We came here to ask about buying foam to re-foam our sofa cushions. Tom was great and explained all our options and told us that they will do the labor for us to re-foam the cushions for the same cost as buying the foam alone. We went ahead and brought in our cushions and they were finished the same day. We are THRILLED, our sofa is better than when it was new. So, foam is kind of expensive. I just wanted to put that out there for those unfamiliar with the world of upholstery repair. However, Tom made our experience as painless as possible. We brought in some couch cushions which had piss-bombed by unhappy felines, and he helped replace that which needed replacing with minimum financial distress. He made precise measurements, helped us select the cheapest viable option, and then cut it to order while we waited. He also gave us some plastic sheeting, gratis, to wrap around the foam inside the cushion cover in order to protect it from any future incursions of urine. Nice! (Unfortunate Epilogue: Despite our best efforts, and through no fault of FFF, the couch only survived another 6 months. Damn cats.) read more

I had a really great experience with this store. I bought a small mattress some time ago, on which the label read that it was without fire retardants. I happened to stop by year or two later, and mentioned this to the person working there who turned out to be its owner. I was mentioning that I wanted to get a 2nd mattress for a friend. I was using mine as a bed for my baby, and my friend wanted the same. I talked about how we wanted it to be FR free. She said in fact those mattresses were NOT FR-free, and apologized. And offered to change out mine. So we discussed the options- FR foam doesn't come firm as the FR ones. So we got something a little thicker to jam into the existing cover. And we did the same for my friend's as well. Later she called and we had some back and forth on the phone to finalize the color, etc. Five days later I got a call. Had a very positive experience here with excellent customer service. I know some have complained of being ignored when other customers are there, but I can't speak to that. I brought in two couch cushions to get the foam replaced. I was shown a number of options and given lots of information about price, softness, quality, and environmental impact of the various choices. I ended up choosing the middle quality option, which was a bit more expensive than I hoped but still reasonable (a bit more than ordering online, but much faster and I wouldn't worry about incorrect sizing, etc). I picked up my refinished couch cushions the next day and they are feeling much better (a little off-gassing, but that's the challenge with any new foam unfortunately...and natural latex is much more expensive). I will definitely come back next time I need to replace cushions. read more

Service was great. Problem is the product. I bought a queen sized egg crate foam topper for my bed. With tax it was $197. Not cheap at all. I was told to give it time for my body to adjust. Well two months later I am removing it from my bed. Although I bought the "best quality" topper, it is still too soft and my back hurts every morning. My back is great when I sleep at hotels so it's not me. When rolling it up my hand went right through it and punctured a hole in it! These are not returnable so my $200 went down the drain. My advice, just buy a new bed. At least you can take it back if you wake up with aches and pains and it's not working for you. read more

They explained the different products, let me take them out to my car, and we're just overall really sweet! i visited famous foam factory on the recommendation of a friend. i needed to replace the foam cushion which is my berth on my boat, which i live on full time and sleep on most nights. the original foam was too firm for my girlfriend, felt like it was time to replace it. this place seems popular, and i doubt my negative review will effect the business, but i have to put this out there... after waiting quite a while for the woman who seems to be running the show there to get to me (a line of people waiting before and after me) i showed her my cushion and told her what i was looking to do (get softer, better foam) she brought out several examples of foam to choose from and i chose the softest one, which was super comfortable and plush - just what i wanted. she wrote me up, charged me, and i waited a few days for her to call me when it was cut to size and ready. all in all, despite her being generally frazzled and a little short with me, nothing really wrong up to this point. she was obviously busy. no problem. after fitting the foam into our custom made cover and getting the bed all set up, we were excited for a good nights sleep. except that didn't happen, because the foam was incredibly stiff and not giving or soft at all. tired for three nights and it's actually painful and i ended up on my couch. at this point i'm thinking there was some sort of miscommunication and she thought i wanted the denser foam, or there was a mistake somewhere between me choosing the foam and her cutting the piece for me. i figured she had cut the wrong foam, or somehow wrote down the wrong foam when i was testing the different slabs of foam in her shop that day. i figured best to go down there and see what happened and work it out. i brought my receipt, which states the density and type of foam she helped me select. i also brought the scrap cut-off for the new foam for comparison. basically, she stood there and told me that yes, this is the correct foam i ordered without looking at or feeling the sample i brought in and that it's just stiff and would soften up and break in after a while. the test piece of foam i tried out in the shop was like a dream, soft and giving, super plush. this piece she sold me is like plywood. instead of offering to fix it by replacing the foam with the correct density, or simply showing me how the piece i tested in the store is the same as the piece of scrap i brought in, she basically just shrugged, stared me down and said nothing. i asked if there was a way to break it in faster (if what she was saying was true) and she suggested i jump up and down on it for a while. seriously? then she suggested i buy a mattress topper from her, to make it softer. which wouldn't fit in our cover. but that shouldn't matter because there will be a sheet anyway. really? i just want what i ordered and paid $300 for to be right and not some lame excuses. she obviously made a mistake and cut the wrong foam, and instead of admitting it is passing this off as normal. read more

