With one week left before we flew out for our wedding, he was able to fix my now husband's Ralph Lauren all-white suit to perfection. This review is primarily focused upon the alterations/tailoring aspect of the business. I stopped by here on a Saturday evening to get two different pants tailored (hemming and tapering). There was a slight wait but I learned the shop owner, Scott, was hand delivering a suit to an individual getting married soon- the wait was no issue at all. Scott was able to take measurements for me based on a previous pair of pants that fit well and was able to recommend different sizes for inseams based on the way I wished for the pants to stack (one pair was a dress pant and the other some casual black jeans). He diligently made notes and marked the pants to make sure everything would turn out satisfactory. Rather than rush everything to get done at once, Scott recommended I come back the next day so he could make a second measurement for the inseam on my dress pants based on how they fit with the tapering alteration done (and so I could try them on with my dress shoes). Overall, both pairs of pants were done for me by Monday- a super quick turnaround. Both pairs of pants were expertly done, with no complaints at all. In fact, there are no points of sloppiness with the work which I have seen with other tailors (and contrary to some of the other reviews). I will certainly be back for other alterations and tailoring soon. Also worth mentioning, he was very diligent about washing his hands every so often during the process! You can immediately tell Scott is quite knowledgeable about his work, offering recommendations and even sharing knowledge about conventions in other areas of the world (i.e. Italian vs Asian tailoring). Scott even went and measured my shoulders/chest/etc. as I was having difficulty obtaining these measurements for myself. Overall, a very pleasant small business that is worth supporting amidst all the closures and hard times felt across the U.S. and Seattle especially. read more

This place is the quaintest little shop ever. I came here on a tip that they might sell G Shock watches but was not in luck to find that they only carried Nixon watches. Nevertheless, the staff was extremely friendly and this is actually not JUST a men's clothing shop but also women's with nudies jeans, accessories and all kinds of goodies to match. The store is small but packed with great inventory of illusive brands you will have a hard time finding anywhere else. Alright, gather round boys and girls, cuz Stephy's got a little story for ya called, "Never judge a book by its cover." The story begins with two sassy gals on the hunt for some coffee. They hit a little mom and pop place but they are out of soy, booo. They then are forced to go to Starbucks and they order their soy vanilla lattes and begin to head back to the car to go shopping for cute coats. As they are approaching the car one of the girls points across the street and tells her friend that Kuhlman is a really cool little boutique and the two decide to stroll on over and check it out. They walk in and the tag along gal glances at the racks of sparsely spaced out clothing, looks at one price tag and decides this place is too expensive and simply sips her latte and ignores its offerings. The other girl is looking through the racks and begins chatting up the owner. After a few moments, the girl starts pulling out a few things saying things like, "CUTE! Did you see this? Did you see this other one too?" Uninterested, judgmental girl then walks over begrudgingly and looks at what her friend is pulling out and is totally surprised at the fantastic coat that her friend has pulled out. And what's this? It's on super sale markdown and is usually a few hundred dollars and on sale for $120? Saaahhhweet! She then sees it's a small and gets discouraged once again, but her friend asks the owner about other sizes and bam, out comes a Large. She then puts it on and finds the newest addition to her happy coat family! Moral of the story, look at the racks, dig, pull things out and ask questions. The gentlemen here are totally helpful and had I not had the eagle eye of my fashionista friend I would have sadly missed out on my badass new coat and that would have sucked. read more

Great little shop that also sells woman clothing. First time I went in to get a pair of jeans hemmed, I walked out with 2 dresses and a bathing suit! Its the best place to go for alterations. You pay more than you would at a cleaners but the quality is worth the price and they are really nice! Their women's collection is only a small portion of the store, but there are a lot of great pieces in the mix. One of my favorite necklaces by a local designer was purchased there. read more

These guys know exactly what they're doing. I took my suit that I'm wearing for my wedding that I purchased from another store and they did an amazing job with my alterations. The vision I had for my suit was somewhat complex and unorthodox and they nailed it. I asked to take in the sleeves and alter the pants to a shape and sillhouette inspired by my favorite designer Yohji Yamamoto. Scott was the man behind the marking and pinning and everything was very accurate and I am very very happy with the end result. The turnaround time was only a mere 4 days. Drop off on Monday and fitting and finalizing on Friday. I put the entire suit on and I was almost in tears because of how solid the fine details were and I instantly knew it was something special for the wedding day. 3 months have gone by after the wedding and on random occasions I still bring out the suit and it is still holding up very nicely. When you need your suit tailored or if you're looking for a custom bespoke suit, look no further than the folks over at Kuhlman. Found a great blazer on sale but it was a little too big, took it to Kuhlman on a friend's recommendation. They shortened the sleeves at the shoulder, but in doing so created some weird puffs/divots in the fabric. I took it back to have them redo it, but now the sleeves are too short. I also had them repair a torn shirt. That came out a lot better, but still had an odd little wrinkle. Also, they ask you when you need it back but don't call you when it's ready, which is annoying. Bottom line: it feels like they don't really care about you or what they're doing. read more

