In terms of ambience it was precious, it had a warm crackling fire and cute decor. The first thing I noticed were the heavily inflated prices. Seriously, $25 for a basic burger? The cheapest item on the menu is a small cup of soup at $7. I recognize it's authentic farm to table, but the costs were still too elevated. Prices aside, the biggest detraction from our experience was our overly pushy waitress. She immediately started asking us if we wanted the most expensive drinks on the menu, we said no and settled on $4 sodas served in small mason jars and we ordered brisket chili in a cup and a Caesar dressing, she asked twice if we wanted $8 chicken added to which we firmly said no. She then proceeded to ask three times if we wanted to order appetizers because our food was going to take a while..., ( a salad and cup of soup). We again said no. When our food arrived, she again asked if we wanted to order anything else. We said no, and she walked away clearly annoyed. When the food arrived, she immediately asked if we wanted dessert. We hadn't even taken our first bite of lunch. I will say-- the food was pretty good! I loved the brisket chili and my spouse enjoyed her salad. As we wrapped up and asked for the check the waitress again asked if we wanted dessert. Her pushy demeanor and rush really ruined our experience. The $33 Dollar meal solidified that this gimmicky place is not somewhere we plan on returning to. ESPECIALLY after finding out this location is under investigation for physical abuse of baby calves. Shame on this place, I'm so embarrassed I patronized here.

We had such an amazing day. All the children in our group rated this a 10/10 kinda day. We learned and laughed. We never felt rushed or like the children's questions weren't answered. I never thought I'd get to see a baby calf being born. I'd also like to give a shout out to Logan on helping our Hailey overcome her fear of heights. He walked her through to rope course twice and she felt a accomplished when she finished

Had dinner at their restaurant (did not he a chance to tour the farm). They don't lie about what they promote, from their farm to your table! Super tasty and fresh food. We had a wonderful time and e joyed everything we tried! I going to dig my pictures of the food so I can share with you guys all that we had. We witnessed an amazing sunset! It was stunning that's for sure. We watched the sunset on their beautiful porch and it was super nice. Lots of seating in the restaurant and we were told that on Thursdays they have life music, but since we live in the city of Chicago, it's a long drive. They did tell us that they had in the works a future hotel onsite so that will definitely work for us.

We went in January. They have the igloos. Rental is $100 rental for two hours and groups of 2-6 people. The food is good as usual. They have the regular menu. For starters we had the bacon sampler, cornbread skillet, and the cheese curds. We had the pan seared salmon, bacon wrapped meatloaf, pot pie, and herb crusted walleye. It was all really good except the meatloaf. My son-in-law and husband had that and said it was warm at best. The service, and I have been there about ten times at different times and the service is always slow. Our reservation was for 7. We were seated in the igloo and didn't see anyone until 7:15. The only time the service wasn't slow was the two times we ate inside. They need staff for specifically out door seating. They stretch the wait staff too thin. We will go again because it is a great place to east and visit. We can bring the dogs too. If you want to go for Valentine's Day, they will have the igloo's for that weekend, the price is $150 though.

This review is solely based on the Dairy Cafe at Fair Oaks Farm. This cafe is a must stop for me on my way to and from Chicago. They make the BEST grilled cheese. It is seriously amazing and baked on the best bread. I always get the ham and havarti pepper or ham and sweet swiss. Both are wonderful! The sandwiches are quite large, but they also allow you to do a half with a side salad or cup of soup. The cheese is so fresh and has great flavor! I also enjoy the addition of ham. It adds a great savory piece to the sandwich. The bread is the perfect crispiness and is topped with Parmesan cheese. Overall, this is a must stop if traveling on 65. The farm itself looks very neat and would be great for kids. They also have an actual farmhouse restaurant that I would love to eventually try. But, for now, I will stick to the amazing grilled cheese.

