We got takeout and everything went smoothly. I called at 11:30 for a 12:30 scheduled pickup. We ordered hush puppies, which stayed crispy on the way home which was awesome. They were tasty. The fries were soggy and seemed to have the same seasoning as the crabs. I wish they would have been crispier and maybe just salt and pepper to give your palette a break. They move tables quickly, so a comfortable wait. The group reports excellent and bountiful crab cakes, very good blue crab "chowda", and their baskets of fried seafood. Service was attentive, the restaurant clean and thematic for a seafood place. Returned the next day with others for lunch. Once again the crab cakes were the hit. The seafood Mac and cheese did not appeal to our M&C fan due to chives mixed throughout, and shredded, rather than chunk, seafood on top. The netted and raked shrimp and clam strip platter had very good a juicy shrimp, but clam strips that were overfried and more coating than clam: a disappointment. Fries were very good; the collard greens disappointed our NC native guest, and were quite spicy. House--made cocktail sauce was tasty; the house-made tartar sauce not so much. I had a great experience! I went there while on vacay. We were treated like they had known us for years. We ordered many different things from the crab legs, crab cakes, and burgers. everything was delicious. Not only did we get food while there, but we told the rest of our family of 12 and they got food as well and that food was great too. I would love to know the brand of the hushpuppies they were to die for. Y'all definitely have a life-long customer in me. The shop is local to OBX Corolla, it was about a 10 minute drive from our house rental. If you're lucky, sometimes you can find a coupon online for Fat Crabs. Our first day in OBX, we were too lazy to cook so decided to head out for a quick lunch. ****SKIP TO END FOR SPECIAL TIPS**** (Food: 3 out of 5) --Brisket Cheesesteak: 2.5 out of 5 - My fiancé and his brother both ordered their Brisket Cheesesteak, neither of them had the greatest review for this sandwich. The menu reads "served on fresh baked lightly toasted bun" - wonder when the bun was baked.. or toasted. --Fish of the day Sandwich: My brother in law's girlfriend ordered this, I don't remember what the fish of the day was but.. I remember her review being something sort of like "...it's okay" --Soft Shell Crab Special Platter 2.5 out of 5 - I love love love Soft Shell Crab, and I always love going down to Dickies.. Dicks Crabs? (something like that). Unfortunately, it was too far from where we were staying at so I settled to have it here. I was looking forward to eating their soft shell crab as I wait almost all year round to have this fresh fried during the Summer in OBX. Oh it was a let down, the crab was super soggy and oily. It felt like they had been sitting under the heat lamp for awhile, before someone even remembered or realized it was sitting there, waiting to be sent to a table. It was bland with no seasoning, just.. fried and that was that. --Tartar Sauce: we all tried the tartar sauce, why was it just sitting on the table at room temp? I dipped mine with butter and it honestly was one of the best hush puppies, I have ever tried. --DOZEN BLUE CRAB STEAMED POT (4/5) It was exactly just that, a tray of steamed blue crabs. The crabs weren't light but also not heavy, it had average weight. I'm only giving this a 4 out of 5 because they COVERED it with a vinegar old bay mix and it was EVERYWHERE. They added way too much of it and made some bits extremely salty. I didn't realize it wasn't going to be plain, I would have definitely asked for it to be put on the side instead. --Veggie Set : 1 out of 5 - I ordered this additionally to the blue crabs and it came with corn, potato and sliced onions. The corn that was used was a mushy corn, and had no bite to it. The potato was okay, and the onion was just sliced; it was all seasoned with their vinegar old bay and was overall salty. Not sure why this set costs $6... (Service: 2 out of 5) When we arrived to the store, there was a group checking out- this group wanted to do split checks for each of them.. there was a girl helping them check out and 2 other workers. One guy was prepping the corn and the other guy, who I believe is the manager just kept walking back and forth, he looked at us, smiled and just continued on his day. They had us stand there the entire time while this group was checking out; finally on the last person, the 'manager' said "Hey, how can I help you?" - We said we wanted to dine in for 4, and he said "oh, she'll finish with them and be right with you." ...oh.. okay sure... Once we were finally seated, it took about 10 minutes for anyone to come and greet us, the drink order came out after awhile and the food took a long time as well. After 20 or so minutes of sitting there (after ordering), another server comes over and asks "what can I get for you guys?" ..um well we had already ordered but imagine if we didn't and it took 20 minutes for us to get some service.. I decided to eat here while on vacation with my family in the Outer Banks. I ordered the Southern Sampler that came with Cornbread and choice of two sides-- I chose the Hushpuppies and Mac n Cheese. I also tried an order of the Fish Tacos. The Southern Sampler comes with Smoked Beef Brisket, Pork BBQ, and Chicken BBQ. The Smoked Beef Brisket was really good. It was cooked well, soft, and flavorful. However, the Chicken BBQ tasted a little dry and overcooked. The chicken and pork were good but not great-- definitely not the best barbecue I've ever had. The side of Hushpuppies was good. The Hushpuppies were fresh, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside. The Mac n Cheese was standard. It wasn't overcooked which was good, but it also was definitely not the best Mac n Cheese I've ever had. The Fish Taco was not that great. The Catch of the Day that they used in the taco tonight was Mahi Mahi. The fish was over-fried and too crispy. The tortilla was too big for the fish. And the taco lacked an acidic component, such as the typical cilantro-lime sauce, to balance out the flavors of the fish. Overall, the stars of my dinner were the Smoked Beef Brisket and the Hushpuppies. Everything else was mediocre and overpriced considering the cooking, the portion sizes, and that they served alcohol in plastic cups and average tasting seafood/ barbecue platters on paper plates for upwards of 20 dollars. read more

If i could give 0 I would, Been communicating with Brian the owner since April about catering a wedding on the 4x4 beach and his communication skills are horrendous! Went back and forth in email asking questions about quantities and such and when i asked him for an option for the kids, talking about mac and cheese sent him over the edge because we spoke about seafood mac and cheese for the adults and i opted out of that because of the cost, simply asked what option there was for kids mac and cheese and he completely ignored the question, so i simply said, please go re read my email and then respond so i can get it all paid for and done. However because i said i was questioning the level of paying attention to anything I was saying to him, that sent him over the edge and he then started accusing me of being difficult. Asking to finalize a wedding order 26 days prior to my wedding was being too difficult. Lesson learned and be very aware of wanting this place to do anything responsible. Absolutely abysmal table and wait management. Told us 30 mins for a table - we checked in at the hour and 90 minute mark, no information. At 105 minutes, we asked again and was told our table was being held up by a group that had paid but won't leave. As we discussed as a family what we should do, they sat a group of 5, lower than us on the waiting list, without explanation. We absolutely understand how hectic this area can be with beach tourists, especially on weekends. But simple communication and orderly wait lists are a must at any establishment. The bad: A good seafood boil should feel like all elements are cooked together. The potatoes, sausage, and seafood should taste cohesive. However the meal tasted like the crab was boiled separate from the shrimp and the sausage was boiled by itself. That is not what one would expect from a good seafood boil.
