Enjoying BBQ oysters on the coast

I recently spent six nights at the Fairfax Inn and loved it. Very clean, big rooms. It's located right downtown where all the fabulous restaurants and live music clubs are. Even though it's so close to the action it's very quite, I was never disturbed by any outside noise. I was there during the most recent 6.1 earthquake and there was no added charge for the early morning ride and excitement. I survived just fine. Everything about this place worked for me. Very comfortable bed, super large tub, big towels, TV and a very nice light breakfast consisting of juice, coffee, toast, buns and so on. The host, Jay Raman was very nice and very accommodating. I enjoyed the place so I extended two more nights and will most def be going back. Also I found Fairfax to be a little jewel. My passions were great place to stay, great resturant options and cycling. It was epic.

Location, location, location. Right in the middle of downtown Fairfax. Park your car in the Inn's ample parking and forget it. Proprietress made booking and checking in a breeze. Vaulted ceilings and whirlpool tube make the room particularly inviting. Went out for brunch, so next time I'll have to try the Inn's continental breakfast.

Eric made my birthday even more special by having the fireplace burning and some bubbly waiting on ice when we got there. The showers were huge with two shower heads- one on each side. Ultimate luxury. I loved the rustic homey feel they had. There were rolled up blankets everywhere, they had a little game room where we played scrabble and jenga before bed. Breakfast was included and they had two different types of homemade quiche and something from everyone- bagels, yogurt, individual fresh fruit cups, and cookies. We hope to come back again some day! The accommodations were as expected for an older building extended and renovated at different times, with the kitchen/dining area being renovated during our stay. Yes, there were a few cobwebs here and there but the staff and the views were amazing!

The bed and pillows were genuinely comfortable, temperature control worked perfectly, and the lighting options made the room feel adaptable and cozy. The artwork throughout adds charm and personality. The back patio is delightful -- ideal for morning coffee -- and the breakfast room is bright and light-filled, which makes the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming. Breakfast deserves special mention: the best European-style spread I've had at a small property -- fresh pastries, yogurt, cereal, berries, hard-boiled eggs, and good coffee every morning. Quiet, clean, and elegantly run.

The good: easy to make reservations and arrangements were clear. The Inn is convenient and clean. It is charming and has some very lovely touches that you would never get in a hotel. Parking is easy and reasonable ($10 per day). The beds are comfortable and supportive--a key element as my friend has had extensive back surgery. And, breakfast is included and served on the lovely patio. When my cousins came to visit, I had them stay at the Inn. They raved about the breakfast! My friends raved about the great lighting in the bathroom. What to expect: there is no elevator and you have to carry your bags up a staircase that can be challenging if you have much large or heavy luggage. The floors are not completely even in all rooms. Some are just a little bit off and are carpeted. It's easy to trip over the change in floor level, as there is no marking. Nice surprise: there is a cut in the wall to show the original knob and tube wiring. It's got a plexiglass cover. But the preservation of history and education is a lovely idea.

