Somehow managed to mess up the simplest of haircuts/simplest of instructions after a slip of the hand. To their credit they did not charge me but the resulting adjustment for my hair was not exactly ideal either. After they changed barbers so that a more experienced one could cut my hair, they cut my ear with their clippers. Additionally, wait times were longer than usual and there weren't any clear instructions on where/when to sign in. Unpleasant experience overall. read more

We're going to try one of the more expensive salons to beg them to help her. I'm checking into suing these people. I'm a guy, so my recommendation for a place to get one's hair cut may not have broad application. But I also have hair that, if not cut properly, makes my head look like a dandelion (not at the sunny yellow stage but the white poofy stage), so I do have to be somewhat choosy. Fantastic Sam's does a consistently great job (of course, "great" hair is in the eye of the beholder; I mean that my hair looks the way afterward I hoped it would coming in). Plus, the shop is neither frou-frou nor "guy-pandering" (for the latter, think "Sports Clips," which reports to have "TVs tuned to sports all day long"...as if some sort of major sporting event is taking place at, say, 11:30 a.m. on a Monday). And the price is reasonable--$12 for a haircut. In case you remember Fantastic Sam's from childhood: no, the stylists no longer have to choose silly monikers like "Bubbles" or "Peaches" (well, unless you consider "Robert" a goofy nickname). ps: Ask for Robert. read more

I'm always hesitant to try new places, so I read reviews. This place had decent ones, so I tried it. While Lisa did not cut my hair as I requested, she didn't completely wreck it either. We talked about color and since she said she had "years of experience" I went back.! I wanted the frosted blonde taken down to a natural dark blonde. She turned me into a strawberry blonde! I'm not picky about my hair and I normally go to super cuts or fantastic sams with no hesitation. However, I've regretted coming to this location, both times I've been here. People here are just unprofessional and overly sassy. The first time the stylist rushed and finished within ten minutes. Very "meh" and had a ton of missed hairs and seemed pretty choppy. Went here today and "stylist" Jamie was just in foul mood. Described what I wanted as a less intense faux hawk, but apparently it wasn't specific enough. Just started shaving very quickly and the shears pulled out some hair. When I asked if she could cut it shorter similar to cut another customer had across the room, she just proceeded to say it was perhaps my fault since I wasn't specific enough and kept yanking at my hair. Enough was enough, and I just asked her to stop since I did not appreciate her condescending attitude. She then huffed and puffed and stormed to the back. It was literally so bad, that I left mid way into a cut. I can understand if she was just having a rough day, but that's no excuse for blaming the customer for her own incompetence and yanking on hair... Save your time and money and support a local shop instead.. read more

Layne has been cutting my hair for several years. It says something abt how awesomely talented and consistent she is that I have followed her to a couple of other places, although I first met her in Midtown and I'm glad she ended up back here. I cannot speak highly enough of her, not just as a hairstylist but as a human being. She is best known for her women's styling, esp coloring, but trust me, guys, she is great with men's cuts too. Lisa has been doing my eyebrows for the past 1.5 years and she's wonderful! She's careful to not take off too much and they are always even. I've also had my hair trimmed here many times. I'm in the process of growing it out, and this is the only place I've been to where I haven't had an issue with the stylist cutting off 3-4 inches when I only asked for 1/2. read more

Whenever frequenting a hair salon, it's always an adventure as no salon has 2 stylists who cuts hair the same. Within a service industry, you always have to consider the person that's actually performing the service, not just the business itself. So in essence, my review really is a review of Heather at Fantastic Sams. Heather has given me 2 haircuts now, and she is definitely a person who knows how to cut Asian hair! Being blessed with some super straight (or curly depending on relative viewpoints lol) hair, any messed up edge will show easily. Heather has been able to cut my hair with precision; she can definitely blend men's hair with the best of them. She is extremely able with some clippers and shears! If you're a guy who's pretty particular with their hair, I highly recommend Heather @ Fantastic Sams. She can take awhile to warm up to you, but she's actually really nice beneath her poker face. As for the decor at FS, it's clean and bright. It's bigger than your average Haircuttery or Supercuts, and it's a notch above in the facilities in my opinion, all for the same price. read more

