Only plus is that this place is popular with the locals. That also is the biggest minus, as we arrived at 12:30 pm and did not receive our food for an hour. The service was not only slow, but unfriendly as well. While we were brought refills on drinks and the coleslaw that came with one of our sandwiches, they were thrown down without a word. The same was true for our food when it finally arrived with the check as well. There was also not a word of apology for the long wait. I should mention that we were among several tables that waited a lengthy amount of time for their orders. There is a sign by the cash register (only visible when leaving!) that says "we specialize in fresh food, not fast food, so please be patient." It's an admirable goal, but not if the expectation is that customers will be fine with waiting an hour for said fresh food. Our sandwiches were good, but that may be because we were ravenous when they finally showed up! My impression is that Family's Main St Restaurant is primarily a hangout for locals to catch up with one another while waiting for breakfast or lunch. While there's a place for restaurants like this, I do not recommend it to travelers who want to eat in a reasonable amount of time and go on their way. read more

Delicious local spot. Cash only. This place is great southern cooking, portion sizes are huge we usually eat twice on one meal. Chicken fried chicken is Devine, gravy is so good as well as the fried potato's. Wait can be a little longer in busy times (sometimes it's packed) but worth it in my opinion. I wanted to love this place. It was busy and I figured that meant good food and good service. I saw good service with the locals. But not with visitors like us. We were here 1 hr before we got our food. That is ridiculous. My family liked the omelets. My son liked the biscuits and gravy. But my and my daughters food was subpar. She messed up my order. I asked for well done American potatoes so they decided that meant to deep fry them. I said, I am so sorry not trying to be mean. But I am not paying for these or eating them. They were hard as a rock. She got offended got another plate and yelled across the table at me to give them back. I looked at her. Like ummm I am not handing them over 9 people. You can come over here and get them. She was so rude and I was so in shock I couldn't even say any more. That's how we do them well done!! I have never heard of such a thing. See photos. We found this place by accident on our way to Cincinnati from Louisville. The food was really good but the service was the very best. Obviously family owned and run. Country ham was a huge piece of ham. I would definitely go to this place again. David and I were traveling to the Ark Encounter and found this gem of a cafe/dinner. From the time we walked in the door we were made to feel like family. Our waitress was amazing. When I asked what is good for breakfast she suggested Goetta. What is Goetta I asked. She was shocked I had never heard of it. She said she loves it and it was a Family staple. David ordered the pancakes and eggs, which were both thick and fluffy. I had the ham and cheese omelet with biscuits. We ordered a side of Goetta and a bowl of gravy (for the biscuits). The bowl of gravy was a large cereal size bowl of gravy that could have covered a dozen biscuits with some to spare. The biscuits were to die for. They were some of the best I've ever had. David didn't care for the Goetta but I think it was good. Its a soft sausage with oats formed into a loaf, baked then fried. Everything is good when it's fried. lol We plan to return to the area again this summer and will definitely make this our first stop. read more