I stayed here once a month for a week at a time over the last year for work; it started to feel…read morelike my apartment or second home, so perhaps my review is a bit biased/higher, but here's the scoop from my experiences: - The front desk staff are some of the most kind and friendly people ever! Since I was a bit of a regular, they always knew about when I'd leave and come back and if I was late or something was off my schedule, they'd always smile and check in with me. It made me feel so much safer traveling alone knowing that there were people that knew who I was and about when I'd be around. They were never nosy, but always caring. It was always a relief to see the same person when I'd come in on a late Sunday night flight, especially after a flight delay. - The rooms at the back of the hotel (room 518-522) are in the way back of the hotel and the trash service and various delivery trucks come at all hours of the night to take out trash or pick up/drop off stuff which can be pretty loud. I personally liked staying back in this area because the trucks helped me wake up for early meetings, but some might find that disturbing during sleep. Corner rooms (18) have a window in the living area and the bedroom while most of the rest of the rooms have only one window in the bedroom, so the living area can be pretty dark if you keep the atrium window shade drawn-- this is also standard for pretty much every Embassy Suite. But, I will say, I feel a bit safer in my hotel having the door open to an atrium instead of walking down a long hallway. Living areas in the rooms are darker, but if you're willing to have the atrium curtains open, it's fine. - Rooms: Overall they're good and consistent. I never had an issue with bugs, broken things, or any other major maintenance issue. Nothing was outstanding or especially exciting, but things were always consistent. The room refrigerators were always working which was a plus. Things were always clean on arrival for me. - Breakfast is the standard Hilton breakfast with the buffet option and then the ordering station. The dining area there is large and comfortable and the food is standard for all other Embassy Suites I've stayed in around the country-- it's consistent and has plenty of options when you're there a lot. They do not have a guest use waffle iron like some other Hiltons do. - Evening Happy Hour and once/twice a week live music. There's an evening happy hour that is great and you can either sit at the bar or in the area at a table for a drink or two along with snacks. They have some great live music once/twice a week and it's very relaxing. People are friendly and service is great during this time. - Housekeeping was great when it came but I think due to staffing, it wasn't always available every day. This I have found at all Hiltons (and Hyatts) I've stayed at over the last few years and has been a change since Covid. However, whenever I requested housekeeping through the texts I got from the hotel at check in or asked at the front desk, they always made it happen. Once a room was low on shampoo and I asked them to refill and all the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash was filled up when I came back to my room. Another time I had a lot of trash and asked for a trash pick up and they did that along with a full clean up that day. I don't know if they can always make that happen for the whole hotel, but I never had a problem with it. - Online check in/check out: Hilton has done a great job with their app and I found it to be very helpful before, during, and after my stays. I have liked that I can pre-check in on the app and then pick my room. It shows me what extras I get with being a Diamond level and the keyless check in was great so that I didn't have to keep track of a key. I'm not always a fan of having an app for every business/hotel/restaurant, but since I use Hilton a ton, it's been really helpful. It's also easy to contact them if you need an invoice after a stay, but I also noticed they consistently email your invoice after your stay, which is also nice for work travel. - Parking: easy, accessible, safe, clean, and well lit. I never had an issue with theft but when in California or closer to a busy area I wouldn't leave anything valuable out in the open anyway. There was never an issue with car break ins while I stayed there. - Other amenities: The pool is clean, always had clean towels, and was a nice thing to have access to. I never used the gym-- just went on local hikes/walks. - Local area: There's a great take out Chinese restaurant up the road and a Bahn Mi Zon down the road the other direction that is very good. The farmer's market is once a week just down the street and easy to walk to. There's also a park that is walking distance if you want to walk somewhere from the hotel (along with some sidewalks for different areas to walk that are safe. There's a Safeway not too far in a large shopping center as well.

He assisted me during checkout and made the entire process smooth and efficient. He was courteous, attentive, and handled everything quickly while ensuring all the details were correct. It's clear he takes pride in his work, and that level of care really stood out. One feature I really appreciated was the ability to skip the front desk at check-in and go straight to your room. That convenience makes travel much easier. Breakfast was another highlight, the omelet station was excellent. Fresh, made-to-order, and a great way to start the day. The only small caveat was that they ran out of English breakfast tea, and the cinnamon rolls were in short supply. Not a deal breaker, just something to note. Overall, the hotel was clean and comfortable, and the combination of great service, convenience, and strong breakfast experience made it an easy five stars. I would absolutely stay here again.

