J.R. chats with me casually about how things are done in Italy, though he doesn't know I've just moved to Seattle from Rome - and he's right: Quality and purchases to last for years are the emphasis, and it's a mindset I can see reflected as he returns my coat and jacket to me free of charge. The work is impeccable. Despite the triviality of my ask - replacing two buttons on a coat and one on a blazer - everything was sent off and returned in short order with the fabric brushed and cleaned, 'gratis'. Yelp? My first visit was simply a walk-in. I was in downtown Seatle, where I was visiting and interviewing for work. Walking by the shop as I had some time to sight see and went to the Pike Market that day. I stopped in because the window manequins looked cool. I had to check it out. I gained a little weight over the Spring so I was looking for a few good pieces to update my wardrobe. JR was there. Very dapper guy. He was welcoming and offered a cup of coffee from his espresso maker in the back. We chatted about silhouettes, as he tried to see what I might really be interested in. He knew all the right questions to help me help myself. I made an appointment for later that week to design a suit for a big date I had scheduled for late Summer at Maryhill in Goldendale, my wine pickup party. I like to dress up for these things. Feels good to look good! I envied JR; he gets to dress up everyday for work. I work from home, so jeans and tee shirts are my regular attire. The appointment lasted about 1/2 an hour. JR showed me fabric books to pick the color and feel for my 2 piece suit. I found a nice wool, blue square pattern. The texture was the best part, kind of an open weave. Perfect for a late summer date! I picked up a new wallet and a pink shirt which I took home that day. Just as expected, JR called about 2 months later in August for me to test fit the new suit. It was perfect of course! I was stoked! Date at Maryhill was great too! Amazing wines, good food. Fabulous view. The drive was pleasant. My date loved it as well. To my surprise, I got jeans and sweater for my birthday which my date sourced at Harris & Tailor. They are Billy Reid jeans and the sweater is a Jach's NY Cardigan. During measurements, he was direct about what he needed to get while also being respectful and mindful of boundaries. The suit arrived, was tweaked, and was finished with plenty of time before my wedding. Honestly, it became one of the wedding to-do list items that I worried the LEAST about. 1: Getting my dress made by Madison was a 7 month long nightmare. She quoted me $3k to $3.5k at our…read moreconsultation, then sent a contract over for $4.5k, which after tax meant we were just shy of $5k. She pushed our initial fitting (my first time seeing the dress) until 10 days before the contractual completion date. It was supposed to be in October, but she pushed it to November, and then December, and went weeks without replying to my emails. I finally had my first fitting 1/4 (with a contractual completion date of 1/15). When I showed up for my initial fitting, the dress was a cheap Temu version of what we had agreed on. Specific things that were in our contract (like the shape of the bodice) were disregarded. I had to push back and advocate for myself to get the dress that was in our contract, and Madison returned by trying to charge me more money. 2: Madison didn't finish my dress until 2/17, a month after it was supposed to be done and only a week before my wedding. 3: Because this process had been such a nightmare, and I (like most brides) was in new territory that I'd never had to deal with before, I had shared my experience in the r/weddingplanning subreddit. A dress shop owner who had followed the whole saga sent me a message letting me know that my $5k "couture" "one of a kind" dress was AVAILABLE ON A CHINESE SITE FOR $599. !!!!!!!!!!! You might get the impression from her website or her storefront that everything is made by her or a team of skilled craftspeople here in Ballard. This is not the case. Madison actually uses a Chinese company called Brydealo to manufacture her "custom" "one of a kind" "couture" gowns. After Brydealo manufactures them, they then wholesale them to both dress shops and the general public. All of their dresses sell for under $600, including mine. This made SO much sense. The finishing on my dress was awful - it looks like a dog chewed it off a bolt of fabric. It's made entirely with cheap, dollar store Halloween costume polyester. The thread used to sew the dress was not the same color as the dress itself (white thread on a magenta dress) making for unsightly seams. The delay in Madison "making" my dress was clearly the result of using an overseas manufacturer. When I texted Madison to ask why my "couture" "one of a kind" gown was for sale on a Chinese site for about a tenth of what she tried to charge me, she replied by saying she didn't like the tone of my text and she was choosing to end correspondence with me. No attempt to take responsibility for her actions. No explanations. No "oh yeah, sometimes it makes more sense to work with sewists over seas". Nothing. Listen: the vast majority of gowns are manufactured overseas. There is nothing inherently "wrong" with that. But what Madison is doing is deceptive and she is taking advantage of brides who don't know how this process should work. Avoid at all costs.

Madison got it fitted perfectly to my body, made sure it would stay up with subtle corset boning, hung the lace from the sleeves as beautiful off-the-shoulder pieces, and gave my a stunning 3-point bustle. I called in on a saturday morning, and got a quote from Mimet over the phone. I needed to have a suit jacket taken in a bit, and the rate he quoted me was more than reasonable. I stopped in and knew instantly that I was in the realm of a seasoned pro. As mentioned by one of the other reviewers, not only do you get your clothing professionally fitted when you come in here, but you also get a proper schooling on some of the finer points of men's furnishings and fittings. The tailor here is extremely personable and friendly. He did a wonderful job, and I am eager to recommend him/them here on the pages of Yelp. Excellent work!

I think it could break with time. Another general complaint is that Altus only offers "large" and "extra large" waist measurements... I'm 6-foot-7 with a 34" waist, so I wish there was a "extra-tall, medium" option, considering that Altus claims to make clothes 'specifically designed for tall men over 6'3" who don't need the "big" found in traditional "big & tall" sizes'. The "extra-tall, large" fits okay, though they are a little baggy.