If possible, I would give Famous Foam Factory zero stars. I wanted a small day-bed with drawers on the bottom. I chose FFF because I wanted a natural wood frame and all of the IKEA ones are painted. I went in and the closest thing on the floor was much smaller than I wanted, about half as deep, so the drawers went all the way from front to back. Tom, the salesperson, neglected to explain to me that all the drawers were only as deep as the ones on this shallow floor model (more like a bench than a daybed). So I order mine (5' long by ~36" deep, the floor model), receive it, and the drawers only go halfway back. FFF advertise themselves as a 'custom store' so it seems fair to assume that the drawers could be made to the full depth of the bed. When I asked about this, I was told that only 15" deep rails are available. I can go to Home Depot right now and buy 24" deep rails. Furthermore, there are no panels on the sides of the daybed so it is obvious that the drawers aren't as long as the bed is deep. They saved a total of about $8 worth of knotted pine by not designing panels to cover up the fact that they can't be bothered, as a 'custom store,' to make complete drawers. Furthermore, the rails don't have a stopper to prevent the drawer from sliding all the way back to the wall, so the drawers slide underneath the bed, thus eliminating the convenience of having storage drawers under the bed. I've had beds with storage drawers for many, many years and these are by far the worst ones I've ever purchased. I called to voice my concerns and a woman picked up, I don't know her name. I began explaining my problems with their product and she was dismissive and wouldn't hear me out. Finally she said, "I have a customer waiting, I'll call you back." This was in the early afternoon. I did not receive a call back that day or the next morning. Fed up, I took one of the drawers with me back to FFF to explain the problem in person. I found Tom and explained to him my issues with the product; the workmanship is shoddy (the drawer does not roll smoothly, the thing looks terrible, to which Tom replied, "We're not a craftsman store") and the drawer is not the full depth of the day-bed (I planned to use the drawers for blankets, sheets, pillows, etc. to which Tom told me that those drawers "are for clothes," completely dismissing me). So I said I wanted to return the whole thing because I was severely unhappy with it. Tom told me I couldn't return it because it was "custom made." So any complaint I have about the craftsmanship or workmanship, I'm told this isn't a craftsman store - but if I try to return a product, it's "custom made"? They told me that if I wanted them to fix the drawers there would be additional charges. I just gave up because I don't ever want to deal with Tom or anyone at Famous Foam Factory ever again. Do yourself a favor and just go to IKEA. For about $180 you can get a daybed frame with deeper drawers that works just fine (my "custom" frame from FFF was $438 as in $289 for the daybed frame plus $149 for the too-short drawers that aren't craftsman, but are "custom-made" . . . somehow, so you can't return them, total this daybed set cost $774). Famous Foam Factory is an absolute rip-off. Their "custom-made" but not-craftsman work is poor and their prices are way too high. read more

