I recently spent six nights at the Fairfax Inn and loved it. Very clean, big rooms. It's located right downtown where all the fabulous restaurants and live music clubs are. Even though it's so close to the action it's very quite, I was never disturbed by any outside noise. I was there during the most recent 6.1 earthquake and there was no added charge for the early morning ride and excitement. I survived just fine. Everything about this place worked for me. Very comfortable bed, super large tub, big towels, TV and a very nice light breakfast consisting of juice, coffee, toast, buns and so on. The host, Jay Raman was very nice and very accommodating. I enjoyed the place so I extended two more nights and will most def be going back. Also I found Fairfax to be a little jewel. My passions were great place to stay, great resturant options and cycling. It was epic.

Location, location, location. Right in the middle of downtown Fairfax. Park your car in the Inn's ample parking and forget it. Proprietress made booking and checking in a breeze. Vaulted ceilings and whirlpool tube make the room particularly inviting. Went out for brunch, so next time I'll have to try the Inn's continental breakfast.

The good: easy to make reservations and arrangements were clear. The Inn is convenient and clean. It is charming and has some very lovely touches that you would never get in a hotel. Parking is easy and reasonable ($10 per day). The beds are comfortable and supportive--a key element as my friend has had extensive back surgery. And, breakfast is included and served on the lovely patio. When my cousins came to visit, I had them stay at the Inn. They raved about the breakfast! My friends raved about the great lighting in the bathroom. What to expect: there is no elevator and you have to carry your bags up a staircase that can be challenging if you have much large or heavy luggage. The floors are not completely even in all rooms. Some are just a little bit off and are carpeted. It's easy to trip over the change in floor level, as there is no marking. Nice surprise: there is a cut in the wall to show the original knob and tube wiring. It's got a plexiglass cover. But the preservation of history and education is a lovely idea.

The bed and pillows were genuinely comfortable, temperature control worked perfectly, and the lighting options made the room feel adaptable and cozy. The artwork throughout adds charm and personality. The back patio is delightful -- ideal for morning coffee -- and the breakfast room is bright and light-filled, which makes the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming. Breakfast deserves special mention: the best European-style spread I've had at a small property -- fresh pastries, yogurt, cereal, berries, hard-boiled eggs, and good coffee every morning. Quiet, clean, and elegantly run.

My son loves the interior with the walkways visible from the ground level - one could say he was impressed with his first view. The staff at the front desk is always so friendly and welcoming. They are why I've chosen to start again and again, even when it leaves us farther from our final destination. Every check-in, every entry truly leaves one feeling welcome. The gals I've had the pleasure of talking with remember us from day to day, it really does make for a wonderful stay. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, always clean and stocked. Daily cleaning is a treat with many hotels skipping days now. The restaurant is convenient for dinner and offers a very nice breakfast included with your stays. They kindly answered my questions and gave me tips about the hotel's amenities. The service during happy hour and breakfast were great. My room was clean, modern, and very spacious. There was a living room/office area in the front, and a bedroom in the back, separated by a bathroom. The furniture was spotless, comfortable, and in good condition. The bed was very comfortable, had plenty of pillows, and nice clean sheets. There was also a refrigerator, and two TVs! I stopped by for the free happy hour and they had drinks, chips, salsa, pretzels, peanut butter, veggies, and dip. It was a nice way to unwind after a long day. The breakfast was also free, and included things like oatmeal, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, fruit, yogurt, and toast. Juice, coffee, and tea too! It was a really great stay, and I hope to be back.

Tons of noise from the hallway - heard every perso going to their rooms. Decor is spartan - utilitarian chic - no microwave, mattress sagged and felt cheap. I'm local and I've been to the rooftop bar several times - hurricane force winds all the time, not a place you'd really want to hang out for a long time. Signed up for Bonvoy because of the $400 eGift card which was applied to my prospective room before I booked with an itemized breakdown. After booking, it reads that Bonvoy DOES NOT apply the gift card to my first booking - deceptive. It's the newest hotel in San Rafael, but it's substandard.

Mini fridge had a glacier of ice buildup on the freezer, indicating high room humidity. Bathroom sliding glass door closes on its own, cutting off ventilation after taking a shower. Toilet seat was loose so it slid around. Our fire alarm went off at night because we had zero air circulation in a stuffy humid air chamber, which led to staff asking us to vacate under the assumption we had been smoking in the unit which we had not. We had to ask them to call the manager who ordered them to tell us to vacate and had to explain the problems with the unit that caused the false alarm. Parking lot is tiny, and the ticketing/gate system doesn't work oftentimes, leading people to have to back out into traffic to get out of the lot. The desk staff seems really nice and it's a shame, because we got the impression that the management is not so nice and mismanages the property by not giving their staff the resources they need to maintain the units or handle issues with the furnishings. There's lots of reviews of things being broken in various rooms and ours had a similar experience. It looks nice, but doesn't get maintained well, and management is quick to jump on you which results in an incredibly inhospitable and hostile atmosphere. I imagine working here is also not pleasant and I can pick up on the vibes that the staff are stressed.
