A perfect lunch that hit the mark for our whole group! The staff immediately were friendly and helpful, even though the place was super packed on Sunday around 1130am. Helped seat us right away, got a high chair for our little one and directed us to the self serve water and coffee station. Which my kid loves being a server and getting everyone at the table waters (and making sure they were always full). The food was all amazingly presented and came out in good time considering how busy it was. We all loved the food and the plates were licked clean! The Breakfast Bowl was probably the best one- super filling and loved the variety. Having the whole thing baked just tastes like happy belly food. We also ordered the Crepe with Whipped cream - in the menu it says the bananas come with chocolate sauce but they were so nice when our kids asked for strawberries and chocolate sauce right away they said no problem and did it for us. I love the no hassle feeling with a small change. We also ordered a side of bangers and they were tasty but a little peppery for the kids (who are just fussy about their sausage but everyone else enjoyed them). The Gravlax Benedict was also ordered and super well enjoyed with the substitution for Latkes, highly recommended! I had a huge craving for latkes last Sunday and we got out of church early so, I thought we might have beaten the after church rush from the Moravian church nearby. We easily found parking nearby and voila, a table inside. I thought I had ordered the latkes with an egg on top- I was really hungry but was disappointed that the waiter had misconstrued my order and put a side potato latke together with a side egg over easy. . It was nobody's fault really, and quite cheap, but when I got home, I put an egg and two potatoes in the electric vegetable chopper with some salt and pepper and whipped up my own potato pancakes. It tasted just as good and finally satiated my craving. Oh well. Lesson learned. read more

Absolutely love this place. There's just a real nice feel great seating and services. Excellent love the big windows and ability to plug-in for working on your computer. Great little perks of cucumber water and marshmallows for hot chocolate. Only downside it is pretty pricey for drinks and food. However, the food looks amazing. Definitely a place. The coffees/lattes are really great, but the food leaves a bit to be desired. The place was busy, but not full on a Sunday at noon. We ordered: traditional eggs Benny, Breakfast burrito, Huevos Rancheros and scrambled eggs and back bacon. All 4 of us were just ok with the dishes. The back bacon was a grey slab. TL;DR: a great setting for a hot beverage or two coupled with conversation. I really enjoyed the design of the place as a whole and liked the service which was provided. My time here was quick; my friends and I stopped by to order a few caffeinated delights before settling into the music venue located in the basement. It was quite loud but not obnoxiously so. You can still have a good conversation. The seating options were great and I really liked the decor; it was industrial yet modern and I adored the lighting and the huge windows which surrounded the interior. In addition, the panel graphic behind the front counter was particularly beautiful. I really wished we had sat in the booth seats but they were all filled! The service was friendly and really made you feel comfortable. They definitely went above and beyond in terms of making their guests feel right at home. I really wish that I tried their food because from what I've read it is pretty good! But sadly, I only ordered beverages. I used to live accross the bridge from this Cafe, and have visited it quiet frequently for a java to take on a walk in the Millcreek Ravine, as it is right next to the trail head; this place makes a fantastic dirty chai! That being said, I have had a meal here a few times, and have always enjoyed. They have a fair amount of choices available for people that need gluten free, or lactose free options, and the food is always so full of flavor. From my experiences, the staff is always happy to serve, and willing to modify orders if requested. The restaurant dining area and washrooms are clean; and they tend to showcase local artists' paintings/art on a feature wall to the left of the entrance as you walk in. The service is fairly fast to take care of you; but if you want water or plain coffee, you may have tonpour it yourself, as they leave that on a stand next to the entrance. I consider Millcreek as great place to go to for a brunch or dinner, and or just a simple Java of your choice. They have never disappointed me, but they have impressed me a few times. read more