Famous Foam Factory provided me with the absolute worst retail experience of my life. Since I am not all that young and have done quite a lot of shopping, that is saying something. It was also a very costly experience, since the nearly $2000 custom made foam mattress they built for me proved to be (1) not what I ordered and (2) unusable for me or my partner due to being painfully hard. We had spent a long time with the salesman picking out the foams for our custom mattress. He was distracted, left to see to other customers on more than one occasion. So, okay, he made a mistake and put the harder synthetic (duralay) latex in the core rather than the softer and natural talalay we ordered. Mistakes happen, but the bed was unusable for us. When I returned and told the salesman (Tom) about the problem, he told me that my partner and I obviously did not correctly remember my own order, because it was impossible that he had made a mistake. We obviously wanted the harder core. This was freaky because we had told him repeatedly that we wanted "the softest" that they offered. Tom grudgingly and defensively "offered" to take the incorrect portion of the foam back (while making a big deal about what a drag this was for them to store the foam -- hello, it's a foam store, full of stored foam!), give me a partial (unspecified amount) credit for a portion of the foam (because he rarely sold King and would have to cut it down to Queen, so that's all he would credit me for, at their wholesale), and sell me a replacement piece for a total cost of over $600. He would not tell me the store's cost for the replacement piece, so we could (for example) split the cost. Since I could buy replacement foam on eBay for less (same brand as I had actually ordered in the first place), I declined. I had to wait for the one day a week that you can talk to an owner. I should have saved my time. It took all day and multiple attempts to get through to the owner (Chris). She was out, she was with a customer, she was out to lunch, she was (over an hour later) eating lunch. The other owner was available, but he didn't want to handle it himself. Obviously my call was a low, low priority. When I finally talked to Chris, she was rude, insulting, and intractable. When I said the bed was unusable for me or my partner, she said I was just "looking for miracle cures" for my health problems. Excuse me? I don't have back pain except when I sleep on the hard bed they sold me, which left me in great pain every night I used it. The "miracle cure" was sleeping on an old mattress -- voila, pain gone. My partner has fibromyalgia, but we have had two foam mattresses in the past that worked extremely well for her -- we are not looking for miracles, just the soft mattress we ordered. Anyway, our "health problems" apparently meant to her that there was no reason to repair the mattress because nothing they had would satisfy us. She could apparently tell this without actually offering us anything at all. Chris also refused to discuss their cost for the replacement foam, so there was no way to know how much they were marking it up before marking down the value of the piece I was returning. I was to take it on faith that they were going above and beyond to offer me a great deal..um, yeah, but I don't think so. I went to the BBB, to see if Famous Foam would allow them to mediate. I offered to return the mattress for a refund or split their cost for the replacement foam, since we disagreed as to who was fault. Note that the vast majority of stores have a "comfort guarantee," even if you DO get what you ordered (which I decidedly did not). But Famous Foam wouldn't deal through the BBB either. In fact, their final reply was that they have a "No Refunds" policy. Apparently, that applies even if they do not make you the mattress you ordered! There are plenty of places that guarantee your comfort, and plenty more that will at least admit and correct their own errors. It was my great misfortune to shop at a store that neither admits error nor gives a flying hoot about customer satisfaction. I would advise anyone to avoid making the same mistake. read more

I actually joined Yelp just to review this buisness. Seriously WTF!!! I work customer service in Berkeley, so I know how tough it can be. I'm also from the East Coast, so I'm not thin skinned about people being rude. In my first neighborhood growing up someone saying," I'm gonna fucking strangle your dog," is said in place of," good morning." Yet this guy from the Famous Foam factor twice insinuated I was an idiot, in the first ten seconds of my conversation on the phone with him. Truly is guy is Rembrandt of condescension. It's like the comic store owner from the Simpsons got into the foam business. Really you have to call this guy and experience his rudeness first hand. I dare you, call him and ask a specific question about a foam product, and watch this schmuck tell you how he knows what you want, so much better than you do!! read more

