SANDWICHES! Who doesn't love a good sandwich? Plus when you've got a sandwich shop that falls under the same umbrella as the likes of Three Boars, High Dough, and Wishbone... You know that they've gotta be good. VUE Weekly named Farrow as the #1 Best Sandwiches 2018 and Avenue Magazine awarded them Best Sandwiches 2019 and Best Quick Meal 2020. They started out as one small location in Garneau in 2014 but have since expanded to three different shops (all in pretty hip areas of the city). I am someone who loves to crush a good sandwich and have been very excited to try Farrow for a long time. I popped into their original location on a gorgeous Friday fall evening. It should be noted that the Garneau location is the only one of the three that stays open until 7pm, making dinnertime sandwiches possible. The rest operate more as breakfast or lunch spots. The shop is small, with a chalkboard menu, a counter to order at, and not much else. The colour scheme is a somewhat graphic-styled black and white. The focus is solely on sandwiches, coffee and baked goods. It completely embodies the idea of providing an easy place to grab a quick (yet delicious!) breakfast or lunch on the go. And that's exactly where Farrow stands out and apart from the rest: this place offers quality. The sandwich menu usually involves four different choices. Two of the sandwiches are always on the menu and are always available, while the other two rotate every few weeks. I figured that it would be a good idea to try a sandwich from each of these categories. The people working at the shop were wonderfully friendly. They were so happy to help accommodate and made sure that I had everything that I needed. I was planning to take my sandwiches to the park area just south of the restaurant and sit at a picnic table to eat them. This idea worked out perfectly and I highly recommend it! Once your order is placed, you exit the shop and wait outside by the pick-up window. Farrow has installed a sandwich slide and it's the most incredible thing ever. When your sandwich is ready they'll slide it down the chute and into your eager hands! I absolutely love this. My first sando selection was the Chief Beef (Roast beef, horseradish mayo, pickled red onions, ruffle chips, greens - $10.50). This is one of the ones that is typically always available and I had to try it, especially if it's basically one of their signature sandwiches. I loved this. It tasted super fresh and it was just a good, solid sandwich. The bread was grainy and tasted homemade. I loved the tender roast beef, slight tangy heat from the mayo, and hit of acidity from the red onions. But most of all, I loved the addition of the ruffle chips because they added such an incredible crunch to each bite. This thing is basically a lesson in exactly what a good, simple sandwich should be. Next I tried the Chili Ray Cyrus (Chili pork, refried beans, diced onion, shredded cheddar, crispy jalapeño, greens, sour cream - $12.50) which is one of the ones that rotates on the menu. This sandwich was different from the first one in the sense that the previous sando felt quite classic. Whereas this one tasted more like a flavour punch in the face. Both are excellent in their own way! I adored the bread on this one, so soft and fresh with a great crustiness. The flavours were big in a Tex-Mex sort of way. The pork was ultra savoury and delicious and there was a hit of heat. I found myself really enjoying the diced onion a lot (which surprised me!) because it added a great texture and flavour that worked. I barely noticed that there was any cheddar on the sandwich but there was a lot of (good) things going on and a lot of the flavours were kinda mashing together. I can definitely see a habit forming where I am going to need to try all of their rotating sandwiches all the time. I didn't order a coffee to drink because it was already pretty late in the day and I didn't want to be awake all night. However, I certainly did need to try some of their baked goods which are made in-house by their talented team of pastry magicians. These also rotate regularly, so I grabbed what was speaking to me at the moment: a Carrot Cake Donut and a Pumpkin Caramel Cronut. Both of these were incredible. They felt perfectly seasonal and you had better believe that I enjoyed eating them as the leaves gently blew off the trees all around me. The carrot cake donut had a great yeast donut base that wasn't too sweet or greasy. The cream cheese icing was exactly what you would expect on carrot cake. Plus the chunks of actual carrot cake, sunflower seeds and raisins were truly delightful. The pumpkin caramel cronut was pretty next-level. If you've ever had a cronut before, you know that it's the sinful lovechild between a croissant and a donut. The sugary pastry is very croissant-esque except that this one was stuffed with spicy-sweet pumpkin filling, a very welcome discovery. The caramel glaze on top was the literal icing on the cake.

    Sandwiches of the day!

