The back patio is delightful -- ideal for morning coffee -- and the breakfast room is bright and light-filled, which makes the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming. We had friends in from Los Angeles and they stayed here at my suggestion. I met them to help get them parked and carry their bags upstairs. They were there for two nights. The good: easy to make reservations and arrangements were clear. The Inn is convenient and clean. It is charming and has some very lovely touches that you would never get in a hotel. Parking is easy and reasonable ($10 per day). The beds are comfortable and supportive--a key element as my friend has had extensive back surgery. And, breakfast is included and served on the lovely patio. When my cousins came to visit, I had them stay at the Inn. They raved about the breakfast! My friends raved about the great lighting in the bathroom. What to expect: there is no elevator and you have to carry your bags up a staircase that can be challenging if you have much large or heavy luggage. The floors are not completely even in all rooms. Some are just a little bit off and are carpeted. It's easy to trip over the change in floor level, as there is no marking. Nice surprise: there is a cut in the wall to show the original knob and tube wiring. It's got a plexiglass cover. But the preservation of history and education is a lovely idea. read more

It is a very cozy spot in the little downtown of San Anselmo, where many local shops and restaurants exist. It is convenient to go to San Francisco if you have a car, but a bus stop is nearby that connects to regional transit. The owners are wonderful. A nice continental breakfast was provided, and the weather was nice, so I enjoyed my coffee on the outside patio. The owners are also helpful and provide transit and schedules for the Sausalito ferry. read more

Our good friend booked room 221 as an overnight getaway for me and my new husband since we didn't have time for a proper honeymoon right away. Our room was adorable!!! The bed was cozy and comfy. The room was on the second floor and had one window air conditioner so by the afternoon it was kinda stuffy because the sun was shining right into the windows. WiFi was non existent. Shower head could have been better quality but these are minor issues. Loved that we were able to walk the Main street and see all the quaint little shops! Great location. I had a good friend visiting and he booked a room weeks in advance with a confirmation. I went to the hotel earlier in the day to bring a gift basket for him to put in the room as is customary in my family. When I called the front desk person to the window she said "I guess I'll come down" - then she told me there was no reservation under that name and suggested my friend may have an alias (omg). When my friend arrive they did not have a room for him although he had his confirmation and they made no attempt to be kind about it. I will not suggest this place again for visitors. It's not well run and the front desk person doesn't understand the Hospitality business at all. We made the best of it and he got a great room at the Aqua with amazing service and a free round of drinks at the bar while waiting for the room to get ready. read more

I think this was our favorite place we stayed on our trip!! We were in room 221 and it was the cutest and coziest room! The bed was comfortable and we slept with the windows open. They had a lovely spread for breakfast which included the usual cereal, bagels, fresh fruit but also some hot dishes....the (spinach?) quiche was really yummy. We loved it so much we tried to stay another day but they didn't have any rooms available. Staff was friendly and helpful. I hope I have a chance to stay there again sometime. Nice place. It's a cute place, with decently comfortable beds, however I think it could use a "face lift." The rooms were generally clean and well kept but a few rooms did smell a little "old." While the beds left a little to be desired for, the breakfast part of this B&B was on point. The staff as a whole were friendly but their efforts where undermined by the owner. The Inn could definitely use some modernization as I had to call multiple times to get my reservation confirmed. The Inn could also benefit from increased levels of communication as the owner continuously made up BS rules that were not written down anywhere or communicated prior midway through our stay. Having said that, it's a cute place with a nice location on San Anselmo Ave, in the middle of all the "Hustle and Bustle" of the city. ;) And NO, I will not return. ;-( read more

This is a quiet little inn in the middle of a quiet little town. The two people I spoke with at the reception desk were friendly, and the rooms were kept very clean and tidy. Our room was a blue and yellow with Mucha artwork, and had a small TV and private bath. Breakfast was fine, but not very plentiful. We had coffee, fruit, and toast. If you wanted anything more, you had to order it from the menu. Maybe I'm just spoiled with really good buffet style breakfasts, but I guess something is better than nothing! UPDATE: Flat screen TVs - you might want to ask if your room has been outfitted. After about a dozen stays here, I'll say I'm a fan. The rooms are small, some with a "bath down the hall" setup, but that keeps the room price down. The included breakfast is a nice touch. If you balk at that, keep in mind that $100-130/night in central Marin will NOT get you a spa room at the Four Seasons. Do know that you'll need to call ahead if coming in late. They just won't answer the phone after around 8 pm. I've called later only to get locked out. read more