Hotel confirmed they'd honor third party reservation. First pros: When we finally found lobby, we were greeted by a feeling of elevated comfort, & elegance w/ the black-coated front desk staff, earth of faux fire place, leather couches, & fancy chairs. Around the corner are the lowered lights of a bar & grill w/ lovely accents of polished wood throughout. Large glass windows surround a beautiful blue outdoor pool with hot tub in garden setting. In lobby, 2 options of chilled filtered water, 1 plane and 1 infused w/ fresh melon, a nice touch to give good 1st impressions. They said it's ok to invite hubby and son to join my daughter & grandkids & I to enjoy jacuzzi, even though they weren't staying; seemed generous, + towels provided. Open till 10pm. There were nicely scented toiletries in bathroom & MAX, HBO, YOUTUBE, and other streaming services, free w/ your stay. MANY CONS: Our room had ugly window view to parking lot; we asked if we could change to double queen pool view, they said no, hotel only has single King rooms w/ pool view and any others were booked. Ok, we did Book last minute. Next day, Service Tech said there had been plenty rooms avail. w/ double queen, pool view, but 3d floor + our room would soon be renovated, and why it was sub par. Why the lie? Jacuzzi: We visited the area earlier in eve, 6:40 pm when it looked lovely and aglow with gas fire pits & other outdoor ambient lighting... sadly, spa not hot, and just one jet working when i kept pushing button to start them? Service tech said they only come on w/ sensor w/ more folks in tub (whaaat?) he said, jets won't come on at night because of chemicals they add to hot tub (whaaat?). I hoped by AM, spa'd be hot so we could enjoy our AM coffee & take a dip! By AM it was so cold by pool we did not want risk of experience night before w/ cold spa, so resorted to regular tub soak in room. Sadly, tub plug broken and won't fill! Settled for shower :( No working bathroom fan! Not good for steamy mirror nor other smelly reasons fan is needed in there. Room window made of thin single pane glass that if child or anyone fell into, it'd easily break and we'd fall to cement, 3 floors down; no screen on window that opened 3 inches. Also large chips out of paint on window wall, size of apple. Heater tricky to get fan low, less noisy, & temp right. It loudly blew cold air and had to be turned off. No working USB charger ports, only 1 defunct port & service tech said it was disabled in anticipation of remodel, & also why furniture was old, and my mattress felt like a heavy person slept in it creating very bad dip; mattress needs changing! Fridge freezer, though coated in ice, not cold enough for ice cream. Ours went from frozen at store to melted beyond eatability, w/ in 2 hrs. While hubby awaited our return from shopping he tried to get beer at bar, but found it closing by 9:pm. Instead of letting him know he'd closed out his cash register & that my hubby could get beer to take to room from front desk, bartender rudely said, "i just closed, sorry!" instead of suggesting beer at front desk. We did not realize was possible till too late. Before checkout we waited over an hour for service tech to come look @ bathtub; we called 3 times over that hour & each time, told they were sending someone. When tech finally showed up he explained all about up coming remodel. Why the sub par room? Punishment for using 3d party? With each issue w/ room, we tried calling front desk for help. 1st time, when we asked for more bath towels, no one'd answer, only machine says staff is w/ other clients, even @ 2:00am when i wanted heat but couldn't get cold air to stop blowing. No one ever answered @ that hour. I gave up & just got extra blanket from closet (there was only one!). I thought, they're sick of hearing from room 309. When checking down stairs, staff were not visibly busy..... usually 2 agents working, just typing on their computers & no guest in front of them. Service tech said, trouble with phones was part of future renovation issue. When we'd finally reached staff over phone to ask for 2 more bath towels (since we're 4 and there were only 2 towels), they brought 2 tiny floor mat towels! We had to physically go ask for bath towels! Con: My granddaughter held bed quilt up to light of window and horrible stained filth showed through; see pic's. They tried to offer minimal points toward discounted stay only to be used on hotel site, where dilapidated hotel costs more money. Not worth it we'd do better at home. Not recommended.

Nothing about food, TV service, location of ice makers, etc. Incidentally with three floors they only had ice makers on the first floor The one lounge chair was wedged in between the bed and the patio door, but if you wanted to have your coffee there in the morning, no where to put down your cup. The in room coffee maker had enough to cartridges to make 3 cups of coffee in a room that has capacity for 4 people Only paper cups for the coffee Limited channels available, and if you wanted to access Prime or Netflix, you had to sign into your own account or pay a fee Only enough towels for 3 people Terrible lighting throughout, with the least strong lighting specially reserved for over the one sink in the anteroom to the bathroom, the only place available to do your makeup. Only grab and go food with long common tables if you wanted to eat in the lobby area. I paid over $20 for one medium sized coffee, a small blueberry scone and a one serving size of yogurt.