The best sandwich shop in town! This location is tucked away on 109 Street, which is great if you're heading for a walk around the Ave. They have a rotating selection of sandwiches and they always have a veggie option. Actually this is where I discovered that candied jalapenos are delicious on a sandwich! They also have some treats! Usually a selection of donuts and cruellers, which is worth it. It can be a bit of a wait around the lunch hour, so come early and be ready for a bit of a wait. Also there's a few picnic tables nearby or you could head closer to the U of A to enjoy your sammie outside!

Eggnog cronuts - melt in your mouth

I had to try the hype that is their cronuts- and they met the hype. I got the eggnog filled ones with caramel and they were light and flaky and basically melted in your mouth. They were actually better than I expected which is always a good thing. I ordered over the phone in the morning for pick up after work and their order and pick up process was easy and the staff were nice on the phone and efficient when I was there.

Farrow Sandwiches is hip(ster) and small. The entrance looks like you're about to walk into someone's apartment but don't fret, once you open the door, you'll know you're in the right place. But seriously, the place only has three stools to sit! Soooo small but the vibe is cool and the music is bumpin'. Hip hop music? Yes, please, all day 'errday. The music they had playing was pretty sweet, some sort of French rap/hip hop mix. There are four sandwiches to choose from that rotate on a daily basis. The only sandwich that is stable is the Grick Middle. As I just had a banh mi recently in Chinatown (helloooooo $4 deals at Van Loc). I thought I'd give their take on banh mi a shot and see if paying double the price tag would be worth it. - Banh mi over Baghdad ($9) - spiced pulled pork, cucumbers, daikon and carrot slaw, hoisin and sesame mayo. Verdict - the pulled pork was pretty flavourful and tender but I didn't get any spicyness in the meat. The sesame mayo definitely gave it a flavourful punch and obviously, you wouldn't find that in a traditional banh mi. I didn't like the cucumbers though - flavourless and they were cut weirdly for a banh mi. Good but I'll stick to Chinatown. I like the concept (especially the name connection with Three Boars) but the sandwiches aren't the biggest. It was enough to tide me over but if this had been solely my lunch, I would still have been hungry afterwards. Hashtag hangry even (just kidding). Tip - apparently they have a loyalty card so if you go lots, enquire about that!

I went here for the first time yesterday with my boyfriend for brunch and I was really impressed. There was a bit of a lineup when we arrived, but it moved quickly. The menu was a bit limited with just 5 different sandwiches to choose from, but they all sounded amazing! I appreciate places that have a small menu and do those meals well. I've heard the menu changes, which keeps you wanting to go back! I had the Guac & Roll (vegan) and my boyfriend had the Chief Beef. My sandwich was one of the best ones I've had in a long time! So much flavor. I tried a bite of the Chief Beef - it was good too, but I didn't think it was as good as mine. We also shared a pour over coffee (Kuma from Guatemala). I typically don't drink my coffee black, but it was so good on its own it didn't need anything else. I'm not a big doughnut fan, but we decided to share one with a cream-cheese icing with pumpkin crumble topping... I think my boyfriend got two bites in before I ate the entire thing! The decor of the space was simple, but trendy. Seating was pretty limited; at least when we went. One of us had to stand for awhile until another spot opened up. Its certainly meant as more of a to-go style.

Wow! Our first visit to Farrow Sandwiches and the hype is real thinking about the sandwiches got me drooling. I love the atmosphere and the hipster vibes. I got to try the two staple sandwiches that they offer and I see why it is permanently on the menu. They were unreal! The sauce and meat combination was made to perfection. Grick Middle - Four Whistle Farms Fried Egg, Bacon, Smoked Cheddah, Rosemary Aioli. Greenz Melt in your mouth goodness! The egg was cooked perfectly for this sandwich, as it was not runny and not over cooked. I loved the aioli , it was so flavorful. Chief Beef - Roast Beef, Horseradish Aioli, Pickled Red Onions, Rip-L Chips, Greenz Chips in a sandwich! Say whaaaa?? It brings me back to when I was younger and chips are my weakness! As for the donuts, they were like a mini cake lol it satisfied my sweet tooth without feeling guilty that I ate a whole cake my favorite were the cronuts. Croissant in a donut form. I am not sure if these flavors change from time to time but it's worth grabbing one.

Noelle's Trick and a cold brew. DELICIOUS!

