Horrible experience. They overbook their services and then made it feel like it was our fault for booking through Groupon (even though it's a service they opted-into). They called us two days ahead of the booking to say they overbooked and didn't have a guide for us, we said we were told a week prior in a phone call that we were doing an unguided trip, so then they said they didn't have any rafts for us to use the day we booked. We pushed back since this was the only day we could do and had already paid for it - they finally were able to "find us" a raft and re-confirmed a 4-hour unguided raft trip. We get there, get in the water and after an hour and a half of floating, we were done? We then asked to speak with someone since we thought maybe we weren't on the right trip, but they said that's the only drop in for unguided trips. The manager, Liz said it was our fault it took less than four hours and we should have stopped to swim (which we were planning to do at the 2-hour mark of a 4-hour trip) and that there was "nothing she could do" since we booked through Groupon. There was never any acknowledgment of our bad experience or any inconvenience, her only response was that there was nothing she could do and that they could tell we weren't having a good time (yet then no followup on any offer of trying to make it better). She said the only thing we could do was call Groupon and we could speak with the owner when he returned from running errands (he never called). The only upside was the water we did do was very enjoyable and Travis, the guide who dropped us off, who was the only person who tried to do what he could to make our experience enjoyable and was the only one to say I'm sorry or acknowledge that we didn't have the best experience. Don't be fooled - this company does not care about your experience if you use a third party service. read more

Enjoyed a wonderful day rafting the Taos Box with these guys. We were led by ace NZ guide Brian, and he kept the day fun and engaging (and safe!) from beginning to end. My wife and I have done rafting trips with Far-Flung over the years and really enjoyed them. My personal favorite is the whitewater trip on the Taos Box, which has class 4+ rapids and is really a blast. I've also done a multi-day trip on the Chama, which is tamer but beautiful scenery and a great experience. I've done rafting trips all over the world and Far Flung guides do a great job, very professional and competent, friendly and engaging. I never had any worries about our safety in the big rapids. I also appreciate the fact that Far Flung has been a leader in river conservation in New Mexico. read more

Did the Saddle+Paddle. Basically a 2 hour horseback ride, half hour hike downhill, and 2 hours of rafting. Everything was great. Our horse guide was Payton who was great! Amazingly scenic views through out the day. The rafting is pretty relaxed which is welcome after the horseback riding, a few rapids intermixed but mostly calm river rafting. Both the horseback riding and the rafting are done in pretty secluded areas, so you're not stuck running into a bunch of other groups. One piece of advice: Bring BUG SPRAY. read more

I ran the Chama River with Far Flung. The trip was perfect: our guides knew what they were doing on the river, and gave us adventure, but kept us safe. Unlike some trips I've done with other companies, the timing was good- two full days, rather than a short day and an overly long day. Food was great! I have to add that the company is dedicated to river protection. So, the guides can address any questions that might arise about how the rivers are managed and what we can do to help protect them for future generations. read more

We came up for the memorial day weekend and went to far flung adventures to see if they were running the box. They just had a ton of rain and they were able to book it the next day since it was high enough. We were the only ones on the trip since they had been unsure that it would be high enough. They were awesome and totally accommodating. They suited us up with wet suits and splash guards (it was cold!). Our guide was Wild Bill! He was extremely knowledgeable about all of the history, wildlife, and culture as well as being fun and a great teacher! The lunch they provided was awesome, they make their own dips which are so good as well as Wild Bill made us a potato salad from scratch on the spot- it was delicious and nutritious; definitely needed for the second part of the course which was more physically demanding. Overall I would recommend anyone going to Taos to use Far flung and try the box- it was unreal how beautiful and fun that trip was. Highly recommended!! read more

I just got back from Taos, NM for a birthday celebration with my sister. Taos is a wonderful place to hang out! I booked the half day Race Course AM trip with Far Flung Adventures in advance and spoke to Sharon about how the river conditions were effecting the trips. I knew of the water issues on the Rio Grande. She said that it wasn't really effecting what they do. Maybe so, but it definitely effected the raft trip! There was NO WHITEWATER to speak of. How terribly disappointing. Humph. I would have preferred a bit more honesty on the company's part regarding that FACT. On a positive note, after a slow start to the river, our guide Hank was a hoot and a holler, a performance artist in his own right. He definitely tried to make the most of a LOW river situation. For a beginner, the trip was a good initiation on the river and gave us the opportunity to learn the paddle commands without the level stress or fear that may have otherwise been there. A word of warning though...don't ask a certain guide for help trying to put on those life jacket contraptions or you may end up looking like a Swedish meatball dipped in mustard! I can't wait to do the river again when it's back UP! I will probably use a different company though... NOTE: Regarding Pilar Yacht Club (tongue in cheek)...Don't bother using the link to pre-order your lunch when you make your river trip reservation. That was a joke! On their website they tout 'pre-order your lunch online to take advantage of preferential service...and enjoy a shorter wait time'. NOT! Our food wasn't prepared or even ready for us when we came in. There was a long line and when I showed the owner my printed pre-order instead of immediately taking it to the kitchen (directly two paces behind him) he placed it on the counter out of his way. He then had the audacity to tell me that he would help me after he finished helping all the people in line. He wasn't lying about THAT. According to what he told one of the customers he was helping, everything is pre-cooked. It would not have been difficult at all to take care of my order in a more timely manner. My family and friends all love Far Flung! We've been rafting with them many times, on the Chama, the Arkansas, and the Rio Grande, but we keeping coming back to the Chama; a 3 day, 2 night trip down a lovely river through varied landscape -- mountain/forest, deep red/gold canyons, high desert. The guides are wonderful: warm friendly people, very knowledgeable about the geology and wildlife, and some of them can also speak to river restoration and preservation. The food is delicious, and they take very good care of you on the river. Sometimes they bring a guest musician on a special music trip. Trips with music are magical! If _you_ are a musician, inquire about bringing along a camping-friendly instrument in a dry bag, to play beside the campfire. If you are interested in trying an inflatable kayak called a duckie, and going solo along beside the big rafts, try the Chama. The Chama is a great river to have a go at trying duckies for beginners, it's safe and not too scary, but with some spicy riffles and small rapids to learn on and hold your attention. It is always nice to have at least a few duckies in a group on the Chama; someone will want to try it, and you can take turns. If you're feeling very adventurous and looking for adrenaline rushes, the Arkansas has some wild rapids and wild scenery. But if your seeking peace and a renewed spirit, Far Flung can help you find it on the graceful Chama. My family has done a lot of rafting, several different companies, many rivers now. Far Flung is our favorite company, we love the people, we love the rivers they share. read more