I started this review two months ago and never seemed to find the words to finish. After my latest trip to Fair Oaks, however, I realized that I talk about this place ALL THE TIME so I should really put my rave review out there for the rest of the world and not just my unfortunate immediate company. I love Fair Oaks!!! Adorable, homey, delicious... I make it a point to stop here every single time I drive between Indianapolis and Chicago. Yes, it's super touristy. You can go into the Birthing Barn to see the newborn calves and their jumbo-sized bottles. You can tour the cheese processing building. And in the summer they have climbing walls and a giant trampoline/ moon walk for all the *ahem* kids to play on. (What?!?) There's a big cafeteria style room where you can see the milk bottling process through a window while you sip on a fresh made milkshake or munch on my personal fave -- grilled cheese! But the real reason I stop at Fair Oaks isn't for the field trip factor, it's for the cheese! Free sampling of all their varieties is enough for me to pull over every time. My dear lord, Butterkase is surely a gift from above! The Sweet Swiss and Gouda are other favorites. Buuuut here's a secret: You can buy some varieties of Fair Oaks farms at Strak & Van Til in Chicago, even cheaper than they are on the farm!! I don't know how that works, but if you can't make the trek for the full experience it's a nice alternative. Unfortunately, the award-winning Butterkase isn't sold at Strak so I always add 20 minutes to my trip home and shell out the $9.20/lb at the farm. So worth it!

This place has a restaurant on site and it's not what you would expect to find off the interstate in the middle of corn fields. Definitely worth the detour. They use their own beef and pork from their cattle. You definitely taste that farm to kitchen table freshness with this place. I had their hefty 32oz ribeye and wow it was cooked to perfection. The staff was very polite and attentive.

Place is out in middle of no where but WORTH the stop! They have tours, a gift shop and cafe. I have had the grilled cheese, excellent! And I recently had the egg and cheese burrito. All I can say is bring a BIG appetite, this thing weights about 3-4 lbs probably, no kidding! Apparently they are working on getting wine, why not? They do have a boat load if cheese!

We have been coming to Fair Oaks Farms for about 10 now. We have watched their terrific concept grow and grow... Truly a great place for anyone to stop and relax from the rigorous commute of interstate 65... The food and ice cream is very good! The outdoor fun (for a wristband fee) is great for the kids! The Gift shop is worthy and the restrooms are clean... You won't be disappointed.

I ate in the main restaurant (not the Cowfe) and had the best rib eye steak burger ever! The meat came from the dairy's own cow which was noted on the menu by a little cow icon next to the burger. Even the pickle was fantastic, they make them there too. My side salad was topped with their own cheddar cheese and home made dressing. I left without trying their ice cream which I know was a mistake but now I have a reason to go back. Great service, extremely clean facility, super simple to get to less than 1/4 mile off of I-65.

A great stop coming from or going to Chicago off of 65. Good for children, solo traveling and they also have a dog park. There is a dairy barn if you would just like to stop for ice cream. I was traveling by myself, so I had lunch at the bar in their restaurant. It was a Sunday and they had a regular menu, lunch, brunch and drink specials. The side of macaroni and cheese would probably be best to share, but so good! Definitely order that and a Bloody Mary.

One of my more favorite places to recharge my vehicle while traveling through the great state of Indiana. The ice cream is so fresh, the service is always very friendly and fast, and I love getting to learn and checkout while waiting for the car to charge. read more

Four of us ate at the restaurant. The food was very good. We went next door for ice cream $5.25 for one dip. NO Way! Also, the gift shop and ice cream building does not compare to the old building. Please keep your prices down so families can afford to come to your amazing property. Nancy read more

What an amazing establishment. It was very interactive and educational. We had a blast seeing the animals and learning about all the amazing things that go on. We tried the shop and even though it was cold, we had to try their ice cream. The ice cream was creamy and fresh and a perfect way to end our tour. A must see place while you're in town. read more

This is a fantastic place to bring the family as there are lots of activities for children. The dairy tour is fascinating. Seeing so many cows being milked on the moving merry-go-round can't be beat. Watching a calf being born in the birthing barn is amazing. If I go again, I would plan to get there in the evening and spend the night in the nearby hotel. The food in the restaurant is excellent and the ice cream is out of this world good! A wholesome experience for the whole family! read more

We we're wandering Indiana heading to see friends at Purdue. My husband had been here before with his dad and sister. He wanted me to experience the wonderful grilled cheese sandwich. Well we stopped and it was well worth it. The staff is so welcoming!!! The country store and cheese samples alone are worth the stop. The freshly made grilled cheese took it to the next level. The sandwich was hot and gooey. The bread was crunchy and warm. It had been dusted with Parmesan cheese. Oh so good. We toured the grounds afterwards and were impressed with the child friendly options. They had a wonderful selection of pumpkins to choose from. If you are close by or passing through this is a great stop! Enjoy read more