I hate to put this out there (because I am so, so selfish), but they have the very tippity top best selection of jewelry. My husband had a suit and shirt made by Scott Kuhlman for our wedding. We needed everything done in about 6 weeks (short timeline) and Scott got it all done in time, despite the shipping company losing the shirt temporarily at the last minute. There were two fitting appointments: at the first, Scott took my husband's measurements and walked us through the myriad of cut options and fabric choices. A few weeks later we had a test fitting with the suit panels temporarily stitched together. We wanted the lapels a bit narrower and Scott was happy to oblige. A few weeks after that, the suit was ready and my husband went in for a final fitting (no changes were required). Kuhlman doesn't do the sewing himself, and we never found out who does, but it was all high quality work. The shirt needed one measurement appointment, with no test fitting. There was a shipping snafu (the shipping company's fault) such that the shirt didn't arrive in time for us to take it to our east coast wedding. Scott did everything he could to track down the shirt, and in the meantime Kyle prepared a few substitute shirts to overnight to us. Ultimately the shirt arrived at Kuhlman two days before the wedding, and was shipped to us as fast as possible so we had it in our hands the next morning. I was really impressed with Scott and Kyle's response to the crisis. Scott said he's worked with this shipper for 14 years and never had a problem. The shirt fit perfectly, just like the suit. We really happy with both, and my husband looked great on our wedding day. read more

Went there in my search for the perfect coat; I didn't find it, but saw some other cool (expensive) gear. One unique aspect of this store is that they custom make/ tailor stuff. Also, if you get sick of shopping, have a drink at Cyclops next door. Seattle isn't known for being an especially fashionable city, but this is one of a few good shops for men who aren't addicted to fleece. read more

Once again Kuhlman pulled off a tailoring miracle in a pinch. So after purchasing a suit and getting a tailored elsewhere I once again had to rely on Kuhlman to straighten out other peoples mistakes. Unlike most places when tailoring is concerned if you go in with a clear cut idea of what you need done they do it, and for the less experienced person they know exactly what needs to be done. Kuhlman is such a great little hideaway filled with things that just...make me happy! It's really become my go-to place for clothes that are current but not too trendy, interesting without being obnoxious, super mod but never kitschy. Their women's selection is well-curated and easy to browse. They always carry such interesting lines from all over the world, and I love how they juxtapose classic tailoring with fun, bright little details (like the "Happy Socks" in lollipop colors displayed right next to a stiff military jacket). I always find something when I come in here. The staff is a little standoffish and awkward, but generally helpful. A great little store! read more

I've passed this place numerous times on my way to work and the window displays always caught my attention. I finally decided to head in for a little lunch time shopping. I immediately noticed the bolts of fabric along the back wall. I don't know of too many places that still make custom tailored clothing. Having neither the funds nor need for bespoke clothing I stuck to the racks. Most of the clothing fell into the category of contemporary rather than trendy. In my book that's a good thing. Being on the bleeding edge of fashion usually means spending a fortune for clothing that's going to look silly in just a few years. On the other handy a nice navy sweater, Fred Perry polo shirt or Spiewak jacket will look just as good 10 years from now as it does today. Prices were up there but I've found over the years that more expensive clothes are often worth it. I have sweaters and shirts purchased at Barney's 10 years ago that still look great today. $150 for a shirt you'll wear for 10 years is a bargain compared to $50 for a shirt that will only look good for 2 years. Sadly, many people don't seem to get this. For those folks we have Old Navy, The Gap, H&M, etc. I should also point out that the Spiewak blazer I picked up was priced **less** than what Urban Outfitters or Nordstrom's charge. Always nice when you can shop local AND save money! The selection is a bit thin but it is a small store. I should also point out not everything is on the floor. I had a hard time finding items in my size on the racks but the sales staff was able to pull out samples in the correct size from storage in back. The staff was friendly and helpful without being pushy. They were more than happy to make numerous trips to the back room to search for items in my size. read more

Came here on a recommendation as the "best tailor in Seattle". Simply needed the sleeves on a new coat taken up. I wanted to take it somewhere I could trust because the coat was quite expensive. They did a fine job marking up the sleeve length and asking me how I'd wear the coat. The turn around was quick too, just 4 days. However, when I picked up the coat, first of all it was covered in strings and chalk marks were all over the sleeve. That was fine enough, nothing I couldn't clean up, but I took note of it. I tried the coat on and the sleeves hem and length looked good. I left, but when I wore the coat later that evening, I went to put it on and the left sleeve turned inside out. Not sure how I hadn't noticed it earlier, but after inspecting the lining in the left sleeve, it was completely twisted and bagging. I wore the coat all evening and the sleeve in question just wouldn't sit right. After getting it home and looking at it closer, the right sleeve's lining is perfectly aligned and sewn with no extra fabric, but the left sleeve looks like someone that didn't know what they were doing just sewed it on without watching what they were doing. Baffling how one sleeve could be done correctly and the other so far off. Not sure what the circumstances were, but that's just too big of a mistake for me to try again. Lost my trust. Wish I would've read through some of the other tailoring specific reviews on here first instead of just following the verbal recommendation I'd gotten. read more