I didn't know that this cafe is exist! Coming here after seeing their Instagram from my another foodie buddy who sent me this place's picture of i special menu for the weekend "Nasi Lemak". A popular breakfast rice in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Nasi lemak is basically a coconut rice with many side dishes but anchovies (ikan bilis) and sambal are must! The cafe was serving nasi lemak with sunny side up eggs, crispy anchovies (ikan bilis), pork belly (that was hidden under the eggs), cucumber, pineapple, sambal and kerupuk (crackers). Serving on banana leaves that makes it different! I laughed with my partner's comment, "this is the first non Asian restaurant that I visited which serves kerupuk in Canada" I realized and agreed with his statement. It's a family ownership restaurant who came from Singapore. Very nice lady and son! The lady came and asked me how the food was. I said I finished it all. I know the Sambal has been Canadianized a bit by not too much heat on the Sambal but it's still flavourful Sambal. The ambience is cozy and industrial roof setting which I enjoy. We finished our meal with coffee. He chose mochaccino and I had the Spanish coffee. A bit booze on the weekend won't harm you read more

I was very excited to dig in to the beautiful plate of eggs benedict florentine that was served to me! Quickly disappointed at the bland flavour of the hollandaise and cool-to-the-touch hash browns. I think the chef prepared the plate and everything got cold while he prepared the eggs. Eggs, however, were poached perfectly, hollandaise had perfect texture, but no zest, no seasoning. A disappointing experience overall. Nice looking food with quality ingredients, but unbelievably bland. How could anything that looks so good taste so boring? I don't think I could make food this dull if I tried. I had a breakfast sandwich, made with a lovely looking but very dry bread. No sauce of any description save a bit of butter or margarine on the bottom made for a very crunchy, dry, chewy sandwich. My boyfriend had the Mexican omelette which, amazingly, was also very boring and bland in flavour, and for $13!! How anything called Mexican have almost no spice or flavour is beyond me. I should have twigged that something was up when I noticed the menu mentioned in bold that chorizo is MEAT. Wow, I pity them if their regular clientele doesn't know this. Quaint set up but disorganized, with a young and inexperienced (albeit polite) staff. For example, no one told us to help ourselves to coffee after we paid for it. No one tells you to seat yourself or where to get menus. I guess they must rely on regulars for their business, because I can't think of anything to recommend about this place. We won't be back. Have been here a few times and do not have any complaints. The food is really good, homemade soups and sandwiches and fresh salads, paired with inviting decor and friendly staff, the perfect place to share lunch with a friend. Haven't been here during peak hours, but have never had trouble with parking or getting a table for two. The prices were fair for the quality of the food and for the experience. I like coming here because it's not usually as busy as other places on a weekend morning (though there are days that I've had to wait for tables). You're never rushed here though, even though they could have a line out the door, you won't feel like you have to hurry and get out of there. The staff are super friendly and I don't think I've seen anyone in a bad mood even though they're packed (or alternatively, super bored). The food is pretty decent as are the prices. I like coming for the cinnamon bun which looks simple (no icing or anything) and flecked with some sort of seed - you feel like it's a healthier alternative. Then you break into it and it's fluffy and soft and crying out to be doused in butter (you should definitely douse it in butter) and it tastes perfect. This bun, a pot of tea and I am in heaven. Went for a breakfast date with the hubby on a weekday and was pretty surprised about how busy this place is! We did get seated right away though. I like the Art Deco type vibe and we were able to find a spot street parking nearby. Water is self serve and I believe the coffee is as well, but that gets added to the bill. I ordered a hot chocolate and was not disappointed. I'm honestly not big on breakfast like the hubby is, but there is a good assortment of choices. I strayed from my usual eggs benny and gave their corned beef hash a go, and hubby wanted gravlax, so ended up with a gravlax omelette. Definitely a different kind of breakfast than what I usually get, but the portion was good for me, in fact I couldn't finish, so I let my hubby eat the rest. I was very excited to go to Mill Creek Cafe, and maybe it was an off day, but it was a really