Closing in on Tonopah driving up the hill we get into town. Usually I stop at the far north end of town at the station that gas the Burger King inside. But this time I decided to stop in the middle of town at this Giggle Springs. I think I've stopped at another station with the same name on Bishop CA. This place seemed to have the cheapest gas in town and a good sized connivence store to get more road food. There wasn't a line for gas, so I pull in and pick a pump. The rest of the crew heads inside to the restrooms and junk food. The pump takes my credit card fine and I set the pump to pumping. This Suburban suck a ton of gas for the distance. But we're carrying 5 people and a ton of gear, so per person I guess it's worth it. I go in and use the restroom, decently clean, get a couple of cans of coke and now I get to have someone else do the driving! Reno, actually Carson City here we come!

I'm sure the owners of this fine establishment know where everything is, and it would take more than a couple wonderful hours for me to figure this place out. Luckily for Gayle and me, the Nevada-centric books were up front. She found one that had a good description of the "nearby" Hot Creek Ranch, where her extended family still has ownership. I enjoyed and purchased an older Nevada tour book, with great maps and descriptions. And it really didn't matter that many of these places were no more. Unfortunately, our time was limited and I don't think we even scratched the surface of this place. But we'll be back to peel this onion back a little more.

Ever since Love's Travel Stop opened in Tonopah, it's officially become our go-to midpoint stop. It's clean, convenient, and exactly what you hope for when you're breaking up a long drive. We happened to stop in during a busy Friday night rush, and despite the crowd, Cody (who's currently in training) handled things really well. He stayed pleasant, composed, and professional the entire time--which isn't always easy, especially as a new hire in a high-traffic setting. Kudos to Cody for keeping it together under pressure--that kind of attitude definitely doesn't go unnoticed.

Being frequently out of Diesel and having issues with the payment system on your pumps and also not putting out squeegees and windshield cleaning fluid really doesn't help matters either. I can't really say much positive about this place. The general vibe they're conveying is, "We know you don't have a lot of choices out here in the hinterlands so we're not going to put any effort into our offering". The last urinal going out of commission is just the cherry on top of this crappy business

We were on vacation and making our way from one huge metropolis (Kingston) to another (Belmont)…read more After filling our trailer with much needed water at the rest area in Carvers, we stumbled on this town called Hadley, which is obviously a 'company town' attached at the hip to the Round Mountain gold mine. We were in need of ice and (ahem) beer, so we pulled off the road and headed into town. We found the General Store almost by accident because it doesn't look like your average Safeway or Raley's with huge windows across the front. No, this is a STORE which barely had windows next to the front door! Maybe it's because they didn't want to waste valuable wall space where shelving could be placed instead of pesky windows. Now the amazing part. They've got just about anything you could want in a 'supermarket' in this store. The aisles are a bit narrow, but that's so they can put MORE of them IN there! Lots and lots of stuff. Just the spot for RV'ers to restock anything they're likely to need. Ice, beer, even top shelf liquor. The wine selection is somewhat lacking, but I think most miners don't give a HOOT about wine. Lots of different brands of beer though (because that's what I think miners DO care about). And the kicker? The prices are not bad at all. You'd expect to pay a lot more when out in the middle of gosh-darned nowhere (like you do in, oh, say Austin), but not HERE. I'm thinking maybe the mine subsidizes this in some way, because this is really NOWHERE. Beautiful scenery all around, and that's why we travel out like this, but it has to cost a fortune to truck all this stuff in. The town has a gas station and the usual bars too, but this store has to be what sustains the lives of all these people. And we RV'ers who also need the services. Also, be sure to pick up a copy of the "Valley View" newsletter. It's a bi-weekly newsletter that will give you an idea of what life is like in a town like Hadley. Interesting reading.