Tucked away on a busy corner in Midtown sits a great place to get your hair done. As one who needs to look as my mom said halfway presentable but who doesn't care to take time to visit a salon and who grew up in the world of the barber shop, I believe i have found a suitable compromise. Their detailed records will let the stylist know which guard to use and makes things much more uniform if you have to pop in without realizing its her day off. I. LOVE. this. place. I wish I could give 6 stars. I live in Mississippi. And trying to find a salon around here that would cut my female hair into a men's cut was pretty impossible. Thank God for Kelly. That girl celebrates who I am with her scissors and has the magical ability to make me look as badass as I want to feel. Unlike other salons, she reserves her judgements and treats me like a human being instead. I have always felt so wonderful walking into this place and knowing that my hair AND my soul are about to be cleaned up. I love Kelly the most, but I HIGHLY recommend seeing any of the stylists at this particular location. It's like a family run place with corporate pricing. You can have the family atmosphere without paying twice as much. It really is the best of both worlds. Everyone is always having a good day (even when they're not...lol) and I ALWAYS leave in a much better mood than when I came in. Thank you Kelly!! I used to frequent this location several years ago, there were issues with the staff then, and I was not happy with the cuts or the color. After being away for at least five years I decided to go back and give them another try. What I experienced was above and beyond what I had hoped for. I was assigned to a stylist named Shelbi, and was impressed with her from the time she introduced herself to me, until I checked out after getting my haircut. Once seated, I noticed a plaque on her counter stating she was top sales associate. I wondered why, but as we began talking about how to cut my hair, I got my answer. Shelby is pleasant, friendly, engaging, and offered options that I might not have thought of. She was sympathetic to the woes of not having a stylist do would you ask them to do. This is been my experience in the location in the past, as well as the chain I recently left. I'm very happy w/the cut & look forward to getting color done there soon also. Their prices are very comparable to the previous chain & I don't have to drive from midtown to Wolfchase to sit and wait for 45 mins to an hr just to be seen, due to the other location not being staffed properly. I asked for a simple high top fade. The stylist either didn't care or didn't know what that was. She buzzed the sides and used scissors on top to give it a finger length but with no shape at all. My head is round and that's the shape of my haircut now. That is not the shape of a high top fade. I would have been better off asking my roommate to buzz it all the way around. read more

I usually go here to get my haircut. It's close to my house. They also type in what I get in the computer and ask me if I want the same thing. I can't do 5 because some stylists are better than others. I've never had a bad haircut, but some are better than others. It's cheap. They do what I want. They usually don't have a wait. read more

It was my third time going to Fantastic Sams today on McLean. The first two times were average. The third time was not the charm. The woman who cut my hair cut it the last time and knew that I wanted a trim on top, the sides short, and faded up. She proceeded to buzz half of the top of my head. She said that she was distracted, because we were talking, so she more or less forgot what she was doing. She was very apologetic, but obviously I was furious. I had to have someone else finish the job, because I was honestly too upset with her to let her do it. I wanted to buzz the rest of it myself, but they wouldn't allow that. They were nice enough to not charge me, but there was no way I was paying anyway. Long story short, I know it was an accident, but this is an accident that shouldn't happen. I presented a printout of the haircut I wanted and it illustrates how to fade from the base to the occipital bone for a Men's classic cut: "Short back and Sides". The stylist disregarded everything I said and ignored the instructions for the cut I wanted. She didn't fade the hairline at all; just used a 1 guard all the way up the sides. The back was totally shaven. I am left with what looks like a bowl cut from the front and in the back it's just ridiculous with a few strands barely covering the back of my head. It doesn't match at all. Looks nothing like the simple hair cut I requested. Also note that I told the stylist I was letting my hair grown out long. She removed 6+ months of growth! read more

