We stop here after visiting Linville falls. I am from NC so I like to find places that cook southern food. This place was not that great to me. I asked for fried chicken plate. Normally you can get dark or white meat. They don't give you an option which is strange. The waitress made a comment she never knew of anyone that doesn't like breast. She was weird. Anyway, this place is for sale & I can see why. My husband was not impressed either. Apple pie tasted like store bought. It is also very dangerous exiting the parking lot. My wife and I were exploring the area, as we are from out of town, and on the way to the caverns, saw the rock building and decided to try it out. First impression was a warm and welcoming atmosphere... cozy in fact. Our server was swamped with customers but immediately sat us and brought coffee to the table. She was very attentive and polite. We ordered the breakfast special and it was on our table in 5 minutes! The food was delicious and the biscuits and homemade jam rocked. We were very happy with our experience. 20 min to get to table for two of us, another 15 min for one of two waitresses to show (though friendly). After ordering the special (catfish fillets), was awarded dinner another 20 min later...waitress forgot the tartar sauce and butter...I went to the kitchen and asked for it...got it. Meanwhile, wife was looking dejected over her fish...I took a bite of mine and spit it out. Was not cooked...I don't mean cooked thru, I mean cooked...period. Raw catfish fillets with the bread coating brown...I finally got the waitresses attention and retrieved our check. I showed her the fish, and she said "Oh my! I'll let the cook know." That was that. Then, while standing in line to check out with another patron ahead of me, we waited another 15 min for some one to take our payments. This is a quaint little place that cooks food the way my mom did. Problem is she was an awful cook. I doubt there are any spices in that kitchen. The mashed potatoes were runny, which I did not think was possible, with no taste. One good thing is that they have salt and pepper on the table. Will not ever be back. read more

If I could not even rate this o would- this is as the nastiest place I've ever eaten- I waited over a half hour to be seated- even though employees looked at us and their was tables available-once seated waitress took our order; the horror show slowly continued- waited over 45 mins to get the food- my friend had a burger and onion rings - her food wasn't cooked fully and her onion rings were cold, my food the only thing was warm was the gravy- everything else was like they microwaved the gravy and took everything else out of refrigerator and called a day- waitress asked if we would like our bill but promptly walked to cash register to check us out- never giving the bill until after we paid- left very disappointed and looked at that bill- well surprise we were charged for pie that we didn't even eat or get- likely bc the waitress never gave us the bill until we paid and we looked at the bill 10 miles down the road- if this restaurant was the last place available to eat I would never go back- it was that gross- save your money and move on-I never give bad reviews but even a few days later my belly rolls just thinking how horrible this place was read more

I've been to Famous Louises's several times in the last few years. When I'm in the mood I enjoy the home cooking. We were there again at approx 1:45 on a Thursday afternoon in July. It makes me sad but that will probably be my last time there. It took only a few minutes to be seated. The waitress told us she would be back shortly. It didn't happen. We sat at our table for 25 minutes without even a glass of water. This was while we watched the wait staff go in and out of the kitchen to other tables. A couple at a nearby table felt sorry for us and offered us their water. I gave the wait staff five more minutes and walked out. I noticed that a young couple with a baby who were waiting to be seated did the same. Many businesses may have staffing problems now but this was one of the worst experiences ever. It must be a management problem. I hope they can fix it. read more

This review is a bit long, but it is for two visits. Let me put this at the beginning, their desserts are amazing. That is the only reason to go there. I gave it one star because there isn't an option to give zero, which I would have given based solely on the actions and attitude of the "manager." We first ate here on May 13th. Three of us ordered three different entrees. We ordered the fried green tomatoes for an appetizer. There were four, small, very heavily breaded tomatoes. At best, they were just barely ok. Our food was good; my husband said his burger was delicious. Afterwards, we all ordered dessert. This was their shining moment. The second time we ate there, just my husband and me, was May 26th. I didn't think it could be worse until I read some of the reviews here. We ordered the fried tomatoes, again, out of punishment I suppose. They were still heavily breaded and just barely ok. My husband ordered the grilled flounder lunch special. I ordered the fried lunch special. They arrived quickly, just after finishing the tomatoes. I'll start with mine: the french fries were the best thing on my plate. The flounder was just bland with not much, if any, seasoning. The cole slaw had large pieces of unchopped cabbage in it. Now for my husband's, and before I describe it let me just say, we have been married 38 years and he has NEVER sent food back! When the waitress sat our food down, I got an unpleasant whiff and commented, "ew, it sure smells fishy." Good, fresh flounder will not smell fishy. It didn't look broiled at all and there was no seasoning. He ate THREE bites and said there was something wrong with it and he couldn't eat it. He asked me to try it. I wouldn't put much more than a flake on my fork. He was right; that flounder was not good, and let me say here, because I will come back to this later, it was not good in that he just didn't like the flavor, it was not good as in the fish had gone bad. It took about five minutes to get our waitress' attention where he discreetly told her he couldn't eat it and to please bring him just a bbq sandwich. By the time he got that, I only had a few bites of my meal left. He said the bbq was really good. Then, we ordered dessert, their only saving grace. It was again delicious, even if the apple pie was barely luke warm. Now the part where if I could give less than zero stars, I would. We got the bill. His flounder plate and the bbq were on it. We went to the register to pay, he told the waitress about the bad flounder and that she needed to take it off for him to pay just for the french fries and bbq. She said she would have to talk to the manager. In just a minute, the manager, Louise, I assume, came to the register. My husband told her the same thing he told the waitress. She said, loud enough for the tables around to hear, and I quote "I'm not trying to be a bitch, but I have to make a living and just because you didn't like the flounder doesn't mean you don't have to pay for it!" I thought right then that no, she wasn't trying, she had the bitch part mastered and didn't have to try. We told her that he didn't like the flounder because it was bad. She was adamant there was nothing wrong with the flounder, and then had the audacity to say he didn't send it back. He told her that yes, when he told our waitress he couldn't eat it and asked for the bbq, she took the plate back to the kitchen, with only three bites missing from it! You could not make that rude woman understand that the fish was not good. She said, and again I quote, "that fish just came in this morning; I know it is fresh." Just because she "just got it that morning", doesn't mean it was fresh. She doesn't know how long the "chain of custody" had that fish before it got to her. We told her that we were from near the beach and knew what fresh fish taste like. She made a comment, that I didn't catch all of it about her husband being a salesman, and I don't know what she said after that or what it had to do with fresh fish vs rotten fish. She finally said that all she could do was comp half of the flounder plate, which is what my husband was asking for anyway. He told her he ate the fries and he ate the bbq sandwich, and that's what he should pay for. She took some off the bill, we paid and left. Down the road I asked if he had left the waitress a tip. In all the ruckus at the register, he forgot. So, we will go back one more time, just so we can give our waitress her tip. The only thing we will eat is dessert, and then I never intend to go back again and will tell my friends of our experience and advise them not to go, either. read more