disappointing experience. We were sat quickly, but it took 30 minutes to get someone to take our order, in a place without a line and some tables free, and after asking to order and being told they would be back. If you want decent but overpriced food and to be ignored and treated like crap this is the place for you. I don't like giving bad reviews, and have a pretty high pain threshold for the service industry, especially in these times. My wife and I have been here more than 5 times and we do like the food (probably a 3.5 out of 5) and its central location for friends, but the staff are often quite short with people and the last time we went will be the last time we ever go. It makes a lot more sense why some of the staff are rude when the manager is the one who treats customers terribly. In our case where there was miscommunication between the 2 waiters that we ended up having, there was no apology, but rather we were treated with disdain, not heard and we are the last people that would want to enter into an argument, so we cut our losses and will not be back. read more

Mill Creek Cafe is one of those little mom and pop joints I have passed a scadzillion times but never had the opportunity to visit. Until today. Located just before the Mill Creek Ravine Bridge, Mill Creek Cafe has a cozy atmosphere and a decent number of tables packed into a relatively small space. You place your order at the counter, pay for it right away, then seat yourself. Your food and/or drinks arrive shortly thereafter. The menu consists of breakfast items (served until 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. on weekends), sandwiches, soups, and light entrees. I just stopped by for coffee, and was impressed by the variety of hot beverages available. I decided on a chai latte. Prices were on par with other coffee shops, and the drink was served in a tall glass. I noticed a number of customers getting sandwiches or treats with their drinks. I was tempted by the delicious assortment of squares and cookies, but decided to save that for another time. The staff are courteous and the place is clean. One of my favourite Edmonton restaurants is nearly finished a redesign, adding a little roominess and light. Thankfully, the menu and quality continue to be terrific. They persist with a few odd quirks They seem to expect as they always have, without signage, for you to order at the counter. The Mill Creek Café has been around for a long time but they continually renovate and reinvent themselves. I hardly recognized the inside as some walls must have been moved or removed. We didn't make it here in time for breakfast so we ordered lunch. Actually we didn't even glance at the menu as the special sounded so good that both my guest and I ordered it. The special was a BLT sandwich on 9 grain bread with soup. The BLT is not at all like you might get a franchise chain. It was a combination of a grilled cheese sandwich and a BLT. It was delicious and the cheese seemed to hold it all together nicely. The BLT was substantial. The soup was a corn chowder with cheese. Actually I didn't notice the cheese in the soup and mine could have been warmer. My guest had tomato bisque and she said it was hot and spicy. I should have ordered that soup although mine was tasty too, just not hot . Coffee is self serve and there is a choice of light dark and very dark. I chose very dark and found it much to my liking. I thought refills must be free because being self serve, I served myself a refill. However upon paying the bill they said that refills are a dollar fifty. This was quite steep for drip coffee in a karaf that was self serve. The cups themselves were not large so this became a little irritant that could keep us from coming back. Service was cordial and prompt but no more. Overall the Mill Creek Café serves delicious food but it's more expensive than it should be, my soup was warm, and the extra cost self serve coffee refills were a put off. The next time I'm in the area I'll go to Tasty Tom's where the food is at least as good, your coffee cup is always full and I felt more welcomed. After years of driving by this little corner cafe, I finally stopped in for lunch on the other day and was pleasantly surprised! The space inside is a lot bigger than it looks from the outside, and there's plenty of seating. Staff is very attentive, greeting you from the moment you step in and explaining the system of the cafe. Water and coffee is self serve at the front of the cafe, and there are also an assortment of drinks inside of a fridge near the front. Food arrived incredibly fast. Within 5 minutes of ordering, our food was out and on our table. Both my eating accomplice and I ordered the turkey sandwich, one with a soup side, one with a Caesar salad. Quality-wise, the sandwiches were alright. Ingredients were fresh and the bread (made in house!) was very good. It was nothing mind blowing though. The full sandwich was quite filling and more than enough to serve as both breakfast and lunch. I'm a bit of a decor snob when it comes to cafes and the Mill Creek Cafe's decor is... hodgepodge and not in the fun, eclectic kind of way, but in the "what is going on here?" kind of way. I don't know if I would call this the worst breakfast I've ever had, but I can't think of a worse one. Three questions arose from my meal - the larger breakfast: 1) Is bacon supposed to be a sickly gray in color? 