and she was able to create a look after she saw my outfit. I have a lot of hair, but she managed to create 2 looks with it (one updo and one down). Her work is amazing and her airbrushing skills are fantastic. I didn't look cakey nor did the make up feel heavy. (This is subjective because to a person who never wears makeup it could feel like a pound, but everyone needs to understand that in order for make up to show up in photos, you will be wearing a lot of makeup even if you're trying to achieve the "natural" look. The flash will always wash you out). She's also quick and precise. She fixed my eyebrows too! one was thinner than the other. She also has her own line of hair extensions so if you have thin hair, she has solutions. Emily is VERY TALENTED! Believe me, I don't say that about anyone. I am an overseas bride from Asia, so I've had my make up and hair done by many MUAs in Hong Kong and Taiwan for my engagement session, pre-wedding session and numerous weddings as a bridesmaid. It's true that most make up artists will do an okay job, but Emily's work is definitely NOT average. She doesn't do cookie-cutter type of bridal make up and hair. She knows how to highlight your best features and has her ways to hide/correct your flaws. She also listens and doesn't force you to sport a look you don't like. She's also a very sweet and nice girl to work with. I had a lot of fun chatting with her at our trial session and on the wedding day. She did an awesome job for the trial; I remember leaving her studio feeling like a million buck. On the wedding day, I had to change one of the looks we previously agreed at the trial since I couldn't find the right accessories for the hair. She looked at the new accessories I got and suggested a different hairstyle to go with it. I trusted her and let her work her magic. Emily is such a fantastic makeup/hair artist to work with. She came in to do my look for a model photoshoot, and oh my goodness, she made this tired gal into a gorgeous superstar. Quick list of how amazing she is - She knows how to apply makeup that looks good for your individual face types and features. She's fast! She's professional, friendly, and super supportive of what you're doing. And she can do your hair too! She's also incredibly precise... Our look called for something dramatic in the makeup, and she did this amazing trick with false eyelashes where she stacked three on each one of my eyes. I am so happy I chose her to do my hair & makeup for the wedding. At the makeup trial, she was extremely helpful & answered all of my questions. Since I'm not the best at conveying my thoughts on what I wanted, Emily tried a variety of looks and styles until I found what I liked. She explained to me what to expect, and gave me a lot of ideas and feedback on different looks. On the day of, her entire team was extremely professional and so kind! No surprises, and everything that we talked about at the trial happened on the day of. They finished everything on time, and even had some time left over to just hangout and chat. She worked on me while the other artists worked on my bridesmaids and the two moms. She did such a fantastic job with everything, and even stayed longer to wait for my florist to drop off my hair floral piece so she could help me put it on. Emily and Cali were the makeup artists/hair stylists for the Lucky Supermarket 2013 Chinese Lunar New Year Parade float girls. They were punctual, professional, and down to earth. Their talents brought out the beauty in all six girls and prepared us for a night of cold and moderately windy weather. Even though we were freezing in traditional chinese qipaos, we couldn't have looked more amazing while shivering! Our makeup lasted through hours in crowds of swarming photographers, stadium bright lights, endless smiles, and boys drooling! I highly recommend Emily and Cali and will look forward to working with them again. read more

Unfortunately, I didn't have the best experience with Emily. I didn't find her to be professional or considerate. I wasn't happy with the results of my hair & make-up trial & she refused to give me a refund when I had kindly declined her services for my wedding. She felt she had put a lot of time & effort into the make up & hair (1.5 hrs), although she didn't actually show me how my hair would look for the wedding. I lost a lot of $$$. The make-up quality wasn't as good as I thought it would be.... it smeared right off after 3 hours into the day ( it wasn't a hot day) & my hair was sooo stiff with all the hair spray. It took me a long time in the shower to get it back to normal. I was really disappointed. I hope no one has this same experience. Emily did my hair and makeup for my wedding day and my engagement photos. She is amazing at what she does. I trusted her completely with suggestions and what looks best because she is a pro. She is super sweet, easy to talk to, and I always enjoyed my time with her. Emily also helped me dye my hair and tone it to the perfect color two days right before my wedding day! I texted her last minute in the middle of the night because I was so busy with work up until my wedding day, she was so accommodating and squeezed me in for a last minute hair appointment. She had suggested that I come back and tone my hair so that my low side bun would show more color and texture, and she was absolutely right. My hair ended up looking great, my makeup stayed on all day and night long, literally until 3am at the club. LOL Yes, we went clubbing after our wedding! read more

I recently had Emily do my makeup for a styled wedding shoot and couldn't feel more calm and confident in her abilities. This is coming from someone who has a difficult time letting go of control. Even for my own wedding I had to do my own makeup because I didn't want to give up that control. Needless to say my skills were limited and my makeup didn't last so well the entire wedding.