Tom, the owner, would benefit from a customer service course. I came in for a pickup. There was only one other customer in the store. Tom never so much as glanced my way for a good fifteen minutes, while chatting up this customer about foam, dry cleaning, her new car, the insurance settlement related to it, his own desire to buy a Prius, etc, etc, etc, etc. The shop is filled with signs explaining things they will not do (including taking phone orders). In true form they "reluctantly" accept American Express. All in all Tom would be a great case study for the book "Customer Satisfaction is Worthless" (by Jeffery Gitomer). At the end I asked him if he'd read his own Yelp reviews. He had. I said I'd had a similar experience that day. He argued back why I was wrong, thus sealing this less than stellar review. read more

I came into this store because I knew exactly what I was going to purchase. As some other reviews say, the person works here will ignore you. He will ignore you if he's talking to a customer. He can't even say hi or anything. I said hello. He ignored me. I said "is there anyone who can help me." He finally uttered. "I'm with a customer right now." Okay, my question is why is it so hard for you to welcome a customer? Even if you are with a customer, how long does it take for you just to say "hi" back? How hard is it for you to just smile at someone who are about to drop some money for your business. If you just could smile and say "hi, I will be right with you." I could wait. But your attitude really, really, wow, really, pissed me off. So I left. I went to a different store on university and I'm so glad I did so. Remember, what you give is what you get. And with 3 star average, I don't think your store deserve "People like us on Yelp" sticker on the entrance door. Hope my 1 star review even lowers the average. Thanks for reading. I've read all the reviews. Now here's mine: in this world of on-line purchasing, instant gratification and big box shopping, FFF is an anachronism. Some days you may find that the person helping you is not in the best of moods or you may be in a hurry or the stars may be out of alignment...who knows? The point is, these guys know EVERYTHING about their little niche business. Example: I bought a 'vintage' couch with a beautiful wood frame and lovely textured fabric with not a mark on it. Problem was with the pillows--they were very squooshy. I took them to FFF and no sooner had I opened one of them up in the store, but one of the guys (I think it was Tom) told me in no uncertain terms to zip that puppy back up. Turns out the foam inside was literally almost soup and would have gotten everywhere. He gave me exact instructions on how to proceed: put the foam in plastic bags, wear a face mask, vacuum out the covers until there was no trace of the old foam, etc. Meanwhile, he took careful measurements, we chose a good firm density replacement, and when I brought my clean covers back a couple of weeks later, he used his fancy cushion stuffer thing and *voila*! Brand new couch cushions! And considering how long they should last, not a bad deal at all. If you think you'll get this anywhere else, by all means go there. I would have given 5 stars but when we picked up our newly foamed cushions we had to take the old stuff with us. They told us they could not recycle the old foam. Hello? I cannot commend their customer service enough! I bought a bed frame from them in 2014 and recently one of the lats split. I called up and the very kind woman offered to call the manufacturer, have them send a lat to their store and I could pick it up, all free of charge. She let me know when the order had been placed and when the lat arrived. When I got home, I realized that the manufacturer had mistakenly sent the wrong sized lat. I called back and a different person seemed to know who I was and offered to contact the manufacturer again to send the correct size. I am so happy to have found a place that honors their products and their customers so well. From outside, it looks like a a small place, but have a good amount of selection and the products seem to be good quality (solid wood bed frames etc.). Pretty funny but service takes forever. We got our mattress at this place several years ago, and we still love it. We went in because we weren't sleeping well, and we were waking up with back pain. The sales associate who helped us listened to what we had to say, asked relevant questions, then had us try out several of the mattresses they had on the floor. I was hesitant to try this shop out after I read some of the reviews. However, I must say my experience was great; Tom was friendly and super-helpful. I was inquiring about getting cushions made for our breakfast nook, and he patiently talked me through my different options (type of foam, thickness of foam, fabric choices, type of sewing, etc). Unfortunately, the price of the cushions was more than my husband wanted to spend, and he vetoed the purchase. I was bummed, because after seeing the samples that Tom showed me, I was confident that the cushions would have been beautifully made and of high quality. I highly recommend this place; they really know their stuff, and I personally experienced top-notch customer service. If my husband ever decides to bite the bullet regarding the breakfast nook cushions, this is the place I'll buy them from. read more