This review is based solely on the ice cream as we did not eat at the cafe and briefly browsed the small gift shop. Gift shop was small yet had a variety of typical items you would find at other types of locations lots of farming related items. They also had a small candy shop that I didn't checkout so nothing to report there. We ordered ice cream. They had one person scooping and one person ringing up on a Saturday afternoon which seemed a little understaffed (just my opinion). Ice cream was good quality and very rich/creamy. read more

I enjoyed our trip to he dairy in March. But I was quite disappointed afterwards. I'd expected more from what we'd paid. Don't get me wrong, I still believe they deserve 4 stars as the interactive farm is very educational and fun for young children to learn from. There's a wonderful restaurant and amazing cheese that's made on-site. But the cost? It seems a bit much. Maybe they're trying to keep the "riff-Raff" out and only the more prosperous in??? Maybe they feel the venue justifies the cost??? I'm not sure how they value their experience to be so high. For me, I was disappointed and felt a bit robbed. It shouldn't cost the same amount that a zoo or a museum that takes 6-8 hours to visit when the dairy only takes 3-4 - tops. I'd hoped to take my friends and their three children there in May as they're traveling from Europe. But after seeing the cost and what you receive in return, I think there might be better ways to spend our money. **Note...there's always the chance that I may have missed an exhibit or we may have attended on an "off day" which might have effected my judgement. That being said, it's not a bad place to visit at all. If you're looking for an educational and one of a kind experience, I'd still recommend it for that reason. Just beware of the cost/value. It's pricey! read more

We have been here before very expensive and the food was not anything to write home about. Also the way the animals looked sad... yes I have been here before I thought it was going to a. Nice place to show my children but even they came back sad. They asked why the animals didn't look happy well that question was hard to ask we all know why. I think you should spend your money elsewhere if you're going to take a trip wasn't worth the price. And they also take down yelp reviews because your voice your opinion I thought this was what we were here for standup for your rights it's the first amendment! read more
As the number of independent places near the Indiana interstates dwindles (RIP Blue & White Truck Stop), we have to search farther and farther off the beaten track to find something more reflective of the local culture than McDonalds or Subway. I was hoping that Fair Oaks was the middle-of-nowhere gem that I had been looking for. Sadly, it was not. The dining room is set up cafeteria style. The sandwich counter offers grilled cheese sandwiches made on a panini press with various meats or no meat, as you choose. The cheese is very good, and the panini rolls are pretty good. There are also pre-made iceberg lettuce salads, potato chips, cookies, etc., that you would expect from a regular sandwich place. There are a few cheeseless options, as well, but when the entire establishment revolves around cheesemaking (there are banners celebrating their award-winning cheeses hung in the dining room) then what's the point? There is also a counter where you can buy cheese to take away, and there is an ice cream counter with a very long line of customers, so I'm guessing it's good (I didn't try it). There are non-carbonated drinks available (they cater to school groups and do not serve carbonated drinks). They advertise "gourmet coffee" on their roadside billboards, but don't be fooled: it's just Starbucks. My baby stole the last 1/4 of my grilled cheese sandwich and gnawed on it the rest of my way home. If he could type, undoubtedly his review would be better than mine. So to recap: Good grilled cheese, narrow selection, crappy salads, and probably good ice cream. Would I stop here again? Maybe. I'm still looking for my roadside gem, though. read more

This is for the whole complex, not just the restaurant, which I have reviewed separately. Fair Oaks is a great place to stop on any drive up or down I-65. Supposedly, they are self sufficient and produce their own power from the manure. Whether that this true or not, they have great exhibits for kids; and great sit down restaurant; really nice grocery that has excellent cuts of meat, Indiana beers, and baked goods; and of course the original cheese shop/lunch counter. While you can buy a $150 wheel of cheese that is the size of a hubcap, what you really want is a grilled cheese sandwich and a scoop of ice cream. Both are excellent--and just enough to get you the hour and a half left up to Chicago! Worth a stop! read more