It's always such a pleasure going to Farrow. The sandwiches are delicious and the rotating menu makes it ever exciting and fresh. Their coffee and baked goods selection is out of this world, and adds to the quality of the meal. The place is almost "too hip" if you know what I mean, which makes it a little unwelcoming at times.

Gotta say I probably never would have stopped here if Farrow didn't show up in Avenue as one of the top 3 "Best To Go". Farrow is pretty small and there isn't really any sitting space - probably a top reason it is a "best to go" place. Farrow sports 4 sandwiches, coffee and some other sides (I.e. Soda, snacks). I got the chicken pot pie and grick middle. The chicken pot pie sandwich was made like a grilled cheese with pie pastry and filling in the middle. Overall, an interesting twist on chicken pot pie and it was pretty tasty. The grick middle is a breakfast sandwich. I didn't like this sandwich as much. The egg is done over easy so the broken yolk made it messy to eat. Also I'm not sure if it was the jam, aioli or the bacon but it tasted like bbq sauce, which was kind of over powering and not something I would imagine wanting in the morning. I'd say Farrow is definitely at least worth a try.

A vegan sandwhich who's patty was made from cauliflower and chickpeas.

Well... what does one say after paying $8 for a vegan sandwhich the size of one's palm whose patty was made from cauliflower and chick peas. That's clever? You could do that? I'll go with "that's good, really good!" I also had a bite of the breakfast sandwhich ($7.25) which had this wonderful sauce. The funny thing is I can't remember the names of any of these burgers! This tiny joint next door to Three Boars really packs a punch. However, there are maybe three or four seats inside and a picnic table outside. So when you visit, just know that likely you will be taking yours to go. I like small businesses that specialize. My rating is 3.5 stars. Round up for being a small business underdog and being a pretty cool place. Now if I only can remember the names of the sandwiches....

Shared to Instagram last year. Vegan. I think it was called "Remember that time I polenta $5" ('cause polenta patty, duh).

I used to be a regular and have filled up several of their loyalty punch cards, I think I've pulled back quite a bit and probably only find myself here about once a month. I guess I feel the price is slightly high compared to other sandwich options out there, and that adds up pretty quick if I'm grabbing them several times a week. I love how creative they get with their sandwich filling combinations, the vegan sandwich always tempts me with it's wacky creative name and the fact that I know it won't be around long. There have been many that I regretted missing after spotting the photo on Instagram or Facebook (and yes, I receive notifications via facebook of their posts 'cause I need to know what their current offerings are). The Grick Middle (sans bacon for me, pls, thx.) is my go-to though. Fried egg, over easy, tomato jam, rosemary aioli, arugula... mmmmmm.... Watchout!! this can get a little messy!! So satisfying, so consistently perfect, it's their main staple I think, you can't go wrong. They once made the very best sandwich I've ever had in my life. The Jolly Molly. It was similar to The Grick Middle, but instead of bread, it was all sandwiched together between a couple of buttermilk pancakes. I still dream about this thing. I believe it was actually only available for that one day and it was quite possibly never ever brought back again. I do know that it sold out early. Sometimes that happens here, so go early.... I've been burned a few times, showing up just a wee bit late.

We got a couple of things: an Almond Croissant, Bulgogi Poutine, a Lavender London Fog with oat milk, and a Peppermint Mocha with oat milk. My Almond Croissant was okay. I know almond croissants are made with leftover pastries, but there was no texture at all. It just fell flat, and lookswise it was physically flat as well lol. It was alright. I wouldn't get the almond croissant again. The Bulgogi Poutine was pretty good. The fries were delicious and crispy. The sauce on top of the fries was slightly sweet, salty, and savory. For me, the bulgogi could've been more flavorful and it didn't taste fresh but I liked the overall dish. Lastly, the Peppermint Mocha was alright. It wasn't spectacular. And I felt the same way about my Lavender London Fog with oat milk. I wish there was more depth in my drink. I think the tea could've been steeped a little longer. Flavor was there in my drink, but it wasn't strong enough. It was slightly disappointing since I've had amazing London Fogs before, and this one just wasn't up to par. Also my drink was slightly warm, not too far off from lukewarm. I feel like the price doesn't exactly correlate with quality for most things here. If we come back here, I'd be willing to try different things and pastries. But I don't think my rating would change much.