I recently went to Famous Foam Factory to get some cushions made for a breakfast nook. Tom was extremely courteous and helpful when I came in with my measurements. He explained all the factors I should consider when choosing foam and fabric (both new to me.) They do sell fabric but Tom didn't push me to buy their stock. I came back with my own fabric, got the cushions back and they were beautifully done. Alas, when I brought them home, I realized I had measured wrong and one of the cushions was too long. When I explained the situation, Tom offered to cut the cushion and have the fabric re-sewn - free of charge. His main concern was that I be happy with the final product. Amazing! It is great to know these small local businesses are still around and truly care about their relationships with customers. I highly recommend them. read more

I got two folding foam mattresses here on separate occasions. And I've read the other reviews and agree with the negative ones stating that customer service here is abysmal (that means really bad). Count on having to wait during inane conversations between sales people and other customers rage for many minutes, while you sit there unacknowledged. Count on incorrect estimates. The first mattress was OK, minus the poor interpersonal communications. But the second one has a terrible chemical odor to it that has not gone away in quite a while. And the store will not make good on it because they "cannot be sure where the odor came from." OK, so I am out about $250 and cannot sleep on the mattress because it smells so bad. I guarantee I will never return and advise others to avoid this place. I would be better off sleeping on the floor. But then, there are plenty of other places to buy foam. read more

I got my couch refoamed and Tom was extremely helpful. He addressed the issues I had with the current foam and helped me decide on a mixture of foams for my couch. I picked it up a week later and have been very happy with my couch. Tom really knew what he was talking about when discussing what type of foam should be in my thin, modern couch. If I had to get any other work done I'd go back to this place, even though I'm in SF and closer to the other foam store. The only problem was that they don't rebutton the foam to the leather, which I would gladly have paid for. I'll have to find someone to do that, but it was worth it to get a couch that is comfy to sit on again! Total for the new foam was about $200. read more

I'm surprised by the negative reviews here. I'm restoring a chair and needed to have cushions cut (in an odd shape). Tom helped me match them exactly, provided all kinds of helpful advice, and had the cushions done in less than 24 hours. I found him knowledgable, friendly, and thought he provided great customer service. The foam was pretty reasonable ($100 for 3 cushions, $25 of that was because I had to buy an entire roll of thin foam). I'd definitely use them again! read more

I would give 10 stars if I could. I recently had all of my couch/love seat cushions restuffed here and could not have asked for better service and product results! It's like I have new furniture! Not only was the entire process fully explained at my initial visit, I was able to try different types of foam to choose the right one for me. I initially took in 2 cushions, to make sure that this would work, and they were ready for pickup the next day. I quickly brought in the last 3 and explained that I had family coming in to town to visit within the next couple of days. Then cushions were completed and ready for pick up in less than 24 hours! I had a project and first I went to the place on Solano in Albany, because it is closer to me. the man there, who I assume was the owner, was extremely unhelpful, and did not know very much despite boasting about 30 years experience. I left that place and went to the Famous Foam Factory. This place is 100 times better. The woman that help me knew the materials and was willing to help me do what I needed to do. Whenever I need foam in the future, I have nothing to think about. the contrast between the two places was so extreme I decided to take the time to write this review. I initially called to see how to go about obtaining a foam set for a chair I found at an outlet store. I asked if I could bring the chair in for Tom to measure. He told me to make a template with paper rather than bring the chair in, which I thought was a bit silly but whatever. I made the template AND brought the chair in to be on the safe side. When I got to the store, Tom was personable and much friendlier than he was on the phone. We went through the different foam options and we settled on one that felt the best. Tom mentioned that it would have been nice to have the chair to confirm depth (I am not gonna say I told you so....but....) Fortunately, I had the chair in the car and we were able to confirm the template was done correctly and the thickness was right. It cost about $134 for foam and batting - which isn't that expensive having dealt with custom upholstery for several years on my last job and knowing that it can go easily double that price for soy foam. read more