We stayed here on Saturday, July 20, 2019. The staff was very friendly, accommodating and gave very thorough instructions regarding parking located half a block away. The room we stayed in was large and comfortable with a king sized bed and a couch that converted into a twin bed. The hotel itself was clean, though dated....narrow stairwell, noticeable plaster patches on the walls & missing a few amenities such as a hair dryer and in-room coffee service, but provided some kind of breakfast that we didn't stay for. There was no view except for a concrete wall. For the $239 price we paid for one night, the hotel was OK. The town is very attractive, though. I would recommend staying here if you don't have high standards & don't expect luxurious accommodations. read more

My wife and I stayed in room 235 for two nights in mid October 2014. The room was small but comfortable enough for us. Evidently, there had been flooding from the roof several weeks before and the damage had been patched, but not fully repaired. The room was very quiet until about 4:30am when one of the local businesses started to load something or things onto several trucks with back-up beepers going on and off until about 6:30am. This happened both mornings. We informed the management of the situation on the first morning and were told that this room is one of the quietest in the Inn, but that they would look into the situation. When we checked out the following morning the person at the desk was not interested in the quality of our stay. The breakfast was present but uninteresting. read more

A decent night's sleep both nights. (Room 235) A quaint wire bedframe for a queen-size centers the room, there's a kind of deskspace with a nice bright positionable work light. En suite in my room (not in all rooms) small but serviceable, more on that in the photos. Sink is in the main room, instead of the ensuite, which I've seen many times in other hotels but still always seems jarring. Two problems with the room: drippy showerhead next to a sign suggesting five minutes showers, and a hairdryer mounted to the wall by the sink plus a sign saying "this plug doesn't work, use the hairdryer in the bedside table" but, no hairdryer in the bedside table. I unplugged the TV and was just able to get the hairdryer plugged in there, so yay me. Left a hairdryer kludge note for future visitors on top of the Gideon bible. Planning on letting the innkeeper know their shower needs a new washer. Oh: older building. When neighbor flushed toilet and I was in the shower I got a flash of hot water. Rooms on the second story are difficult accessibility wise, stairs only. Maybe they deserve 3 stars, it was annoying but not horribly impossible, so. *shrug* read more

I have been staying at The Inn for over 20 years. My stay this past weekend was dismal! I arrived before 6 PM and no one was at the front desk to greet me. I called the number posted at the front desk 3 times but no one picked up. There was dust on the stainless steel bottom of the bedside lamp so thick you could write in it! Saturday morning when I went down to get breakfast there was no one there and there was no water in the hot water container so I went next-door to a restaurant for breakfast. The same story Sunday. When I went to check out, there was no one there and despite the fact that I called the number listed no one came to check me out. I ended up tossing my keys on the desk and left a message asking someone to confirm that they had received my keys and then I was officially checked out. No one ever called me back. I called when I got home to verify that they had gotten my keys. Contrary to what you expect at an Inn or a bed and breakfast which is hospitality and caring (and breakfast!), it felt like a ghost town and there was no cordiality at all. read more

I used this hotel for my sister and her husband a few months ago. I've done this in years past but not since the new ownership in I think 2014. The room was clean. That's the best I can say about what used to be a quaint and friendly hotel. Staff was never available. The breakfast the first day was acceptable with some sort of quiche. However, the next day the food looked like leftovers from the day before. When I called to give them feedback, in a very low-key and friendly thought-you-might-like-to-know kind of way, the woman was defensive and said the evening staff person did not speak English and was uncomfortable with guests. Didn't seem like a good management decision to hire such a person, nor was it a good excuse for unfriendly service or poor breakfast food. Then when I was doing my taxes in March, I discovered they had not only billed me for a one night downpayment when I made the reservation two months before their stay last fall, but they had charged me full amount for all four nights and did not give me credit for the first night. I have tried to call several times but I get no response. I will never use this hotel again and I do not recommend it to anyone else. read more

