This was a hugely regrettable experience, with much of the blame laid at the feet of the hotel. The problems started at the time I made the reservation. I asked the agent if there was another room above mine and was told no. I was also told the room was very quiet. These were both lies. The room was promoted and booked as a cottage, and that implies several things, starting with an understanding that it's a small free-standing building with a modicum of privacy. That was not the case. Our "cottage" was in-fact a ground-floor unit in a fourplex, with people upstairs and artificial turf in front. We shared patio space with our neighbor. He was cleaning his feet as we arrived and immediately asked if he could borrow our outdoor furniture as he was planning to entertain family, which he later did. But the biggest problem--other than the lies at the time of the booking--was upstairs. There was a toddler who spent hours doing wind sprints up and down the uncarpeted floor, and soundproofing was minimal. So, between the garden party next door and Junior Jetrod overhead, we did not have a restful late afternoon and early evening. After 9 pm or so, things quieted down enough to eventually fall asleep. Hotel staff did its best to make things better, and I was permitted to cancel a second night without penalty. But we never should have been there in the first place. Had the reservations agent told the truth, I would have looked elsewhere. read more

Even though I don't have anything in the vicinity to compare it to, I probably will not return - cons heavily outweigh the pros. Pro - prime location, near downtown but slightly tucked away - decent sized room (mine was Spruce Room) - can possibly override 2 night minimum stay Con - staff are really only available until 8pm, even though one can check-in until 10pm, I could not reach anyone after 8pm. - stained, old linen (curtain, sofa) but worst part was the dampness in the sheets. I could smell my pillowcase and trust me, I don't have a great sense of smell - alarm clock is not working. Granted not many people use them anymore, maybe at least make it not show an error msg? - jet tub takes FOREVER to fill (45+ min) for a spa bath, let alone to the jet line. The water pressure seems okay, the faucet just not efficient. - no microwave - no laundry bag was provided in my room - no AC - pricey for the value ($295 a night on weekend), but I think around here it's the norm read more

Third time staying here,came for our 23rd anniversary April 28-29. Stayed in room 204,Buckeye room.Luckily we got early check in.It was great,off season, so downtown not busy at all on a Friday afternoon.The staff gave us recommendations where to eat and provided us with a map,they were very friendly. So quiet, only noise we heard was maybe a dryer or washing machine humming very early in the morning.No street noise at all,it was awesome. We stayed one night here on our way back to San Francisco. The location of the hotel is great. The condition of the hotel, not so much. The outdoor patio looked like it hadn't been swept in quite a while. And it should be stated this is a shared space where enough walk to a door in your room through a space where you also share a coffee pot(huh?) To get to the ice machine you must walk to the main entrance, go down stairs and it is located through a door in a storage closet. The room was okay and it appears bathrooms were updated a few years ago. Happy we weren't staying any longer. read more

I was extremely disappointed to learn that this hotel does not allow service dogs on their property. I understand a no pet policy if it's not a service animal, and I would've been fine with a temporary cleaning fee hold. I called to double check their policy and was sadly turned away. In fact, the woman over the phone wasn't even 100% sure if they allowed it but simply stated "probably not" allowed and that I'd need a tag or something proving she is a trained service dog. That's not required under law, and specifically, one cannot ask a disabled person to prove that the animal is a service animal. Even airlines don't give me a hard time about this. I have a severe allergy that requires the retrieval of an epi-pen in the event of an emergency, and my dog has been trained to do so. None of this needed to be disclosed, per ADA requirements. In fact, I implore management to review the ADA requirements, which state: "Under the ADA, State and local governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public generally must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is allowed to go." - https://www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-2010-requirements/#where-service-animals-are-allowed What a shame to be rejected simply because I require my dog to be with me at all times. read more