2) Does this meal come with tomato? There was one sliver of tomato the size of a half a quarter. Is tomato included but this hilariously tiny section was all they had, or was it dropped onto my plate by accident (and if so, where did it come from!?!)? 3) Why was just the top crust of the toast cut off? Was there something wrong with the top of the bread and it was served anyway? As for the service, the young lady was nice enough, but the young man was pretty surly and seemed to be in a bad mood - he didn't so much communicate as he just grunted with a scowl on his face. read more

I've had the pleasure of visiting Mill Creek Cafe a number of times over the last few years. It's a little off the beaten path for me, so I don't get there all that frequently. Each time I've been there, however, I have enjoyed myself. The Cafe is more of a local gathering place, where friends tend to meet to share a breakfast, brunch or lunch. I've found myself most frequently there for breakfast although I've been for lunch at least once. My favourite part of this restaurant is their baking. If you're looking for a cinnamon bun that will fill you to the cork, try Mill Creek Cafe. The cinnamon buns, baked daily, will fill a small dinner plate. They are a nice mix of dough, sugar and cinnamon. They are also served with a small container of cream cheese icing. A nice touch. I've sampled a handful of other kinds of baking, including some tasty cookies (nice big ones that almost need two hands to hold) and squares. The breakfasts served here (besides the cinnamon buns) are really tasty. I have a fond memory of a chorizo omelette, which left me wanting more. They also bake their own break on-site and it's some of the best around - always nice and fresh. Speaking of bread, their sandwiches are great. I'm particularly fond of the turkey, brie and pear sandwich. A really nice mix, with tonnes of flavour! The staff have always been really friendly and courteous. The restaurant is clean and inviting. I do also believe that they offer catering. So, if you enjoy small, local cafes with tantalizing baking and wonderful breakfast and lunch menus, consider hitting up Mill Creek Cafe next time you're headed down Whyte Avenue. read more

Sarah and I are still hunting for our go-to brunch spot here in Edmonton. The New York Bagel Cafe would be it if it didn't cost $20 per plate. So this morning - a Saturday, we gave the Mill Creek Cafe a try after we picked up some food for the week from the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market (boy, does this sound as if it came from that "Stuff White People Like" blog that was popular a few years ago). And probably because it was a Saturday, the cafe was completely packed. And as this isn't a traditional sit-down place with a host or full waiter service, the lack of seating made for a somewhat awkward experience. The room itself was somewhat cramped. And I found that a good amount of the silverware, and some of the glasses were not washed well. I pulled a plastic cup out of a stack which had a lipstick stain on it. The arrangement of the cafe is also awkward. If you order a pot of tea a server will bring you hot water and a teacup.. And if you want to put sugar and milk in your tea, you need to wield your way through a maze of people and tables to get to a stand with the sugar and milk. And while you order at the counter, the Mill Creek Cafe serves a full breakfast. I ordered the Corned Beef Hash, which featured larger chunks of Corned Beef and Potatoes than I'm used to. The hash was good, but not anything special. And Sarah ordered the Eggs Florentine, and the Hollandaise sauce tasted as if it came from a package. But the potatoes were reportedly tasty and serving sizes were well portioned - large enough to satiate your appetite, but not so large that you need to take home leftovers. On the positive side, the cafe bakes (and sells) its own bread multi-grain bread, which is fantastic. I'd also like to try a number of its other baked goods at some point. The Mill Creek Cafe may be more appealing at a less hectic time than the peak Brunch hour on a Saturday.