We've stayed at the San Anselmo Inn twice now since Christmas, 2010. On both occasions the rooms were quaint, quiet and clean. The beds were quite comfortable. We enjoyed the included breakfast on our second stay. Staff was friendly and helpful. The furniture is an eclectic mixture of types, but it all seems to work together. It gives the feeling of staying in someone's house instead of a sterile hotel. The hotel's location was near where we needed to be, and overnight validated parking at a nearby bank is convenient. We give it 4/5 stars because the rates were a *little* high. Lack of free wifi was a drag. But we would stay there again. read more

We just spent the most relaxing 3 days at the San Anselmo Inn B&B. It was very clean, comfortable, convenient to walk to everything in town and a great location to explore the many sights of Marin County. The rooms were fresh and the bed was very comfortable. We were on the first floor and slept with the window open, and felt very safe. We didn't see any bad elements in town, it's very quiet. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful, and knowledgeable of the history of the Inn and the area. The breakfasts were wonderful. Every morning included a buffet of homemade quiche or frittata, deliciously prepared and served by the innkeeper, along with plates of freshly cut fruits, an array of homemade muffins and breads, hard boiled eggs, juices, cereals, yogurts, and coffee. Many of the items were prepared using a variety of homegrown veggies and herbs, which was nice. Parking is free and a short half-block from the inn, and there is plenty of space to unload your bags at the front door and ok to park there for a short time while you get settled. Really, the walk is no biggie. The only thing I would improve, and it really wasn't a big deal for us, was that I'd upgrade the sheets. They were ok, but not as soft and crisp as I'd like. And the bathroom was small, but it got the job done. Again, no biggie. All in all, we'd highly recommend the San Anselmo Inn for a nice, relaxing getaway. While this cute in is in a great location- and is reasonably priced on bed&breakfast .com I was disappointed to find that their rooms do not include Air conditioning. On a summer night the second floor room was incredibly hot, even though the temperature outside had decreased greatly. This was very disappointing as I always look forward to a special breakfast at B&B's. The place could also use a nice place for guests to sit out and enjoy the sunshine. Found this place last Sec. on my phone. Called and the guy who answered the phone was very polite and nice. He even reduced the rate from $130/night to $99.00 without a beat. So I booked it and drove over. San Anselmo is a cute little town close to my cousin's house so the location made sense. The building is old, very old. The front desk was very polite and checked me in quick and with no issues. The hotel itself is dingy and outdated. It looks like they have not lifted a finger in the past 30+ years. My room was about the size of a large closet and the sink was in the bedroom not the bathroom. The bathroom barley had enough room from the toilet which was one of those toilets you find in a public bathroom. Luckily the room was clean and the front desk had come in to turn the heat on prior to my arrival which was good. Ahhh the bed, well the bed was probably there since 1910 and felt like it the pillows were a feather shy of a full hen to say the least. Lots of cheap and nasty bead spreads which found themselves on the floor as soon as I got into the room. There was a chepo small frig in the closet that sounded like it had major indigestion all night. The shower was clean This place is not a bed and breakfast it's a "Cardboard bed and "continental breakfast". The lady who attended the continental breakfast was very charming and nice. Over all the few interactions I had with the staff and service were just fine. The issue here is the lack of modernization or just rehab. So in a nutshell I guess if you are just looking for a place to crash this place is about equal to a motel 6, it's also fairly inexpensive for the area. On the other hand if you are looking for a romantic B&B or even a place that you intend to stay in for more than a few nights I would recommend Larkspur Hotel. I have stayed there before and it is way better. You may pay an extra $30 but it is worth it in my opinion PS. you can hear easily hear the person in the room across from you or next to you fart! read more

OK... overall the BnB was decent and quaint. The breakfast was amazing. The staff was attentive. The owner is a jerk. My TV didn't work. I came in late the first night a sent an email about it and NO reply. In the morning I mentioned it to the staff in the kitchen and they said they would look into it. That evening the room had been made up but still the TV didn't work. I call and a nice guy came and spent a half hour trying to fix it with no positive result. When checking out I asked for a 'modest' correction to the room rate and was told only the owner could do it. I asked that they be notified of my request. I heard nothing. I sent a second email, this time requesting an adjustment... no reply. It is now a week since I check out.... NEVER TO RETURN... I will now see what my credit card company can do for me... read more

I have stayed at the San Anselmo Inn a couple of times. Bed and Breakfasts are not really my thing...although I did enjoy watching Newheart. Some rooms have bathrooms and some don't. Again not really my thing unless I'm in traveling Europe. Every room has a different. I think we stayed in hat room...If you like B & B's I think you'll like this one. read more

