Quite a large menu to pick through. Didn't see much of a Viet spin to the traditional breakfast despite being an award-winning Vietnamese restaurant. Portion size decent overall but also not cheap. This restaurant located in the busy street of Whyte av is the epitome of local family restaurant. The restaurant offers lots of options from Pho to brunch food. The restaurant is decorated like a diner. The service is kind and prompt. I ordered the vegan tofu sandwich. The food was delicious and the coffee was great. Overall great place to have brunch. A full diner menu, a full vegan menu and a full Vietnamese menu...it's a great place to go when you don't know what you want, because they have everything. My favourite spot on whyte! Really good food and service. I remember going years ago (before Covid) and I remember it being a bit better. Still really good! This is a great place with lots of options including for our vegetarian and vegan friends! Located down Whyte Ave, it's tucked away at the edge by Boston Pizza and Cafe Mosaics. We ordered the chicken salad rolls, bun bo hue (BBH), and the chicken vermicelli bowl. They have a large menu with a bunch of options and can cater to everyone's dietary needs. The chicken salad rolls were fresh, albeit a bit bland as I don't think the chicken was seasoned. However, the peanut sauce saved the day with its smooth consistency and bomb flavour. The BBH here was definitely one of the better ones I've found in Edmonton. The broth had the perfect amount of spiciness to it, was flavourful, and light. The beef was not overcooked at all and was very tender. The chicken vermicelli bowl was pretty typical, however. I really enjoyed the grilled chicken and the housemade fish sauce went perfectly with it. It's a good vermicelli bowl, no complaints here. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to someone looking for some Vietnamese fare when they're down Whyte. They're very accommodating, no matter what dietary restrictions you have. I also spied on their breakfast menu and saw that they offered 10 different kinds of Eggs Benedict?? I might pop in again soon to give it a try! read more

Friends & Neighbours has been a fixture on Whyte Avenue for many years and I've been happily chowing down on their egg's benedict since I first moved to Edmonton 10 years ago. My favourite version is the Melbourne Benny which is topped with tomatoes, steamed spinach and avocado along with the eggs and hollandaise sauce that accompanies all of their bennys. They also have a vegan version available on the weekends which uses a vegan egg substitute and soy bacon. Yum! I've been missing them a lot over the past year. A greasy breakfast really isn't the same when you order it to-go. That's all psychological though. The food is just as good as it has always been, I just miss eating it from their diner-style seating and can't wait for my first time back. read more

This place has improved so much over the last few years, that it has become one of my favourite spots on Whyte Avenue! They now have three - that's right, three - menus. One is their regular menu, one is Vietnamese with pho and other dishes, and the other collects all of their vegetarian options to make it easier for vegetarians to pick and choose. However, there is so much choice, that it is hard to choose! The vegetarian pho has become a favourite, because they use so many vegetables including kale and brussels sprouts, which I usually hate, but not in this soup. I like a number of the brunch dishes, and I had a fish dinner and a steak dinner that were excellent. Prices are reasonable - the most expensive items are maybe $17 or so - and service is excellent. Plus, the owners are amazing people. I can't wait to go back! read more

Small little cafe. It has more of a diner feel and you can tell has been around for a while. They have a decent breakfast menu with a variety of options. If you come before 10:30 then you can order the breakfast special which includes eggs, toast, choice of sausage, bacon, or ham and hash browns for $6. Prices are fairly reasonable and food is good. I ended up ordered a breakfast pita which came with everything but eggs oddly enough which is typically a main breakfast staple. It was ok but I was expecting eggs so it didn't cut it for me and I won't order it again. The pita was huge and came with spinach, carrots, bacon, avocado, feta, and some kind of tomato paste. Our server was really sweet and the food came out in good time. I'd like to come again and try something else. read more

Friends & Neighbors Cafe is totally unpretentious, which I love. There's a big fish aquarium at the very back of the cafe, and the booths remind me of the leather seats in a 50s-style Cadillac. The menu has all kinds of dishes, like Asian, Italian, American, and even Edmontonian--I had the Whyte Ave melt! What was most memorable was when the owner came out and started to play the accordion. It was someone's birthday, so he went over to their table and played a whole bunch of songs. He was good at it and everything, but he wouldn't stop. He just kept playing and playing, and it got a bit annoying, because it was hard to have a conversation with such loud music. This is a great place! I was looking for a good vegan place to bring a friend (on a day Cafe Mosaic was closed next door- also a great option!) and remembered that this place has a full vegetarian menu! It was great. There were four of us (only one was actually vegan) and we all ordered off the vegan breakfast menu to try it out. Definitely a great find! They also make their own 'vegan eggs' here which were delicious! And the server was nice, very attentive and quite funny. We all left happy! Little bit run down inside, but definitely has that 'cozy well traveled diner' feel. I've eaten here before for lunch, and it was awhile ago, but I remember liking it then too! read more

Went here for the first time with my family yesterday. Upon entering we were given a warm welcome. I had heard good things about this restaurant in regard to vegan options, so I was surprised at how many options there were to choose from. I eventually went with the Extreme Pita w/ a side of hashbrowns. The Pita was delicious however fairly dry, and I was given a small container of salsa but a dressing inside of the sandwich would have been nice. The service was good, it could have been quicker since we waited about 25 minutes for our food. I will go back here to try something new. read more

