Stopped here for lunch on a Thursday afternoon. My husband had the French dip sandwich, and I had the crispy chicken sandwich. Both of our meals were good, but we both agreed that my chicken sandwich was the better of the two. We were looking for something to do and decided to go for a drive but were not sure where we wanted to go. I recalled an article I read that listed the best hidden gem restaurants in every state and for Illinois it was the Longbranch. It was a 1.5-hour drive each way from our house and am glad that was the destination we choose. The food was excellent, and we liked the decor. We ordered the jumbo pretzel for an appetizer. For my meal, I had the Wild Rice soup to start and the Vodka Chicken Parmesan. My wife ordered a salad to start, and the Bacon Wrapped Fire Grilled Pork Chops topped with Gorgonzola and mac & cheese. Our daughter had the wings and fries. For dessert, we had the sliced peaches topped with a cinnamon roll. The food was delicious, the portions were large, and the prices were very reasonable. The owners are Lindsay and Nick. Lindsay stopped by our table several times to see how we were doing and when she found out that we were from out of the immediate area she told us about how to find one of Al Capone's former houses (which happens to be nearby) and also shared some of her history with the restaurant. That was very nice that she spent that much time at our table considering how busy she was as the restaurant was packed. Even though the Longbranch is not near our house we are looking forward to visiting again. If you are in the area, you should make a point of stopping in. Told waitress and she proceeded to tell me there was plenty of cheese in try here since she seen chef put pepper Jack cheese in. The town of L'Erable practically revolves around this establishment with the amount of cars that were parked in front, hell, its the only place of commerce in the town. Inside is your typical divey bar atmosphere. We went there to take advantage of their smelt night, which is only available on the 1st Thursday of every month. It was pretty good, deep-fried with a little tartar sauce, all you can eat for $9.95. We also got some hog (I think) wings, which were big-boned pork wings that were also delicious. The patrons, most were regulars where everyone knew each other, were very nice, down to earth, and enjoyed talking to us. Some were quite characters as an older guy cracked open an acorn that had a condom inside. The guy, apparently grew nuts and somehow found a way of putting the condom in the nut. Just when I thought I saw everything. Its a tough call as to whether I'd go back or not, cause it was a very long drive. I hadn't been to the Longbranch in about 30 years. It's pretty much exactly as I remembered it as a kid. Yes, my parents took me to bars as a kid. Thanks mom and dad. I just repeated it by taking my kids. Frog legs were pretty greasy but what do you expect, they're frog legs. The prime rib was off the charts good. Worth it if you're in the area. The location and venue are odd...in a bar, across the street from the church, in a small town of 20 or so houses, off the beaten path, surrounded my corn fields...easily 10miles from all the other surrounding small towns. Worth a trip, everything I have had on the menu is great! My husband says the prime rib is excellent, even goes so far as to say it is the best he has ever had. And...cheap! Even though it is in a small bar, kids are welcome. Don't try to go on Wednesday night...Taco night is VERY popular, and usually requires a wait outside to get in. Over priced,terrible food. Ordered steak $23.99 it had no flavor and mostly fat. My brother order fish and was super greasy. they put in a second order and it was just as greasy.(dripping off the fish) salad bar for $4.99 and you had to wait for them to bring you a clean plate every time you went back up to the salad bar. We hadn't been there for a long time, so last night we decided to take a drive and Have a nice dinner. Boy were we disappointed. We were immediately seated, which was nice because we didn't have reservations, and our waitress was very good....but that's about the only positive remarks I can make. The bread they brought to the table was smashed and seemed old, instead of butter they serve nasty margarine and our fried chicken dinners were salty and just not that good. In addition, the breast in my wife's dinner looked odd and had very little meat, her vegetables were soggy and tasteless, and my baked potato was the size of a tennis ball. Having no real butter to put on it was a disappointment too. This place is definitely not The Longbranch I remembered from their glory days and we won't be going back.