If I could give Zero stars, I would. My hair was shoulder length. I wanted a short cut, and showed a photo to the stylist. I don't recall her name. She was doing front desk duty too. Anyway, she cut it so short, there is no room for a reputable stylist to fix it. It's just going to have to grow out. I'm disgusted. I have to go back to work in a few days, and i'm trying to figure out how to style my hair so it looks halfway decent. She acted like she just wanted to finish it, and get back to the chair at the front desk. Didn't say a word to me while cutting my hair.... just hacked away until she was finished. I was kind of in shock when I paid and left. I'm not a confrontational person, so I didn't say anything. I'm sure she could tell from body language and my frown that I wasn't happy. My boyfriend and I went here to get his haircut. He hadn't gotten a haircut in awhile, so it wasn't just a simple cut. We were seated immediately and had Lisa, who was so friendly and quick in the cut! We showed her pictures of the styles we liked and she helped us choose which style would look best on him. She was super friendly, finished the cut in 20ish minutes, and took time with it. Her efficiency was great and we had such a pleasant experience. The price is also way cheaper than most salons. I've been to this location twice and have mixed feelings. I feel I need to preface this review with saying I don't go to salons. For the past decade my cousin (a stylist) has always cut my hair on the side or I just do a buzz cut at home, so I'm not used to salon etiquette. The first time I went I enjoyed the interaction and had a good visit with the front desk and stylist. My only complain was when I asked her if she did beard trimmings there were no follow up questions, and she immediately cut my beard too short. Then she proceeded to cut it higher on my neck, and when I got home had I had to fix it because it went in a diagonal across my neck. I went last week and will not return after the service. I have worked in customer service positions and understand people having a bad day, so tend to be very tolerant. However, there is no excuse for making a customer feel uncomfortable and like they were at fault when the provider simply could have been better. When I walked in there was no one at the front desk. I didn't know I just had to sign a sheet and was stared at by a stylist like I was stupid. She 'kindly' let me know to sit down and wait. The desk attendant eventually showed up. Once I was called up and seated with a stylist, she asked if I wanted to stick with a 1, but I had no idea what the last stylist had used. Overall, the hair cut was okay, but the interaction made me feel uncomfortable. I don't know hair and clipper terms well, and it was just an awkward interaction. When we were done, she cleaned me up using the hair dryer and kept blowing hot air all over me. She didn't use the little brush thing like they normally do to brush anything away. I asked her if that was it (I was expecting the brush), and she said "yeah." Once I put my glasses on I saw she had left hair all over my neck, forehead and face. I went in the bathroom and cleaned up, and went to the desk to pay. Again, no one was there and I had to wait five minutes for the stylist to get the attendant. I told him the service wasn't worth the over priced trim I got (took five minutes) and explained about the waiting and hair all over. He said there's nothing they could do about the hair, so I commented it would have been nice if they just cleaned it off. He tried to give me a couple of coupons for my wait, but the services and attitudes were just so bad I put them on the counter and walked out. I won't be returning. read more

Don't have your eyebrows waxed here. I came in to have my browline cleaned up. I thought it hurt quite a lot more than usual, but I didn't realize why until it was done. My eyebrows are WAY too thin and have a goofy arch to them. All I can do is try to fix them up with some brow powder and hope they grow in rather quickly. UGH! read more

The receptionist lied to us about how long it would take before particular stylist was open, failed to tell us that even after putting our name on the list are leaving and coming back would result in us going behind other customers. When we came back, the receptionist lied about how many people were ahead of us. In the end, after an hour and 45 minutes both waving we were told it would be at least another hour and a half. I have brought my teen boys here three times. The first time a lady cut his hair a little too long on top and he asked if she could cut it slightly shorter. She looked annoyed and just buzzed it completely. He was mortified. Later we got another cutter for him and she cut his ear so it was bleeding. No apology or acknowledgement. Third kid went in, showed a picture of a traditional cut and she gave him a borderline Mohawk not only that but in side was shorter than the other. He said she was visibly upset toward the end and was going very fast. She then blamed it on his communication, even though he showed her a picture. Finally she just complained she was tired, so it wasn't her fault. He's blinking back tears thinking about walking into class tomorrow. I could do a better job. I'm not going back. read more

I went to Fantastic Sams to get a trim. I specifically told "Heather" that I only wanted to just "clean it up a bit". She butchered my hair. Remember that scene in "Mommie Dearest" with the setting lotion? What Joan Crawford did to that child's hair? Well mine is worse than that. She didn't even take off my side burns like I asked. Then, she argued with me telling me that, "She really didn't feel that she had taken that much off." Because, of course her opinion on what she did to my hair is more important than what I think about the fact that she completely ignored what I asked of her. Then she told me that my hair was just, "Really hard to cut." Funny how all of the other stylists there never had a problem with it before her. Now I look like f*%$-ing Squiggy from "Laverne and Shirley". Today was the first day I have ever understood how someone could cry over their haircut. I don't even mind that she looked like she was stoned, or was completely unperson-able, that comes in so much a distant second to the job she did on my hair. I am forced to wear a hat. Seriously folks, I wish I could include a picture on here to show you just how much I am NOT exaggerating. Helen Keller could have done a better job. I encourage anyone reading this to avoid "Heather" at all costs. I will never go back to this place again, which is a shame as I had been going there since it opened. But after what was done to me today, I just can't risk it. read more
