Fired my instructor ON THE MORNING OF MY ROAD TEST that I had been driving with for all of my lessons. Gave me Fred, who was very grumpy and grabby with the wheel during my review before road test (probably because he suddenly had to take all of my previous instructor's students). He asked me to turn down the mirror towards the rear wheel during practice but when I turned it back to face the road while driving towards to MVC exam, he gave me a horrible attitude and for some reason was upset that I put the mirror back so I can drive safely. Thank you for heightening my anxiety right before the exam. Also gave a sour attitude afterwards when he drove us back from the exam, sped and cut off other cars with no blinkers on. Who is supposed to learn at a place like this? Stay away. read more

Fair Lawn Driving School is FANTASTIC! From signing up for the 6 hours of driving lessons to hiring the driving instructor -- Fred -- to take my daughter for one last driving lesson and the road test in Lodi, N.J. We used driving instructor Fred for all of FLDS's services. Fred is professional and calm and the kids love him. The entire office staff at FLDS is friendly, professional and extremely thorough with all the paperwork you need to get a driver's license. We also booked Fred with the FLDS vehicle for my daughter's road test b/c the state requires a hand brake between the driver and front passenger seats. You have to pay for this extra service, but it is worth it. It also let me -- the mom -- off the hook because my daughter was so nervous. Fred has a nice way about him and the kids are more confident with him. Highly recommend. read more

I have to tell you this is the not where you want your teens to learn how to drive. My son took his 6 hour driving lessons back in February 2014. The driver handed him his temporary permit and said I just got this from Lodi. So my son and I both think we are done and we have been practicing since then. And the plan was when my son turns 17 this August he will get his diving exam pass and be done. Today, my son called this driving school and attempted to set up the driving test date for the day after his birthday in August. The woman who answer said your parents are suppose to take you to Lodi and validate the permit and then the test is six month from that date. Needless to say my son was very upset. I pick up the phone and call the school and I'm immediately brought back to the day I signed him up in February that the document I signed stated after the 6 hrs it's the parents responsibility to take the child to DMV and validate the permit and get a date for the driving test. The woman then referred to mail that came to my home back in February that states to do this validation. She then tells me that DMV Has never made exceptions to the 6 month rule. Then I say well if you have had issues like this with other children maybe your process is broken. The icing on the cake was this afternoon when I am at the DMV explaining the scenario to the clerk. She shook her head and I asked has others using this driving school had issues too? She politely said no comment. Then the clerk next to her couldn't hold back and said they are the worst. All the other schools Shepard the kids and parents through to completion. I wish someone would have warned me about this company as I would have definitely chosen another school. Now I'm sitting with a 17 year old disappointed son because they didn't fix the hole in their process. I admit I should have been more on top of this situation but when you pay good money for this serviced they should have went the extra mike and make sure both the child and parent fully understand their obligation here. Other schools have taken on the responsibility and Until Fairlawn driving school recognizes they have a flaw in their process I'd shop elsewhere. BEWARE PARENTS read more

I called fairlawn driving school and spoke with Karen, she wasn't understanding AT ALL, hung-up on me, and apparently has a stick up her a**. I explained my situation to her and told her that I wouldn't be able to make it because of a virus that I got that morning at 5 am and didn't want to get my instructor sick. She proceeded to tell me that I would be charged a 65 dollars cancellation fee. I kindly asked to speak to a manager and she laughed and told me no one was there to talk to me. Before the call ended I said "excuse me but what is your name" she replies, K-A-R-E-N. If I would've known I was going to get sick, I would've obviously cancelled yesterday to not get charged $65. This is straight up ridiculous!!!! read more