I am a little confused by some peoples negatives reviews, however they were over a year ago. That being said my boyfriend and I stayed there last weekend and we thought it was absolutely wonderful! We had a bit of a late check in and were using the place as a launching spot to our day trip in SF. He lives in Santa Rosa and I live in Santa Cruz so it was a nice middle. When I arrived there was no attendent but everything was left for me with my key and detailed instruction on the proceedings and goings on of the hotel. Parking is just around the corner and really not a big deal, definietly closer than walking down the hall at a large hotel. We stayed in rom #227 and yes it was small but to us perfect. We heard no one while we were there and noted that it was so quite. My boyfriend is 6'4 and had no issues with the bed or the size of the room. The bed and pillows were comfy and we slept extremely well. There is a good size closet with a dresser and mini-frig and the bathroom is cute is quiant. This is a turn of the century hotel and it looks and feels like one. From the decorations to the bedding you feel like you are in the early 1900's in someones bedroom. We loved it! Now to the breakfast part. The food was wonderful! When we were getting food the hostess was bringing our fresh quiche and the homebaked breads were amazing. Lots of fresh fruit and the coffee was on point. We enjoyed that it was cozy and we sat by the window so we could people watch as we ate. We enjoyed it so much that we plan on coming back in the near future! read more

I decided to take a last-minute trip to the San Anselmo / Point Reyes area and needed a place to stay. Fortunately, I was able to book a spot at this inn. I must say that it was a pleasant surprise! The inn was clean and comfortable. It is simple with a small lobby, small rooms, and no frills. The bathrooms were stocked with nice toiletries. My favorite aspects of the inn are the employees and the breakfast. The folks at the front desk were very nice and clearly took pride in their work. They were helpful and offered suggestions about where to go in town. And the breakfast was a really nice surprise! They featured home cooked foods, fresh cut fruit, good coffee, and deserts. They baked some of the goods themselves! It was way beyond a continental breakfast you may get at other places. The biggest negative is that you can hear outside sounds, especially if you are in the back of the hotel. I didn't mind this much, but if you are a really light sleeper, you might get woken up. Even though the staff were pleasant, I would not stay here again. The Inn is in desperate need of an upgrade and to be deep cleaned. You can keep the quaint/old decor but with new hardware, fixtures, paint, etc.. For starters, the bed sunk in the middle, blow dryer didn't work the next morning at 5:30 AM and no one was available to get me a blow dryer, carpet and bedding did not smell fresh and clean. Also could not get the TV volume to work. It would be helpful to have instructions if there is a special way to operate the TV. The garbage truck that came at 5:30 AM was right outside our window (which had to be open since there is no a/c in the room) was loud enough to wake the dead. Had I not been getting up early, I would have been very upset to be woken by that horrendous noise!!! Would not recommend anyone that cannot do stairs to stay here. Lots of steps to take to get upstairs and if you are in the room at the end of the hall (235) you'll have to take extra steps to get there. Just make sure the blow dryer works if you need to use it. read more

We booked on hotels.com. We were shown a room without a bath and a funky smell. When I started to leave, the manager upgraded us to a much nicer room with its own bath and no smell. The breakfast was very good. I would stay here again. read more

A few days before our stay, my dear boyfriend booked us a night at San Anselmo Inn for a nice, peaceful, romantic weekend getaway in Marin. Unfortunately, we had a disappointing room experience. We stayed in room #114, across the hallway was a communal bathroom for visitors and restaurant guests. Our private bathroom (view photos) was very small, dimly lit, and no counter space to place our hygiene products; so I ended up putting a hand towel over the toilet's tank lid to get by. The sink was missing a lift up rod that controls the stopper drain; which didn't work and was immovable. The badly cracked sink was clogged and took a long time to drain. Our room's window view was a parking lot with a dumpster, and lots of garbage and recycling bins. Due to where our room was located, our wake up call were lots of people traffic going to/from the restaurant and communal bathroom in the the hallway. The nice part about our stay was the short, walking distance to Valenti & Co. Ristorante for dinner; the service and food was great. Also, the breakfast had delicious frittatas. In summary, I recommend the restaurant, but NOT San Anselmo Inn #114 due of its noisome bedroom location, poor bathroom lighting/space/maintenance/inconveniences, and unsightly window view. read more
