Hands down the worst eating establishment I've ever been to. Best part were the chips that came before the meal. At least they didn't make me feel sick. A friend of mine and I should've known the food was going to be awful just judging by the decor of the place. Dark, trying to appear like a festive patio with banners advertising cheap beer. Maybe I should've had a beer or two just to distract me from how bad the food was. The dishes we ordered were different, yet looked exactly the same and had the same consistencies and colors. Margarita wasn't bad for $5 and the queso was decent. This is why I'm giving this place 2 stars, we waited what seemed like forever to get our food, nobody was up front so I could ask, when we got our food they were both completely different things. First off, this is NOT "authentic" Mexican food. It's barely authentic food... This is easily the worst "food" I have ever voluntarily, or involuntarily, consumed. Save your digestive system the trouble and scrape some gum off the underside of a bench in Riverside Park. My friend and I got the "bean burrito" with a "quesadilla" meal. As the dish was brought to the table, our hearts sank. The plates seemed to be covered in some sort of pale brown mixture of cheese (?) and "tortilla". We ordered two sides of guacamole, hoping that we could add some green to the dish. The guac was clearly squeezed from a bag, and was $3.50 a side (the waitress did not tell us this beforehand...) Needless to say, the guac failed to spice up the dull puree mush sitting in front of us. We were able to force about 30% of the meal down, and had to leave due to stomach ache. On the ride home, we decided to make a yelp account so that we could rate this dump accordingly, and if 0 stars was possible, you had better believe that this place would be getting a big fat goose-egg. My husband and I were in Portland over the Memorial weekend holiday and this was the first place we tried. It was sort of a fluke that we were over in Westbrook but since we couldn't check into our hotel until later, we were driving around a bit aimlessly trying to find some lunch. I am a big fan of Mexican food (regardless of whether or not it is labeled authentic) and when we stopped at a little park in Westbrook I brought out my Yelp app and found two choices; Fajita Grill or The French Press. Despite being lured by the idea of fresh homemade donuts, we found ourselves drawn to Fajita Grill since they claimed to have Dos Equis on tap. Despite many places advertising Dos Equis, few places actually have it on tap and Fajita Grill did not disappoint with the Dos Equis Amber in a large frosted mug with a generous slice of lime. That alone would have made this place a three-star place but the food was phenomenal. It was great, hearty, stick to your ribs Mexican food. The complimentary chips and salsa were great. The chips were hot and I think freshly made. The salsa was of a perfect consistency...lots of juice with pureed tomatoes and lots of onion, garlic and cilantro. This set the meal off very well. We ordered some queso dip that while nice and simple in terms of flavor was much more runny than I would normally expect. It was the one somewhat low point in the meal as it tasted like it might have been watered down. I had a lunch special with a stuffed poblano pepper, taco, beans and guacamole salad. The pepper was stuffed with cheese and had plenty of cheese on the top but was also topped with a delicious green salsa. The taco was good, the meat somewhat underwhelming in terms of spice but I often think that with Mexican meat at places like this. The guacamole salad was guacamole set on top of iceberg lettuce which was exactly what I expected. The guacamole was decent and a great accompaniment to both the taco and the poblano pepper. My husband had a tostaguac which was delicious and a burrito as part of a combination. The burrito had a slightly spicy red sauce on top although there was not enough of it. The beans that came with both of our dishes were very good...subtle flavor and nicely pureed with a few chunks of pinto beans. I have been complaining about how many people complain about there not being good Mexican in NYC when they clearly haven't been beyond their little neighborhood in Manhattan. It was great to find this "salt of the earth" Mexican in a little town in Maine. It wasn't spectacular, blow your mind, Mexican haute cuisine but it was great, particularly with a large mug of Dos Equis. read more

Fajita Grill has been enormously successful since it opened. It's staight-forward, no BS, quality food with lightning fast, friendly service and a fun energetic atmosphere. The salsa is great, as are the tortillas and chips. There are tons of weekly specials, of which Tuesday's 30-cent wings and $1 drafts is by far the most popular. The staff consists entirely of mostly Mexicans and Guatemalans who are incredibly friendly and quality servers, even when they're at their busiest. This place is probably at this point 99% repeat customers who know the staff well. read more

This weekend, my husband and I went to Fajita Grill on Friday night. We had just received our drinks and ordered our dinners when we got called to a medical emergency. The staff at Fajita Grill did everything they could to get us on our way as quickly as possible . . . we didn't even pay the check. The next day, we went back for lunch and to settle our bill from the prior evening. The same staff was there and immediately asked if everyone was okay and never even mentioned the bill. Also while we were there for lunch, the people from another table left and had forgotten something on the table. The server grabbed the item and ran after them to return the item to them instead of simply stashing it behind the bar in the lost & found. While we enjoyed the food and service before, we will be going to Fajita Grill more often because we know the staff genuinely care and go the extra mile for their customers. read more

Although the service was acceptable the food is NOT okay. Last night (7/19/2013) ordered shredded beef enchilada and tamale combo. The shredded beef was rotten with a very foul taste similar to the smell of walking by a dumpster of bad meat. Never got past the first bite which wound up getting spit out. Notified the staff but they defended the meat as being good. I shutter to think of anyone eating there and getting ill, which didn't seem to concern the staff. This is the best Mexican (Tex-Mex) restaurant that I have found in the Portland area! If you are familiar with what Mexican restaurants are in the Southeast then you'll love this place. The owner used to have a restaurant in Georgia so the menu is pretty much exactly like a Mexican restaurant down there would be. I think the pricing is very fair for the area, especially if you use the daily specials ($5 combos on Sundays!). I've been going about once a week and will probably continue to do so. What a disappointing experience. Service was friendly enough, but not at all attentive. The food was not great. Mole sauce wasn't too bad, but the chicken it covered, was dry as a bone. My youngest son had nachos with cheese only, and it litterally looked like someone had thrown several slices of american cheese on some chips and put it through the salamander. My older son had the California burrito. It was FULL of rice, but had very little steak in it. My husband had carnitas which was dry. My strawberry margarita was ok (a bit sweet) but my husband's house lime margarita was horrible. The atmosphere was dank and depressing. Fajita Grill is an amazing Mexican restaurant right in downtown Westbrook. I would consider it a dive but the food is fantastic. Their combo meals are both cheap and filling. The service is fast. You always get a basket (or more) of free chips and salsa. First time I ate there,it was good. Being raised on Mexican food, it was great to find a place that serves good Mexican food other than my home. But the last time I was there,I was disappointed in the food, I asked the waiter why I was being served the "Gringo" food. He was shocked that I even said that. I explained to him in Spanish that I know what Mexican food should look and taste like. He said they have made some cutbacks.