We enjoyed our 2-night stay which was booked through Expedia. We did not get to select our specific room, but were happy to be given room 208 which had access to a shared porch with a view of the bay. However, the outdoor furniture on the porch is placed at a level where the view while seated is obstructed by the porch railing which stopped it from being the ideal hang out spot that it was designed to be. The Gables Inn is rather minimalist in its rooms and amenity offerings. When going for this aesthetic, it is important that everything be done just right in order to pull off the level of luxury desired. Unfortunately, I felt like in most areas, the Inn missed the mark a bit. The experience was still enjoyable, and I might stay again if I found a promotion, but you just felt like it wasn't quite all that it tried to be. For example, despite having a lovely lobby, there is no breakfast or wine service included. The in-room coffee maker had just one choice of coffee, no teas, and the cups provided were 5 oz cups when the smallest setting on the coffee-maker was 8 oz causing hot liquid to overflow the cup. Everything else in the room was functional, but walls were scuffed or painted in spots with mismatched paint. The water pressure was lacking as others have mentioned. The bed was very comfortable, but aside from one small secretary chair, there was nowhere else to sit in the room. The check-in process was smooth but a bit cold. No small talk about why we were in town. No smiles or friendliness. read more

A group of us stayed in a few rooms while we did a three day "inn to inn" hiking trip. This was our third stop on the hiking trip, and it was a quaint, charming, friendly little Inn located right in Sausalito. Matt working the front desk was so kind and accommodating, he gave us restaurant recommendations and helped us with our bags. Stayed for one night on a mom getaway to get some rest. 3 stars because maybe for some people this is their jam and staff was friendly. Pros and cons as follows: Pros: 1. Staff is nice. 2. Quaint old place with surface-level charm 3. Location was easy for walking and accessing shops and restaurants Cons: 1. Bed could use an upgrade. Mine sank in the middle and was creaky every time I tried to get comfortable. 2. No central air. So if it's over 70 outside, expect your room to be hot. Had to keep the window and door open until ready for bed but wasn't enough to cool it down so it stayed at 77 all night. 3. If you're under another room, you will hear every movement above. Like every movement. 4. Windows don't lock and screens are not really a thing. Seems like a big safety/security issue. Mine also just looked out to the back of someone else's home and other rooms so not much of a view or privacy. 5. Room itself could use some upgrades. Things look like they are falling apart. 6. You have to pay for on-site, self-parking $20, which is very limited. 7. For $320 a night I am not okay with the cons above, especially since I didn't get much sleep per the cons above, which was sort of the point of my mom getaway. read more

The heat in our room did not work. We were told to use the LITTLE ceramic heater on the floor. The heater was not enough to keep the room above 55 deg. We froze all night. The response to our complaints were dismissed. We will never stay there again. read more

There were two aspects to our stay here: the room itself, and the service. The service was fantastic, very kind, and attentive! Wonderful desk staff. Unfortunately, the hotel space itself needs a little love. The room (ADA compliant Maple Room) was right off the lobby, near a pathway where folks walk by with roller suitcases or trash cans or something, and directly overlooking the parking area - so it's quite noisy. Additionally, the room was very warm when we arrived, and because there's no AC, you'll need to keep the windows open to help it cool down. Finally, there were definite signs of the historic age of the buildings, such as cracks in bathroom tiles/fixtures and blinds that couldn't be opened or adjusted. If we'd gotten a better deal, I wouldn't hold some of these issues against the hotel, but for the cost, I was disappointed with the state of the room. read more

Last year I stayed for three days and enjoyed myself. This year I received a charge on my credit card out of the blue from the hotel. I absolutely did not reserve a room in this hotel for dates in 2022. They say I reserved the dates a year ago likely while I was on site at the front desk, since they have no record of the method used to make the reservation and can't tell me for sure - never in my life have I reserved a hotel a year in advance. I extended my stay in 2021 one day while on site. Isn't it more likely the employee made a mistake with the dates and didn't erase it, than someone reserving the hotel a year in advance? The logic is borderline nonsensical, to tell me I reserved these dates most likely in person a year ago, since there's no record saying otherwise that must be the case. They say the mistake is my fault because I didn't answer my phone when they called, the day of the reservation. I was camping. They did not email me a reminder/confirmation for the 2022 reservation in advance, as they did last year. Or I would have called and inquired and cancelled as soon as possible. This is not honest, or fair. Either they made a mistake with my reservation last year and double booked me for 2022 - they say impossible because the dates were slightly different but clicking on a reservation calendar is by day of the week generally, not dates - or even worse they manually entered my credit card without a real reservation in place. I was told in 15 years they've never made a mistake. Sorry to break it to them, but they did make an honest mistake at best, that they won't take responsibility for, or at worst are thieves. Do you want to stay at a hotel that will keep your credit card on file after you stay, and charge you for a reservation they made for you without your request or permission? If so, I recommend Gables In. If not, definitely steer clear. read more