To be fair, I believe the Fair Lawn Driving School has a good reputation but I would caution anyone considering using the school to avoid the instructor named "John". My poor review is based only on the experience my daughter had with this "instructor" named "John". She took the six hour course through Fair Lawn School at the school and John really made things hard for her. He yelled at her and said belittling things like "you're going to kill someone". Admittedly my daughter is the nervous type and some situations like learning to drive can make her even more nervous but she's a very honest kid and I have no reason to believe she is lying or stretching the truth. You would think that an instructor at a driving school would know how to deal with nervous students but obviously John was not trained to handle this type of person or simply didn't care. I have driven with my daughter and I can tell you that her driving is fine and nothing that she has done warranted the kind of behavior she told me John exhibited. She told me that at one point, he took her hands by the wrists and forcibly put them onto the steering wheel. At other times, he insulted her driving or was so overly critical that she did not want to get behind the wheel for months. She dreaded the idea of driving and I worried whether or not she'd ever get behind the wheel again. She did not tell me about everything that occurred with John until many months after she completed her six hours. She is now taking another six hours of training with the North Jersey Driving School (instructor's name is Bruce) and he's great. In just two lessons, he has restored her confidence and made her excited about learning to drive. Other students in my daughter's class took "lessons" with John and experienced the same bad attitude. read more

I would highly recommend Fair Lawn Driving School for behind the wheel training. I have used FLDS for three out of four of my children and plan to use them for my last child this fall. I tried another driving school since my one child wanted to use the one his friend used and had higher end vehicles. When he "graduated/finished" 1.2 hours early so his instructor could get a jump start on their vacation I knew we were in trouble. He never practiced parallel parking and limited head in parking and trying to get that time or partial refund back was impossible. FLDS is good for all types of driver - motivated and hesitant. We had Rob for the two most recent kids and couldn't be more pleased. (Patience / Knowledgeable / Trusted to be with my child alone.) One reviewer made a comment about not knowing it was their responsibility to take their child after they were done to get the permit validated and schedule the road test. The driving school did do this for my oldest in the early 2000's but did not with my last two in 2013/14 - not sure why that changed. They did however repeatedly state that both at my initial call, in paper work attached to contract and the instructors final note upon completion. read more

My 87 year old father had to retake his driving test. After driving for over 70 years, he needed to brush up on some skills. The driving instructor Fred, quickly found ways to relate to him and eventually was able to get him to pass his test. Fred felt like one of the family and always had a positive attitude about getting him to pass after another driving school told us he was too set in his ways. I am so pleased to say that the instructor, Margaret, and the office staff were patient and so helpful and accommodating to my daughter, who had to take lessons from Fairlawn Driving School after she failed the first driving test because of parallel parking. She then had lessons with Margaret. My daughter was very upset about failing, which happened when she took the second test at the Wayne branch because of an examiner who failed her after not allowing her to parallel park more than once. The general rule is three tries. I would not recommend Wayne because it has a bad reputation. Her instructor was so patient and made sure she would pass the test, for the third time, which she happily did today at the Lodi location. I can't thank the school enough for their help. read more

This review is mostly towards the negative impression brought upon me by the instructor of the name "Stephen". It is one thing to give constructive criticism, but this instructor is not someone you want to be stuck with your first time driving. A first time driving instructor should be someone that will make you feel comfortable on the road, and give you the patience you deserve as a first time driver. During my daughter's first time driving on the road, Stephen was extremely rude in unnecessary situations. I've driven with my daughter and I know that she is a fine driver. He told her things like "you're asking for a death wish" and "other instructors would be screaming at you by now, but I don't scream at my students"...while this is true, it didn't make up for his sighs along with him muttering under his breath (making little side comments to himself). He also tended to say "wow." In a rude tone every time she did something he did not like. Another big thing my daughter did not like was that his instructions were sometimes contradicting. If she was doing something, he would yell at her to do it a different way, but when she would follow those instructions, he still yelled at her, emphasizing the fact that she was doing it right the first time. Everything he said was always in a very rude tone, which my daughter says made her feel "stupid". With this instructor you can tell that he just wants to go home, and is not fully motivated in helping kids learn to drive in a comfortable environment. read more