I am not Vietnamese, but I know my Pho. They didn't bring what I order, when I asked, the server said " we were out of ..FLANK, TENDON, TRIPE AND FATTY FLANK.". They didn't bother to come and ask, they just decided I could eat anything else and don't noticed?! That was really disappointing. Yummy noms and friendly faces! This has been a steady go-to for us for over a decade. It's a basic hole in the wall with small town friendly service and a gigantic menu. But seriously the menu needs to be a quarter the current size... it'll take you 15 minutes to figure out what you want from their 3 or 4 different menus with a hundred items in each but they run a good kitchen and our favourites are always consistent. BUDDHA PHO...PHOEVA! Friends & Neighbors is one of my favourite chill digs in Edmonton. I come here alone, with friends for any meal, it's the place to be. The decor is quirkily and Twin Peaksy, which I was immediately drawn to on my first visit. The menu is greasy spoon mixed with Vietnamese radness. I can go eat a tofu scramble with five-spice tasting tofu bacon, or slurp a giant bowl of soup. The service is jussssst awkward enough to whisper about across the table and have something to talk about, just cordial enough that you'll always be back. Last time, my bowl of pho was extra rad because there were bits of kale and brussel sprouts in it, something not to be found at other joints. Those are my two favourite green things. FIST PUMP. I have never been disappointed with a Friends & Neighbours experience, and now I totally step into other diners just wishing they were as rad as F&N. I'll be back forever. read more

Good place for breakfast, and their Pho menu from the attached restaurant next door had some amazing looking dishes. When we were seated, we had three large menus dropped in front of us. I had images in my mind of Chef Ramsay on Kitchen Nightmares scrutinizing them. Despite the fact that there were more choices than I could even be bothered to look at, the food we ordered was very fresh tasting. I found my club sandwich to be a little on the dry side, but my wifes burger was delicious. A lot of the food coming out of the kitchen to other tables looked fantastic as well, especially the dishes from their pho menu. The service was good, and our coffees and waters were never left empty, but sadly our appetizer was forgotten about and didn't come to the table until after we were done our entrees. It has been several years since the last time I had been in F&N, and since that time, they have done some minor renovatiaons. It seemed a lot cleaner and more vibrant than I remember. I would like to say that this place deserves 4 or even 4.5 stars, but I was certainly put off by the size of their many menus. Having our appetizers come out after the fact was a disapointment. The prices seemed a little high for some of the dishes, but not unreasonably. I would gladly go back, although it might not be my first choice. read more

The service was great here and the selection was amazing. I was surprised to see all the different sections of the menu. This was my second meal in Canada and it was quite pleasant. I wanted to try the Pad Thai to compare it to the style in LA. It was totally different! I did still enjoy it but it threw me off since I was expecting a different flavor. The Pad Thai was salty and spicy as opposed to the spicy sweet I'm use to. My company ordered a veggie sandwich with crispy marinated tofu. I really like the tofu! Second time around, had the buttermilk pancakes with 2 eggs sunny side up style! The pancakes were ok, crunchy on the outside (in a good way) and airy on the inside, it crumbled every time I sliced into it, not used to that, didn't like it. The eggs were fresh though. The bathroom was really clean. Giving this second time around a three star rating because of the inconsistent quality of food. Over the course of our four years living near Whyte Ave, my wife and I have probably spent more of our income here than any other eatery in the area. Is it the food the best we've come across? No. Is the service unparalleled? Not necessarily. Is it the cheapest breakfast/meal you can get? Not quite. It's the little things that make Friends and Neighbours worth visiting on multiple occasions. If the kitschy, campy decor, the lime green vinyl booths, the never-ending and consistently good coffee, the local, family-owned feel, and the delicious asparagus and Swiss cheese omelette aren't a draw for you, then you may want to look elsewhere for your Saturday morning fare. The price is very reasonable, the food (particularly the breakfast menu) is definitely above-par, and the wait staff are kind, courteous and always nearby with a refill. read more

I'm pretty sure I've written a review for F&N's before. I think this is a duplicate entry, but it's worth singing the praises of this place once again. For me, F&N's is my neighbourhood diner, and quite a good one. Count on it for a solid weekend breakfast/brunch when you can pull on some sweats and curl up in a booth with strong coffee. Otherwise it serves all the diner comfort foods, sandwiches and "blue plates". Curiously enough there is a strong selection of Asian items, often on the specials board. It's often "beef cube in sauce", which hints at needing a better marketing approach, but many have told me it's quite good. I tend to stick to the two eggs any style with bacon, hash and toast (sometimes with a breakfast sausage side). read more

They don't have dive diners in E-town like they do in Toronto or Montreal. This is as close to a greasy spoon as I can find here, aside from Route 99. Friends & Neighbours serves up a cheap, fast eggs, bacon and toast with bottomless cups of coffee, so you can slowly but surely embrace the day after a night of excess. They have small, plastic booths here, like a '70s-style diner. And there's a fish tank in the back that is a bit pitiful to look at, and even more unappetizing while you're eating. The servers are very attentive, but they don't make you feel rushed. In fact, this is the kinda place that's great for extended conversations on a lazy Sunday afternoon, if it's too cold out on Whyte to stroll or to hit a patio. We visited Friends & Neighbours after waiting inside of another restaurant for about twenty minutes without service. As I had a hankering for breakfast food, F&N was nearby and carried a good Yelp star rating. Upon arrival, we were immediately helped to seating by a friendly staff member who would be our waiter as well. He immediately queried us about drinks which led to us getting our coffee by the time we sat down (score!). It certainly helped to wash away a devilish mixture of morning grumps and dissatisfaction from the previously restaurant. Soon, we were greeted to a delicious menu full of both comfort foods and slightly fancier delights- all priced reasonably! I opted for the Salmon & Eggs which came with a serving of fruit and toast of my choice. The food arrived within ten minutes and was delicious, hot, and fresh. The salmon had dollops of cream cheese next to a scoop of near-perfect scrambled eggs (a tad too greasy for my liking). The location is certainly no gourmet restaurant but has a character that you can come to expect from local Whyte Avenue restaurants. I think the only real complaint I can scrape up right now is that the washrooms were very, very small but again, something to be expected in that area of town so hardly a big issue.