My husband and I had a wonderful, memorable stay at the Gables Inn. We were there for the first night of our honeymoon in November and the staff went the extra mile to make our stay special. We arrived in San Francisco in the morning and they were able to check us in early, which was greatly appreciated. They made us feel so welcomed and safe and offered a lot of recommendations when we asked. The room we stayed in was very clean which is also important to note. They were very accommodating and held our bags when we checked out. Because of this, we were able to stick around the neighborhood for longer and have a delicious lunch and cocktails before our next flight. You truly can't beat the location at the Gables Inn. Everything is so walkable and it's the perfect place for a weekend getaway. read more

The hotel is in a good location for walking around town. There is construction out front and no parking. We were given a pass for the public lot a couple blocks away. There is no one onsite to help resolve issues. You coordinate check-in and then haul your luggage up the stairs. No elevator. We were in room 304. We had trouble getting back into our building after dinner. Neither key card worked. No one answered the phone. We finally got in and the issue was the doorframe was cracked and stuck. There was no breakfast or services, likely Covid. The room was in the top 3 of the worst places I've stayed. It's literally falling apart. Everything seemed dirty. See captions on photos. I can't believe this was $333 per night. There was another room on the 3rd floor that we were told was as bad as ours. I can't see how anyone could give more than a star. Basically we paid more to get a second bed which wasn't usable. Questionable wiring with the lighting coming on and off randomly, the fridge cabinet was so hot I was worried about an electrical fire, the window latches were broken and wouldn't latch (hello bugs), no AC, no screens, the curtains/blinds were stained and torn, the tv did not work, the couch smelled, it's almost comical. The Gables Inn was amazing! We came in without a reservation on the last leg of our n cali road trip. We were extremely pleased that they could accommodate us after going to another prestigious hotel in the area where they were not very nice. We are traveling with our two teenage daughters so we needed a nice, roomy space. We stayed in room 206 and the view from the suite was killer! Just breathtaking! The place was well appointed! The man who helped us check in was super helpful and even left a nice surprise at our door that we found a few hours after checking in. His restaurant recommendations were great also! If we find ourselves back in this area, we will most definitely stay here. It was such a cute and quaint place! read more

Found this place on Yelp and decided to splurge. Well, for Sausalito it's not exactly splurging as everything is expensive here. Wanted a view, tub, and fireplace - and this room delivered in spades. Beautiful view of the bay, Alcatraz, and the SF skyline. Sunrise over the bay, lights at night, etc. Awesome! Tub was spacious with working jets, woo hoo!! Bathroom was large - easy for two to get ready in. Good supply of towels, courtesy soaps, etc. And I loved the "rain" mode on the showerhead. Living area is spacious with a large TV, fireplace, and tea nook (270° windows with table and chairs). Equipped with Kuerig coffee maker, snacks and wine for purchase. Fireplace comes with easy-lighting presto logs, and oak logs available upon request. Includes continental breakfast (not hot, unless you count toast) that offers a pretty good selection of fruit, cereal, yogurt, breads, and juices. Afternoon wine and cheese was included. Good selection of cheeses and crackers - wine was disappointing. Partook our first night- skipped it the second. Walking distance to nice shops and restaurants, ferry, bars, etc. Great location! Desk delivered champaign since it was our anniversary. Gift basket/flowers is available for purchase if you order ahead of time. To make this better: - owner could purchase a shield for the security light behind the building on the waterfront so it doesn't shine in the window all night. - a few windows - notably the bathroom - don't latch or have working openers. A couple hours of work for a repair guy. - bath salts or soap would be nice. Body soap bubbles too much with jets on - parking $20/day? What other option is there? read more

Downside of my recent stay A construction crew working on the hotel starting at 9:15PM, chop saws, construction crew F bombing each other, impact wrenches screwing siding to the wall outside my window on scaffolding outside my window on the third floor No cell phone reception close to or inside buildings And the hotel land line not working I walked down to the front desk but the poor young gentleman working was not prepared for my complaint of a construction crew working on the hotel at night. He was speechless. Upside: The hotel did not charge me for the nights stay with the construction fiasco. The commute on the ferry to and from the ferry is super relaxing. There are some quaint restaurants in the town. There are some interesting art and small business owned stores in the town. Needless to say, I will be back at the hotel. read more

