The BBQ Barn - Opened Whoopie Pie - a little messy but good

My husband and I looked for the best BBQ places in the area and landed on The BBQ Barn. A small and cute little barn sits in the corner of the plaza (on the right of Target). We ordered chicken and rib dinners with an extra pulled pork sandwich (we ordered way too much but needed to try it all!!). Dinner plates come with Cole slaw, a dinner roll, potatoes, and a whoopie pie. There is seating outside. We both agreed that the chicken may have been the best we have ever had. It was seasoned so well and perfectly cooked. The ribs came with bbq sauce on the side. There was a line, but service was quick and efficient. The grills are right in front and you can see the cooking happening! Inside the barn, I could see them rolling out fresh pretzels. They also had homemade root beer, which was very good! After we finished eating, I couldn't help but grab a vanilla ice cream cone to share with my dogs. They agree too, best soft serve ice cream we have ever had. Since getting home, we have already talked about how we need to plan a trip back to Lancaster to get more BBQ and explore the area a bit longer.

Drive to the Target just west of the American Music Theatre and head to the far east side of the Target, driving back around the side of the building and the restaurant will be on your right. Watch for small signs directing you to the BBQ Barn. Review: Very good pulled pork sandwiches with lots of meat for a very reasonable price. Full meal is a great deal that includes three small grilled red potatoes, a small coleslaw, roll, whoopie pie, and drink for $12.50-$14.00 depending on your meat and beverage choice. They sell "homemade" root beer that I tried and it was good and tasted like the original drove in A&W root beer except it lacked carbonation. We had a sandwich plus one full meal for about $20 and left a small tip. Note that this is a casual place with outdoor seating only, similar to a food truck. Thankfully the picnic table seating is mostly in the shade. I do recommend this place for a quick lunch or dinner and noticed local Amish eating there while we had lunch. today.

I personally ordered the beef brisket, the fried chicken with a side of Mac and cheese and seasonal vegetables. First the good, the fried chicken was fried perfectly with a nice crispy and so moist. The best part of the meal. The sides were good with a cheesy Mac and cheese. I was disappointed with the brisket. Although it had good flavor, it was super dry and those who ordered the brisket at our table agreed. We also ordered the whoopie pies which were disappointing as well. Would I come back...yes but would not order the brisket or dessert.

The Burnt ends appetizer was the best I have ever had. The meat was super tender and the white horseradish was so good on it we bought 12oz to take home. Honestly that could have been my dinner it was that good. The pulled pork was good it passed my husband's test since he's from NC and still looking for one like home. The spaetzle was amazing, and as good as my mother in law made. Well better. And she's German. Such a great find. It will be on our list every-time we come back to Lancaster.

First, let me say this is a local family restaurant, the service has always been good, and the…read morerestaurant is clean. I have eaten here several times, and while I appreciate that it is a local establishment, the food quality is much closer to what I would expect from a school cafeteria than from a traditional family restaurant. That may sound harsh, but it is honestly how the food comes across to me. The issue is not the service or the cleanliness; it is the quality, presentation, and value of the food itself. One thing I have noticed during my visits is how heavily they promote their "Pot Pie," including advertising on the backs of the servers' shirts that says, "Make Pot Pie Legal." Since Wednesday's special is all-you-can-eat Chicken Pot Pie, I decided to try it. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The presentation was not appealing, and the food looked more like a scoop of gravy and potatoes than what I expected from chicken pot pie. There was very little chicken, chunks of potato, and gravy, but no other identifiable vegetables. I ordered a side of peas and added them myself. There was also no pie crust at all. When I asked about it, I was told that "chicken pie" has crust and "pot pie" does not. I understand there may be a regional distinction, especially in Pennsylvania Dutch-style cooking, where chicken pot pie can refer more to a chicken stew with dough or noodle-like pieces rather than a baked pie with crust. I found that interesting and did not argue the point. That said, even allowing for that distinction, this dish was still disappointing. If it is not meant to have a pie crust, I would still expect a hearty chicken dish with a better balance of chicken, vegetables, and some type of dough, noodle, or dumpling-style element. What I received was mostly potatoes and gravy, with very little chicken. I paid the all-you-can-eat price, but I could not finish the first plate. Overall, the meal was disappointing. In my opinion, the pricing is high compared to the quality. My wife does like their chicken strip salad, which is why we continue to go occasionally, but this particular special is not something I would order again.

The bread for the sandwich was toasted but soggy and squashed. The bacon was good. The "hand cut fries" seemed like they were commercial frozen. Under cooked and soggy. We rarely turn down the opportunity to try some good BBQ. Large and roomy with plenty of tables. Chalkboard menu and the distinct Smokey smell in the air. We were flagged down by a guy behind the counter, eager to welcome us and explain the ordering process. Within minutes our food was ready for us. A pulled pork and chicken sandwich. Both cooked just right and full of flavor. Hush puppies, potato salad and fries rounded out our meal. All equally up to par. In the back dining room there is a bar pouring out their signature house made brews. Very casual, very friendly atmosphere.

Sides were tasty too. Enjoyed a handful of free peanuts and the fountain sodas include a few you don't see everywhere which is fun. Comfortable decor inside and a lot of outdoor seating too. Nice play area for the kids. Great place to hang out with the family and have some good food. Only disappointment was the number of sides they didn't have. We were there early Saturday dinner, like 430, and they were indeed busy. But more than they planned I guess because as we waited in line a guy kept coming out and putting red line through things. No corn bread. No baked beans. No mac and cheese. Huh???
