I arrived about 20 minutes before closing and wanted to try on a few items in the fitting room before making a purchase. When I asked to use the fitting room, the sales associate--who I later realized was the manager--responded in a way that felt rude and unnecessary. She told me that I was limited to six items, not to leave a mess, and that the store closes at 8. While I understand store policies and closing times, the way it was communicated felt dismissive and accusatory. I had just come from the gym and was dressed casually, and I couldn't help but feel that assumptions were made about me based on my appearance, as if I were going to leave a mess in the fitting room. As a frequent Nike shopper, I found this interaction disappointing and unwelcoming. To make matters worse, when I went to check out, the same manager switched places with another associate so she wouldn't have to assist me at the register.