We don't go to Family's very often but when we do I'm always happy when we leave. Family's is cash only, small, and has a very country family meal feel. The walls are covered in a ton of pictures of drag racing cars, people riding horses, and people showing animals at the fair; it reminds me of home haha. Everyone knows everyone and the food is delicious. This morning I had two fried eggs over medium with home fries and bacon. The kids like cheese on scrambled eggs, which isn't on the menu but they made it anyway. The waitresses are all so sweet, Heidi was our waitress this morning and she did a great job. I really, really, REALLY wanted to like this place. We are sorely lacking in good home-cooking joints in the Florence/Burlington/Union area. Since I shop at Brooks Meats next door to Family's once a month for my meat marketing, I noticed the restaurant and told my husband that we were going to try this "little joint" when we were off for the holidays. We arrived the day before Christmas eve (so, Thursday) early lunch time. The place was hopping with locals. Just a few tables open, which to me, said, "good place to eat". We meandered to a table in the middle section, which was crowded. We had our 22 month old with us, and I noted that the whole restaurant was smoking. Normally, I wouldn't commit to this, but I thought, how long could we be here, really? Well, not only was this place a full smoking restaurant, I would wager that everyone smoked. And, all the people smoking (including the elderly lady on oxygen at the table to our left) smoked WHILE eating. Never a break in between bites. GROSS. We all reeked when we left... Our server was nice. We ordered breakfast, which they have all day, and that's great. Took a while to get to us. While waiting, my husband sipped on a soda. The gal who was bussing tables for everyone picked it up and returned it. I noted that my husband wasn't drinking after a time and he had a strange look on his face. When I asked, he said, "it's just disgusting, that's all." "What?" "This isn't my drink. The straw has been chewed on. It belongs to the man behind you. I've been watching him chew on his straw and I saw the gal pick his and mine up on her last trip by." Um, another GROSS. My husband is a server, and he was nice about it to our server. Thankfully, she was equally horrified--sadly, the man at the other table was drinking my husband's coke without even a second thought. Don't know HOW you handle that one...and she didn't. Didn't say a word. Our food arrived. It was decent home cooking. I was so hungry I didn't really care and dove in. Moved my hashbrowns around to find a nice dark hair swimming in the grease--well hidden under the pile of hashbrowns. At that point, I decided that it simply was not a place to come back to...or to complain, or to finish my meal. And, the completely full tables that initially said to me "good place"? After the work crowd cycled through, it left a bunch of tables with local yocals who, apparently, retired early, are on SSI or other. They just hung out, and hung out and when a few folks actually left a table for good, the remaining members just moved on over to another table to chat with the rest of the yocals. read more

We stopped in here late yesterday afternoon to see what the place was like. (I just moved here.) We were looking for a nice little place to have some dessert. The server did not even acknowledge us when we came in. Even though she was ringing up another lady, she could have let us know to have a seat anywhere. Note that there was only two tables of people eating, so it is not that she was busy. We stood until she was done ringing up the other gal, and then we asked if we were to sit anywhere and she said yes. After she brought us the menu, we were told that pies were the dessert choice, so that is what we would get. As we sat there and looked around, the place just didn't have that cozy country diner feel that you like to find in a small town restaurant. We decided to get a whole pie to go, but found out they had no whole pies. So, we got a piece of chocolate cream pie, coconut cream pie, and apple pie to go. The server was not a happy server, but did the job. When we got home and tasted the pies, they were delicious. We will definitely get a pie to go from there in the future, but it seriously doubt we will ever eat there. read more

They allow Smoking but We did not see anyone smoke till We was leaving. The Portions are big and the Price is Cheap. You will not be disappointed. read more

similar experience to Jonni. I took the family there as we really like Brook's meats. Meat quality at the restaurant was great, the pork sandwich was tender and a nice sandwich. The sides were pretty generic and seemed to be the "out of the can" taste. That said, for the price the meal was good - really due to the meat quality. The real issue was the smoking. Ventilation is poor and there is no escaping the smokers who were chewing with one hand and puffing with the other. I don't mind a bit of smoke, but this is a Little place and for a place that is "family" won't take my daughter back. Too bad as we were hoping for a place we could go get brunch and lunch that is locally owned. Won't go back, will just buy meat next door and cook at home instead of wasting the money. read more

This is Truly a Family owned country place. My parents go at least once a week. They are non smokers and hate places where you sit and a smoking section is next to the non smoking... but they have these little smoke things hanging on the wall and i have never left smelling like smoke. Yes it does have some retired people maybe playing cards...or just chatting over coffee. But the Food is Good country food. And the staff is very personable! They are Friendly, sweet and will try to do whatever they can for you. My parents are more of the morning Special Good amt of food for a low price. My dad also loves to go on salmon patties on Friday's. But basically if you want to support a Real Family owned place, give em a try. read more

If you are looking for a nice friendly "family style" local eatery with good food and reasonable prices, Family's Main Street Café Restaurant is the place to go in Walton. If you don't like (or can't afford) to pay cash, don't like an occasional smoker, slow service when they're busy, or the "colorful locals" who somehow always seem to be there, then don't go. My wife and I, and sometimes our adult children, go there about once a month. In the four years or so since we first tried it, we have never left without the satisfied feeling of just experiencing a good plentiful meal at a fair price. For the two of us, our bill rarely exceeds $20; including a 15% (or more) tip. Yes, as business and education professionals, we can certainly afford the more expensive and formal eateries found in the more affluent Northern Kentucky communities to the north of Walton.