The hotel is looking a bit rougher around the edges! The towels were stained. Cracks were not caulked and dirt in the corners! The front desk lady just gave out keys I had to ask what room and where! Literally the perfect place to stay. The town is so cute. Shops and cafes are within walking distance. Since we weren't asked how our stay was upon checking out, I decided I'd Yelp! our experience. The place is nice, cozy, perfect location in the heart of all the shops, restaurants, waterfront, etc. There is also parking on site available ($20 for overnight parking). We checked in shortly after 3pm on Sunday night of Presidents Day weekend, and stayed in one of the Laurel Rooms (ours was room 103). Super comfy bed, toilet and shower/bathtub separate from sink, and the bathtub had spa jets. Aveda products were supplied, which is always a plus. LCD TV with DirecTV. Snacks, wine, etc were available for in room purchase ($4 for a pack of gum, good thing we brought our own). Complimentary wine and cheese hour and continental breakfast is also offered. Everything seemed like we were in for a nice, quiet, mini staycation. We went to lunch, came back to the room, napped, woke up, and watched some TV until it was dinner time. We went to dinner at Barrel House (pretty much across the street) and came back to the room around 10pm, got ready for bed and were in bed by midnight. Our slumbers were disrupted throughout the night multiple times by multiple things. Our neighbors upstairs were apparently racehorses in training and galloping back and forth every few hours. The entrance to the hallway where our room was needs new doors that aren't so heavy/old and don't need to be shut with force, which shook our room every time they were closed. The walls are also very thin so you can hear people in the hallway even when they're speaking softly. It was the worst B&B experience we've ever had. Also, avoid parking in the spot farthest to the right in the main lot. If a person parks in the handicap spot in front of the fence, you're pretty much blocked in. It's very tight trying to get out of and requires a lot of patience, on top of that, they actually charge you to park there. We live in Oakland and usually do our staycations in Santa Cruz, Capitola, Carmel, Monterey, etc, but because of this rain, we thought it'd be better to stay closer and give Sausalito is a beautiful place and a lot closer, we regret giving it a shot because of this experience. First time I've regretted spending $300 on a B&B, and even though it was storming, we had a great time, aside from our lodging accommodations. read more

Stayed at this Inn for a wedding we were attending. The website is very well put together but a little misleading. This Inn is very cute and quaint but extremely outdated. The room we had was 201 and right next to the reception desk. The room was smaller than the bathroom but that didn't bother us much. This inn has No AC and no ceiling fans. Your best option for a breeze is some windows that don't stay open unless you have an object to prop them open. The windows also have no screens so bugs do get in. We had a very hard time sleeping because of how hot it was. The biggest issues we had was the room keys. You need the keys to access the inn as well as your room. We had issues throughout the whole stay with this. We had to request new keys 2x a day. We were stuck outside multiple times and had to crawl through our window twice through out our stay. We luckily left the window unlocked that we had opened to get air in the middle of the night. We were also assured there would be a floor fan in the armoire in the room and there was not. When I went to the front desk to talk about the issues we were having we were greeted by Dimitri. Dimitri was extremely rude and dismissive. He said the keys weren't working because we had them too close to our phones and credit cards. I told him we purposefully kept the keys separate from our wallets and phones and his response was "obviously not". He didn't once acknowledge how inconvenient me Climbing through a window 9 months pregnant was or apologize for any of the mishaps. His response to us being locked outside at 10 at night was we should have called the after hours line posted on the door for help and we wouldn't have had to wait more than 15 minutes for someone to come open the door. I explained to him that waiting 15 min at 10pm at night was very unreasonable and we had just had the keys replaced hours prior. I have never once posted a negative review for any business. The way he handles the situation was so rude and disrespectful I felt like I had no choice. I would have loved to resolve it just him and I but he would not acknowledge any of my concerns. They charge you $20 a night for parking which doesn't seem high for this area. The bed was comfortable and the water pressure in the shower was good. The location is close to everything and all of the restaurants and the water are within walking distance. There was a women on the first day and a gentleman on the first night that we had very pleasant interactions with. I wish they would have been working when we came to the reception desk with our concerns. read more

