But what makes this park special is an area called Riley's Place. Riley's is a playground that is made with dark stained wooden towers, ramps, and equipment. After parking along the street, there is a ramp into the area which is surrounded by a short wooden barrier. Most of the park is elevated with a mulch base underneath and in the open areas. There are more towers than I could count, swings, climbing areas, and an assortment of objects made from wood (cars, turtle, musical instruments). The park seemed to be in good shape though I think the drainage of the open areas could have been a bit better. The parking is very limited to street parking (and not on both sides of the road), so hosting an event here would be difficult. Great camping spot! We rented Osprey cabin by the lake. It was about $50 a night. There's a fire…read morepit, plug in heater, AC, outlets, a full sized bed frame, twin bunk frames, and a little nook up a ladder over the door. No mattresses, so bring something. This cabin has a water spigot right outside, and is a 4 minute walk from a building with bathrooms (stalls with doors) & showers. There's a porch with a chair and porch swing. The sun rises right behind the swing over the lake. The campground gets very crowded, but this bundle of 4 cabins feel secluded enough. We had plenty of privacy from neighboring cabins and other campers. You have to reserve 2 nights online for cabins. This cabin was showing a single night of availability. We had to call to reserve but it was worth it. They'll let you book just one night like that if you're within 2 weeks of the date you want. Oh and this weekend in October they have a big Halloween thing so lots of people decorated their spaces and there was trick r treating.

I've been to botanical gardens in other cities where the community and local officials don't dedicate resources to it. I'm not sure of the entire breakdown here for funding but I do know they'll obtain a round of funding, build out, and repeat. In the future, this botanical garden will rival some of the best in the country. I don't even think 25% of this place has been developed yet. On the last visit, it was for the holiday light decorations. We got super lucky, arrived, and within 20 minutes it started snowing. It made the experience so worth it. Out of other holiday happenings around town, (Light up downtown, the mega caverns, etc etc), I much preferred this even over all the others. The light decoration isn't the largest but I still think it's worth it. Kids will love it and as long as you're not a grumpy gus(No offense Gus) of a human being, you should have a good time. The gardens part through the spring and summer is also fun but limited. Again, it's going to take time as the years go by but the botanical gardens definitely adds something to the city of Louisville.

It was nice to have AC in August heat though! We didn't put our air mattress on the bed platform because ours is a queen, not a full. It was also nice to have our air mattress closer to the AC unit! Picnic table outside, works great for our family. We were basically in the cabin to sleep. Bring bikes, kayaks, air mattress, coolers, bedding..... Shower houses and restrooms are decent but can be a walk from your cabin, depending on where you're located. This cabin is the "Persimmon" cabin. We like seclusion, so it worked perfectly for us!

My parents are staying at the camp ground. It's very nice and clean. We went and spent the…read moreafternoon hiking with them at Rose Island. It was really neat! It's a very steep walk down and then back up. My dad and I both have bum knees and the walk down was hard on our knees. It says in several places that trail 3 is longer but not as hard, so we decided to take trail 3 back. I don't know who decided to play a mean trick on people and say trail 3 is easier to take but man they have a sick sense of humor! The mail trail is about a mile down a wide paved road. You could easily drive down it. Trail 3 is a windy, steep up and down, rocky, rooty, dirt trail that is also very narrow. It is not in any way shape or Form easier than the main trail. Oh and did I mention it is about a mile and a half or more? So it's harder and longer than the main trail . See the pictures. We did see more cool stuff on trail 3 than the main trail though. Rose Island itself was really cool. It would have been an amazing place in its hay day!
