In my continuing efforts to get a hot dog in each county in Virginia, I pulled into Farmer's Cafe for lunch on a Wednesday in Nottoway County, Virginia. The interior is pretty dark with dark woods on the walls, the one picture window in the front, and sporadic lighting throughout. They weren't super busy when I arrived and for a window of time, I was the only guest in the restaurant. I was there for a hot dog and, given the toppings that were available, ended up with cole slaw and mustard. The hot dog came with chips but I asked for potato wedges as the side. The food came out quickly as a plain hot dog on a plate with chips and potato wedges. Clearly we had a bit of miscommunication. I ate a few wedges before the server came by, looked at my hot dog, and noticed things were missing. She went to the kitchen window and brought back a small cup of cole slaw with her apologies. I DIY'd my hot dog and ate it down along with the wedges and chips. The chips were store bought. The Wedges were well cooked with those bites that were crispy on the outside and really soft potato goodness on the inside. I wish I had been offered a refill on my drink during my meal. All in all, it was a fine meal at Farmer's Cafe. read more

Stopped at this place this evening and ordered the catfish dinner. they close at 8pm but they locked the doors 30 minutes early. My catfish was not done all the way through and slimy in the middle. I immediately lost my appetite and asked for a box rather than ask to cook it some more because I knew they locked the door and wanted to leave. I have been here before, but it was owned and operated by someone else. I don't see this place lasting long. read more

Food was good but man was the service slow. Wasn't a quarter full but took the lady over 10 minutes to bring me a menu and she never brought a ticket when I was done. Had to walk up to the register, but for all I know that is what you're supposed to do. It looks like an old time diner a la Cracker Barrel inside. read more

Great little local restaurant! Plenty of room and definitely the choice of "locals"! Ate there twice while on this little town for govt. training. Food choices were vast and food was all very good. They would literally make anything you could ask for and the breakfast was filling and tasty! Service was excellent and prices were good. Highly recommended! read more

I have recently had two very good breakfasts at the Farmer's Cafe in Blackstone! The food was very good and reasonably priced in today's crazy world. If they could do anything better it would be fill your coffee cup a little more often. That said the coffee is very good. Blackstone has needed a good breakfast place and for me this fills that need. I came in n for breakfast and was absolutely delighted. Great hometown restaurant with Solis food and great friendly service. All three of us had something different and were delighted. Great pancakes, great omelette, perfectly done bacon and first class coffee. For myself, I took advantage of the scrambled eggs and pigs brain. It sounds weird, but it was delicious and done well (which is somewhat of a challenge). I have not eaten there for anything but breakfast, but I will be back for that again, and dinner when I get a chance. read more

The best all around cafe in Blackstone. The Sheriff department and local police all eat here so that should tell you something. Inside is a warm cozy atmosphere where you will find soldiers from Fort Pickett and tons of locals all chowing down. The food is awesome, good old fashioned country cooking. It's a shame they are no longer open in the evening and limited weekend hours. They are looking for good help in the kitchen which they promise to bring back longer hours read more

Definitely a farmer's place to be. Nice kitchen for the locals. General Southern homestyle cooking. This place probably has more appeal to you if you grew up around here. After half-a-dozen visits I haven't had much luck finding something so good on the menu that I was compelled to come keep returning. Then again, I'm not a local farmer either. My favorite item on the menu is probably the Mexican Salad and Hot Chocolate (It's really hard to be mediocre on Hot Chocolate). I was told the coffee is good too but I don't drink coffee. read more

Definitely try this place if you are looking for an affordable comfort food lunch or dinner in Blackstone. I had the turkey and dressing with greens, baked apples and a roll. It was a large delicious meal that was very affordable. I will be going back. read more

Great country food at reasonable prices. Sometimes you just want your good 'ol country food, and this location in downtown Blackstone is where you can get that hanker'in taken care of. We came down here for lunch and everyone walked away satisfied. I had the country fried steak with mac&cheese as well as fried okra. I found no faults with the food and the plate left my table completely empty (and then I spent the next 2 hours fighting the sleep-ies at work). Simple menu and classic cooking. Not much more you can ask for. read more

Poor service - waited close to 45 minutes for breakfast food. Average food - I can cook better omelettes at home. I also had to substitute toast for my biscuit and still got charged full price. Table behind us was served cold food, so they didn't eat and got up and left after a long wait. From someone who's worked in the food and beverage industry, there are a lot of improvements to be made from a managerial standpoint in the kitchen and out on the floor with the customers. If this place had any good competition, it would have been out of business a long time ago. read more

I came in with a party of 8 people. We all ordered at the same time, only 7 people received their food. There was a table of 8 soldiers behind us who ordered 10 mins after us received their food and finished as well while the lone person in our party still had not received their food yet. We then watched other people come in, be served, eat, and leave. The waitress then proceeded to tell the patron he still had to pay for half his meal. Even after we talked to the waitress several times about the meal, we still we informed that we needed to pay. The patron left the food after it was brought out in a to-go box. I took the ticket and informed the person at the cash Register that we were not going to pay for the food b/c of the service we received. The waitress still had a very sh!tty attitude towards us, when all we wanted to do was eat. What made things worse was that the patron who did not receive his food, was the one who recommended the place for us to eat there and he got the raw end of the deal. The waitress needs to either be fired or have some more customer service training. read more

Walked in about 1:45 PM, no one acknowledged us. A server walked past us to put silverware on other tables, and never even offered a menu or told us if we needed to go to the counter to order. This was the second restaurant in Blackstone that ignored us today. We left. read more

Only reason I ended up here was because there isn't much else open on a Monday. I really wish there was something else open because I watched tables around me order food, eat, and pay before mine ever showed up. The food itself was horrible and generally disgusting. I ordered the chicken tender dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans. The chicken tenders were straight from a freezer with no seasoning, the mashed potatoes were warmed in a microwave, and the green beans tasted like grocery stores canned crap. When asking the waitress for an itemized receipt she provided one that just said food or drink for each item. I'll never return. read more

The biscuits and gravy is my favorite menu item, the waffles are amazing, and i love the hash brown circle things.

I am local and eat here often. It's been around forever so it's not fancy, A little run down and dated but don't let that stop you. The food is freshly made, from scratch, country cooking and the desserts are wicked. Try the blueberry cheese cake or for a lite treat just order fried apples. The prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly and efficient. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed! read more

It's a friendly small town restaurant with a decor and atmosphere that makes me feel like I'm back in time as a kid eating out with my grandparents (which to me is a good thing). It's my favorite local place for breakfast food. Every meal I've had there has been good. read more

We stop here for a quick bite on our way home from Lynchburg. Great little spot with good county cooking. Had the special which was Fried Catfish and Frog Legs. both were great. Dad & Mom got catfish too and love it. My sister and niece got the BBQ sandwich and they also enjoyed their meal. My wife got a grilled chicken salad which she also was very satisfied even though the selection of dressing was mundane.