I am so disappointed in the way Gables Inn handle an unfortunate situation. My close friends booked a room for their honeymoon. On the happiest day of their life they had to deal with unprofessional Inn keepers. -They actually GAVE their room away filled with decorations and gifts -Blamed the Bride and Groom -Refused to let them retrieve gifts that belonged to them. -Gables wouldn't apologize -Resisted a refund or discount After a long discussion Gables Inn did return the gifts the Bride and Groom. They also finally gave them the refund they deserved. There is nothing like having such a beautiful day ruined. What ever happened to customer comes first or treating a Bride and Groom with special love on the happiest day of their lives. The Honeymooners are the sweetest people you will ever meet. They did not deserve this at all. I wish them the best on the remainder of their honeymoon. read more

I had a not-so-good experience. Yes, it was a lovely place, tucked away with individual patios and charm galore. Staff very courteous. But. Once I put my stuff down and started getting ready for a date, my Gables experience started to deteriorate. After showering the bottom of my feet had fine, dark, pet hair stuck to them (ew). I looked closer to the floor and yes, there it was. Went to wash my hands, the faucet sprayed the front of my cocktail dress :( I had little dried water marks all down the front. Returning with my date for the romantic evening I planned for him... the fireplace didn't work. If I wanted to stay in a lovely place with a non-working fireplace, tricky plumbing and slightly dirty carpet etc. I would have stayed home. read more

Worst establishment ever!!! A couple of dear friends booked a room for their honeymoon; when they got there, The Gables Inn had given the room away to somebody else! Worse than that, the room had decorations and gifts in it for their wedding. They had to argue and argue with the staff, to finally get a full refund, the staff says that they should be able to retrieve those gifts and decorations. But still, this left them without a room on their honeymoon! Don't go to this horribly run establishment. read more

My fiancée and I spent a night here for our 2 year anniversary, and it was like a dream. We stayed in the "Lilac room" (the walls are NOT painted lilac, in case you were wondering -- although we DID stay in an all purple room last summer in Italy, which was just kind of funny) and it was perfect. Let me tell you why, in a little list. -Um, jacuzzi tub? Yes. With the most amazing jets that turn their complimentary Aveda bath products into the thickest richest bubbles. YES. I love hot tubs. I love baths. I took three while we were here. -Gas fireplace. Yay! -Our own private balcony - hurrah! It was huge and had TWO big sets of partially glass french doors that opened up to it from our room. TWO! -We stayed here on a Wednesday night and got a 10% AAA discount. Another yay! -View of SF and the bay bridge/the bay. Nice way to go to sleep and wake up. -King bed with decent sheets. -Sexy contemporary furniture. -Attention to detail. In the whole place. So so cute from the moment you walk in the front door of the lobby. -Sexy mirror in our room. -Great selection of food at the complimentary 5:30pm wine/cheese hour and the 8-10am breakfast. Fresh pineapple and seasonal fruits, nice morning buns, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, and plenty of other filling and fresh goodies. I AM SO HAPPY WE FOUND THIS PLACE! Of course, it is out of my normal price range, but I think we got a mid-week special or something. Plus the AAA discount made it cheaper than they list online. When I am a rich and famous opera diva I am coming back here and staying for a WEEK. This is absolutely the place to come for a romantic and relaxing night with just yourself or with someone special, (if you can afford it). read more

This is a lovely traditional style Inn. The rooms are large and nicely decorated, and the view from the room (at least my room), is really nice, overlooking the ocean. This places loses stars because the air conditioning system in my room was broken so there was no air flow. I wasn't told about it either, instead they had a big noisy fan blowing air in the room. Secondly if you like a dark room, this is not the room for you. There are 2 windows where only a thin cloth covers the windows, so in the morning even with the curtains drawn the room is still light. Thirdly I went to open a bath towel and it had a huge hole in it. It's not a massive deal, but I wonder how it wasn't picked up. Overall I would stay here again, but I'll probably see what else is out there first. read more