A friend told me that I could find Ben Sherman clothing at Kuhlman, so I stopped in to see their selection. Upon entering I was warmly greeted and told that if I saw anything I liked that they could bring the right size up from in back. Apparently they only keep one of each item on display, but have plenty more. However I started talking with the lady behind the counter and mentioned that I was considering buying a suit. She was very helpful and showed me the suits, knew who and where they were made, and knew the current stock of suits that they had. And I was much impressed with the pricing of their suits. I hadn't planned on buying a suit that day, but when I found one for UNDER $300 dollars I decided that I couldn't pass up on it. They have a great selection of 2 and 3 piece suits, all very well made and fashionable. And they tailor them to fit on premise, as they are also a custom clothier. I was able to buy a very sharp and affordable suit that fits very nicely! read more

Yikes- I dropped off a suit to be taken in at the shoulders, not at the sleeves. I was very explicit about how I was bringing it to them specifically to do this. They seemed professional and competent. When I picked it up, it was hemmed at the sleeves, and not very well at that. It's a crime, to any suit, to do this. I can't deny- it stings worse when it's a $1,200 Acne suit. Their response to my displeasure was the equivalent of a blank stare. Worse still, and this is in part my fault for not catching it, I was still charged the 80 or so bucks for the shoulder tailoring costs. Bollocks. read more

Once in a while these jackets also go on sale for big discounts (like true 50% off), which is a great opportunity to get an heirloom quality piece of clothing. read more

Disclaimer: This review refers to Kuhlman's tailoring services only I found Kuhlman while looking for a tailor in Seattle. I needed numerous things altered (blazers, jeans, and dress shirts), and I thought that while their prices were high, if the quality of their work was anything like the quality of their store it would be worth it (they have a nice little boutique that carries cool gear from designers which are hard to find in Seattle). Boy, was I wrong. Here's a list of all the items I had worked on over the last year and a half and the mistakes that were made (I don't know why I kept going back - I guess I felt bad since the staff was always apologetic and fixed the items at no charge, and the store was only located two blocks away from my apartment): * Designer jeans (4 pairs) - These were bootcut jeans that I had slimmed down to straight-leg. They did the slimming correctly on all 4 pairs, but hemmed one without asking so they turned out to be shorter than I liked. * Dress shirts (4) - I had several dress shirts slimmed down, two of them were slimmed down too much and needed modifications. * Blazers (2) - I had the sleeves shortened on two blazers, and I had to bring each blazer back THREE TIMES for fixes due to the sleeves hanging incorrectly, extremely visible stitching, stitching coming undone after a dry-clean, etc. Inexcusable for any halfway-competant tailor, particularly one which charges such high prices. I've visted two other tailors since Kuhlmans, and they were both noticably cheaper and did far superior work. If you're looking for a tailor, avoid this place like the plague. read more

This is a great place that has a friendly environment! Customer service is phenomenal! This review is a bit late considering that I got my denim hemmed in March but better late then never right? Anyways, the female employee, sorry I forgot her name, remembered who I was a week later when I returned to pick up the jeans. Really deserves 4.5 stars...Seattle needs more of Kuhlman and more Kuhlman-like boutiques. The diminutive size of the store limits its selection of men's (and women's) ware and it is quite easy to miss the place while driving down the avenue struggling to find parking... That being said, the gentleman running the place has an eye for timeless, solid, distinctive stuff that is not pretentious but earns you compliments from both boys and girls. Prices are reasonable (for the quality of the ware...but not low by any means) and they run year-round sales, which benefited me on a number of occasions. Bonus point: they also carry size S and slimmer guys will generally have no trouble finding perfectly-fitting items. read more

A great local shop. We stopped in to checkout the Bellroy wallets...which I purchased. The wife found a cute dress. It seemed to be mostly men's clothes, but there are clothes for women there as well. The prices are comparable to your Banana Republic or Ann Taylor, so why not wear something that isn't from the mall. read more

Incredible tailor. Somewhat pricey, but for the quality of the work it is entirely worth it. I've had patches sewn into torn or worn jeans to make them look like new and had them transform my "eh" fitting jeans into "yowza" fitting jeans. I make extensive use of my tailor, and they are always fast and flawless. It's also a lovely little shop. I particularly like the accessories and details you can find there, such as cuff links and glasses frames. Their menswear is killer as well - great coast, ties, pants, etc for the handsome dude type. read more