This review is for the cafe only. I drive by this place every other weekend on my way between Lafayette and Chicago. I once stopped with my kids at the nearby gas station and ate at their subway for times sake but felt guilty I didn't patronize the local non-chain and always meant to go back. Yesterday my girlfriend and I stopped at the cafe to get a sandwich. It was maybe the worst culinary experience of my life. First, the ambiance was terrible. Screeching kids, a tour bus of befuddled old people, young families with SUV aisle-blocking strollers. There was a long line for food and coffee, but the menu looked pretty good with a variety of deli sandwiches and grilled cheese. I ordered a Reuben and my girlfriend got a turkey and cheese panini. I ordered a latte, but was told that their machine was broken. So we each got a water, and they brought us dixie cup sized styrofoam cups. The line moved incredibly slowly and I realized it was because each person placed an order for four others as their families held seats (there weren't that many tables, maybe 20). We finally got to place our order and noticed a sign that said food took 15-20 minutes!!! For a sandwich? And let me tell you, they used every bit of that time. We finally got buzzed for our food and sat down after repeatedly orbiting to find an open table in competition with everyone else. I realized that tables weren't opening up because after eating their food, people would send someone up to the ice cream counter and then they'd sit their for another 15 minutes eating ice cream. I'm not high-strung but the place was literally anxiety-attack inducing. My sandwich was not only the worst Reuben I've ever had, but actually the worst sandwich I've ever had. It's hard to screw up a Reuben, but they managed it. It wasn't on rye, the corned beef was cut way too thick and was gristly and the whole thing was encased in a mass of greasy melted cheese. By the third bite, I was ready to wretch. That was all I could handle and threw about 7/8ths of it out. My girlfriend's panini was cut from the same cloth and she picked the turkey out and pitched hers, too. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I appreciate what they are trying do and applaud their entrepreneurial efforts. But a good idea isn't enough, you've got to be able to deliver and they sure didn't. If you get hungry around exit 220 on I-65, go to the Subway. read more

The is some of the best cheese, ice cream, sandwiches anywhere. We travel to Chicago 6-7 times a year and we stop every time for a milkshake and to get some cheese to take home. Over the years it has grown into this monster farm food family entertainment place. With a food cafe, tours of the farm, and other site to see. Now we have a 2 year old and we get her ice cream too, but they don't have a "kids" size and the small it huge for her. If you get a sandwich I recommend asking for half the cheese! read more

I pass Fair Oaks on my way to La Porte from Indianapolis and I always stop by. They offer tours, have a restaurant, cafe, and gift shop. I usually only have time to grab some ice cream and usually take some cheese to go. I am a huge ice cream lover and this place is hands down my favorite. I get the mint chocolate chip but the butter pecan is a huge favorite with the rest of my family. They have an awesome cheese selection as well. I had quite the experience at Fair Oaks Dairy Farm. I came here for lunch with several work colleagues on a day long road trip. We had a blast. I had a Caesar salad in anticipation of a heavy dinner, and it was fine. Not great. Just ok. Blah. Get the Cuban. Or the grilled cheese. I did, however, sample about five different cheeses while my friends waited for their meals. YUMMM! Their aged gouda is excellent. Ok fine. Maybe I had 10 samples.... the wait was long! There is an adorable little shop here, a fantastic play area for children (and adults... hello wall climbing) and beautiful farm-ish scenery all over. They also have a "birthing room" that I came into unexpectedly. I swear I thought I as going into a gift shop when I was faced with two momma cows giving birth. It was slightly disturbing, but fascinating! You have been warned. read more

An emporium of Dairy sets alongside I-65 and is the perfect rest stop between Chicago and Indianapolis or wherever your travels may take you. We especially love to stop here when the weather is nice. There is an extensive outdoor area for kids. A maze, a moonwalk sans top and a bovine birthing area provide the kids with fun for at least an hour. If you go on the official tour its a bit pricey. The food is a bit above average. I have had better Ice Cream in the Chicago area. The paninis are very good. The ham panini with cheddar is exceptional. read more

The video proof (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/video/news/video-1939962/Video-GRAPHIC-Investigation-shows-abusive-conditions-dairy-cow-farm.html) of the abuses at Fair Oaks Farms should cause anyone to shudder. Maybe before you go there to run through their corn maze or purchase their products, it might be good for you to ask yourself why you want to support a business that is cruel to animals when there are much more humane alternatives. Defending the actions taken against the animals (as seen in the video evidence ... this is not a conspiracy) is inexcusable. We won't go there and we sure won't buy anything produced (and abused) at Fair Oaks Farms. read more