I absolutely LOVED this B&B! Sausalito is a town that shuts down at night, so it's really important to find a great place to stay - and Gables Inn is exactly that. I loved our room. We had a fireplace in the room, which we used regularly since we came in the middle of Winter. It was great to curl up in front of the fire with a glass of wine. As for the facilities, the place was clean, homey and perfect for a relaxing vacation. The hostess, Mary, was great - very knowledgeable and honest. She was a blast to hang out with during the wine & cheese evenings and gave us great recommendations for good restaurants around town. I would definitely want to stay here again the next time in Sausalito! read more

Our children's shoe company was having a shoot is Sausalito and we needed a central meeting location for our model to change. Not only was Gables Inn located in the middle of the best photography spots, they even had great photography spots right in their hotel! Everything from our personal patio to the shared outdoor patio was picturesque. The entire staff was incredibly accommodating and friendly. Amazing breakfast spread in the morning and you can't go wrong with complementary wine and cheese after a hard day's work. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay! Ahh, how could I forget to write a review! We stayed at the Lilac room, and prior to check-in I decided to play a scavenger hunt game with my then boyfriend (now a hubby!) We spent an amazing couple of nights at the Gables Inn just this past weekend. The room was gorgeous and really cozy, and we had a nice view of some quaint little shops. The bed was incredibly comfortable--we couldn't find it in ourselves to get out of bed to get breakfast the first morning--it was too lovely sleeping in! There was a great fireplace that kept us warm, and we quite enjoyed the wine and cheese hour every evening! Everyone working at the Inn was super friendly and helpful whenever we had any questions. This place is a gem! We stayed in Room 104, and loved the layout, the fireplace, the clawfoot bathtub, (yes I took a bubble bath) the bath towels are huge, the bedding is very nice, the pillows could use a bit of an upgrade, but I'm not going to take away a star for that, I got a great nights sleep! The toiletries are Aveda, my favorite! My husband and I enjoyed the wine and cheese hour and if we didn't have reservations for dinner, we would have made a meal out of it! Chatting with other guests and Michael the host, who gives very generous pours of some VERY quality wine, was extremely fun and interesting. The smattering of charcuterie was outstanding. I'm not talking simple cheddar, Swiss, or peanuts, the food was obviously purchased in an upscale market. The crackers were special, the cheeses were amazing, the fruits, nuts, and pate--all wonderful. The breakfast the next morning was so much more than "continental". FRESH FRUIT was amazing, perfectly ripe and probably organic: pineapple, melon, papaya, (yes, that's right--papaya) bananas, grapes, oranges and strawberries. Croissants, bagels, English muffins, cream cheese, hard boiled eggs, cereal, yogurt, and a protein bar if you were on the run down to see the boats in the yacht harbor (which we were!). The teas and coffees were also top notch. The morning host, Michael, was equally as interesting and fun as the evening host, whose name is also Michael! There is one little thing I want to mention about Room 104, but I can't really fault the Gables for this, but there is some remodeling being done right outside the window on the side street below the bay window. Didn't bother me much, but it would have been a lot nicer if when I pulled open the shades, they weren't there, but they were, so we made the best of it. Like I said, not the hotels fault, and we got the room at a $50 discount so that was nice. WE WILL BE BACK! read more

The Gables Inn is fantastic. I was in Sausalito for work last week and I found the Inn on hotels.com. I got a pretty good rate since it's the "off season". Reasons The Gables Inn deserves five stars: *complimentary wine and cheese happy hour/reception in the front room/lobby. This was a fabulous bonus! * Plush, over-sized towels * Large, wall-mounted HD television * Comfortable bed and pillows * Updated, modern decor - furniture from Restoration Hardware * Wide variety of breakfast items - fruit, danishes, croissants, bagels, cereal, hard-boiled eggs, toast, yogurt, orange juice, milk, etc. * Free parking * Employees and Innkeepers are friendly, kind, accommodating, and provide excellent service * Right in downtown Sausalito in walking distance to many shops and restaurants * Beautiful views of the bay * Clean and fresh When I checked in, the person at the front desk said that I had been upgraded to a larger room at no charge, and a day or two later he offered to upgrade me again! I'm back in Sausalito for work this week and unfortunately The Gables Inn was all booked. I'm stuck at another hotel down the street (Casa Madrona), which is bordering horrible compared to The Gables Inn. If you're ever in Sausalito, do yourself a favor and stay here.