My wife Sara and I always eat here before or after we trek up to our favorite vantage point to peer into the Linville Gorge, Wiseman's View. It's right across from the entrance to the Gorge and the Falls. This restaurant looks the same as it did when I first ate here 20 years ago. Great memorabilia on the walls, no A/C (even though you don't usually need it in the NC mountains), and assorted eclectic wooden tables and chairs scattered about. Laughing and talking interspersed with the sound of electric fans humming in the windows gives the place a homey feel. They even had what looked like a "owner's table" by the kitchen. Throughout our meal, different folks came and went through the back door, stopping in to eat free food and drink tea. Had to be friends and relatives. Pretty cool. The menu is packed with ever changing fresh vegetables and entrees; typically what we refer to a "meat and three" restaurant. Great southern fare. Meat loaf, fresh trout, pinto beans and onions, green beans, fried okra, etc. Great sweet tea and super homemade dinner rolls. Everything is seasoned well and delicious. A couple of the veggies needed salt, but otherwise they were fresh and tasty. I do think the fried okra was out of a frozen bag - as it tasted just like the fried okra that I usually order at my lunch spot "meat and three" in Charlotte. The real beauty of this spot is the homemade fruit PIES. This particular day they had blueberry, strawberry rhubarb, peach, and apple. All of them are served warm with a fat dollop of vanilla ice cream. It was fan-dam-tastic!! I highly recommend this place for any visit to the Linville area of the NC mountains. read more

In spite of the bad reviews my wife, myself, and the kiddos decided to give this place a try. Very disappointing, I should have trusted the reviews. 1) Food was so-so, not great at all. Beef tips and "mushroom gravy" was downright lousy. Gravy was straight out of a can, low grade can at that. 2) Service was very, very slow. Was not busy, about 2:30 pm on a Monday. Only 3-4 other tables even had customers. Took over 45 minutes for 4 simple entrees (two hamburgers, fried shrimp, and beef tips). 3) Never refilled our beverages. Wait staff hanging out in the back of the restaurant chit-chatting with each other. Had to flag down the wait staff just to get a refill on tea. 4) Two of the entrees were COLD, fried okra was COLD. But after waiting 45 minutes we couldn't wait any longer. I feel bad because it's not a chain, a hometown restaurant probably run by some good local folks. But I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone. Drive up the road and you'll find better choices. read more

We stopped in here after the girl at the winery suggested it to us. We were skeptical because of the 3.5 stars but we were hungry and heading to hike so figured we would give it a shot. We ordered the ham lunch special and got the strawberry rhubarb cobbler for dessert. The ham was good but would have been better with some brown sugar. The biscuit was unbelievable! Wish we were staying closer because I can imagine their breakfast would be fantastic! The mash potatoes were okay and the Mac and cheese side wasn't that good. I asked if it was homemade and they said yes but after tasting it I definitely didn't think so. ( I am very picky with Mac and cheese though). Now the cobbler. You need a great place to stop for great food & down home atmosphere? This is it! We were headed to Grandfather Mountain & this jewel sits along the side of the road. They have great country food such as macaroni & cheese, country fried steak, fried chicken, & baked apples. I had country fried steak with gravy on top & it was the best country fried steak I have ever eaten! The portions are more than you will be able to eat! We also loved our sassy waitress! We had to wait to be seated. Very courteous service and the server was quick with her suggestions. There was quite the wait for our food to arrive. Ultimately it was just ok. We go out of our way to go to Famous Louises Rockhouse when we come to western North Carolina. Everything we've ever ordered is delicious, the service great, and the atmosphere friendly. We love their blackberry pie although they have many different kinds which are equally yummy. We always order some pies to take home to our family and friends. Our food was delicious and the waitresses were very sweet. One of our crowd has a gluten allergy and there weren't too many options for her, but in a small town, we expected this.
