I did not have a good experience working with Dr. Charlotte Kastl. Other people in her same office…read morewere pleasant and helpful. Dr. Kastl was uninformed in her own field, didn't communicate with people in her own office, and was dismissive and unprofessional. If you have chronic illness(es), you tend to be on the lookout for medications that are effective as well as symptoms and diagnoses from others with similar ailments. When I asked Dr. Kastl about a medication that others found helpful, she had "never heard of it" (end of conversation). When I had an appointment with another doctor in the office, Laura A Cinski (who was wonderful), I described my symptoms and asked if it could be a type of migraine I'd read about. She said that sounded exactly right and we talked about treatment. When my next appointment was back with Dr. Kastle, I told her about that type of migraine, she had "never heard of it" (end of conversation). When I had an appointment with the nurse practitioner in the office, Leandra S Armstead (who was also wonderful), she modified my prescription for one medication to take regularly as a preventative (I also have a second medication that's taken at the onset of pain). Unfortunately, it didn't work well so I messaged the office about it and asked for a refill of the medication that I take at pain onset. For some reason, the prescription request did not make it to my pharmacy. It's happened on occasion - one time I know the pharmacy's system went down for an hour and that happened to coincide with when my prescriptions were sent. I followed up with Dr. Kastl when the pharmacy never got the refill authorization and she would not believe me. She accused me of abusing pain medication. I even gave her a screenshot of the last refill date and asked her to contact the pharmacy for verification. She refused to do anything and gave me a very holier-than-thou speech about her duty as a doctor. It was a really horrible experience. If you're someone who has chronic pain, it's just mind-boggling and disheartening when a doctor gaslights you, blames you, or shames you for needing help managing your pain. Unless you really like that %^$&, don't see Dr. Kastl. P.S. Any doctor who tells you not to do your own research probably has delusions of grandeur. In today's world where so much information is at our fingertips and we can reach out to people around the world who have the same health issues, it's ludicrous not to take advantage of that. Granted, you probably shouldn't do most of your health-based research at Betty's Holistic Health Emporium of Crystals and Essential Oils (my apologies to Betty if this is a real thing), but there are good resources out there and you deserve a doctor who says "Let's look into it," rather than rolling their eyes at you.

The front staff as well as the assistants/nurses are all so friendly, kind, and welcoming - I was also able to be squeezed in for an appointment, which really never happens with a specialist; the amount of compassion and empathy that this office has is amazing. If you're looking for a neurosurgeon, there is only one doctor you should be trying to get an appointment with, and that's Dr. Nayak. Though I was recommended a different surgeon, Dr. Murry, I went with Kader to get the surgery done before the 2016 year was out. I paid for that mistake. Kader made no major slipups, but in doing the C5-C6 fusion he ended up tightening the spaces around the foramina, the places where the nerves traveling to the arms and back exit the spine - even though I had told Kader that I was an active amateur musician, and that playing was a big part of my life. Within two weeks after the surgery I started noticing symptoms down my arms and into my hands that were not there before the surgery. Except for brief periods, they did not go away, and slowly grew worse and worse. Kader refused to see any problem and only told me to take more drugs - even a year and a half after the surgery. Finally, my pain doctor recommended Dr, Ellegala of Sonospine. Three months ago he opened up the spaces that Kader closed, and my hands already feel stronger and more dexterous than they have in years. Ellagala's surgery technique isn't covered by insurance, and I had to pay $30K, but he fixed Kader's bungle, so it was worth it. But I'd rather not have had to pay it in the first place. When you pick a surgeon, you want someone who is committed to doing the best he or she can for you. Abraham Kader is not that surgeon, so he is not the surgeon you want. Go with Murry if you can.
